There’s always going to be the people in the comment section saying “oh easy for you to say. I have to pay for X,Y,Z” No. Most of us could live for less. @@kathrinkaefer Yeah innit. I literally can't make any more cut backs. I still can't save nothing, i'm in my overdraft every month. All my money goes on bills and food. I even grow a lot of my own food, it still aint enough.
Not speaking of a car or various luxuries but at least, you need a food, shelter, clothes and occasionaly a medical help, right? You just can't live in the woods, not anythere in European continent, or in the USA, at least. There is simply not enough wild animals to hunt anymore. And even if they were, you need a hunting licence, or how it is called in your country. You cannot just chop some wood for building a home or heating it either - you will be arrested for it. You can not settle on some unclaimed land - there is no such thing anymore. You can't build your house on your own property without a shitton of licenses and inspections from the government. And building materials are not free either. Same goes for homegrown food - it could prove itself even more expensive than if you buy it in a supermarket. If you don't have your own house or apartment, then you have to pay to your landlord. Of course, you always can live under a bridge in a cardboard box, but I doubt that life would make you happy without hefty daily dose of alcohole or drugs (which is again wouldn't come for free). And what if you would fell ill? Even if your country have a free or semi-free health care (mine do - with my health condition i would already be either dead or hopelessly in debts if I had to pay my hospital bills on my own), you'll still need to buy your prescribed drugs, and farmaceutical companies are greedy as hell. Just face it: novadays society is built in such a way that people just can't live on their own, without a Big Brother type government. Resouses is too scarce to just live a "simple life" and those who distributing these resourses have a complete power over us.

I spent 32 years with a man that never bought anything except a used vehicle here and there. If it wasn't free, he didn't need it. I couldn't understand why someone wouldn't want to buy and have nice things. We had nice things people gave us or I bought myself but, now I get it. He didn't need them to be happy, his family, friends, and way of life satisfied him. He didn't need things, he was a simple man. I would trade all of my unnecessary things, for a small home in the Country where I could grow my own food, raise some chickens, etc., and be one with nature. If I knew then, what I know now, I would have done things much differently.
in the words of Marcus Aurelius - When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.
In the words of the United States of America - when you arise in the morning, think of how lucky you are to work constantly at several low paying jobs while being barely able to afford food and housing, you can forget living, laughing, loving, and appreciating. Sold my flat, bought a tiny house with a big property next to a beautiful lake inland in norway. I can grow my own vegetables, fish in the lake, chop my own firewood. I've got no neighbours, clean air, clean well-water, and when I sit on the veranda I can only hear birdsong. No cars, no traffic noise, no sirens. No industrial sounds. At night I can see stars clearly, there is no light-pollution. My mental health went from depressed, miserable, and horrible to great. I'm at peace. I can touch grass barefeet in the morning, feel the morning dew. I can go for a swim without taking the car, bus or train to get to water. And I can do so nude because there is no people around. In a year I've had close encounters with deer, moose, foxes, badgers, hedgehogs, squirrels, wild game, ravens, eagles and every snake, frog and insect we have. Not on the TV. With my own eyes, up close. It's absolute freedom. And its wonderful. It took me years of work, preparation, savings. But the value is immeasurable.

People say 'freedom' as if it is a thing one can attain. Give a man free time and he will fill it up with productive things. "Freedom' in this regard doesn't exist. What we can have is more autonomy over our life. In order to achieve anything, or to experience another, we need to give some of our 'freedom' for something greater. Kind of like paid work.
Since I retired my greatest joy in life is to wake up in the morning with absolutely nothing to do! don't have to be anywhere, can spend the day as I wish, that's what I call freedom. Shame that I had to get this old in order to do this but better late than never.
You do need something to do which you enjoy, though..something to wake up for and be enthusiastic about. Idleness and potential lack of meaning make one deteriorate very quickly. Not saying this is you..just saying, you know. Wish you all the best. :)
It's thought-provoking to even imagine the future visions presented by organizations like the WEF. I'm nearing 53 and thinking about the next 13 years, this is a reminder to address my fears now, particularly the financial ones. It's unrealistic to expect that 13 more years in a 9-5 job will fix those fears when I'm 65 and retired

I am 79 years old, have no children, my partner died 12 years ago. Almost 10 years ago, I moved to the rural setting where I grew up. I have decided that my contentment lies with cutting ties with people whose values have always differed from mine. Such people bring expectations of me. I don't want them in my home; I don't want to spend time in theirs. I have no interest in their accomplishments or their possessions. I don't want to be dependent. People ask: at your age, aren't you anxious about the future? I embrace the Buddhist saying "Leap and the net will appear!"
I needed this message. I did walk away from everything in 2018 in search of a cabin in the woods and lots of doing nothing except what makes me happy. Unfortunately I got distracted by a man that did everything to keep me in his world, a different version of what I was leaving behind. I broke free and packed everything and told him "you wanted to control everything in my life, now its your burden" and I walked away again. As I sit here frustrated because I don't have a plan so I don't know what to do. I turned on the TV (RUclips) and this video pops up. I started to think "what do I want to do" ... then I smiled because I want to do what I wanted to do... I want to head to the forest, feed the birds, buy an old-fashioned rocking chair and drive to West Virginia, find a place to sit and drink freshly squeezed lemonade. That's what I want to do. Thank you.
In a world where "keep yourself busy" is one of the ultimate currencies, giving ourselves time to enjoy the quietness is an act of rebellion that is worth more than we think. Thank you!
The funny thing is the happiest time of my life was when I barely did anything. Worked part time, pottered around in the garden. Slept a lot, went on long walks. Now i'm "keeping busy" i'm miserable.
I think keeping busy is an excuse for not doing ANY self reflection.people I believe are genuinely scared of what they will find once they look at themselves
It's more a matter of how you keep yourself busy. Some people always claim to be bored, but I can't understand them. I'm always busy, never bored, but I do things I want to do.
I live in the UK, and whilst down sizing your life is definitely something that can lead to less work and less focus on work in some areas of the country, it's REALLY hard to fully simplify life here. Cities are cheaper than countryside. Housing is astronomical everywhere, and planning rules are so severe that your ability to buy land and live in a cheap built simple building or tiny house or even a shed are hugely restricted - mostly you'd have to get planning permission for an expensive properly built house to succeed at that. There's no wild camping allowed in England, and whilst some people do try, your highly likely to have an angry farmer from nearby, or jobs worth dog walker complain about or threaten you and maybe even get the police involved. My goal would be to have an allotment (like a teeny tiny garden that you can rent for cheap to grow stuff on), but the waiting lists for them are years long and there's none within the 3 mile area that I live. All in all it's brutally difficult to live a simple life here, I've been happy in the past with no car using cycling, walking and public transport to travel. And I can do without fancy TV channels and treats, even meals out and cinema trips. And I love walking and spending time in nature, which I'm thankful I do at least have access to (many people on low incomes here just aren't able to access nature - it's almost a well off person thing), but I do wish they didn't make it so hard what feels like a normal existence - bit of growing your own food (not self sufficient just supplementing), lots of outdoors, and spending time cooking, chatting, walking, just living, instead of working. It shouldn't be this hard to do - there's something very wrong with a country when nature becomes accessible for the rich, when you cannot access work without a car because cycling is downright suicidal (in some parts of the country), where basic cheap housing either doesn't exist, or is a rabbit hutch with mould in the middle of a bleak cityscape.
And they have planned it to be this way, we are fully dependent upon the state, we are actually still slaves, we cannot fully grow our own food, fruit and veg we can grow some, animals we have to register, even now down to chickens, we certainly cannot slaughter our own animals, if we do not comply with all their rules then there is always the threat of violence and menace, yes violence, from the police to the bailiffs they use the threat of violence I.e. the threat of being put in torture cuffs then pepper sprayed or tapered, or even shot let’s not forget about the humble truncheon, all of these are weapons, that if we were to carry any of them then we would be arrested and charged, maybe even incarcerated, let’s then discuss all the financial penalties they can impose upon us, regardless of whether or not we actually have any money, we are slaves even in his Norwegian gilded cage he is a slave, I appreciate the message but we are re not free we are enslaved,
I've noticed the same in the UK. I feel called to move to Sweden, Norway or the Netherlands for a better quality of life. I want to be able to easily cycle my bike, go easily into nature, able to buy an affordable house in a nice area without having to have a huge mortgage.
People say "I just want to be happy", but they trying to say "I just want to be free"....oh man, that was huge. Thanks for that words. Cheers from Poland :)

Irresponsible and illogical motto. Inevitably you yourself are treading on others. You live in this world, you eat food, you make a shelter, you are treading on other living things. So you can’t turn around and say “don’t tread on me”. We have to coexist with the world around us. Isolation is not an option, only a delusion.
@@NormieWeimarican There are cultures who never thought gold to be of that type of value. Shocker, but it's true. Look into it. So your presumption of spending on gold and silver instead of on, say, useful tools or the like whose value is more objective (at least insofar as anything that pertains to what is still human behavior can be), makes no sense. Besides, since nobody uses gold and silver directly as money now you'd have to either establish that economy first, magically hope that someone else will do so for some reason _and_ also _won't_ do something else instead. All you've done otherwise, is just double your entanglement with the existing society since to use those gold and silver you will first have to sell them for fiat cash before you can then buy the items you want. So, again, it makes more sense to buy truly valuable hard assets that you can actually do things with.
My father had a saying “The more you have, the more you have to worry about” Some people chase money because they think it will make them happy, but fail to realise that happiness is a state of mind, some people are happy (even when they have nothing by modern standards), and others are sad and miserable when they seem to have it all.
And some people are happy and content and fulfilled when they “seem to have it all” Works both ways buddy. Your dad fed you the miserable version… so your choice as two sides to every coin. Make excuses and justify why being “poor is cool”. Or be happy and content and “have with all” Your choice

I owned a small house and still do, but I bought a big house closer to my work and now I feel like, this didn't make me happy, it just took my freedom, so I'm in the process of selling it and am going to use the money to fix up my old house and be mortgage free. This is so true and something that most people don't realize until they're older and wiser. I want to work less, money doesn't mean much to me as long as I have enough to eat and a roof over my head. Time becomes increasingly more valuable the older you get and money becomes increasingly less valuable, for me at least. Great video, thanks!
I am working hard in my GARDEN and chickens taking care of my hunting guns. Preparing in every way to be on my own. I WILL TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY. YOU ALL ARE ON YOUR OWN. YOU MUST SAVE YOURSELF❤
I've been trying to tell people this for the longest, the 9-5 rat race hustle culture isn't the way. People would rather slave away at a job they hate for their entire life to pay for big expensive houses and cars; then buy something cheaper that wouldn't be a burden and would allow them to work less and actually live. People are way too worried about what others will think of them and they think they have to buy expensive items, so people don't think less of them. I really wish people would understand that for example driving a 20-year-old car and having a smaller home with no debt is the biggest win.

Our bills are property taxes, electricity, basic internet, vehicle fuel, and maintenance. No phone, cable, or cell phone.

I see freedom as doing what you want rather than doing nothing....But I am happy if you are happy
This is why companies and the owning class want to raise the retirement age.

@@keithparker1346 BINGO.

So true! Took me time to realize that
I’ve spent years working hard getting a degree, doing internships, breaking into my field, and essentially just devoting all my time to being “successful”. After doing that for years I have found out that there is never true satisfaction from just grinding all the time. I have decided that this summer I will be quitting my job and going to go spend a month hiking the Colorado trail. I can’t wait to get out and just exist is nature for an extended period of time and to see new things and meet new people. I really think it will be a nice reset and provide me with more memories than I have made in the last few years of just working all the time. All of this is to say I couldn’t agree with you more.
Maybe don’t quit, just take a month off. You never know how much greener the grass is.
@@tr1ckster726 that was my first choice, in short they told me no. In the same conversation though they somehow spun it towards talking about how I will need to be taking on some more responsibilities because of some other people leaving, I was also offered a hefty 50 cent raise for my troubles.
This commentary pretty much sums up my way of thinking. I figured this out over 10 years ago and executed that plan of freedom. I left the city and bought a house nestled in the woods where I spend all day every day close to nature. Every day is a happy day, as quality of life is amazing.
That plan involved a shit ton of money however.

When I turned 50, I had a revelation. Had a home, land, lots of stuff, and I realized all the things I’d spent my life working for were holding me back from traveling, and being free. I gave most of it away, now I live out of the back of my truck and see the country. Homes can be a prison, possessions can become a ball and chain. The “American Dream” is YOUR choice, tell society to kiss your azz.

Hey Bull, I just turned 60 and made the same conclusion. I have been pleasing everybody else with my labor and hard work all my life. Whoever I worked for I always give 110%. I am fishing, hunting, and camping much more now as well as Blacksmithing, farming my own food & antique woodworking restorations. I have already been telling and learning how to say no. When I turned 60 I woke up and realized I have given 3/4 of my life and time to help everybody else. I thought busting my ass until I dropped was the manly thing to do. I was a people pleaser. My boys are in there 30s & doing the same thing now. I am trying to get them to live more for their self's and spend time with their families. FREEDOM.
When people say they just want to be happy all they really want is to be free. Damn i think we all needed to hear that.
No. It means they don't want to endure the suffering of life. It's immensely weak to want to escape life like some selfish useless being that no one can depend on except to betray and abandon his folk and duty to go live alone and away from struggle. How absolutely selfish.
One can't be 'free', there is no such thing. What they mean is living 'autonomously'.

I’m gonna build a small hearth out in the middle of nowhere, just squat and do what I want.

I'm learning this too I'm 56 and chasing a devaluing currency to get things is slavery
Experience is the best teacher and we are only responsible for ourselves.
People who say this are in the privileged position of having something to sacrifice. Where do you go from already living as cheaply as you can?

@@gustaf3387Don’t worry. It’s usually people with money already who say these things. The average person needs to work, unless they inherit money or win the lottery.
@gustaf3387 My wife and I scraped by for years, both working part time, seasonal jobs while starting our homestead. Now she works full time and I stay home on the farm. We raise and process chickens, turkeys, ducks, pigs, goats and cows. I spend the summers baling hay to feed our herd and gardening. We did "inherit" this farmhouse that my grandfather built, and the 1870s barn that sits on our 4 acres, and the 60s and 70s era haying equipment that I use and maintain. We heat with mostly wood. Our bills are property taxes, electricity, basic internet, vehicle fuel, and maintenance. No phone, cable, or cell phone.
This is not a commercial farm. We gave up on the idea of making any money on farming. There's no market here, really, too rural. We donate excess produce or barter to restaurants for home/kitchen supplies.
