Part 47: Electronic Instrument Cluster Conversion - Part 1 - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration

- The viewers have voted! At the end of part 46 I presented a choice as to what you would like to see next and by a wide margin, we have a winner. Episode 47 of my '76 Mazda Cosmo restoration focuses on converting the instrument cluster from 40 year old analog mechanical gauges to electronic gauges. Not some gaudy named-after-a-US-state Digital glowing green digital panel slapped into a classic looking frame of course. Instead, a true integration of the existing gauges with modern electronics and control, taking information from an MS3-Pro fed CAN bus. Suffice it to say, there is a lot of delicate detail here, working with ridiculously tiny screws, machining of small parts and some electronics as well. There will also definitely be a part 2 of this episode, and possibly a part 3, because building an OEM integration level instrument cluster is no small task!

You know, every time Project Binky's parents complain about how long their project has taken, i always think about good ol' Aaron. :) Man, if i could have, like 10% of your dedication to a sole project, i'd prolly finish most of the stuff that's been "floating" around. Hats off to ya for pushing through.
Sad part is, it will be 8 more month's untill we see dashboard part 2 of 5.. lol
True, but you know what? I like it like that. It's like Christmas morning each time he posts, and i understand why it takes so long. At least in my perspective. I have a Merc that's been in the works for almost twenty years now. :))
This has to be the longest car restoration series to date. Which makes it more prominent towards waiting and eager to watch more as time passes by.
Oh, I don't know. I was reading on the Electric Vehicle Discussion List a few weeks ago about a guy now basically in his death bed asking for help to finish the car he started in the 70s! Hopefully I'm a bit quicker than that.
Well alright dude ...
merry Christmas 🎄 / happy new year🎉
see you in 2020 👍
Oh, I think sooner than 2020...
@@aaroncake I take your word for it
He's back! Hope you've been doing great Aaron! take care my friend!
Me and by brother always loved watching your videos, Aaron. Unfortunately my brother is not with us anymore, but I’ll watch for him 😢
Integra DIY 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
May he rest in peace. know you have many brothers out there in the car community and we'll be here to watch with you
One of things I love about this project is the conversion of stuff rather than replacement. I cant stand modern "car" shows who just throw in thousands of pounds worth of gauge clusters and barely mention them.
It has always bothered me when replacement takes place just for replacement sake, or because it is the easiest path. Man I hate seeing a set of aftermarket gauges just shoved into a cluster, normally done because the builder isn't capable of making the originals work, or to take the easiest approach. Not to say of course some stuff doesn't deserve replacement. Carbs with fuel injection, suspensions, etc. But my vision here is a modern '76 Cosmo. The gauges are so quintessential to the feel of the car I had no intention of ruining that.
yeah we got chip fooze here he said rip that sumbitch outta there and make some really tacky looking wood and chrome dash board and fit it with some EPIC fucking ricer gauges with gamer RGB that syncs up to that Avenged Sevenfold song you play with your new shitty SONY XPLOD radio in your classic car
I work overnights. Was plugging in the phone to go to bed and new video. Sleep shall wait!!
I'm sure your employer will understand the excuse tomorrow if you fall asleep at work.
This is Aaron’s passion, he is in no rush . Haven’t looked into these videos since the first few came out around 7-8 years ago . I have recently picked up a jcese cosmo so I’m back looking for motivation....... 😎

Love the channel Aaron.
He proves production value is not equal to video quality. Awesome as always.
Hey A A Ron! Good to see you back man. 🎅🏿👍
It's like christmas now I see a new video has been released, now all I need to do is not do my job and watch this while on nights
I thanks Aaron these videos give me hope on to my dream of building a car one day
welcome back and good luck
That video is great , always good work Aaron
God f'ing damn it Aaron, letting me wait much! I swear to good i was thinking of you a few days ago and wanted to comment on a vid but i forgot. You are by far my favorite person on youtube. My favorite channel, my favorite build! Love it man! Hope you are good and can't wait for more!!! All the best,
Cristian
Crazy how much effort you put into the tiny bits. I would just 3D print the stepper motor brackets, but I guess where's the fun in that. Hope to see another vid soon!
I did consider that however had concerns with dimensional stability in the long run. The interior of a car gets surprisingly hot and even ABS starts to get soft. If the interior ever warms up enough to start to deform aluminium, I have more important concerns in my life than the gauges.
@@aaroncake Plus, when you have a mill every solution starts with a block of metal.
Great content the workshop and bad obsession have talked about you so I've watched and subscribed
I had tears in my eyes when I saw that you had uploaded a video
Welcome back Aaron 😁
Ok the trick for drilling a rod straight is genius

YEAH! FINALLY! im so happy!
Hurrah, good to see you back Aaron :-)
I really enjoyed this episode!
Hope the next one will come sooner than the latest interval ;-)
It will. I'm actually a lot further along than the ending of this video would tease.
About time Aaron!
I knew today was going to be a great day!
Welcome back, mate. :-)
yess an episode!
thanks for the new vid
Amazing. I've converted my early 80s corolla to megasquirt and need to run an elec speedo sender and stepper motor. I had no idea about the oem stepper motors
Just noticed the link to your website with more info. Thanks bud
A good variety of them are available on eBay in many different shapes. The nice part is they are made to fit in nearly any sort of gauge.
I actually want to do the opposite and put an older (datsun 200sx) gauge cluster into my 240sx....
I will likely not go to this level, though. The odometer stepper motor can likely drive an older speedometer head directly and the gauges all have adjustable ranges.
Wooohooo ive been waiting this is going to be good.
at 88mph we're gonna see some shit... best quote of 2019
haces unos trabajos perfectos gracias por compartirlos
Ojhhhhh man! Literally stopped what I was doing too watch this
This guy is a boss. Damn.
Nice! Aaron ia back!
yay everyone's favoutrite Canadian is back!!!!
ohh cool its James May
Damn! It's four in the afternoon in Scotland, I'm saving you until after the footie tonight.....laters.
Please Hury up I been following your vedio since 2012 and I want to see the end of this project you did a very nice work all that years
And a big hi from overseas bro👍
Oh hell yeah just like christmas new aaroncake video!
I love riding this train
Somehow I missed this when it came out, now Ive got 2 episodes to watch!
You need a 3d printer Aaron, could print all those components you milled from the ally 😉
Oh, I have one (see episode 46) however chose aluminium for purposes of longevity and material stability.
He's alive!
holy Molly I was just thinking bout you!!!!
I'm working also on upgrading the gauges with a multypurpose gauge gps and other knacks. gauge nd
And oddly I was just looking at those GPS based multipurpose gauges today as someone was asking me about them, considering one for his boat.
@@aaroncake
Hello again well sorry I breezzed typing .I had to run. Well yes these are multi purpose gauges so I got a speedo from an rx7 and I had adapted it to the Volvo cluster but then I have to figure the right mileage cause I went from 14 to 17 in tires and from Auto to stick so to place safe I got one but as a gift from a friend. I was in Toronto last July and I was wondering how far you were. Anyway good seen you are back on track . Slowly but steady .
I've been with my project for 3 years and maybe another one ok seeya!!!
instant like and subscribe, i absolutely love cosmo's, really excited to see how this goes.
Edit: wow ok, so its a 11 year long resto. now i'm twice as interested
I also make the same noises when handling a tachometer @ 4:21
Has anyone handled one and not done it at least once in their life?
He's Back bois!
