- It's been a long while, hasn't it? Who would have thought that retrofitting a 44 year old instrument cluster with modern electronics and building almost everything from scratch would be complicated? Yep, that's right. It's part 49 of my '76 Mazda Cosmo Restoration! And once again, I am continuing to work on the instrument cluster. This time I'm getting the final touches done by building the backlight boards, making the boards for the fuel and temp gauges, making some mistakes, and finishing up with all the cluster innards. It's another electronics episode mostly, which I know isn't my usual fare, however "electronics" is a big part of an electronic instrument cluster. And man, I'd have to say this is the most complicated single project I've done on this car so expect at least another episode to finish up the cluster.

I actually designed some of those boards very early on, I think on Christmas day 2019. So the files sat around a while before being used.

That's exactly it: lives and responsibility outside of the projects. It all changed in 2015 when I bought this house/shop and that is what became the priority project. I have to spend my time making a neglected, gross and "handyman special" house livable above all else.

Oh you have no idea. This is a perfect example of "scope creep". The most complicated project I have done on this car and between you and me, I'll be damn happy when it is done.

Hmm, now I'm not so sure I want to take a look. But, RUclips can play videos at 2x, and if you open the dev tools and manipulate the page directly, at any speed you want...Up to about 4x is watchable depending on the presenter.

Folks out there complaining about projects taking too long like binky. Last time I saw you - you introduced me to VS Code and now I’m on Emacs.
How the heck do you still have hair on the top of your head with all that thinking... making the cluster gauge outline was genius!
People who complain about things taking a long time have never done a project themselves. And that's not a bad thing, it just means that they may not have the understanding that these things don't happen instantly, and in the real world are subject to time and budget availability. Filming it also can slow work down considerably, on top of that being the editing time. At any rate, I dislike VS Code more and more. Constant updates, the sluggishness of all Electron applications, lack of a reasonable UI...I only keep it around for editing YAML and because it does have some neat features like split editing...Don't know if you noticed, but I think the hair on the top of my head is slowly being burned off.

@@aaroncake well either way another video is very welcome buddy, wondering if the RFID is still in your hand and if it's caused any issues?
The RFID tag is definitely still in my hand (I expect it to be there for life) and has caused no issues. I can feel that a coating of collagen has been formed around it and now keeps it in place. I've slowly been adding RFID readers to things like my computers, so all I have to do is scan my hand to log in. Going to build a new gun safe and have the RFID reader by the key.

I am not kidding, i was thinking about you and your project just yesterday and wondering if you possibly gave up on it! Now, one day later you upload another video! AMAZING!
Always a treat to watch a new episode! I had almost exactly similar project a while back, I needed a vector image of a gauge face and outline. I scanned the gauge face over a graph paper so the size was easy to verify/adjust and brought the bitrmap into Inkscape.
A lot of people don't realize how handy a scanner or photocopier is in a shop. Especially when doing things like making flanges.

Yes, it really has been over a year. Didn't know it would take this long to be honest. The cluster in itself has become a massive project.

Now I am currently rew swapping my RX 8 with a wild true 800 hp cosmo engine with all the beans. I've been a metals fabricator for 30 years now and also fly my self built fpv drones . I make components for a Spanish drone company from Australia as well . You have inspired me to start using some more fancy electronics in my build now as I have made a few simple pdb panels for my drones . Thanks for your meticulous build approach , it's really got my head spinning !! Greetings from Australia mate !!

90% of this video went over my head, but I love watching the complexity of the build process... even if it has been 10yrs since I started watching.
Though to be fair, I've had my non-turbo base model FC for the same 10yrs and despite having massive plans, all I've managed to do is some basic suspension mods and an exhaust that I regret. lol
Thank you. I worry a bit about these electronics heavy videos being not what people want to see. But then again, modern vehicles are like 99% electronics so it is a big part of building...I mean really building, not just assembling...a car. Haha, I think a LOT of people build exhausts for NA rotarys that they end up regretting! It took me years to get the exhaust note right on my FC and 3 different exhaust iterations.
I like the exhaust note, but the shop that built my mid-pipe didn't use stainless flanges to match the pipe so it's already rusting through.
Anyways I think the people that watch your channel enjoy the detail you go into, I certainly do. I'm actually using the info you gave in your tail light conversion for doing my own since I actually like the S4 tail lights, but no one seems to do a kit for them.
Thanks for keeping the project going aaron, in a way i hope it takes you another 10 years. I really enjoy the process more than the end results. Thats why i usually give my projects away(not something of the cosmo's magnitude of course).
I enjoy designing and making stuff, after im done i usually move on to something else so i have to move said projects along.
Thats why im kind of bummed that binky is getting close to the end.

I really do hope it doesn't take another 10 years. ;-) However I fear it might. Because honestly, like you, I enjoy starting new projects and would really like to have everything currently in my life done so I could move on to some other stuff I've wanted to do for a while like a rocket belt, turbojet, a new hovercraft, folding car trailer, get my pilot's license, get my motorcycle license, etc.

Best thing to watch of the first day of 2021. Glad to see you back at it and I hope we get more updates during this year.
I never really stopped working on it, just have a lot less time when my priority is renovating a whole house to work on the car. Combined with delays created by COVID-19. And as it turns out, the instrument cluster is the most detailed project I've done on the Cosmo so doing it, filming and editing is a lot of work (the editing is fairly brutal because most shots are long sequences, or combining/syncing computer screen captures).

Ya know, it's actually not too bad. All looks tiny at first but with a magnifier and a set of tweezers surprisingly easy to work with. In fact I much prefer SMD assembly now to through hole. But wait until you see next episode...lots of tiny soldering.
