welcome to the deep rabbit hole that is Tim Minchin's collection of songs, you're in for a real treat
Tim is a renowned atheist and friends with Richard Dawkins himself. An Australian musical genius, comedian, writer and poet, he wrote the full musical score for the stage productions of Matilda and Groundhog Day, he is essentially a self-taught pianist who doesn't even read music. As a musician, you might enjoy his song "F sharp" !!!
I think he would indeed!
:D Yes. When he said C# Minor is the worst key, I was immediately thinking about F# :D
Actually he did not write the full score for any musical, just the music and lyrics. Christopher Nightingale is the composer for the score of Matilda. Please give credit to the correct artists, Nightingale deserves credit for his work as much as Tim does.
Ahhahahahah...Tim and gospel.
Having said that, I saw him live a few weeks ago and he was talking about how during covid he was stuck and needed a grand piano to practice on. He called his old school and they let him use the piano in the chapel. He said as he was playing through his songs he realised that a large portion of church experience is based on acoustics and communal singing.
He finished his show with Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen which he played with the whole theatre in complete darkness (so he couldn't even see what he was doing) and with everyone singing along to the chorus. It was very surreal just hearing the piano and his voice emanating from the stage along with the voices of a couple of thousand strangers. Then as soon as he finished and everyone was feeling almost holy, we just hear this "CHURCH, MOTHERFUCKERSSSS!!!" from the direction of the stage. 🤣😂
It was the best church experience I've ever had, and I was raised Christian. Best show I've been to as well. Tim is brilliant.
you're so lucky!
I loved being able to see the show in Perth, also got to finally meet his for a brief moment along with some other Minchkins (superfans 😊)
YES! Tim definately comes from a gospel background. His top three gospel hits are:
1. The Pope Song (featuring "If The Pope had a disco)
2. Thank you God
3. Come Home Cardinal Pell
😂🤣😂😂🤣 💯❗️
The Good Book even requires a boot!
@@jemxs You mean a trunk right? 🤭
Oh Emily you're an evil genius. Spot on .
@@jemxsBecause it's a book and it's good
Tim is from Australia and spent his 20s playing piano in clubs and bars and writing musical theatre for local groups (not Gospel as far as I am aware given he's a very well known Atheist). He got noticed when he decided to do "quaint cabaret" and won the newcomer award at the Edinburgh festival in 2005 (Darkside was the name of the show). He then got bigger and bigger playing the Royal Albert Hall and other large venues. He wrote the lyrics and music for Matilda the musical and he has also written the Groundhog Day musical. He's also an actor, director, poet, TV writer and all round genius. For comedy check out Thank You God, Storm, If I didn't have you, You Grew on me. For more serious work try White wine in the sun, Drowned, Not perfect, Beautiful, 15 minutes and his latest album "Apart together" and also his TV show Upright (includes the song The Aeroplane).
What I was going to say - and I'll add he has a personal interest in science and philosophy and is known for being outspoken on Australian politics. One of those people who make you feel completely talentless and stupid. Lol.
If you want to hear more of Tim's backstory, I'd suggest checking out Rock And Roll Nerd. I've been obsessed with him ever since I discovered him over a year ago. Like all great artists, Tim has many talents and will surprise you with the breadth of his artistry the deeper you go. He is as brilliant intellectually as he is musically, and his serious music can make you tear up as easily as his "silly" songs will make you laugh.
Don't forget "Carry You" for a real tearjerker song ❤
Aussie bloody legend! Tim is a national hero
Tim does have a jazz background.
Also this song is about Tim's struggle to get into the music industry in the 90s when depressing sounding grunge bands that sound like Pearl Jam were popular. As someone who considers himself super lucky, he finds it hard to relate. Lol. He is also an actor, so this is him rolling his skills together 🤣
Yeah, it's a big FU to Sony for rejecting him. They (much) later reconciled.
Haha, Tim starting in the church. Please, please react to “Thank you God” (with a symphony orchestra) It is truly amazing!
"Thank You God " and "Storm" are absolute must-see!!!
Serious chops is exactly how I describe Minchin. Absolutely brilliant.
Notice how he almost never looks at his hands while he's playing? So awesome.
Tim Minchin is the Albert Einstein of the entertainment world. Huge huge huge intelligence and talent
Tim is as brilliant intellectually as he is musicallly. I'd suggest Rock And Roll Nerd for a little more insight into his background. Tim can move you to tears with his more serious work as effortlessly he can get you howling with laughter at his "silly" songs.
Saw him in concert in Dallas TX many years ago. He is amazing. His piano skills are unreal. His son Thank you God is something you should check out.
I cannot wait for you to go on this magical mystery tour that is, Tim Minchin.
Tim is brilliant, very intelligent humour and pretty damn good on piano. Grew up in Western Australia and had some piano lessons but is predominantly self taught and I think couldn't read music, though he may be able to now. Wrote the musical scores for Matilda and Groundhog Day for Broadway and the West End. Definitely an atheist and not a fan of religion. He doesn't do comedy songs aa much anymore and has some very beautiful serious songs more recently. A fantastic new song is Play it Safe, which he wrote when commissioned to write a song to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House...is brilliant!
Oh if all that isn't enough he also has acted on TV and in a Broadway musical!!
An older comedy song that again shows off his voice and piano skill is You Grew on Me!
Enjoyed your reaction/analysis!
Seen him a few times and I love his comedy but the best shows I've seen are his current unfunny tour. His serious music is even better than his comedy. Saw him in Melbourne and Perth such a nice guy. Got his handwritten lyric and autograph tattooed on my arm
@@peterdubois65 oh I'm jealous, wanted to see him last year in Melbourne....my bank balance said no!
@jemxs was so good that I had to fly to perth to see the show again. If you ever get the chance again gi. In 59 years it's the best show I've ever seen
Absolutely. Play it safe is amazing and should definitely get more love. Tim is a genius
What you said!
Haha, Tim and Gospel don't belong in the same sentence. I hope you continue doen the tim minchin rabbit hole as I really enjoyed your reaction
I honestly don't know much of Tim's early life, but some of the best atheists were raised in church. eg: George Carlin.
Tim Minchin had brought me to so many reaction channels over the years, your reaction is among one of my favorites :) I hope to see more Tim from your side :) in the meantime I guess I will have to check out some of your other content (:
Welp.. i just found your Dimash content that will have be sorted for a some time at least :D
More Tim please! ❤❤
This just showed up in my feed. Great reaction, loved your comments. Check out Rock and Roll Nerd for a dive into Tim’s background.
"Ah. You're offbeat. Wicked." Kills me every time. This is the last song (minus encore) of a probable two hour show.
I love Tim Minchin! I met him after a show, he is such a nice guy, and his music is brilliant.
*FYI- he wears the heavy make-up so people farther from the stage can see his facial expressions during the show. He's hysterical.
Gospel? You should check out his songs Thank you God, The good book and if you dare The Pope song
Just to add further to all Tim 'fans', Tim performs in bare feet and he wears mascaras around eyes to aid in his comedic expressions - being tied to a piano, it is hard to use the rest of his body including hands to express himself. A lot of comments have already suggested Tim's vast catalogue of material, 'Inflatable you' is a comedic love song that shows off his wordsmithing. Also check out Beat poems 'Storm' and/or 'Mitsubishi Colt'. 'Absence of you' and recent song celebrating Sydney Opera House 50th 'Play it Safe' are a couple of modern songs.
It's vary rare that I subscribe to a channel after 1 viewing but sometimes it just has to be done. You can't go wrong with any Tim Minchin reaction, there are just variations between what is your favourite or not. They are all good. I haven't even looked at your back catalogue yet, on my way now.
Same (and also a Dave - spooky). Not "dimwit" but rather "village idiot" in my case.
Appreciate that!
Tim is simply brilliant. Almost anything of his on here will be entertaining but one of his more touching songs is White Wine in the Sun. Have a great one🎉
His song lullaby, if i didnt have you and canvas bag are well worth a listen as well
Tim grew up in Perth , Western Australia. Middle class, son of a surgeon, private school educated. Brilliant musician and songwriter. In his song Rock and Roll Nerd he sings about not having enough tragedy in his life to draw on to be a rock and roll singer. Check it out- it’s clever and hilarious .
One way I found learning more about Tim was watching his interviews on RUclips.
Your smile says everything about this performance.
P.S. Hello to all Tim's fans - there are many of us 🙂
Tim Minchin is an Australian Comedian/Artist. He played a washed up artist in Californication season 5, but in his breakdown he is referencing the impressionist Mussorgshi and "Night on Bald Mountain" then transfers to Beethoven.
Like everyone else has said - do more Tim!!
One that I like very much is Tim's beat poem Storm. He doesn't play the piano there, but it is a really good beat poem. ☺️💜
There are an animated version of it too, but it's not as good as to see Tim's face.
Tim is the exact OPPOSITE of gospel and church background if you watch some of his other songs! 😂 He was born in England but raised in Perth, Western Australia where I’m from. He went to Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts WAAPA (Advanced Diploma of Contemporary Music) and University of Western Australia (Bachelor of Arts). He wrote Matilda the Musical stage show and the music for the most recent Matilda movie and also wrote Groundhog Day the musical. He doesn’t believe in God (watch Thankyou God). He is very smart and very brilliant!! Enjoy this rabbit hole!
His piano skills are on show in "White Wine in the Sun"
My favourite moment was when he was doing Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam (who DID appeal to the teenage market) with their song "Jeremy". Tim throws in the "Jeremy has spoken" to ensure that anyone who has heard that song gets it. It's possibly the darkest song I ever heard. Certainly one of the most disturbing; especially after reading the inspiration for it.
Lol. I've been wearing my "I can have a dark side too" t-shirt the whole day, and when I get home I find this...
Jeremy's spoken refers to "Jeremy", a song by Pearl Jam. He's also making fun of the lead singer of that band.
Haha! Someone doesn't know their Pearl Jam. "Jeremy spoke in..."
He had piano lessons for about 3 years I think and then gave it up and self taught himself, he was born in England to Australian parents and moved back to Australia when he was younger maybe in his teens or even before, this is a semi autobiographical song about how he went to Sony to release a song and they turned him down in favour of bands like pearl jam hence the Jeremy's spoken reference, he has had a great upbringing with a loving family and been with his wife since a young age, they were childhood sweethearts, so he has never had that so called dark side to him that's why all he could think of for the song was daddy never came to my ball games lol, check out "rock and roll nerd" that song gives a little background to this song, you should also check out "f-sharp" think you would appreciate that one, and also "storm" but one of my favourite songs of his and one of his best imo is "thank you God", such a brilliant song and him with the orchestra is amazing, really hope you go down the Tim Minchin rabbit hole so many great songs by a super intelligent person. Great reaction btw it's great to see someone with a musical background check Tim out, take care, all the best.
The 1st time I saw him was on one of those comedy gigs for new comers. He sang Canvas Bags which was a song dedicated to urging the public to use less plastic. It was a heavily ironic song and it was clear this guy had legs. No … it wasn’t ironic - man I can’t think now how to call it. As for background, I’m happy to be corrected but I don’t think he has been formally trained in music but we all know for sure that he does not have a gospel background - just upper middle class privately educated son of atheist professionals. But Minchin is a sponge, so nothing is off his limits. The best intro to him is Rock’n Roll Nerd. I believe him when he said he’d always wanted to do musicals and comedy was the first step …. and he did succeed at that with Matilda.
I loved your reaction, you and him go good.
I just want to add that there’s a couple of songs that no one ever reacts to - one of them I’m struggling to remember but the other one is a song about cheese and I hope it is called cheese.
@@kathyconway5327lol, yes, it's called Cheese. Do you remember what's the other song about or anything about the performance?
Tim is the best! 💜
The pope song is definitely worth seeing! No matter your stance on religion, you will 100% agree with him!
Lol! Gospel! Have a listen to his Pope Song! Tim is awesome!
You can always tell the age of the reactor by if they're confused or laugh at the "Jeremy spoke in" part. 😅
Great Reaction!
talking about vocals and pulling faces while singing... you should check out Nina Hagen and her song Naturträne. Especially the Rockpalast version. Some say she is the Grandmother of Punk
Tim is a good friend of the Pope.
Tim's an theist. Self taught musician. Improvises most of his accompaniments. Can't read music. Wrote music and lyrics for world wide success "Matilda The Musical".
I watch this frequently just to see the look on the host's face. My other fave is Prejudice, a tune seething with subtext. There are a multitude of rabbits down this hole. Thank you God, and the Pope Song are wonderful for distinct reasons, as well as Not Perfect, a hymn for people who don't like hymns.
'rock and roll nerd' is a good song for music nerds
Never expected a comedy piano until l heard him. Even Bill Bailey doesn't reach this level
He is a atheist
He did play Judas I believe
He is a GENIUS
I think his father is alive and is a surgeon. He is self taught and lived his life in Perth, Western Australia. He has been in musicals playing Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and TV and movies - the most recent was an outback telemovie on DVD called Upright. Wait until you hear Lullaby and Prejudice and Thankyou God and his 3 minute song which he did on Conan and on British TV as well. He works it right to the second. He is married with two kids and I believe he is a natural redhead and his hair was curly. I think he wanted to change that nerdy image by straightening his hair and messing it up and putting on eye makeup so he had a unique image. Why he likes to play without shoes, who knows. He composes musicals but doesn't read a note and has to play the music to a friend composer who translates what he plays to the different sections of the orchestras he uses. Yep, he is a genius at songwriting and playing the piano.
I would love to see you react to Tim's song "F-sharp"
To understand the 5th level of humour in that song you need to listen to Pearl Jams song "Jeremy". Pearly Jam made it big off the back of that pain and grunge sound. Tim was saying he could have a dark side like Pearl Jam if that is what people wanted. This was a very early song and his talent was only just being appreciated when he wrote it. I am so jealous of anyone who has yet to travel through the world of Tim Minchin.
omg please do F sharp by Tim as well
I was hoping you would have recognized his dead-on impersonation of Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, a notoriously angsty singer of the 90s (you may have, but just didn't say so?).
tim is self taught
Oh you're in for a great time if continue the Tim discovery tour.
But do be aware he is Australian with the irreverence, sarcasm, piss taking that we hold so dear.
He wrote the musicals Matilda, Groundhog day, starred in Jesus christ superstar. Wrote and starred in a TV sit com
Bo Burnham, states Tim is a major influence.
👍
Please listen to his song Inflatable you 😂
contrary to everything you'll hear, tim is not from australia. he was born in england. his family moved to australia and he was brought up there, in WA, Perth. then he moved back to england. then he decided it was so fucked up in england that he moved back to australia. seems reasonable.
in this he seems to be taking the piss out of Pearl jam - Jeremy. if you listen to that song you will see how.
and in bare feet again
If by "gospel" you mean songs about the Pope...then yeah, he does "gospel" music
Welcome to the rabbit hole full of crack that is Tim. Once you had a taste, you keep digging.
Haha, yeah, he had no start at the church, look into him a realise why that was a funny comment
