    I'm always playing catch up with new releases - only 8 of the 75 books I read last year were published in 2023. Ha, the story was DEFINITELY trippy, but I loved every part of that book. Even if you completely skipped out on the story (the first time I read it I had a pretty serious cold and couldn't focus on much) the amazing art by the Moores would still put this book in the top 10 by itself. As far as brand new and not a collected edition of old material: Teen Titans: Robin and Noir Burlesque. I didn’t a lot of new things. Just a bunch that’s new to me. As far as single issues go Death of Power. Though obviously that’s a niche in a niche to recommend that to someone but I like the craft that’s being put into it. Yes, definitely a third crossover first. Putting that collection together would be easier than a DC or Marvel intercompany title surely.

      On that Swan Songs issue, the story of the marriage is just one issue. Thankfully the marriage portrayed in the issue is more of a situation of two people who stop communicating with each other, eventually stop trying to, and how each of them blames the other. No kids involved, that would have certainly changed the trajectory. I'm really sorry to hear that your Dad wasn't the greatest but I'm glad you were able to get past that and grow up despite it. Year one Gotham was another display on how tom king has no business touching the sanctity of what great writers have created! He has to let us know how bad anyone who has money is how bad and sorry Batman should be of his money. He is a destroyer of anything sacred if it doesn’t fit the narrative he wants to put out there ! 20th century wasn’t bad but 1. Really. I was out after 3 issues it just dialogues you to death.

    • @bunkmastab
      @bunkmastab  11 месяцев назад +2

      I appreciate getting different opinions on here and talking with people who thought differently than me. In the case of 20th Century Men, it's a very dense and dialogue-heavy book that's not going to be for everyone. I just happen to like books that are on the "talkier" end of the spectrum and really enjoyed how the book flashed through each faction of people affected by the war and showed us their perspective. And that Morian art, this felt like a book written for me, it may not be written for everyone.
      In the case of King as a writer, I don't really view any of his stuff as Canon or existing outside of the story that's being told right then and there. In the case of something like Mr. Miracle, I don't consider that a 4th World story, for instance. King is using Kirby's characters to tell his own stories. It doesn't lessen or affect the stories that the King told, those stories still stand on their own, completely separate from the King story. When I'm reading King, I'm not wondering how it fits into the greater comics narrative, I'm enjoying the story he's telling then. That approach isn't going to work with anyone, and I get why it rubs some people the wrong way. And it's definitely a story of the haves vs have nots, but we've had stories forever about the corrupting influence of money, this was just a 2023 version of that same tale. Not going to be for everyone, and that's cool! I'm glad there are comic stories out there for every kind of reader. What was your favorite book from last year?
