  • DC Comics reminded readers not to buy into any of their new concepts, because they will always screw it up. This week Batman #148 drops the ball with the best new Batman villain in years, Failsafe. Batman #148 features a massively rushed ending to get to Absolute Power with multiple cliche payoffs and some that don't make any sense. Wes and Jim review Batman #148, an enormous exercise in frustration that completes Chip Zdarsky's Failsafe story after 2 years. DC Comics screw up best new Batman villain in years.

I like that Bruce talked to his family about the mistakes that he did over the past year or so and made amends for what he’s done to them, including Jason. I also like that the entire Batman Family worked together to defeat Zur, a clone of Bruce who became Robin, and one of Bruce’s mentors. The one thing I can criticize is Tim’s recent Robin suit because it looks off and that I prefer him wearing his original pre-Flashpoint Red Robin suit because it’s a sign of maturity, evolution, and character growth. Overall, this comic is good!

You know mix and match toys? The little figures of different animals, aliens, robots, etc. where the gimmick is you can take them apart and combine different pieces? Put the elephant’s head on the giraffe’s torso, put the giraffe’s legs on the monkey’s torso, and so on? I’m starting to think DC is using the same kind of strategy to make characters now. “Let’s put Batman’s head on Cyborg’s body and give him Mr. Freeze’s backstory!” It’s fine to do that kind of thing sometimes, but not all the dang time.
13:35- What the frick is up with laced-up boots that tall? Multiple people would get murdered in the time it took to lace those things up!

What it did was show just that they are a bunch of lazy writers and had to resort to a story from the Batman animated series called “his silicon soul”….. which had the exact same premise machine pretending to be Batman but when it thought it killed the original Batman it overrode his programming and went into a rage where it destroyed its master Hard’Ack… and ended its own life. Of course Batman wasn’t really killed but thinking he was dead is what caused the machine to be defeated and frankly even though there’s a slight difference it’s almost the exact same premise!

I’d give the overall Failsafe run a 7/10. Biggest problem was, of course, Gotham War because it definitely kneecapped the series. A pointless event with no consequences since everything has already been fixed. On the plus side, at least there is no chance that they’ll ever mention this event ever again. Beside that I thought the idea that the Bat-family would actually believe Bruce would install his mind into a robot body really dumb. As for this latest issue I agree that the ending to this story was rushed. Felt weird to me that Bruce would allow Jason to simply die for him and how anti-climatic defeating Zur turned out to be. Beyond those gripes I thought the series was a fun ride. Interested to see what comes next seeing as how Zdarsky still has more to go. My only hope is that this is the last time they use the “Bruce is on rocky terms with the family” bit for a while.

(Penguin had to pretend to die at the beginning so King could write his sh*tty maxi series, then the story was put on hold for “night terrors” then Batman and Catwoman had to have a fight so the “Gotham War” crossover could happen, and now we are just going through the motions until “absolute power” can start.)

Let's be honest, the whole Zur-En-Arrh thing was utter bullshit since Grant Morrison.
Batman implanting an alternative personality in himself like he has the skills of Professor Hugo Strange? Please, Zur-En-Arrh is one of those concepts that most comic fans don't mock cause Morrison wrote it so it MUST be good, it's not like it doesn't make sense at all for the character, it's the reader that is too dumb to understand it.
Failsafe is just worse, Batman shouldn't be portrayed as a tech genius and even if he had the skills to create something like Failsafe really of ALL Batman villains Penguin is the one that tricks the "no kill" protocol? The same guy that tried to fake his death and blame it on Joker just to make a robbery disguised as a nun? The same guy that escaped prison faking death thanks to Mortimer Kadaver? How many times Penguin is gonna use the same trick before Batman says "Yeah you know what? I'm gonna explicitly put into Failsafe's code that if the guy that was killed it's Penguin then it doesn't count"
P.S. Jorge Jimenez is the new Scott McDaniel, a great artist that when had the possibility to be the artist on Batman never had a story that made him stand out

Zdarsky is an okay writer, but he clearly needs a good editor to help him flesh things out and tell him “no, this is a dumb idea” whenever necessary. I know it would probably raise a lot of eyebrows, but DC needs to take a risk and see if they can pay Cates to come over. I stopped reading monthly hero titles a couple of decades ago and Grant Morrison's run on Batman was among the reasons, I struggled to read each issue. I tried to give him another chance with Green Lantern, but I only made it about 3 issues before I gave up despite the nice Liam Sharpe artwork.
I tell you this as a former fan of his work. I have virtually everything the guy's ever done and he's written a few of my very favorite comics, if that says anything. For me, the last really great thing he did was WE3 back in 2004. He can be brilliant when he wants to be, but it seems like he's not putting much effort into what he's doing anymore.

I feel like Batman in general has been hopeless ever since Tom King killed off Alfred. There is a Quora question/rant about how you can kill Batman. The answer in the Quora rant is that you only have to kill off Alfred. And they give all kinds of evidence justifying how Bruce would die with Alfred no longer in the picture. I would argue that you could kill off Batman/Bruce Wayne simply by giving Alfred a forced vacation for a couple of months. This is what the current writers of Batman don't get. Alfred is essential for Batman to work in the long term! More essential than Robin or Bruce's millions or a Bat cave under a mansion or all of Batman's wonderful toys. In the essential category I would put Alfred and Batman's amazing Rogues Gallery neck and neck with one another. If DC knows what is good for them and us as Bat fans, they will stop pushing Joker and Joker related characters on us and bring back the Goddamn butler (a.k.a. Alfred "Da Man" Pennyworth)!!!

Jimenez’s art has been the only saving grace of the whole Zdarsky run. But the way his men are slowly starting to have an effeminate manga look to them is annoying me. Tim and Jason looked like emo teens, too. And hope that Robin outfit Tim wore is never, ever seen again!!

Well, not really. It was to be expected. DC can't deliver on practically anything these days. That's their Absolute Power.

Hey Wes and Jim. I know you have to report the bad comic book news with the good comic book news. But why are all of these videos recently so negative? Why can't we talk about positive, hopeful stuff like the amazing Gi Joe A Real American Hero kickstarter campaign that is going on right now?
You can't say this is not newsworthy. The campaign now holds the record for most money made in 1 day for a graphic novel or comic book compendium. As we speak, they have already made over $2 million dollars with this campaign. But let's not just focus on the money they are making. The attention this Joe compendium is getting will definitely spark some more awesome new GI Joe content from Image and Skybound. And hopefully, the publisher can come out with the rest of Larry Hama's GI Joe: ARAH run when it was it different publishers prior to the relaunch with issue 301.
Let's also talk about how much Image is killing it of late. Between the Energon Universe, Ghost Machine properties, the relaunch of GI Joe: ARAH, some stellar Tony Fleecs series, and the staying power of the Spawn Universe books, Image is presently in a very good place.

If you want good Failsafe stories get the real thing in Infinite Crisis era OMAC Project 3.5.
Failsafe is the bargin bin knockoff of that story.

Failsafe sucks. The Grant Morrison version of Tlano, the Batman of Zurr-Ehn-Arr also sucks, too. Another much more crazy, and violent personality for Bruce Wayne? That's idiotic. They should've just left him as an alien super-hero who is from another Earth-like planet that when he is on his homeworld, he is similar to a human, but when he travels to Earth, he becomes a super-human similar to Superman. The same effect happens to humans who travel to his home planet. Which is why Batman would become a Superman-like super-hero if he ever traveled to the Planet Zurr-Ehn-Arr.
The Silver Age sci-fi story was way better. The artificial split personality is stupid. Failsafe is just as dumb as Brother Eye. The A.I. sentient computer hardware and software program and virus deliberately designed to continue Batman's mission even after Bruce Wayne's death. Yeah because that totally sounds like a Batman story. 🙄😒
No, that kind of science-fiction story is not a street level crime drama worthy of Detective Comics. That's some kind of advanced Brainiac-like alien technology and weaponry bullshit that Superman should be fighting against. It's way too epic and it requires the presence of extremely powerful and strong super-human beings, not costumed human vigilantes.
If it was me writing for a Batman comic book, he would be fighting against people who are on the same level as himself. I would've had characters from back in the day coming back to try to eliminate Batman. Such as Nocturna, a seductress who was formerly the lover of both Bruce Wayne and Batman, respectively.
Night-Slayer (Anton Knight) formerly the Thief Of Night, a.k.a. Night-Thief, who is the former lover and partner-in-crime of Nocturna, but who is now both her and Batman's arch-enemy.
The KGBeast, and the NKVDemon, two best friends, and business partners who are communist mercenaries and assasins from Russia and Germany, respectively, and who are among the most dangerous and deadliest of Batman's arch-enemies.
The Reaper, who is an even more extreme, powerful and strong costumed vigilante than Batman is.
And Pagan (Marian Mercer), who is a brutal, ruthless vigilante who hunts down, fights and kills sexual predators. The Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, etc. are all overused. Those others are the kinds of people who should be causing trouble on the mean streets of Gotham City much more often.
Instead of wasting good opportunities to write good stories by focusing on bad plots and premises, they should be using these old school underused DC Comics comic book characters who are among Batman's most underrated gallery of psychologically damaged rogues.

Writers and editorial are very good at taking solid ideas and scribbling all of their own “fan fiction” over the top of it.

Have to be honest, Jorge Jimenez is ok. He is not a great artist. His artwork does not have the right feel for Batman. I flipped through this and the artwork is not engaging, and everyone has mile long pencil legs that are off putting. Also that is the worst looking Bat symbol on Batman's costume I have ever seen. Ugh...enough with clones too. The next stage of this series has to be back to basics and make it simple. Just do Batman....that's all the Batman fans want. WTF20.

@@tonyfrickey9062 Yeah I agree. I look at Dan Mora and it's rather generic and doesn't really do much for me. There are many other artists out there better then these 2 guys. Course some of them aren't doing monthly books though. Just covers, or issues here and there.

I really liked the chip Zydarsky run on Batman. I think Bob Kane and Bill Finger would be proud.
