We test and compare the new DJI Mavic Air 2 and Skydio 2 drones, both of which make use of impressive technology for obstacle avoidance and automated subject tracking. Here's the state of consumer drones in 2020 and what tech is meaningful for drone pilots who want to film aerial video, shoot photos, and fly safely with confidence.

RIP Adam's face. That one- wheel bites hard.
that board has limits and if you know them it'll just keep going
@@onewheeldrone He hit thick mud. Board stopped, he didn't. Wasn't a speed issue.
The footage of the Mavic Air 2 seems a bit off in stabilisation and struggling in frame rate in this video. Did something go wrong during recording or in edit? For instance: 01:50 and 08:58?
it's also super fuzzy compared to the Skydio. I wonder if it's just a bad unit.
@@BadDFWDrivers or maybe poorly rendered... I experience much better footage with my Mavic Air 2!
I noticed a couple of shots where it looked like it wobbled a little bit, I thought maybe there were small gusts of wind that wobbled the camera gimbal.
I noticed that as well, the gimbal seems to be doing micro adjustments. My Mavic Mini does something similar in sport, where the gimbal will jerk, but not nearly as frequent as this, typically on a quick stop or turn. Also, the footage does look like the lens is out of whack or not clean. A portion of the frame is fuzzy.
Probably has scuffed blades. Most people have no idea about how important that your propellers don't have any chips or rough edges. It can easily make the footage jittery and or blurry.
Great video. I'll keep waiting patiently for my Skydio2 pre-order to be fulfilled!
I’ve been waiting since January. I am group 4. Next month!!!!
@@MrTriscb82 I'm also group 4. Not holding my breath. I'll go with cautiously optimistic ;)
Mavic Air 2 is my first drone, I thought about the Skydio 2 as well but since its back ordered for a while that settled everything anyways. I got the Air 2 because I wanted something more interactive and fun to fly, and not something I could set and forget like the Skydio 2. Plus I'm not into a bunch of action sports where I would want a Skydio chasing me around for some great videos. I have my pilot's license, so I think that added to the idea of something fun to fly even if it's not high performance FPV type flying.
Yep, I buy my drones to fly it, not it to fly itself. I know there is a market for it but for me I never use the follow me mode.
@@voongnz I too buy it to fly it, not pay a deposit and then get an occasional update that I might get it sometime 10 months later.
I buy it to have it track me sprinting, going on hikes, scootering up a mountain, doing gymnastics, etc.... I would much rather pay for a drone than for a film crew.
Would you recommend the dji spark too? Also could Adam do a video about him taking one apart to see what’s inside?😃
oof, that infamous one wheel nose dive...
18:09 Adam kisses the ground while his ass is up in the air. Priceless!
oof
This was incredibly helpful!! Great info and thank you!!!
Why showcase the drones' 4k60fps capabilities if you don't upload the video in either lol
youtube compresses the video
*I was fired from the keyboard factory today.*
I wasn't putting in enough shifts.
Skydio2 has no competition in avoiding obstacles. You can fly completely carefree into the middle of the forest. Full throttle forward. I admire this on Skydio 2. Skydio 2 also sees hair on the head ...
16:35 Skydio "just takes all the pain out of flying a drone, and all the worry." - I see this as a huge advantage. I can see you in that segment actually enjoying your hike while filming, instead of being totally engrossed in maneuvering the drone past trees and into the right angle for a good shot. Helpful, though very verbose, review.
Just got the Mavic Air 2 and have really enjoyed it so far. So much so that I’ve sold my Mavic Pro and am seriously contemplating selling my original Mavic Air...mainly because the Mavic Air 2 has been the best of both of those drones, and because I have a reservation for Skydio 2. I think they are both such great but different drones, having both will be great for different situations.
Video of both drones looks "mushy" or softened. Did you do something to it? Or something you did not do to it what other youtubers would normally do?
What was the building in the drone footage with the blue roof, looks really cool.
was wondering the same :-)
Frank Lloyd Wright's Marin County Civic Center.
Also love that a lot of the footage was filmed at the Oakland/Alameda County Regional Training Facility!!
It is the Marin County Civic Center located in San Rafael, Cal.
Attention level increased by 500% when they mention Adam crashed on his OneWheel.
Love this video, love the back and forth talk, very conversational, informative, and full of great every day use examples to compare these two drones! Thank you for taking the time to make this! 💜
Pre made units are seriously not worth the effort when the module world out there is in such a design boom right now, and it takes what, just a little bit of patience to learn to make an RC and to operate it. That and there's no issues with the manufacturers gauging your personal information against your will, as it's been found DJI does (ignore the sensationalist webarticles one side or the other, and just google the guys who put these machines to the test and found their traces, kinda like it was found with the Epic store launcher that stole information and data from one's computer, they're just not trustworthy).
Did anyone else see how choppy the background looks on the Skydio when revolving around someone?
Looks like a combination of very high shutter speed and the frame rate of the video. Using ND filters allows slower shutter speeds and therefore better motion blur, which makes that look much better.
Adam, Wear a helmet!!
he wore something even better. A fancy hat XD gotta look good for all occasions
Video was awesome 😎
what setting did you export this video? looks really fuzzy
Seems like something is wrong with your air2 gimbal. Its soooo shaky
Should have gone for a drive in the Landcruiser through the bush and had the drones follow it.
If it can't fly at night, and doesn't have full spherical OA day and night, it's still a child. DJI are good at releasing almost everything. Still no full spherical OA. Terrible.
I have built drones with gps and waypoint navigation features way before these hit the shops. Still have got one I built but spend more time adjusting and modifying it than flying it. I’m amazed how far the tech has come. Now I’m looking to purchase a ready to fly drone so I can enjoy it more. I’m more interested in waypoint features so I can navigate it out of the LOS into hard to reach remote areas for filming. Would the skydio be a better choice ? Or are there better drones for this purpose out there in the same price range ?
If you really need a drone for some reason now...
There is only one choice between the two. You would have to buy the Mavic Air 2.
Skydio 2 is not even available to buy and won't be for months. Unless you want to pay double to the ebay scalpers.
But what’s it payload capacity?
i just love your videos ,i am your biggest fan
but the most stupid is , skydio is never can mass produce now...you need to wait a whole year for per-order , and paid for the full price and then continue to wait forever.
I'm in the market for the Skydio 2. It's the footage they show at 4k settings or 720p?
What's up with the Mavic Air footage in the this video? it sucks! It's seriously jerky!
From the footage you posted, I'd take the Skydio 2 over the Air 2. This is from a former Mavic owner.
This footage is nowhere near what the Air 2 actually looks like. In real life the Air is much better quality than the Skydio
With the results of the patent lawsuit, getting any mavik may be hard soon since all the US based inventory is supposed to be leaving the country with the court decision. Not that getting it from non US source will be any harder.
The MA2 was not included in that lawsuit. I think DJI knew they were going to lose so they changed/modified the design of the MA2 so that it would not violate the patent lawsuit when released.
@@WildBillRidesAgain trick is, the patent is on essentially all quad copters. They essentially just went after dji for easy money on not licensing the term for sales of their drones.
@@MattWeber Yes I agree. But it's not over what with suits and countersuits and Appeals. Thing is these are China companies and one thing China doesn't like is bad publicity. If I was a betting man, I wouldn't be surprised, though we will never hear about it, the Chinese government will reach out to these boys and tell them to settle it because it would be in their best interest to do so. LOL.. Somebody gets a chunk of change and DJI and Autel Robotics come out and shake hands, smile for the cameras and it's business as usual. Then it will be how much these imported drones will cost. What with the US and China fighting over import tariffs and such. Wouldn't be surprised if Chinese stuff starts costing a lot more
Cinematic footage with Skydio2 can’t compete with the Mavic Air 2 because the Skydio has to stay too close to what it’s following.
the new firmware lets you adjust the distance.
So much jitter on the Mavic.
Now I don’t know if I should get a PS5 or a Skydio 2 haha
For the same price you get the Mavic air 2 fly more pack, just saying.
Yeah, but it doesnt track you as well. Or really that great at all.. if you'd like to do shots of you driving, or riding bike, or doing any kind of activity, the skydio is perfect for that situation. The mavic air 2 is more for photography, and cinematic look. It also has a super far range. These 2 drones are like comparing apples to oranges. Two totally different style drones. Ones like a go pro (skydio), the other is like a digital camera (Mavic air). Ones more for sports, while other is for professional photography. Which makes the decision between these two, so hard. Because the variety of shots you can get with either one are amazing, but neither of them do what the other one does. Or atleast they dont do what the other one does, as good as the other one does.
Why do they bother having anyone else on with Norm? He clearly already knows everything, the way he steers the conversation into little corners where his co-hosts are permitted to add rhetorical comments is almost as frustrating to watch as it must be to participate in.
18:09 oh damn, i hope he is alright

Adam was fine, no worries. He's generally a very good fall-er. (But we were freaking out when we were watching.)
@@tested I'm in my 40's now, and I KNOW I'd be hurting long after a fall like that. He's got "A couple" of years on me, and that really was a proper face plant head flip. He's lucky he didn't snap his neck........ OK, He had "A couple" lb's less body mass behind the impact than I would have had, But he still must have woke up hurting the next day. :(
Granted, I fully expect his eventual obituary to say that he died from doing something really obscurely weird, like he was testing a home made jet pack, or lost control of DIY rocket powered skis. But I don't want people to read it and say "Why the hell was he doing that?", I'd be much happier if what he was doing wasn't the main thing they took away from that story. I'd like that to be "Why the hell was such an INCREDIBLY OLD MAN still doing crazy sh*t like that?!?!?!?". :)
awesome
Hi from São Paulo, Brazil.
As a freeride skier, drones are too slow GOING DOWN which I find so strange. Very few reviewers test this. They usually don't have anything steep and just a long low hill.
Even if you just want to go straight down, no lateral movement _and_ at high altitude, where the lift effect is noticeable, they're too slow. There seem to be a minimum blade speed that it won't go below.
No foldable arms is a big issue for freeride as we already have issues with bag space due to all the avalanche safety equipment. incl. the airbag. I don't think that dimension will fit my bag. Volume probably does.
Then of course low flight time is even lower at altitude. If only the Mavic followed better and went downhill faster. Plus the Skydio 2 isn't available in Europe. Hopefully Skydio 3 with foldable arms is available here.
mavic air 2 doesn't do 4k quickshots only 1080p
Norm, small correction if I may be allowed to suggest as it has become clear the market, or more the policy makers, need it. They are interesting, exciting, accessible consumer photography drones. One may further want to add a term to differentiate between human controlled, semi-controlled, etc. Otherwise, great video and thanks for showing us how tech is coming along.
Using a one wheel rip off unless that was the prototype.
alo lindo video quisiera que permanezcan haciendo material de calidad¡¡¡!!! Voy a seguir mirando sus creaciones. Les envio un beso chau 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
My friend got one, they look so cool!
That front dive is why you should put fang rollers to your OneWheel
Do you think the autonomous feel of the Mavic Air2 could be improved to the level of the Skydio2 via firmware in the future, or is the design too different? Similarly, if the easy-to-use Skydio2 would have better battery life, that would be the best?
Regarding the cameras, how does the 10-bit color of the DJI compare with the Skydio2?
For those never flown a drone, would a lower cost trainer be helpful, or just jump to the $1k Skydio2?
Regarding autonomous flight: due to the fact that the mavic does'nt have 360° sensors it will never have the same abilities as the skydio. But to be fair the mavic air 2 is better at cinematic shots. So it depends what you're looking for in a drone. -Mavic air 2 owner
Cool Drones !!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely seem more limited with what you can do with a Skydio
Mavic Air 2 has too much jerkiness and jitter. It's also too big for an "air"....almost as big as the original Mavic pro
blurglide I have the air 2 i dont have those issues. I think his gimbal needs calibration 😂
@@bobogao6328 It's actually a common problem... ruclips.net/video/Cq8J-j_JwaA/видео.html
Where i can buy?
The building with blue roof and spire is in San Rafael, Ca!
Skydio footage makes me want to vomit, who designed it to track in circles constantly? Seems like a terrible design for filming...
It only tracks in circles when it's in the orbit. :)
@@Skydio Yep.
18:10 After further review the ruling on the field stands as called
new merch t-shirts?
Where's Adam!
WOOP WOOP DRONES
Skydio looks better to me as a former Mavic user. DJI over sharpen their images, and the general processing isn't great. Shame about the size and battery life of the Skydio.
is it me or does the footage of the mavic air looks really crap as times.? almost like its set to 480 instean of hd/4k
They explain it as noise, it depends on the brightness of the day vs the camera filter used
18:09 kkkkkkk tomou um capóte
Now only if there was a way to actually get a skydio. I've been waiting for 8 months while they hold my deposit.
Unfortunately they have stopped production, due to the current pandemic. Based in california, a lot of california has been forced to shut down.
We are tied. I've been waiting 8 months also. Batch 3
Did y’all get your Skydio2 and how much do you love it?
@@Donaldspiering Yes in September of last year. It's been fantastic.
LOVED that stunt from Adam ! x-D I hope he didn't get hurt though
Is there any way to filter out these videos from the subscriptions? It might just be me but he doesn't look much like Adam Savage to me
After the crash, he looks a bit different.
Hiii
"available on the market right now". Ummm nope. That skydio was a paper-launch. Aside from reviewers, it has not been available to the general buyer. I suspect they tricked many into putting a deposit down on a drone that will never be delivered. I lost $100 to them
Freestyle and racing drones are where the fun is. 120 mph is available off the shelf.
Drone.

I think Skydio should aim to replace DJI.
American consumers want a "Made in the USA" brand and Skydio can be that company.
Bit by bit, challenge DJI and replace eveything across their line-up with a Skydio equivalent and have it Designed & Made in the USA.
Americans are not the only people on earth that buys drones...
@@twitte0king True, but many of us Americans are tired of "made in China". You would do your country a favor by competing in the drone market.
Its actually part of their marketing lol... go on skydio's site, and they have it listed under the skydio 2, stating that they are made here in America.
@@rhinoxrl Good on them.
dji mavik is made in china...it might have the cootievirus...
surly you can find things made closer to home ...to test.
Skydio is based in Northern California...
