      A friend gave me a Tourniquet CD back in 1996. I listened to it and I thought that if this is music that can glorify God then I am interested. I gave my life to Jesus on 3 September 1996 and have been listening ever since. My all time favourite band is Living Sacrifice. More bands you should consider: Mortification, Demon Hunter, Disciple and even some older stuff like Red Sea. Do not worry about what others think as long as you praise God.

    I also noticed that the lyrics in Christian metal tend to be much deeper and more thought provoking than a large majority of modern contemporary Christian songs you hear on the radio. Or maybe the messages in the metal songs come across with more purpose because of the intensity of delivery. I know it’s definitely impacted my life in a positive way. Great video dude.

    • @JosiahNordquist
      @JosiahNordquist  2 года назад +13

      That's how I feel too. I feel like radio-friendly contemporary Christian music has to be written in a certain way so that it pleases its wide audience of listeners which doesn't usually leave much room for creative or inspired lyrics. Or like you said, the gravity of their lyrics doesn't match the intensity of their music. Maybe I'm wrong, but also like you said, there's no denying the positive impact Christian metal music has had on my life, so I know where I stand lol. Thanks so much man!

    I was finally saved in my early 30s. But in high school I fell in love with several Christian metalcore and metal bands (I still love the bands’ Christian albums to this day). Some of my favorite songs by those bands were the more outwardly Christian songs (Chorus of Angels by Haste the Day is still one of my favorite songs of all time). Even though I wasn’t a Christian yet, those songs really moved something in my heart. Now that I am a Christian, those songs mean even more to me. ✝️🙏🏻

    I think HolyName are also another great example. Some good points in your video! I can also personally say, that heavy worship really brings me to my knees and drives truth much harder. I often think of how all creation was made for His glory and worship, from the whisper of the wind to the earth shaking erupting volcano. Jesus said ‘even the stones would cry out’ For me, worship music in the form of Metal is often deeper, bolder, harder and more truth filled. 🙌🏻

      I can't say I've listened to much Christian metal from the 80s or 90s, but from the songs I have heard I would definitely agree with you that Christian metal used to be more explicitly evangelistic. I'm not sure if that has to do with the genre becoming more secularized or that was just more of a trendy way to write music back then, but either way I think it's a good observation to make.

    Brother, you got it right. I really like your point on the counterculture element. That's definitely among the top reasons why Christian Metal as worship works for me, right after biblically sound lyrics in a lot of bands, especially DH, and, well, just the sound of it. Thank you for some of the recommendations here. I would definitely add Project 86 to the list.
    When you mentioned counterculture it immediately reminded me of the old, traditional organ compositions and masses, that just up until recently dominated the Roman Catholic tradition, as well as the old chants, Roman and Byzantine. I listen to all of that almost the same amount of time, depending of course on the mood and circumstances. I found the combination of the three to be a really complete musical worship setting, and the reason really is what you said about the ballads on the heavy albums - the contrast they make in portraying either God's greatness or the struggles of life. I don't know if you have experience with that type of thing, but I seriously recommend it.

    • @JosiahNordquist
      @JosiahNordquist  3 года назад +5

      Project 86 goes hard lol. I've never listened to the organ compositions or chants, but now I'm incredibly curious to. I listened to for today as I lay dying, war if ages, fit for a king and many more bands that I had no idea were christian until one day at a christian book store I saw August burns red albums. It had me so confused because I thought metal was demonic, but then realized that over half the music I was listening to was in fact christian and it made me realize God was watching it for me. Ever since then I believe that music styles like rap, metal, and other genres that have a bad rap can actually be home to groups of Christians that are tighter knit than contemporary christian groups, and is probably more effective at spreading God's word, because they're where more people who don't know God are

    Regardless of the use of algorithms, I don't agree that metal is any better than any other genre for worship. I believe that all genres are equally appropriate for worship. Having extremely eclectic music taste, I feel that the song "You" by Jaci Velasquez is just as good as "Way, Truth, Life" by Mortification. Both songs express love for God each song employees lyrics appropriate to its genre. Metal is what I like to listen to first thing in the morning. It's what I call musical caffeine. I recommend Mortification, Living Sacrifice, Antidemon, Hope for the Dying, Pantokrator, Metanoia, Antestor, Saving Grace and Devine Symphony.

    A very late comment, but I so appreciate the thoughtful reasoning and spirit behind the title assertion. I have been thinking about this idea a long long time I continue to feel that its possible that almost every musical worship experience could benefit from including very heavy music, for example opening with some heavy metal dirge like lament. I think at times it is THE most authentic style and mode of worship music. Plus, praise Him with loud shouts, trumpets, and loud clanging cymbals, right? I also am fascinated with the times, like at Mt Sinai, when God cloaks himself in darkness and shakes the mountains violently, communicating to his people something important about his nature. But essentially I just love the thought of Jesus wanting to cast out the widest possible net of invitation to anyone who is feeling the extremes of emotion and circumstance and musically including them. At some point in their journey, surely everyone can identify with and recognize feelings of anger, despair, and heavy darkness within their soul and we can have a relationship with a God who already knows the depths of our being and longs for us to bring each and every part... not sanitized and presentable, but naked and exposed with all its chaos that the Spirit may hover over it, speak light and life, and bring forth real beauty. And sometimes the right music helps us surface that stuff. However, even accounting for stylistic preferences and psychological dispositions I think a challenge remains to all of us to be able to traverse the spectrum of music styles and appreciate how each can evoke or resonate with different parts of ourselves at different moments -- I think it shows a kind of maturity and growth. Whereas I think a challenge remains for all of who can only listen to one genre and in a sense wallow in its emotional range and tone, but never move beyond it.

    Very well put! I'm surprised I've never seen this before. I'm a worshipping metalhead. A few of my favs are Sleeping Giant, Becoming the Archetype(pure metal genius btw), and though they are billed as secular their lyrics are CLEARLY about Him, Chevelle. The argument I always use regarding faith metal is, WE are in BATTLE! How often did armies go INTO battle with a lullaby as their battle hymn and even IF so did they win?

    I am a Christian that is struggling with faith, so I want to say why Christian metal is my favorite genre.
    Contemporary Christian artists may bring up dark subject matter in between songs with a 15 to 45 minute sermon, followed by yet another generic 4 chord song with 15 band members and 9 guitarists.
    Demon Hunter and Impending Doom are bands that I resonate with more because they are more open about the brutality about the human condition and that faith is NOT AN EASY THING.
    I am a person that HATES aggressive positivity. And the Christian music you hear on Smile FM is the very stuff that is Drowning the average suburban neighborhood into thinking everything is just perfectly fine.
    I've been bullied all my life for my faith. By "believers" and the ones who aren't. Despite my views not being extreme, everyone treats me like I am, and that's why I resonate with bands like these so much.

    • @JosiahNordquist

      I guess I compared Skillet to Nickelback in the sense that they both put out relatively "safe" music, not because they have similar reputations on the internet. That's not to say that either of the bands are bad, it's just to say that neither of them push many boundaries. I agree though that Collide goes pretty heavy! God bless you as well!

    Amen!
    Heavy Metal does indeed should be included, but the Bible also alludes to having a balance - there is a time and place for every thing. There a time to be born and a time to die, a time for peace and a time to war, ect ... in my collection, I have an extremely mix of many genre of music - one style doesn't supersede any other.
    As you get older, you will discover how true this is in your life. At times, I need a good dose of Demon Hunter, Bride, Bloodgood, Saint, Styper, Savior Machine, HB, Amy Grant, Petra, Kingsmen, Hinson, Larry Norman, Rez Band, Barren Cross, Katy Nichole, ect - to only to start with. The list goes on .... yet you claim is true about religious music in general.
    I am not a christian per say, but I do understand the need to have God in one's own life, and to listen to that which you believe in. If heavy metal, grind core, ect is your cup of tea ... then praise to the Lord drink it down. Why waste the time trying to prove something to people who don't listen to your genre in the first place.
    Keep rocking out for God.
    Shalom!

    God is only vengeful and wrathful towards the wicked and sinners who do not repent. It says in psalms 103:8-9 “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever.” But I get what you are saying about having “righteous anger” in the right context. When the demon tormented Saul in the book of Samuel, David played soothing and peaceful music with the harp, and the demon left. It does not make sense either when Elijah saw the wind, earthquake, and the fire, but the Lord was not in them. He was only in the gentle whisper. Doesn’t that mean that we should tune to that gentleness and peaceful music like the contemporary worship music? Or should we have more balance between the two? The more energetic/intensifying and the slow/peaceful? I guess it is for the individual to discern.

    • @JosiahNordquist
      @JosiahNordquist  3 года назад +5

      You make a lot of good points (and you used scripture to back them up lol). I suppose the analogy with Elijah isn't airtight, but I agree that it comes down to individual discernment. I absolutely agree that peaceful music should make up at least some portion of our worship music, but Psalm 150:3-5 also talks about praising God with trumpets, harps, strings, pipes, and clashing cymbals, which doesn't sound quite as "peaceful" lol. I think the bible leaves the door fairly open as far as how we worship through music. The most important thing is that we worship with joyful and humble hearts, which I think you and I both agree on!

    • @jaymieolive3973
      @jaymieolive3973 3 года назад

      uh, did you read the Old testament? God was constantly annihilating humans and not just sinners either. pretty sure a loving and peaceful god would not command the slaughter of men, women, AND children, and yet the Bible says He did just that.

    • @jaymieolive3973
      @jaymieolive3973 3 года назад

      It's ultimately what flavor of music you personally like. I've heard half my life " rock n roll is the devil's music ". But wasn't Helel ( Lucifer in Roman translation ) in charge of all music in Heaven ? What sort of music do you think he governed originally ? I bet praise was up there on the list, likely first and only music, so praise music is Lucifer's music first and foremost. Then, it becomes a matter of message. What do the words infer ? These Christian metal bands have nothing but Godly lyrics, so it checks out by me.
