I doubt they would attempt to do this live but I think the only actually sound effect is the breaking glass and everything else is voice, even the train whistle sound. Love these guys! Be on the lookout for part 2 of this classical series coming soon! ❤

Eli's range is almost as wide as Geoff's, over 4 octaves, just in the other direction. I think his lowest note is an A1. They performed live extensively pre-Covid. When the world shut down, they concentrated even more on their studio work.
Every sound you hear is made by the members, sometimes electronically enhanced. They frequently layer the voices of the members to add depth. Layne is insane, as evidenced by this arrangement. He records multiple tracks for the beat boxing.
They recorded a great version of We Don't Talk About Bruno. It was so impressive that Disney hired them to perform it live at a private corporate event. They had to rework the arrangement to be able to do it live and succeeded masterfully. There is a very poor quality recording (from the audience on an I-phone) of that performance. They allowed patrons to see part of one of their rehearsals for it.
Layne, Geoff, and Eli are married with kids. They do not plan to hit the road again. They have done a few private gigs and performed with Chicago last November.
Their next drop will be in a week or so - you will DEFINETLY want to see it!!!

Great reaction! This is one of my favorite pieces that VoicePlay has done (although that is, admittedly, a pretty long list. So many of their songs are my favorites!) Much like the instruments in certain orchestral pieces assume the 'voices' of different characters (Peter and the Wolf being the most blatant example), I love how the guys incorporate their character voices throughout the piece in much the same way. And you can tell so much about each character through their vocal tone; it's absolutely brilliant!!
And beyond that, all I'm going to say is that VoicePlay is very close to dropping their next video, and it is very, very much in your interests to look into it when it does.

You should know that VoicePlay videos are prerecorded, and they either mime or sing along to the track. You need to know more about how these guys make their videos. One of them, usually Layne or Geoff, sometimes Eli, will come up with the idea, The musical parts are then shared with the other members who record their own parts. Those are send back to the arranger, who edits them all together. He will then create the arrangement and create the background and sorts out costumes. Eli is in charge of lighting. Then the arranger oversees the filming, and edits all the parts together. together with the sound. When it's all done it's sent off to a professional for the final mix. This all takes time of course. This one was Layne's arrangement but the swing section was Geoff's idea. By the way all the guys have amazing ranges, Geoff's is the lowest. Cesar and Eli can achieve some very high. I don't know whether they could do this live, most of it probably But the makeup alone takes some hours. Check out the credits for who does what in any video of theirs.

He said he assumes they pre record but I think I understood what he meant about the prosthetics. Even when just lip syncing it can be hard to move all of your facial muscles like you normally would and to move your mouth properly. I noticed in the new one now on Patreon that Rachel barely looks like she’s moving her mouth most of the time and I think it’s because of the prosthetics they put on her mouth. 😅

Great analysis, thank you. This is absolutely one of my favorites. Your comment about Eli and character voices was spot on - he is a voice actor as well. Hope you listened to the outro with the merch pitch - both of the cartoon voices were Layne. (Layne's arrangement as well.) Coincidentally, I'm wearing my Mountain Queen t-shirt from them right now - which I rarely do. (I'm not a big consumer of merch, but I bought it at the same time I got the "must have" VioLayne" t-shirt.) I always laugh when I put it on, remembering Layne's cartoon voice reprimanding the 'other' voice, "Don't EAT the merchandise!" Their madcap humor is such a breath of fresh air!

Names from left: Geoff in blue makeup, Eli is that green goblin, then Elizabeth obviously, next Cesar in red makeup and lastly Layne with orange hair and beard. Note that Layne has the least prosthetics on. Back when they did “This Is Halloween” he had a nose prosthetic and found it very difficult to even do the facial motions needed for beatboxing. They do prerecord, but they also sing their parts while filming. They just don’t use the audio done while filming. They are however singing along with the mixed audio at that time.

They just released their new video last week on their Patreon. It will probably be released on RUclips this Friday.
It is the sequel to this one. Same characters. But Rachel Potter instead of Elizabeth Garozzo.
It is absolutely amazing and fun.

There’s just no way they could perform this live with costumes unless it was the only song they did, and yeah, they’d have to alter the prosthetics to sing it live. Generally they all record their parts in studio (I believe each member does their own bit in their home studio but I could be wrong), then get together on set and in costume and sing/lip sync along with the recording for the video. That way they have good sound quality and can focus on the visuals separately.
Obviously COVID and the resulting shutdowns did tremendous harm to a lot of families in this country, and it even brought tragedy to Voiceplay, in that they lost a valued member of their team during that awful time (see the memorial statements at the end of Halo Theme). But if not for the shutdown, I doubt I’d have ever heard of these guys, and they’ve brought a lot of smiles to my face over some really difficult years. I love that they didn’t just give up when their livelihood was pretty much curtailed-instead they chose to shift focus over to videos and that they have produced so many of such incredible quality.
This is one of the occasional Voiceplay videos where it pays to keep watching even after the patreons roll-there’s a really amusing voiceover at the end promoting the group’s merchandise.
Great reaction-always fun to hear what a person with a musical background has to say.

One of my favorites from Voiceplay. Hearing "Hall Of The Mountain King" always reminds me of the time the brass band I'm in had the magnificent Doug Yeo of the Boston Symphony join us doing a solo jazz version of the Grieg.

I'm pretty sure Layne can do the burp live. It is possible to burp on command (I know because I can do it!) The technique's a bit hard to describe; you kind of pull your neck/throat up and back with your chin tilting down and 'suck' your breath from your stomach up into your chest, and then push it all out as a burp. (Also helps if you drink some water/cold fluid beforehand.)

Like virtually any group (whether a cappella or "normal") does while performing in a "music video", VoicePlay's audio is recorded in the studio and they are lip-synching to the recording. So no makeup was involved while the recording was being done - unless someone decided to do it on their own, which I wouldn't put past some of them!
Geoff Castellucci has a video on his solo channel where he describes the process he goes through when arranging a song for the group. In VP's case, whoever arranges the song has overall creative control for the music video as well. This masterpiece came out of the warped mind of Layne Stein (the guy in green!) - all hail the Carrot Lord!
As far as performing live - since the pandemic shut down everything, VoicePlay hasn't done much in the way of live performances. They've concentrated much more on putting out material for their RUclips channel - they try to put out something every month for their Patrons. Plus, everyone is a little older, and family time is very important to Layne, Geoff, and Eli, who all have young children now. So I don't believe that they've ever tried to perform this live (someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that).

When COVID hit, VoicePlay compensated for the lack of live performance opportunities by cranking up their RUclips efforts. With the pandemic over, they don't seem to be in a big hurry to go back to doing a lot of live performances. They did do a live version of Bruno, related to some kind of Disney thing, but that was probably in Orlando, since Disney is headquartered there. If they have done any real touring since 2020, I'm not aware of it.

They always lip sync for the videos. Rick Underwood and his crew did their makeup magic. Layne sent him pictures of how he wanted everyone to look. They don't tour anymore. Their content schedules don't allow the time.
