Right before that @3:51 he changed the line "I pray for God's mercy" to "I ask for no mercy". I'm very much Team Sting in general, and there's a lot to like about all three versions, but +5 to Bruce just for that.
It's rare that a song covered by another artist sounds just as good or better as the original performer. Bruce knocked it out of the park. He ain't called the Boss for nothing. Great song!!
What an awesome, perfect performance. Note the attention to detail (E.G., the 5 second pause at 3:57) And he brought THE guitar, the 1950s Fender, with a Telecaster body and an Esquire neck, that's on the cover of Born to Run, and that somewhere along the way picked up a chip. Too bad he never learned to play like the great guitarists (I hope it's obvious I'm joking.) Man, he does more than make that guitar talk, in this song he makes it scream. Perfect.
Pity in the "attention to detail" they leave out a 1/8 note every bar.... it's not in 4/4 but in 9/8 (5/8+4/8). If you mess that up, you can't say they have attention to detail. Probably 9/8 is too hard for them.
@@marcvolgers8352interesting you mention that, I always assumed it was deliberate for an added effect on Springsteen’s more raw performance than Sting’s original (which I do also love)

I’ve heard Bruce sing this song many times, It’s always been a favourite but these last few weeks I’ve been playing it a lot more and have grown to love Bruce doing this song.🎼♥️🇦🇺♥️🇺🇸💋
This is the best cover Bruce has ever done. I'm a fan since 1974 and was totally unaware of this tune or this performance. I have watched it over and over. It is flawless. The lyrics are borrowed from Bruce's Nebraska LP. Maybe that is why Bruce took ownership of it during this performance. The band is exceptional and clearly aware of their epic performance. There are smiles all around. Is that David Sancious on keyboards? Bruce can play lead when he wants to.
Big Bruce fan; he nails this song, can't stop playing it. (I'm not taking anything away from Sting or Cash but I love this video. Weirdly it's the sexiest I've seen Bruce in a while; he was workin' it. Thanx for posting.
I love this version of the song (after discovering it via "The Shield"). Bruce gets so visceral on guitar. And I love the shit-eating grin the drummer has near the end because he knows they NAILED this performance. Just an all-around bad-ass video.
It's an awesome live rendition of a great song in my opinion. I'm sorry you don't enjoy it, but can see where someone wouldn't like it. That's the cool thing about music. You can love it or hate it. I'd like to see some links to music you consider 'good', just to widen my experience. No hate here, just looking to find some good tunes!
@@bender8275 no. A more accomplished performance. This version feels more raw and he plays the solo twice. I've just watched the Kennedy version but this still wins for me.
"I ask for no mercy, for soon I'll be dead". The original went "I prayed for God's mercy". Looks like the Boss asks for no one's mercy, not even Gods'.
This is definitely the ultimate version, better even than the polished one from the Kennedy Center. Really earthy vocals and the imperfect solo nails it. Sting did not find the best arrangement for it, but his lyrics are clever. That's pop music!
I would say Ike and Tina own Proud Mary along with the great John Foggerty. Cash and Springsteen can make the same claim with this classic by Sting. All three versions are perfectly delivered by three absolute giants.
He's not a great guitar player. He's capable. I enjoy his solos- they're emotional and they fit the song, and I like his tones, but there's usually nothing technically impressive about them.

I never would've guessed in a million years that Sting wrote this, but I saw the Tribute to Sting. I would've sworn it was a Bruce song. He always makes it his own. The pause before the title repeat really makes the song more soulful. I like Sting's version when he sings it, but I prefer Bruce. Either way, it's a great song.
"The song is one of very few popular tunes written in . It makes use of the Bulgarian aksak rhythm Grancharsko horo which is bichronal meaning it has the effect of alternating groups of 4- and 5-beat bars." gotta love WIKI . . . . .
well i thought my fave Bruce cover is PURPLE RAIN, tribute to Price, but this one from his buddy STING is simply the best... I hung my head and crane my neck, literally, thanks Bruce wonderful as always
Interesting Curious to know, was sting at this performance?, because that’s Dominic Miller on guitar and Vinnie Calaiuta on drums who both performed on that studio version of this song from Sting’s Mercury Falling album. So what is this an all-star cast here? I suppose I need to dive deeper into this whole performance 🎭 but either way Bruce does a wonderful job for sure he’s a great artist!
Nobody can take anything away from Cash or from Sting who owns it! But my God, Bruce Springsteen does more than could ever be asked for.
Sounds like Bruce owns this one now.
