Part 53: Again With The Intercooler?! - Part 2 - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration

  • In part 53 of my '76 Mazda Cosmo restoration, I finish the rework of the water to air intercooler I started in episode 52. With the ideal position established, all the tubing needed to be changed to match. And if I was doing that, well, I figured I may as well ditch the pedestrian silicone couplers and clamps for something much more awesome. This is another episode filled with cutting, grinding and TIG welding. The final product is exactly how it should have been from the start!

  • @KenanTurkiye
    @KenanTurkiye 2 года назад +1

    29:20 If that movie was released in 1983 and Mazda Cosmo/Rx5 was released in 1976-78 in N.America, that would mean that the car in the pic is at most 7 years old (if we are to go by the avarage, 6 years old at the filming), and would most likely not need a rear muffler replacement, why is this important because the rear muffler and tip does not look like one of the original rotary ones rather piston powered variant the Mazda 121.
    Another hint is the wheels, allow wheels which the rotary engined variant came out with, but the one in the pic lacks.
    Also, we can see the roof is vinly in body color, (this time I am assuming) the piston versions had not the rotaries.
    One final note, considering the burnt oil with fuel is normal for rotaries, the rear tail lights above the exhaust outlet does not seem too discolored, but maybe this might be a small 'evidence' as the car in the pic was merely 5-7 years old, but it could also be another proof that it was the piston variant.
    I owned and modified a Cosmo/Rx5, and still dream of building another in metallic blue.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  2 года назад

      Honestly, I can't make out the exhaust in the video. Maybe if I paused it frame by frame. My Cosmo clearly had the Landau top judging by the rust lines and condition of the roof. As long as I've driven rotary vehicles I have never seen discoloured tail lights from exhaust except for those cars poorly modified. So the the mystery remains.

    • @KenanTurkiye
      @KenanTurkiye 2 года назад

      @@aaroncake I had an original exhaust when I bought my automatic original one owner 50k miles Cosmo, so if I'm not mistaken the exhaust on that does seem like a small piece, unless of course it's on the wrong end of the car, as the pic may be flipped?
      Regarding the smoke, many owners in N.America who were newish to rotary engines could and would ruin the corner seals in a short time, and considering the size of Mazda's a lot of the new owners were female and we know how well they top up the oil. : )
      About the landau top, I'm not too sure if the rotary versions had them, it may be something for the N.American market.
      However, your build is legendary enough anyways Aaron :) , loving every episode, and wish you all the best success with it.

    Glad to see you are still hard at work on this!
    Are you going to do the interior or the bodywork/paint first?

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  2 года назад +1

      The rough bodywork can be done at any time, however the paint will be almost last. Trying to figure out when to do the interior actually because it also is tied in with audio. Hopefully soon.

    Great video showing great work once again. I was thinking that such long pipe sections need a rubber or silicone peace to dampen vibrations and equal out shrinking and expanding from heat? Why am I wring here? ( I don't have any experience with this kind of car work)

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  2 года назад

      Most of the intake tract is aluminium a well so expansion should be rather constant. And keep in mind that the couplers do have some play. It doesn't look like it but they handle misalignment. I am eventually going to support the cold side of the intercooler tubing with a bracket from the engine however I am waiting on that because I think other things will be integrated into that bracket (like the oil filler tube).

    I think we need aaron to do a video showcasing the whole car briefly and show us how the RX7 is doing. We need car updates here aaron. I subscribe to multi million sub channels and this is the one I wait for and watch secretly while I'm at work, shh don't tell anyone. 😉 I know your a single person doing some incredible stuff on the car and doing other stuff humans do in their normal daily life. Is there an approximate timeline on which you'll have the cosmo running and moving under its own power? Idc if it's done, I just want to hear those doritos chopping.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  2 года назад +2

      Yeah, maybe at some point I'll do a fractional episode and just summarize what I've done so far, and what I still have to do. Regarding the RX-7, nothing really to report. Other than the fact the body is showing its age and at some point I will have to make a decision about what to do. No timeline on the Cosmo. It will be done when it is done and starting the engine will be one of the last steps.

    I’m looking at one of these for my project, but how do you get rid of the air pocket in the upper side of the cooler when filling? Fill off the car? Bleed nipple?

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  Год назад +1

      Ultimately I plan to add a small bleed at the highest part which will plumb back to the reservoir. It's kind of going to go into a "misc" episode later on.

    Every time I see a video come out on your channel, I reminded of the fact that when I started watching this I was a... teenager I think?
    Maybe that's a slight exaggeration but certainly early 20s. I'm getting older I don't like it
