Great topics bud I rarely get depressed and have a few activities and hobbies but I do get it, being a stranger in a strange land is different, culture shock comes into play I wouldn't live there if I got the same feeling as I've had in a couple countries I've visited ✌️✌️
I just found your channel. I've lived in Thailand for at least 15 years of my life. Now I am living in Bucerias, MX. I wanted to be closer to my kids in California and Hawaii. It was great at first...but my kids have their own lives now. I am thinking about moving to Kampot. I miss SE Asia. My kids say if you want to do it. I'm 68 and I speak Thai and Spanish. I think I can pick up the basics in Cambodia.
Solitude is my cup of tea as well. I generally avoid other people until after I've observed them a bit. If they seem like a decent person I might chat them up a bit. I have a select few here in Cambodia that I see once or twice a week.
I as well enjoy solitude and have lived my life very stress free and remained single here people need 2 incomes and people walk around miserable held for Ransom in relationships
Well said Jon ❤! I agree with your thoughts. I too am an expat from Alberta Canada. Just over one year in Cambodia. I'm here to stay, the western life isn't for me anymore. I've was planning this move since 2009, now I'm here and I wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for sharing and making ME think. 😎🙏
Cheers sir here in 🇨🇦 it's an endless wheel of disillusion my taxes alone are $3200/yr I can totally handle the much simpler life People walk around entitled like look at us but they are fools and chick's will work u into the ground At 60 I'm gone 2 yrs to go May I ask if u live in the city or country ??

My depression kicked in after 7 months straight- working with a traveling monster truck entertainment tour. Rarely saw the same people day in and day out. In my experience, I agree 💯 with Jon. Finding a way to relate to others in the moment, and getting involved in any local activities, events or even gatherings your invited to, is a big help. If I knew that I was staying somewhere for longer than a week, I would work on building more meaningful connections with people & sometimes open up to them and have a more human interaction/ connection
Absolutely. We still have the old "macho man" attitude. I say, just like the bum check when you hit a certain age, perhaps we should also just talk to a doctor about our feelings and mental status. I saw a report that said 1 in 4 Americans are prescribed antidepressants. I think if there has been some preventative maintenance done, perhaps that number wouldn't be so high
Just found your channel, and really appreciate your openness and honesty. Too many expat and so called digital nomad vloggers insist on painting a too perfect, instagram polished version of travel!
Definetly went through all these emotions when I was in Chaing Mai for 16 months, back in the US to reevaluate . Mostly likely will return to SEA in the next 6 months. Thanks for the vlog, well done
Thanks for watching. It seems we go through these cycles. I go back to the states every year to visit family typically for a month. About 2 weeks into it, I want to get back "home" to Cambodia.
Great honest video. Really helped me to hear someone say these things. Although I’m not an expat yet, I go to Thailand every year and speak some Thai. I am aiming towards early retirement in Thailand. But even though I can’t stand living in the uk, I still question myself sometimes. Aren’t we funny creatures?
The strangest thing about people is that our experiences and our mind are capable of changing our biology. Crazy stuff really. I hope you achieve your early retirement. Have you considered other locations outside Thailand?
No I haven’t. I’ve been to Laos and Vietnam but not Cambodia so I could do well to go to Cambodia. I enjoyed Laos and Vietnam but didn’t feel like I wanted to visit them again whereas Thailand has this pull for me. I really like the north. We are flooded at the moment in Chiang mai and I’m still happy to be here 😂
Tropical paradise is basically NYC/DC July all year long, isn't it? Lots of people genuinely hate that. Lots of people would get depressed just from the climate alone.
fair point. We do have "seasons" however they are a bit different than the Metro DC area. Here we have "wet season" still warm but not hot, "high season" aka tourist season, dry and reasonably cool, and then we have "dry season" which is just hot (and dusty) Thanks for your input, always nice to get a comment from the best channel in the world (love the name btw) cheers Alex, all the best
As you read this I do hope you are feeling great! Why does anyone get depressed? I don't think expats are more prone to depression. I do think it is harder for expats to work their way out of a bout with depression. Lots of reasons for this with the main one being expats may create a unique reality. I've lived in Saudi Arabia 5 years, Thailand for 11 and 9 US states.... and... will be beginning to live in Cambodia in 6 months.
@@JonAbroad IT WAS HOT (lol) It was rugged. This was in the 1980's, prior to cell phones and certainly prior to the liberalization of the kingdom. Great topic. I enjoy solitude and generally avoid others. However I have wondered if that would change when living abroad. Food for thought.
