The X-Men Comic Nobody On Any Side Asked For

- Marvel Comics relaunched X-Men in perplexing fashion under Jed McKay and Ryan Stegman. X-Men #1 is a comic nobody really wants. It's not for new fans or old fans. It's not even a comic for Ryan Stegman fans. As this is easily the worst he's looked in years. What you get from X-Men #1 is a mishmash of ideas and characters into one boring, lackluster package. Wes and Dok review X-Men #1, a comic with zero identity or idea about what it wants to say. The X-Men comic nobody on any side asked for.

You can't rise from the ashes when it's the same people that burnt it to ruins still attached.
@@MaverickhunterXZero is it tho,, they got rid of everybody attached starting with Hickman. Kevin Feige brought in Corny Ass Tom Brevoort to wrap and kill KRAKOA. What we have now iZ a lame duck version of X-Men until the MCU iZ ready for them, and then it's going to be the Real Reboot.
It literally looks like Juggernaut grabbed some red duct tape and taped an "X" on his typical outfit.
If they made this the canonical reason why his outfit just looked like that, it would get a light chuckle out of me.
Cyke: "Cain. You're an x-man. You need an X symbol on your armor."
Cain: "Fine! Done."
Cyke: "You just put two pieces of duct tape on your helmet, Cain. You can't go out like that."
Cain: "Go on. Try and stop me."
@Dunebat it's looks better than his old costume, the one where he had pipes sticking out of him
Disney Marvel doesn't understand their characters, heroism or drama. We had a lot of great X-Men to enjoy.
X-Men just exist in the past now. These plant clones don't are the same characters that I grow up.
Disney just sees everything they own as an IP farm, not actual creative properties loved by fans.
I am so sick of 'Magento is right' , I'm sick of it in the comics, sick of it in X-Men '97 from these writers with warped moralities.
Magento is a villain! A tragic villain since Claremont yes, because you can see how he got where he got, and sympathetise with that, but a villain nonetheless.
He a classic comic example of becoming exactly what he fights and hates. He becomes all about mutant supremacy and humans as second class inferiors to be at best dominated if not exterminated (which he's attempted multiple times).
His tragedy is he becomes just like the Nazis he hates.
This is s guy who had casually genocided thousands (tried for millions and billions but the X-Men stopped him), tried to murder his own son (well when Quicksilver was his son) just fot standing up to him in Fatal Attractions before Wolvie intervined, then actually murdered him in a fit of ego driven anger leading to M-Day.
Outside of his redemption during the 80's he's a villain, and that the writers can't or won't see that explains much about current super hero comics.
Clearly these writers have warped morality. They are of the same type that see Jedi's as villains.
Remember the whole 'Daniel was the real villain of Karate Kid'.. these people don't realise that was just a joke.
They’re creating the “Post Humans” which is how the humans finally beat the mutants in Powers of X.
It's really funny to me that Juggernaut is still in a team book. The guy is literally an unstoppable force.
They made that same mistake in the early 2000s and during Krakoa where he was part of Nightcrawler's Legionaries.
@@spinningtornado4543 Yeah, I know... 😂. That makes it even funnier, in a sad way. 🥲. The fans hated that concept and they are still shoving it down our throats. "Because that's what X-Men fans want! Let us have Juggernaut in the main team, instead of other characters who make sense, with a "X" plastered to his helmet! But since this is a team book, we should absolutely ignore the fact that he is a giant, unstoppable wrecking ball and make him "punch" some random thugs." - X-Office 2024, probably. 🤦
@@hopefullyJustANormalPerson They are accumulating terrible decision after terrible decision with their plots and characters.
Juggernaut been on different X MEN teams and because of that people forgot how tough the Juggernaut once was it took a whole team to beat him and that team would need to work together to take his helmet off first
@@havokan45 I don't think they forgot. They neither know or care about these characters and write whatever they want. As I mentioned above, fans did NOT like him becoming an X-Man in the first place. Still, they are shoving it down our throats. Even if he is a good guy (which personally I don't want), why is he in the main X-Men team, and NOW of all the times? His outfit has to be one of the most ridiculous things Marvel has ever managed to come up with. 😞
Beast giving that woman a tour was boring. It's like they are trying to establish the X-men's new base. And stop making Magento a hero! He is supposed to be a villain, not the new X-men's leader!
All the X-Men become villains in Krakoa even Xavier now.
Magneto is supposed to be a villain. The dangerous type who thinks he himself is the hero.
We're not supposed to see him as a hero!
Thank God there are years and years of good stories to go back and read.
Just to give some perspective on why Marvel doesn’t hire W. Maxwell Prince or Ryan Parrott. If an Image writer is working on a book that is selling more than 10,000 copies a month Marvel would have to pay them more than their top rate for writers to match their Image Comic rate. And with the current culture at the big 2 the notion of a new writer coming in and making above top rate would create an untenable sh*tstorm. They might give a new writer an anthology story or a back-up because it’s easier to manipulate those numbers. If eventually a writer like Ryan Parrott would do a Marvel series just know that he took a pay cut to work on that book.
Hey Dok, personally I envy Beast not experiencing the last 35 years of the X-Men. He’s a very lucky man. 😂
I really do believe Marvel needs a hard reboot.
Or at least end the 616 timeline.
Because at this point almost all the characters have drifted soooooo far from their concepts and the writers have either no idea or no desire to keep these heroes true to their natures.
I just dismiss everything after 2015 as the continuity destroying non-fan fiction it is. No need for anyone to torture themselves with modern Marvel when there is enough classic stories to last anyone several lifetimes.
In my mind 616 ended with Secret Wars and everything after has been fake stories written by people that don't read comics.
Only if they reboot the creative and editorial team first.
@@uxm4life94you mean "the all new all different" garbage era
The 616 ended years ago. Battleworld was the reboot.
It’s okay. Just a mid book.
Krakoa was a nice What if story that went on to long now they need to focus back on the real timeline where Krakoa never happened and the X-Men are still Heroes.
They wasted a big chance in not use Moira death in the end of Rises Of The Powers Of X to erase all this shitty fanfic of the main canon. Now the X-Men are trapped in Krakoa Era forever.
Krakoa has left a stain on X-Men that I fear may never go away. I don't buy the whole 'Hickman had a plan, he never got to do it' thing. Surely a competent editor would say to a writer (whoever it is) before starring something as big as Krakoa.. "OK, but then what happens after this?".
The Moira thing was a big step too far. I mean, when I'm reading old Claremont X-Men now, am I supposed to think 'oh, there's Moira, she's lived through all this before, her and Charles are secretly manipulating everything??' .
@@gavsmi6452 It doesn't help that Moira is part of the people whose direct death generates the Days of Future Past dystopian future.
This can't be explained by either the retcon of her being a mutant or the powers she had that undoes any death she might have.
@@spinningtornado4543 exactly, too many plot holes are thrown up for an idea that sounds cool (to some).
It would be like me taking over Batman and my big idea is.. what if Bruce Wayne, was actually a robot this whole time!!
In years to come people might realise Moira and Krakoa was their jump the shark moment.
@@gavsmi6452 Moira retcon never make sense in first place. Krakoa Era is a big what if in the end.
Ashes to ashes…dust to dust…
The team dynamics are the worst here, half of the characters don't make sense together and there is no logical reason for Cyclops to choose them.
Cyke:"Okay, i need 1/1 gay and 1/1 black woman on my team, sadly Storm flew away, okay we can look some in our 998 roster"
Comparing Comboman to modern Marvel is a really unfair insult to Comboman.
This is Krakoa Phase 2. It's what Hickman planned.
Art is horrible
I honestly thought I was looking at Todd Nauck's artwork.
One correction, Magneto's real name is Max Eisenhardt. Read Magneto Testament. Erik was a forgery, Claremont tossed it out as a forgery years before Magneto Testament, when he wrote X-Treme X-Men.The Erik Lensherr name came about because Marvel went through a strange time when they wanted to make Magneto a Gypsy instead of Jewish. When Claremont found out he tossed Erik out as a forgery. Anyway, this was also highlighted in the recent X-Men Red series, where Magneto went back to using his birth name. This is why Beast is calling Max, because Magneto told him too. Oh, and his name prior to all of this back in the day was Magnus, so if anything Beast would call him Magnus instead of Magneto.
What is that Juggernaut dialogue? John Sublime and U-Men Memes? Also the beast is from 1985, no X-Factor memories even.
Juggernaut was best when he was stuck in Malibu's Ultraverse. Beast, Quinton Quire, and Psylocke should be on Avenger teams. Just not at the same time.
Beast was a past Avenger and good friends with Wonder Man
I also think Hank was happier on that team.
@@jamesroose4340 Most X characters are happier with the Avengers

Out of the ashes, into the trash can!
I'll only read it because of Cyclops. This book and the Phoenix solo series are the only books I'm interested in.
This is defiance of instructions to change things. "Whacha gonna do? Pay me less? Take me off after two issues?"
And obedient mutiny. "You said this many pages, heres this many pages. Everybody eating and touring the warehouse, but it's the correct number of illustrated pages. Suck it."
I got a feeling that Quintin is going to get killed off…just a feeling since they talked about him dying twice during the issue lol
meet the new x - series, same as the last x series under the legion of doofuses.
I read nothing in issue # 1 that convinced me to continue reading this new X-men series. A hard re-boot would have been better, in my opinion. This book is the equivalent of a poorly designed one size fits all article of clothing. X-men: Smoking Ashes. As David Keith (Jack Parkmam) said in Major League II, "New haircut. Same dead arm."
They wasted a great chance to reboot the things of the past years in the final issue of Rise Of The Powers Of X. Marvel is too coward and too arrogant to admit that Krakoa Era was a terrible mistake.
Listened to a podcast interview yesterday with Jed Mackay (only on i could find about X-Men from him). Jed Mackay came across as someone who A) Resents having this job as he has his hands full with Avengers, and B) Has no real love of the X-Men to begin with.
Couple that with Tom Breevort having a similair attitude and it seems we can expect some very average work.
After the mess of Krakoa, im not sure if that's better or worse.
New Krakoa "fans" never even bought a single issue. Old fans have no interest in the continuity busting non-adventures of the segregation clones. Unless they retcon Krakoa out of existence X-men comics are a dead brand.
Don't forget that they were also drug dealers and lodt all hints of morality, especially the psychics mind f-ing everyone
New era ? More like, same old stuff.
Just reset everything and bring it back to Spider Man Peter Parker, the X-Men and Wolverine, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers(solo books for Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor) and maybe Guardians of the Galaxy. Just like the the ultimate comics from the early 2000s
But the Ultimates line didn't work. Never-mind that it was killed internally for outshining the main line, it didn't work! Therefore, the current crapola must be maintained.
@@maxmazzotti6651 Agreed, it's Marvel's best course of action. Perhaps if they adapted the current Ultimate universe to do that (and make the new reboot less 'edgy' then the original Ultimate line, and more true to the characters).
But at this point some form of hard reset is required.
Beast to me looks like Namor with fur in this book but he does kind of has his X FACTOR look from the 80s and early 90s
After Blood Hunt issue 5 I’m done with anything new from Marvel and DC. It’s like these people want to bankrupt their companies.
Why did they make Juggernaut a good guy he gets less used that way, and he's taking spots from strong power mutants plus I just feel he's not as enjoyable and powerful
Looks like Stegman is trying to simplify his work the way Capullo did when he went to DC. That or maybe Stegman hired a layout guy and we are looking at Stegman’s finishes over someone else.
I’m surprised by the art. If anything I thought the art would look good. I had no hope for the story
The only thing I liked was the Campbell variant cover. I could give two shits about the content of the book.
I don't like that Cyclops looks like a young boy.
I am glad you made this video, I wasn’t planning on buying any. But, I was curious and since we don’t have a store anymore I can’t just pick up a book a thumb through it. I hate the art you showed. It looks cartoony and doesn’t fit the tone of the book. I saw panels where they reminded me of issues in the past. You are right, they are borrowing from the past and are not original at all. I plan on staying in the past, the future is dull and I’m keeping my shades on.
Why did I decide to give this a chance?
Jugger on x-men roster, while INK.... fought for mutants... and got ghosted by wokie writers, Primal .... forever forgotten.
X-Men: From the Asses. Written by asses. Couldn’t make out in the video the villain group name. Are they called The Foreskin? Name fits with the allegory they are pushing.
Wes, I appreciate your coverage of the current comic book scene. You read and review crap, so we don't have to!
Amen.
Magneto and Juggernaut are villains and should stay that way. Same for Mystique,Destiny, and the like.
I remember that Juggy and Magneto were the bosses of X-Men Children Of The Atom arcade game. Good times.

Jed Okay.
It’s ok not great like hoxpox. I hope it get its footing and improve.
This is definitely better than the latter part of krakoa. I guess the bar is too low and not that difficult to surpass.
After the scandalously awful jason aaron's run for the avengers, i thought it would be hard to be worse so i had some hopes for jed mckay's. Hum, it ended up being as bad as aaron's. I stopped after 6 issues. Good luck, x-fans!
Jed McKay’s Moon Knight is overrated.
@@DrDetfink Black Cat is somewhat fun. But I'm wondering why the hell Nick Fury is a black man now.
@Thinking Critical I'm kinda glad I got out of X Men right before New X Men. From you guy description, it a sounds like a chore to read.
I just picked up X-Men the Animated Series: Feared and Hated (1992 #1 - 8). I hope I can get the next graphic novel or more Marvel Masterworks taht will not be too expensive. Started with where Stan Lee's #1. I'm just going to go old school with X-Men. Marvel is better off just reprinting affordable trades (not the $75 to $125 stuff) of when X-Men was good. Give us that instead. Make more money.
While I don't fully disagree with you, THiS iZ not McCay's fault as much as it iZ Tom Brevoort and Kevin Feige.

That Stegman art downgrade is a shame. As a fan of anime/comic fusion art, he's one of my favorites, but you do notice the art in this book isn't up to par.
I thought it was Beast being crucified also I was lost for a minute.
It was only when he said 'bub' that I realised it was supposed to be Logan.
ryan stegmans art is so disappointing, but i moreso dislike that they still use Marte Gracias muddy plastic coloring that was all over the krakoa books
This book is awful. I most likely will not be picking up issue 2. I'll wait for my local library to get the trade.
I bought the first issue for ryan Stegman's art. I was disappointed. I don't know if he changed his style, but it looked terrible. I won't be buy the rest of the series. I also stopped buying Spectacular Spider-Men. I don't know what happened to Humberto Ramos art either. It looks like he's just going through the motions. John Romita Jr. art also seemed to tailed off
Cyclops is right, mutants and humans need to live apart. Just let the mutants go to space and get away from humans. Stop keeping the status quo.
No, this is not what the X-Men supposed to be. The dream is what made them in heroes in first place.
That was a harsh review. I agree with a lot of what you said, but I think it was a bit over the top with the negativity.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think this book will get anyone excited for the X-Men, but I don't think it'll turn anyone away either. For X-Men fans that want a return to basics, this does that.
The team is fine. The members have a history with the X-Men. Even Juggernaut has been an X-Man way before this. Kid Omega and Temper are the new kids, like I guess Kitty Pryde was when she joined, or Jubilee. MacKay also was able to outline some relationships between members, like the interactions between Magik and Juggernaut. One of my main criticisms of his Avengers run was that he wasn't good with character interactions. He's doing a better job here.
I'm not sure why you think the X-Men comics should ignore Krakoa. It's still canon and a big enough part of the X-Men's recent history that they really have to at least acknowledge that it happened. This includes Magneto no longer being a villain. You might not like it, but it his redemption was established in Krakoa and MacKay can't just ignore it because it was a bad idea. The narrative has to continue.
The U-Men are from Morrison's X-Men run and they were augmenting themselves with mutant gene's there as well. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having them as the villains in this book. We haven't seen them in ages, and Morrison's run was very popular.
Again, I don't think that this book was fantastic, but it was fine and did what it was supposed to do. I would describe it as "safe". Nothing offensive, but nothing that pushes the bar either. I think you should give it a few more issues.
The book sucks,X-Men are ruined forever while Krakoa be part of the canon. Hell all th X_men are dead and these characters are just Krakoan plant clones of the originals ones.
If you can talk about the Marvel writer that defamed the man that died at the Trump rally incident.
I'm giving it to Ollie Ollie all the way baby he can do the salmon ladder
Book is good I guess I'm that one guy
Mans said Combo Man 😏
Yes,there's no more hope to the X-Men comics at this point. Don't reboot the things was a huge mistake for Marvel. They are trapped in Krakoa Era forever from now. There's no come back from this. So Orchis is still around after all? Magneto returned to your old evil persona again? Who asked for a team with Juggernaut,Kid Omega and Idie in the cast? Everything sucks. Well, now I know that I made the right decision in don't read a new X book again. I'm surprised that McKay didn't Scott become like your old revolutionary days in Utopia Era again. Stegman art is pretty ugly too. X-Men 97 is the only true one X-Men for me now. Screw modern X-Men comics.
Why couldn't they have put rob liefeld or chris claremont on xmen instead?
Breevort stated in the case of Claremont that he "doesn't understand the characters anymore" : They are only making him write out of continuity stories and minis.
Both of him and Liefield stated previously that they hate the Krakoa era and anything tied to it : They won't write for it or any kind of follow up on it.
@@spinningtornado4543 well then why did he let Tini Howard write captain Britain with the og psylocke as cP
Captain Britain like she's wasnt lesbian before and why did they let Steve Orlando write iceman because he's just walking around and kissing random guys and gerry Dugan didnt really understands the characters and made them out of character then might as well hire Chris Claremont again because he written wolverine madripoor knights and it was great like he made one of the best wolverine and xmen comic you would think they would hire him again. @@davidfarrington4308 Not really. They just condensed every morally dubious out of character thing he ever did into the one from Krakoa, pretended like it was all according to some plan of his and upped them to a good 100 so someone like Sinister could declare he was worse than the Dark Beast version of him from Age of Apocalypse.
@@spinningtornado4543 I was reading Avengers as a kid in the 70s. I liked Beast back then although I didn’t know much about him. He was kind of mysterious to me because of his appearance.

In short, terrible writing.
So I will judge this on my own when I finally get a chance to read it. I will say that I don't like Juggernaut on the team because he basically makes the team way too powerful, and Juggernaut is supposed be the type of villain they have to rise up to defeat. They can ditch the Quentin Quire purple hair as that draws in no fans since most people don't have purple hair. I would not have chosen Stegman for this title because he hasn't done a team dynamic yet. Having said that, lets cut a little slack and give him a chance. He wouldn't be the first artist to have to ramp up to a team dynamic and get better as he goes along. He's still a better Spider-Man artist but again let's give it a little time. Should we be surprised that there are Krakoa references in there? No. I think that'd be naive an hell. Yes, Beast does come across a tad on the boring side as he should be bounding around the base as he shows it off if that is what you are going for with the sweet ole furry blue Beast. WTF20.
