I am an old man who discovered Mink DeVille thanks to a friend who had just bought "Le chat bleu" (only LPs back then, early 1980's). I did not connect so soon with it but I did. Willy has been a lifetime musical companion from then on and I am glad to see videos of him, even after his departure, RIP. One of the real good / bad guys.

Isn’t it sad that this immense talent was never really allowed to blossom here in the US? Maybe allowed is the wrong word, but I find it hard to believe he wasn’t so much better known. What an amazing singer/songwriter/performer. And yes, Freddy Koella and the band are simply sublime. That guitar! Some in the band don't realize that and become bitter. Willy always had the best band. But Willy was the only one who had that amazing voice.
In the early 80’s I saw a German TV registration of Willy at Rockpalast and I was flabbergasted how he is living the music. I had to wait until the mid 90’s to see him live in Eindhoven and it was stunning how he plays his music in entire simplicity. No distractions only Willy doing his music.

Willy was part Pequot native American out of Connecticut--hope their community is as proud and overwhelmed by this talent--irreplaceable--as the rest of us. Wonderful, wonderful Willy strung out but beyond beautiful talent.
I think he deserves a very public display of some kind--maybe old posters and biographical infomation--a new generation could seek him out and we older ones could remember with admiration and maybe new knowledge of his native heritage,

I saw Mink Deville play with my buddies Cap'n Swing (before they became the Cars) in Boston at the Rat a few times in mid 70s. Willie and his band was awewome, and played this great song and such cool music, so ahead of his time. Special times and those 2 bands made it even more so. And we partied hard.

When I lived in NYC in the 80's I saw two concerts back to back. The first was The Rolling Stones in a huge stadium, distant, faceless, empty. The next night was Willy Deville at the intimate Bottom Line. One was a consumer product. Willy was the true artist.

He absorbed so many influences, from Cajun to Spanish to R&B, and made something of his own. And such a moving singer. He also had a heroin problem and a sad personal life. He was only 58 when he died. But the music was so incredible.
I agree! Multi-talented. So direct, passionate and very tough. Hard to get into addicted lives. Few, really succeed. It beat them. But, it ruled by then. R.I.P.

It's just he'd worked so hard to get off heroin and he finally did, which is an amazing feat, only to have one of the worst cancers take his life a few years later. I was in NYC and introduced to his music in 1978 and loved his art since then. Blessings to you and yours.

@@darlingusa2pettee57 thank you very much for correcting me. Somewhere along the line I heard drugs but should have researched to confirm as it’s unfair to him and his family. Willy had a profound impact on so many in so short a time and is deeply missed.
@@WSStreit I certainly didn't mean it to be rude. It's just he'd worked so hard to get off heroin and he finally did, which is an amazing feat, only to have one of the worst cancers take his life a few years later. I was in NYC and introduced to his music in 1978 and loved his art since then. Blessings to you and yours.
Lost the battle to pancreatic cancer. He was drug free many years before he passed away.
