I am quite sure that schools would take you up on your offer to volunteer. I don't know for sure what any requirements would be. I'm not involved in any teaching myself, so I don't have much information to give you. Perhaps find a school or two around the area you'd want to live and send them an email. Facebook could also be a resource. I'm happy to lend advice but teaching and school stuff is outside of my wheel house.

Happy to help! I really enjoyed Chiang Mai when I visited. I am a calm fella and don't really party either. There's a community of married expats here who are laid back, come out in the evenings. It's a very chill town. I am not married but a lot like them, I don't stay out too late. Everything is close and accessible, even if you chose to live a few Kms out.
Good video buddy! I've been checking out Vietnam & Thailand through videos like yours. The problem with short term visas makes it necessary to find a third country to split the time with. I want to do my homework now & avoid problems like where to go to bide time before re-entering. How is visa situation there? Easy, long term? Housing numbers sound good. The visa situation is fairly easy, you can convert to a "business" extension of stay (EOS) without leaving or having to do border runs. Agents make it easy to accomplish. If you end up in Kampot I can refer you to a good agent that won't nickel and dime ya. Thanks for watching

Thank you for watching. I too am diligent when it comes to making fairly large decisions such as moving cities/countries. I lived in SR for a short while, and granted my opinion could be bias due to it being right in the middle of the full-blown COVID situation. I found SR to be a little too overwhelming. Prices were a bit higher than expected however this is a major tourist destination. Kampot has been my home for nearly 2 years now. We do get our tourists here too during high-season but it doesn't take the town over when it is here. Interestingly enough, my choices that I had narrowed down for a long term living destination was either Kampot, or Chiang Mai. I like the fact that you can find just about anything you would want. There are enough activities to keep the boredom away, but quiet enough if you want to just relax. Kampot is split into 5 areas (my view of it anyway) and all can be reached in a matter of minutes from each other. I live in a house that suits me and my needs, but there are options far less expensive, and some that make my house look like a shack. It's all perspective. The best advice I could give anyone who is considering moving here, come here for a visit. Book the first night on Agoda or the like, then walk around and find a cool guest house. Take a few days here to check it out. Get a few real estate dudes to show you some houses and apartments and get them to take you to places all over the area. If you find a place you like, rent a moto and go check it out a few more times, see what it's like at night, check cell connections, see if there are too many dogs barking etc. Get a real feel for the place. If you like it, move here. Sorry for the long winded response, but I do hope this helps.

Kampot is a beautiful little river town. The sea is close but Kampot isn't an ocean town. It's quiet but still has plenty of activities. If you don't mind me asking, why did you leave 5 years ago?
@@JonAbroad At the time, I got homesick after having some expat made Mexican food, and missed concerts, karaoke, and a bunch of other stuff. A lot has changed and so I'm going back to Siem Reap in June and I'm ready to live there indefinitely. There's no way I'll save to retire in the States.
Excellent video! I live for numbers & you provide plenty. I'll be checking you out. I'm interested in Cambodia mainly because of visa requirements. They seem to be the easiest I've seen in the region. My heart is in Thailand & Vietnam, but 90 days in Thailand & 30 in Vietnam is a real pain in the ass. I could leave every 30 days & return to Vietnam, but no thanks. I think that will change in time, but for now Cambodia looks like the perfect perch between the two. Kampot is a wonderful place to hang your hat. Being near the sea is a necessity for me. Something about the water just helps me find my zen. Cambodia is a great place if you like Thailand and Vietnam. Phnom Penh to Bangkok is a 55 minute flight and roughly the same time to Ho Chi Minh. The visa situation here is fantastic, no border runs, 1 year options are relatively inexpensive. Cambodia is wonderful. Thank you for watching and I hope you make it over here.

This would be dependent on your age and what current conditions you may have. The only thing I could recommend is looking at the Forte website and inquire with them. They are based in Cambodia.
Passapp and Grab. I prefer passapp myself but Grab will work in Thailand Vietnam as well. If you are just passing through, maybe Grab will be the better choice. Take a look at the video called "download these apps" I have a more detailed description of them on there.

First of all, an early congratulations on the move to Cambodia! The visa here is easy and it appears that you've done the research. In regards to what city to live in. There are advantages and disadvantages to any town, same as any other country. My recommendation would be to join a few expat related Facebook groups. Watch their posts and see what people who are living in these cities are talking about. This will give you some insight on the town. The best advice I could give is spend a month or so traveling the country. When you get to Siem Reap, stay there for a couple of weeks, change guest houses every few days and stay in different areas of town and get a feel for it. If you are moving here during high season there will be a lot of tourists, especially in SR. I really enjoy Kampot. I'm 15 minutes from a great beach town, 15 minutes from the base of a mountain. The weather patterns here are more hospitable. I'm 2 hours away from Phnom Penh. The location here is great. Again, this is my opinion and I encourage you to venture out and check out different towns and different communes inside those town. Thank you for watching my video.

Temperatures during this season fluctuate from a low of 27.1°F (-2.7°C) in January to a higher, but still chilly, 42.4°F (5.8°C) in February. Baltimore's winters also have lower rainfall, with an average of around 1.97" (50mm) in February.
just meal prepping saves a couple of hundred. i live in eastern europe and buy all of my foods in bazaars and it saves a ton to make food in bulk and make sure the jars are sterilized so it keeps for weeks in the fridge
you can meal prep for a month if you want to. I run to the market once a week for provisions. I eat about 3 meals a week at home. As a single guy it's often just as cheap to eat out to be fair.
Electric is stable in town for the most part. We do see outages from time to time, usually weather related. Water depending on where you live could be well or city. I've had both. Most places will have pumps that kick on to get better water pressure. My current house is on city water and doesn't need a pump. Tap water is fine for showers, laundry etc. Don't drink the tap water, even the locals don't. Wifi is all dependent on what service you use. Most businesses around have wifi but if you get smart with a data plan ($6/mo) you won't ever need wifi.
your best bet is to join some Facebook groups. there are some that are geared towards a town or city. In Kampot there is a group called "Kampot Noticeboard" and there are lots of people showing rentals and such. Do a search in these groups and find posts related to what you are looking for. In regards to your visa, again check the Facebook groups. You'll find someone recommending an agent and read the comments to see what others are saying. I hope this helps
There are a few saunas in town. Off the top of my head I can't remember the name but it's right in town, they have ice pools as well as a sauna. Clean place with professional staff. I know a number of people who go there, foreigners and locals alike.
Post-Covid cost of living is increasing in price for sure. To be fair the US had a 5.6% and a 8.7% average CPI in back to back years. Considering my rent hasn't increased in 2 years is still amazing to me. Thank you for watching, I appreciate it.

There is a nice expat community here. I've got 2 kiwi mates and a couple Aussie mates as well. A few Brits and Scots as well. The expat group I socialize with are mostly married to khmers and are well integrated in the local community.
The British pound is actually the best performing major currency in the world the last 2 months. Up almost 25 percent which is massive move for a currency in that sort of time frame. Its currently trading a 1.24 it's highest rate for 8 months. If you'd made this video back in early November 2022 - and maybe you did - you'd be right. Not so much now.
You are absolutely correct, I was making reference to what had changed in the last year (or so) since my last cost of living video. Thank you for your input for sure, I try to be as accurate as I can be.
A frugal yet comfortable studio w/ac is fine with me. Don't smoke or drink and quit chasing women. Too old and slow ! --All alone & happily divorced since 1989 so I'm quite content with good food eating out - mostly good deal hunting. -- However health care is important @ 73 so 'perhaps' -- Siem Reap is the better choice for quality hospitals ? -- What say you sir ? -- I have a $1500 budget & would like to save 400 - 500 / month - if possible. > Is that a doable thing with health insurance over there ? -- Biden's America is killing me financially ! So looking for cheap.
Keeping a cost of living below $1000 is certainly possible. Health insurance is not something I am able to speak on myself, you would have to do more research in that field of information. Best hospitals, Phnom Penh has the best of those. There are however great clinics with English speaking doctors and staff in every town that has an expat presence. Phnom Penh can be inexpensive if you stay further from the main areas of town. Just 10km out you can find deals. I would suggest that you have and maintain a healthy savings account for the "oh shit" moments of life. There are plenty of folks living in Cambodia who are on SSI (near the dollar amount you provided) and they pull it off just fine. Please keep in mind that what the US does in the financial sector can and will affect the world's finances.
Southeast Asia was where I've always wanted to go. I did a month long trip in the region before moving here and found Cambodia to be friendlier and more welcoming than the other countries I visited.

Kampot is a little slower of a town and the breeze from the coast for me is more enjoyable. The weather also seems to be a bit cooler in general.

Tap water is fine for showers, laundry etc. Don't drink the tap water, even the locals don't. Wifi is all dependent on what service you use. Most businesses around have wifi but if you get smart with a data plan ($6/mo) you won't ever need wifi.

your best bet is to join some Facebook groups. there are some that are geared towards a town or city. In Kampot there is a group called "Kampot Noticeboard" and there are lots of people showing rentals and such. Do a search in these groups and find posts related to what you are looking for.
In regards to your visa, again check the Facebook groups. You'll find someone recommending an agent and read the comments to see what others are saying.

Is there a sauna near by?
There are a few saunas in town. Off the top of my head I can't remember the name but it's right in town, they have ice pools as well as a sauna. Clean place with professional staff. I know a number of people who go there, foreigners and locals alike.

Post-Covid cost of living is increasing in price for sure. To be fair the US had a 5.6% and a 8.7% average CPI in back to back years. Considering my rent hasn't increased in 2 years is still amazing to me. Thank you for watching, I appreciate it.

There is a nice expat community here. I've got 2 kiwi mates and a couple Aussie mates as well. A few Brits and Scots as well.
The expat group I socialize with are mostly married to khmers and are well integrated in the local community.

The British pound is actually the best performing major currency in the world the last 2 months. Up almost 25 percent which is massive move for a currency in that sort of time frame. Its currently trading a 1.24 it's highest rate for 8 months.

Keeping a cost of living below $1000 is certainly possible. Health insurance is not something I am able to speak on myself, you would have to do more research in that field of information. Best hospitals, Phnom Penh has the best of those. There are however great clinics with English speaking doctors and staff in every town that has an expat presence. Phnom Penh can be inexpensive if you stay further from the main areas of town. Just 10km out you can find deals.
I would suggest that you have and maintain a healthy savings account for the "oh shit" moments of life. There are plenty of folks living in Cambodia who are on SSI (near the dollar amount you provided) and they pull it off just fine.
Please keep in mind that what the US does in the financial sector can and will affect the world's finances.

Southeast Asia was where I've always wanted to go. I did a month long trip in the region before moving here and found Cambodia to be friendlier and more welcoming than the other countries I visited.
