  • Today I'm going to show you how you can add an electric power steering system to any car or vehicle. The advantage of using a Prius electric power steering system or other adaptive electric steering is simplicity. Unlike hydraulic power steering, an electric power steering conversion only requires 3 wires (power, ground and 12volt on) so no messy hydraulic lines to worry about. The Toyota electric steering systems are widely available on ebay and can usually be found for around $250. Alternatively you can use electric power steering from a Kia, Hyundai and even Nissan.
The EPS system I chose is from a 2014 Kia Soul. This DIY EPS conversion is perfect for muscle cars or any other system that lacks power steering. I knew I needed the EPS conversion on the dune buggy when I used a faster steering rate and now its like a new buggy.

Not sure how I stumbled on to this channel, but it looks good. Nothing screams 'my kind of people' like MIG welding steering components in flip flops.

Just as a point of information, these power steering units have a small rubber gear inside that’s well known to deteriorate and “thunk” when you power them up and turn the wheel. If this happens, simply unbolt the motor from the side and inspect that rubber gear. If it’s bad, replace it and it’s fixed. Dorman sells the gear for around $12.

This video should be used as an example of how NOT to use a welder and angle grinder.

Man, I can't believe the number of times you had the ground on the opposite side of a bearing or u-joint from where you were welding. All that current flowing through a bearing. Not good.

Water cooling the welds makes them brittle. It’s better to use compressed air. How a part that experiences high torque you want the welds to be as strong as possible.

I'm just starting this same mod on my daughter's '63 Nova. I'm going to retain the column shift for the automatic by shortening the shifter mechanism and using a shift cable setup, (I think and hope). Failure is not an option but, just in case, I know where there's another column the same color. I got my steering gear, module, and plug from an '09 Corolla for about $100 at the local u-pull-it yard.

Outstanding job man. I’ve been looking for ideas for my lawn tractor and this is giving me some ideas. Btw, I see you practice safe welding in flip flops like I do. Cheers

Just a little insight.... You can solder a wire into the connector without dissasembling the unit. Just tin the pin and the wire, and then just solder away. you can simply fill the connector hole with silicone after to seal it up. SAVE YOURSELF HOURS! :)

After paying extra for a mustang II “power rack&pinion” unit and putting up with a leaky power steeing pump Oh, I sure wish I knew about this 3 years ago!❤

  • @kdautoks

"The Ranger Station" guys have been doing it for years and have info on many eps setups with associated wiring diagrams. I did it on a John Deere B tractor!

  • @travismathis6084

Now I gotta go find 2 of them lol … one for the buggy I plan to start building this winter and another one for my golf cart! While i was watching your video I figured out how to mount it … In theory so I’ll go look in the morning and see if im thinking right….. I would really like to find smaller PS units , my room is going to be tight… I’ll dig around online and see if I can come up with a smaller unit that will work…. THANK YOU for the knowledge and inspiration! Keep building stuff so i can learn more!!!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

hoping I can get this to work for my 1957 chevy truck! Would love to have power sterring in it! glad my feed showed me this channel.

  • @terriecotham1567

Quick tip on connectors, there's two parts of the connector even on PC boards and if theirs a number or name or both at times its possible to find the connector and the part number for the mate.

  • @Tatertot_Tommy

Just for future reference, you could also just connect the single wire to pin #1 in the exterior connector receiver, and then simply fill the remainder of the void in with RTV, or you could put a release agent on it and fill it in with some Bondo to make your own connector "pigtail".
