The Skydio 2 has been creating a buzz in the drone world for a few months now with its advanced camera sensors that help it avoid obstacles and track subjects with incredible accuracy. But what about the autonomous return to home function? Can it land precisely from where it took off on any given flight? What factors help and what factors hinder? In this video we test the Skydio 2's ability to automatically "return to home" after a flight of a certain height and distance. And to keep things interesting, we drew an outline around the drone to see exactly how close it lands each time. And we did the same test with the Mavic Air 2 for good measure.
The overall results were interesting and we definitely made some observations about both drones that were unexpected.

For precision landing to work with the Mavic Air 2, the aircraft must ascend vertically 7m (23 feet) before moving horizontally. This is covered in the user manual, page 15. Also, the home point terrain features must remain largely unchanged. Give it a try, you'll see it lands right on the home point!
Yeah this, frustrating video...
Exactly! You have to know how the drone is supposed to work before doing this type of test.
He went higher than 23 ft and then hovered for 10 seconds that is plenty..
You don't have to stop 23 ft straight up.
You have to ascend at a minimum of 23 ft straight up for it to work properly and he did that..
In other words if you go up 10 ft and take off to the left or right it's not going to work that well you have to at least make 23 ft
So your point is negligible
Both drones saw the drawing as obstacles. The DJI gave at least a warning. Repeat it with a landing pad. You will get different results.
I agree. Both drones see the white board as an obstacle. I believe that is why the Skydio 2 landed 8 to 10 feet away. And, with the Mavic Air 2 it gave a warning.
It'd be a good idea to repeat the process now using the Skydio 2 case as a landing pad...
Excellent testing Kelly!!
I needed to rewatch! Company kept stopping by! 😁 great job bud!
Maybe the quality of your drone picture was so good it didn't want to land on another drone 🤣🤣
I like when the mavic air 2 gives a warning to get permission to land when it doesn't know what it's under it due to the huge amount of reflection.
Legendary drawing!!!👌
You're such an artist.
For the Air 2 you did it wrong. First of all you need to stay 25ft just right up from the take off point and you need to have an original take off point from the beginning to the end becase it cmpares the take off point to a photo taken from the sensors. And you dont use reflecting colour or material. Thats how precision land works. If you do that you will see that is much more accurate. I did it for more than 100 times and i get zero ft away from homepoint
I know it's kinda randomly asking but do anyone know of a good site to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Jefferson Lyle I use Flixzone. You can find it by googling =)
@Lennox Zayn Definitely, have been using flixzone for years myself =)
@Lennox Zayn Thanks, I went there and it seems to work =) I appreciate it !!
@Jefferson Lyle happy to help :D
I love my mavic air 2, it’s the best ❤️
Same here. Just got it 2 weeks ago!
Good to know about the reflectivity issue.
I’m happy with my purchase even more so after watching this video, expecting it to be delivered on Thursday. Can’t wait! Thanks for the video
Me too... Mine should be coming this Saturday... Cant wait.
Which drone are referring too?
Ken I have to say I love your videos. I like how you throw out little tips and tricks for the viewer too. And you aren't biased you tell the truth and get to the point.
I'd like to see you review an Autel Evo 2. Have you flown that before? I just got one about 3 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. Happy flying
Came on bro, don’t you see the landing board is too bright and reflective for either of the drones to want to land.
Exactly thats why the landing platform is a orange color not as reflective.
@@mikerenda3132 exactly lol
GREAT VIDEO
You definitely should invest in a landing pad. Not only will it make the landings more precise, but it will also stop the drone from throwing up and sand/grass/dirt unto itself like the propellers will.
Cool test... I need to get my skydio out more.. Stay cool man
Kelly, every newer DJI drone has a take-off altitude you must hover and hold for the drone to precisely calibrate RTH. I believe that the Mavic Pro 2 is at 33' as most of the Mavic Pro series. I assume that the Mavic Air 2 has a similar minimal setting as well for precision RTH calibration. Sure glad I canceled my Skydio 2 order as it would not have fit my needs.
Brilliant... Definitely the Air Pro 2 for me after being saving for months 👍
How about a landing pad? Link below in the description.
That's a cool video 👍😉 I had my Bug's 4w 4k out before and I have made a 15" Sq out of cardboard and it always lands with in 2 feet or closer to my home made landing pad. Great Job 👍😉
Great stuff Kelly, I love having the Mavic Air 2. I’m thinking I should of got the skydio 2, the reason is for the tracking. But I am going to see if the Air 2 will do some tracking and see if it will work good for what I’m going to do on my channel. Thanks for sharing the video and hope you guys have a great rest of the weekend. Cheers and God bless ya my friend.
Oh and stop feeding Tate, that youngster is growing up to fast . Lol 😁 he looks 6’ tall on camera. Take care
My MAVIC air 2 it will be at door anytime. Good job 👍
never ever a mention of the fimi x8 in your reviews? can do everything as those for half the price and land more precise?
I like to use my landing pad, with the orange background and the white H. It seems to always land on the pad, usually within a foot of its' original takeoff position for my MA2 :)
At 16:38 (& before too but I didn't rewind to get the time code) you have the little tripod on the poster board while the Mavic is up trying to take it's photo of the landing zone (it uses both GPS coordinates and a memory map of the takeoff spot to do precision landings). Can't tell if you took it up high enough per the manual to establish its position for precision landing. It must go to 7m vertically before moving horizontally or all it will have are the GPS coordinates to RTH. When you returned it looked like sometimes the little tripod was there & sometimes not. Really messy test.
Don't know if your Skydio test was as flawed. Perhaps a repeat is in order after checking the manuals for how to insure precision returns.
Nice job Kelly, boy you have some high winds I’m not to sure about the Skydio 2 on RTH I’ve haven’t seen to many or at all RTH Tests with the Skydio. I would like to see what Skydio has to say about the landing I believe they are watching all the reviews and may be some help with this problem Kelly
You should use green poster board.
Did you do a coppice calibration before this. I love my mavick many. I always do a compass calibration and it always within a foot or 2 at the most
Nice review Kelly. I have considered getting one of the those drones. Mavic air 2 did a better job of landing from take off point. Thanks for sharing and God bless.
Hey Boss. Thanks for taking the time to put up this video. Interesting. By way of observation, (not criticism), I believe the landing surface you chose was not the best one. The traditional orange/blue H pad would likely work better. Also, with regard to the Mavic Air 2, (I'm not familiar with the Skydio 2), DJI recommends that you ascend vertically for 23 feet before any horizontal movement. I believe the reason for this is that the drone records the physical attributes of the "home point" so that when it returns to home it can attempt to precisely match up the LZ. Just a thought on my part. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for all of your efforts.
I was wondering if the reflection off the white cardboard had any affect. I've only used the standard round orange/blue landing pad. Never noticed any difference between those two colors though.
Maybe with the Mavic air 2 it sees the outline of the drone. If you had put an x the outcome may have been different.
Just a thought….Does the earth rotation play even a little part in the RTH feature ?? Expecting a pin point landing seems impossible with both the earth & GPS satellites all moving.
Have both Skyd2 and M2Zoom. I found landing accuracy is great for both of them. One observation, Skydio has no settings for return height. If you are say 30 feet in air and RTH SKYDIO makes a direct beeline to home navigating closely around objects like a fighter jet. And at a fast speed. It’s WILD to witness.
I am getting the Mavic air 2 Thursday. I have the mavic air and the landing is with in inches 9 out of ten times if is not real windy.I point the camera straight down taking off and landing and the x will correct as it comes down to landing pad. The only thing I do not like is the wifi.
Bro XK X1 and SG906 pro which is better
Hi Kelly, Happy holiday. Disappointed in accuracy of Skydio 2 for precise landing and it's RC controller with Wifi. The opaqueness or lack of contrast information on the whiteboard does not give enough information for MA2 to land and like you said may look like water or a reflective surface with no detail. I am impressed with MA2 and for many weeks months now still waiting for my Batch # 3 Skydio 2 order with no production now because of COVID-19. On my DJI drones I have "Precision Auto Take-Off" option on Go 4 App. does the MA2 not have that feature?
No the MA2 does not have the precision takeoff feature.
Seems to look like it thinks there is a drone on the ground where you've drawn the outline and won't land on top of it.
No surprise here, the Skydio 2 doesn't have precision landing features, it comes back to you in the general area. But under the right conditions, the Mavic Air 2 can land in the middle of the pad on most attempts. Great testing Kelly, and their both great drones.
I wish the mavics had a force land button
The Skydio 2 has very good collision avoidance technology. For the drone to land very close to obstacles this would need to be turned off. With the latest software update, you can overcome this just by setting it to case landing and using the graphic. It will land directly on the case (or a matching graphic) pretty much every time. It automatically turns off collision avoidance while performing the landing to do this.
I keep hearing comments from flyers comparing the DJI to the Skydio about Skydio's non-precise or delayed flying controls.
This is to be expected with all the sensors doing their job. DJI drone is made to be flown. Skydio is made to fly itself. So when you attempt to fly it the sensors take an extra second to figure out if it's OK to move in that direction. It is constantly second guessing your command to move.
On the flip side, watch how quick Skydio moves around things to track someone vs the DJI.
ready set crash! do you have any crash footage on these two drones? which broke and which flew to crash another day? Thanks for the information.
Just use a landing pad.
love it
Hmm... my ma2 lands within 4" of the take off point consistantly. I would still be happy if it was 20' as long as you can see it, you're good!
I us a landing pad and point camera straight down on take off with the x hairs and down on landing and it is spot on every time. Try this and see if it works for you . My mavic air works the same.
use the orange landing pad
The first warning from the DJI should inform you that the landing pad was the issue. You should get a proper landing pad and try again.
The surface is too bright. I never had any problems landing my MA2. Always lands in same spot that took off.
Skydio was scerred of that pic you drawed lol
My skydio does not keep going up or forward when you let go of the sticks. Interesting.
Just did some skydio vs air tracking snowboarders in trees today. One smoked the other.
The controls are definitely laggy. Surprised after all this time it still doesn't have precision landing.
Hi Sean, let me guess since you did not tell the whole story....... It must have been the Skydio 2 that smoked the MA2 for tracking? Hope all is welll, I am playing catchup on your videos. You have been busy.... I am finally getting some time to get some editing done....
@@AddyOverbeeke addy, that's awesome. I am glad to hear that you are getting some editing going. Yeah, during the rona I had some time to kill so have been making a bunch of new stuff.
@@bradleyfrank7933 leggy isn't how I'd put it. Mine is sorta floaty. As in the sensors being active give it sorta an air cushion around it. When you learn its feeling and how it flys then its no different than flying anything else. Just takes times becoming familiar with it.
Well in spite of the results I enjoyed this video. Try using an orange landing pad. But what do I know, I’m just a Vlogger lol. Thanks again Kelly. Have a safe Independence Day.
I haven't thought either but that Maverick are two cost $1,000 for the fly more combo and it comes with three batteries a charger so you can charge 3 batteries at the same time, 3 camera lenses extra propellers and a letter Strap Bag. With skydio for the same $1,000 you don't even get a remote control.
On first attempt Air 2 possibly thought that THE MASSIVE TRIPOD u originally had positioned on the mat but then was mysteriously cut from the shot may have Has something to do with it. However failure on both may indicate aircraft identifying white square as snow after all u r not using a conventional landing pad Which the drone may be programmed to recognise
why didnt you use a proper landing pad? or do it over concrete? a flimsy cardboard box opened up that's moving with the wind is probably the reason why the MA2 didn't want to land on it
you should try to land the skydio also on the ground and not only on the paper.
I would like to have seen you retry the Skydio without the bright white cardboard. Maybe it didn’t like it but the software is not programmed to tell you.
How about drawing a simple X or H, like real landing pads..... and not a picture of another drone. No wonder the DJI thought it was an unsafe area. It's not the big white, or "water". Mine lands inside the 2 foot circle all the time.
I have the mavic air 2 and obviously dji's King at returning to home.
BUT WHY DOES THIS MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT ALL!!
I mean the whole point of returning to home is to get the Drone back to you when you lose signal and something goes wrong.
Once the Drone is within your eyesight or close to you I always take manual control and land it myself exactly where I want to land it mostly in my hand..
So the accurate return to home while it's cool it doesn't really matter..
Nevertheless it's still an interesting video to watch.
;)
Respectfully - I have my doubts on the validity of this test at least for the Mavic (I'm not as familiar with the Skydio). The Mavic needs to climb to 7m and record its home point for the most accurate landing performance. Also the white posterboad is not an ideal landing point as it is pretty reflective.
Man you s a real sketch artist Kelly 🤓 just messing with ya lol
Should have used Brown cardboard instead. The minute you started I was expecting the bright white was going to clause a problem. 🤔
I dont have none of this drones but for all the videos I have seen they are great drones each one have they on characteristics one is better in precision landing the other is better in the tracking mode for example
Maybe it thinks you're writing on the board is an actual object!
Also that maybe why the skydio didn't land there either.
The way that the mavic Air 2 deals with objects is it stops so you can take control because you're right there. but the skydio may just land in a different spot..
You would have to do this again maybe using a pencil in a different color board..
The Skydio 2 doesn't want to stay in the near of an DJI product. That's the reason why it lands 10 ft. away! :D
I remember my "MJX Bugs 3 Pro", it lands like 98 to 99% precised all the time. Way better than the Skydio or even better than Spark.
Return to home in a boat is completely useless especially if it comes back to you and you can actually see your drone because the boat never stays in place it'll never land in the same place where it took off from.
If you're doing return to home from a boat it should always be returned to the controller if it has that function so it tries to come home to where you are.
But even if your boat doesn't move in your anchored it's still not going to come close to staying in the same place.
You're always going to want to try to handcatch your drone from a boat the best you can, and definitely once you get sight of it you're going to manually bring it in and never never never let it land on its own...
The skydio 2 will now also and on the case if its sees it on the landing
LANDING PAD!
Mavic can land in the same spot
I know the surface is too bright, but at least the Mavic Air 2 allowes you to land it even if it thinks the surface isn't suitable for landing.Whereas the Skydio does it's own thing.
The only thing Skydio does better is tracking, that is what it is designed for. It get beat by MA2 in almost all other areas.
gary luo uh oh we have a skydio hater
gary luo lover*
Skydio does everything better than Mavic. Except for flying far away (illegal) and fly at night (illegal). Precision landing is irrelevant to me. I always hand-land them.
Yes, skydio2 is designed for shooting people in motion, and MA2 is more for shooting sceneries. Of course, for ordinary users, MA2 tracking is enough.
@@jutea9858, that was the Skydio R1. Not this one.
That was just crazy the SKYDIO is phenomenal because it has so many cameras for obstacle avoidance and knowing where it is but it can't land in the same spot that it took off from!!
😂
WTF
You can't compare these two as they are designed for different applications. If you want to track yourself doing action stuff the skydio is the one to buy, you want scenic shots mavic is your drone.
You are correct.
I hand-catch my drone all the time. Landing accuracy is not really important to me.
Never use white board 4 takeoff...use colored boards....n take away the pens wen it returns to home
Overall DJI is just better plain and simple.
Watch captain drone vid about landing lol😎👍
Skydio 2 - grass-cutter 2 :) air2 - WIN! :)
love the channel but it wasn’t a fair test if u do a test objects should be there or not you did test with objects in place and not in place on other test ?? Confused dot com
im so disappointed in the skydio 2. i returned it within a week. its not ready for prime time.
Why you didn't do the pen tricks to skydio....so your conclusion was wrong...
Poor choice of landing target materil. do it again with a real landing pad
The landing point is inaccurate, may be you should stand away from the land point
This doesnt seem like a useful test.
These are very unscientific methods lol
I learned that mavic pro won't land if it thinks there is a paper on the ground lmao 😂
Paper isn't reflective it's not water just outdated
Wow oh wow! There is sooo much wrong with this video.
How bored are you! Using a super reflective surface to try land on is never going to work!
Cameraman is borred as hell, he shake that camera i got sea disease watching this... Tripod would do a better job...
badly executed experiment. don't use bright white reflective cardboard and don't alter the environment after take off. Precision landing requires the environment below it not be altered.
You should do your return to home tests with you standing much further away. I see too often where the person is right next to take off, but then walks away during flight. This will make the landing zone look different to the drone when its coming home then what it looked like at take off. by standing far away, you could eliminate another variable.
I love my mavic air 2, it's the best ❤️
