      mross58 I’m an owner of a 4th Gen and love it. Have the Sport Model. But every owner knows the 3rds are bullet proof if taken care of. The reason many don’t get them is , the 4th is more stable and obviously has more power and maybe a little more mpg, but not by much there. For me, I got this 06 2 years ago with only 62,800 miles on it, almost 81,000 now. That was my selling point.

    I have a 2003 and honestly i think upgrading the tires and suspension is the best thing to do. There is an eibach rear coil that is amazing for the price and pair it with a bilstien 5300 series that work phenomenally (about a 1.5” lift, and I went with King Coilovers up front but there are much cheaper options that will do the job (eibach makes a matched set, bothe provide a variable lift but around 2” to 2.25” is the way to go) And i was a BFG all terrain guy for at least 15 years but a few years ago i tried the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrack’s (same as in the video) and they are better in snow/mud and just as on road worthy as the BFG. I think the SPC upper arm for suspension really compliments the suspension and has a ton of adjustment for alignment. The SPC arm i can be grased and i quite and reliable, and most alignment shops are familiar with it. If you do this it will transform your 4th gen into a vehicle you love. I ended up doing a rear diff with an Auburn locker and some fog light upgrades from Baja Designs. But other than that it is all about maintenance! 265,000 miles of perfect performance for my 4runner and I have no reason to look for a newer model and it has served me on countless winter roads, camp sites, dirt roads, fishing trips, exploration trips, and commuting. I couldn’t be happier with the 4.0 V6 that never quits!

      Biggest open question is whether I should seek out a model with the rear air suspension or not. Originally was leaning towards it but some more research seems to point against it due to sensor failure and subsequent replacement costs.

    Good suggestions. I have the same vehicle you have (if that is an 06').
    The suspension 100% upgrade it. I went with Bilsteins but I have to admit, it's decent but it's a bouncing ride. If you go over speed bumps with bilsteins you still have to slow down because of how stiff they are. You can hit the speed bump hard but your ass will fly up and you end up looking like you're the hardy boys. Not something my wife enjoys so I have to slow down with those bilsteins still. The good thing about the bilstein 5100s is they do handle great. No nose dive when hard stopping. The actual shock absorption could be better.
    So if you're here and thinking about getting the Bilstein 5100's, I'd say do with this leaf did and go higher end. Spend 2 grand if you can afford it. You're going to LOVE that ride. I am planning on upgrading the bilstein 5100's I bought next year. Might* go with new tires and rims in 2 years.
    I also bought those Dough Thorley headers (they're not installed yet) but I will swap them when I change out the exhaust system at the same time. My exhaust pipes look like they could crack anytime now. Anyway. GOOD SUGGESTIONS!

      My Fox 2.0 setup is a bit firmer than stock - I'd say it corners better but also swallows harsh impacts much smoother if that makes any sense. Overall it rides nicer on road

  • @johnshipps441
    @johnshipps441 4 года назад +1

    Great video as always! Are you still running the stock upper control arms or did you have to change them out with the lift? Also, with the tires, did you have to do any cutting to get them to fit?

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  4 года назад +2

      I've been running stock UCAs since I'm under 3" of lift but I think my ball joints are about to crap the bed. Likely going to upgrade them and raise the ride height a bit while everything is apart. I had to do some trimming to the bumper, push the fender liners forward and remove the mud flaps for the tires

    • @johnshipps441
      @johnshipps441 4 года назад

      I must’ve added more than 3” to mine because the steering got more “mushy” and wants to drift at freeway speeds. I still have my stock UCAs and that’s what I heard could happen at 3 or more inches of lift without changing the UCAs. Also, the lift tore one of my CV axle boots so I had to replace it. I haven’t added off-road tires yet cuz the ones I had still had tons of tread left, but I’ll upgrade them when it makes sense. I’d just like to not have to do any cutting if possible. Maybe go a size smaller than yours?

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  4 года назад +1

      Definitely stay away from 285s if you don't want to trim. UCAs should fix your alignment problem by the sounds of it

    I know y'all love to take off the mudflaps to fit the 285s but the amount of crud that packs in is astounding. It will enhance the already advanced rust I see peeking out from under that pretty-clean-on-top 4th gen. First mod should have been a gal. of Fluid Film and a gun to shoot the bottom with, especially inside the frame. Stupid rusty toyota frames.

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  4 года назад

      Oil spraying is already done - I even have a video on it. As for the mud flaps, if you look close you'll see that I trimmed the rears so the inner portion is still providing full protection. This amount of rust is pretty normal for an Ontario vehicle

    Base SR5 V6s (no Sport or Limited trims) are the cheapest, least complicated 4th gens. Nomatter, Toyota stanced 4th gens in the weeds for some reason. A really cheap and easy upgrade is Toytec 1/4" spacers in front (1/2" net lift) and OME yellow 10mm (3/8" lift) trim donuts in the rear. Zero compromises and just a touch of lift while keeping the factory rake for hauling/towing stuff.

    Heya. I have a 2006 Toyota 4runner with 275k miles on the chassis and frame, and 171k on the engine, transmission, and drivetrain (2007 parts). My engine has the check engine light, VSC Off, VSC TRAC, and traction control light lit up like a Christmas tree on my dash. Also, at very low speeds and at low throttle, this sound from exhaust (I don't know if my cats are shot) is like a high-pitched rattling sound, NOT like a rock bouncing around on youtube videos you'd look up online about shot cats. My O2 sensors are all new and have been replaced WITH spacers on them. I took my car to the local automotive shop, they said to fix this they would need to mess with the exhaust, put new O2 sensors on and take the spacers off, then diagnose from there to see what's wrong. It's going to be expensive from them... I also am wanting to do this myself... I have a mechanic friend that told me that my cats need to be replaced but I'm not so sure it's the problem just yet... Any suggestions? (reposting this on another video to see if there's any other comments... help)

    • @CanadianGearhead
