    As a former crewleader for a blast and paint facility at a railyard where we'd strip, spray and re-stencil all kinds of rail cars...I can tell you that 4 hours is not that bad at all for laying down primer on a semi frame, especially considering that youre making due with what you've got and dont have a whole paint facility to work in.
    Solid work, Matt. 🍻

    Ok so I’ve never really been the guy who talks about safety in the past, but after a recent accident that caused me to get 21 stitches in a finger and come close to losing it, safety is higher up on my list currently lol. Seeing you spend lots of time under that frame with just a chain between you and severe injury, or more than likely a gruesome death, was a bit concerning. You can get hurt in an instant, and you’ll think “why was I so stupid taking that risk?” I just got in a hurry and put my hand in the wrong place and nearly crushed my finger off, and after 2 months it’s still healing and I wish I would’ve just taken the minimal effort to be a little safer. It wouldn’t have taken you 2 minutes to go get something to stick under that frame as a safety in case the chain broke. I’ve always been taught to never trust my life to hydraulics also. I know we all do in certain situations, but this was an extended period of time where something could’ve went wrong. Stay safe brother and keep on doin what you’re doin I’ve always enjoyed your videos and thought if I lived a little closer we’d definitely be buddies cause we both dig old stuff.

    I saved Matt’s video until after I watched the golfers struggling with the Troon course at the Open. I think Matt did the primer coat in about the same wind that was blowing over in Scotland.
    1. Again good editing to use speeded up shots to condense some of the painting.
    2. Glad to see a mask used while painting. Good to see final results.
    3. Read comment that Matt should get painter overalls. Maybe then Eva wouldn’t have to throw away his shirts.
    4. Glad to see ongoing progress on the Autocar; lots of interest in that project.
    5. Wish more viewers would show Matt support and loyalty so he can expand what he’s doing. He has lots of thumbs-ups, but we should try to get him up to a million subscribers.

    The output shaft for the front diff is made to be unbolted at the 4 bolt retainer and pulled out the back of the axle housing as an assembly. Then you can inspect the output shaft bearing and retainer for wear and install a new seal and gasket. surprised to see someone still has SQHD's rebuilt on the shelf. FYI test fit an axle shaft in both units to make sure they have the same spline count each one, those units were available with two different spline counts for SLHD and SQHD.

    Hi Matt. I’ve been watching for about a year now and yesterday I went back and watched the series of videos on the ‘57 Autocar from 3-4 years ago. I was struck by how far you’ve come since then and I just wanted to say how impressed I am with all you’ve been able to do since those early days of working in the mud! I found myself thinking that you should use one of your forklifts to unload the heavy truck parts from your flatbed, then quickly realized that you didn’t even have a forklift back then, lol.
    Sometimes we get caught up in our busy lives and we forget how much we’ve really accomplished, so I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your videos. I admire your dedication to saving old iron from the scrap yard and I wish you continued success in following your passion. Whenever you get frustrated, just remember how far you’ve come and keep on truckin’ brother.

    • @BlueDually4x4
      @BlueDually4x4 Месяц назад +3

      While I love the Autocar, the Mack is actually setup for heavy haul. As Scrappy pointed out the drop axle needs duals, which means its a 20k pound axle. Combined with the drive axles allows him legally 54k pounds on the three rear axles, plus it has a 20k pound steer axle. So depending on bridge laws out his way the truck is legally good for 74k pounds itself. The Autocar guessing at a 15k steer and 34k for the rear tandem means its only good for 49k pounds total. Both trucks might have 46k pound drives, but in Idaho you can only be that heavy with unprocessed commodities. A lot of states have different regulations, but from the three states I am familiar with, the Mack would be fine at 74k pounds plus what ever the trailer is good for. The Mack and a tri axle lowboy out around me would be good for 128k pounds gross, which is the max weight for generally annual oversized load permits.

    • @johnwilliams4545

      @@BlueDually4x4 the unfortunate thing about the Mack purchase is that it makes the Autocar redundant. Every time Matt mentions running the Autocar down the interstate at 70 I shudder lol. I look forward to seeing how this build ends up but I'd keep this as a local unit and use the Mack for any long trips.

Up hills was slow going (40 mph) but doable. If you are planning on getting much heavier you will want the 13 speeds, or better yet 13 speed with overdrive.

    Matt, benefit from my advanced age & wisdom - thoroughly paint all of the crawl-under, inside, and bend over weirdly parts first, or in 2- alternate stints, then shoot the side(s), depending on the choice while relatively 'resting' yet still shooting paint onto the metal, save the 'easy' part for last & it helps work out some of those new 'kinks' your body just acquired painting the awkward parts.👍🇺🇸😎
    And as far as automotive/truck frames and underbodies go, I am still lobbying, while searching for the perfect shades to patent the color shades for the color 'American Roadfilm' with varying shades for regions, and seasons. See it new, let people get used to it, then 500,000 miles later, still looks new🤣

Regarding your windshield: Would it be possible you could replace the glass without a center divider, and have a one-piece windshield? Somebody somewhere in America should be able to make one for you. Only thing is you'd have to extend the sweep of the passenger-side windshield wiper. I have been looking forward to the Autocar transformation!

    I'm sure someone else probably mentioned it, but on those axle shafts, after you remove the nuts, use a sledge and strike the end where those two half moon risers are. That's why they are there..
    Couple hard blows, will pop the axle out.
    She's going to make you a nice truck.

      Yeah good choice on not using weller. Their differentials are okay’ish. Do not, under any circumstance use any weller Detroit dt12 part. Everyone I have seen a customer install had to have oem shift controllers installed on them to go into gear. After the reman cost, r&l time. More diag time to figure out why the new trans won’t take gear, then r&l trans again to install a new shift controller, they end up spending more than just buying oem from the start.

    Your buddy Sam gave you great advice. I've used PPG epoxy primer and that stuff seals out everything! I sprayed it on bare metal and never top coated it and never had a rust problem. It lasts forever and is really durable. One of the best primers you can use to seal out rust and protect metal. The Autocar is really going to look great after this.

    • @brianmatthews9697
      @brianmatthews9697 Месяц назад +2

      It is good stuff but I've been told it does not like UV and should be top coated. I don't think it effects it's performance just it's color. I used under my car and clear coated it and it looks the same after 5 years. I had a ton of clear coat so I tried it, worked out.

    Matt
    Take a 36"x 3/16 brake line and make yourself a proper blow gun.
    Throw that siphon feed gun away and get a gravity feed. So much less overspray.
    😊 Keep in mind epoxy primer has an open time during which you can topcoat it. After this time the topcoat won't stick and you will have adhesion problems. Ask me how I know.

      Matt, watching you using a hammer and chisel to remove the axels. I watched a man remove the axels from his Pete. He loosened the axle nuts he used a 12 pound sledge to hit the center. This compressed the gasket and allowed the cone washers to release then pulled the axel out. Might work for you.

    Increase the paint flow and move fast. Cut the time in half and get better finsh. Important to increase paint flow when doing the cab and hood to avoid that dry spray when you lap back. In our Freightliner truck assembly plants, two guys paint a chassis in 5 minutes. Thats before air and electricsl lines though. Great video. You are a machine!

    Some others PLUS AUTOCAR …
    Stuff like factory photos / blueprints / posters … trucking magazines and ads .. some hard to find … this stuff. It only pops up on eBay once in the blue moon.

      The only thing is that those air compressors do not need to run at idle for long periods of time. They are made to make air and the unloader gets hot running at idle. It would be better to crack open another valve to atmosphere to make the compressor have to work. I have did this many times over thirty years of having a sandblasting and painting business. I was thinking of getting a smaller compressor for the paint work, but then that's just more to have to move to a job and maintain. Now, I don't do any mobile work, so glad I didn't get a small gasoline air compressor.
