I only ever knew this as a Johnny Cash song, and I assumed it was written by some dusty old balladeer from west of the Pecos. Then I stumble across this version by Bruce and I find out that it was actually written by a man from Nothumberland. Having listened to all three versions, Sting, Johnny and Bruce, I would say that Sting's is great, Johnny's is superb and Bruce's is a masterpiece. The song is made for Bruce, and I know some people don't like the guitar solo but I love it.
That guitar solo IS the unspoken part of the anguish the lead role feels throughout the entire song.... there's pain, anguish, rage for a deed that should not have taken place.... I have heard this version of Bruce many times, and every time he does it it adds a different layer of pain to it. One exuberant artist and story teller. Hat off to him... I am enthralled by the way he performs this song. Totally agree with you, it is a masterpiece!
Has a guitar solo ever captured the emotion of a song more viscerally and put you right into the head and heart of the narrator? A buzzsaw that just eviscerates it's audience - damn, Bruce. Damn.
@@bigcityjunglecatenvisageth1422 this. I do like the rendition by J. Cash, too. It's different but has a deep quality. I do not like Sting's original. How about you?
Sting may have written this, but Bruce owns it, lock, stock, and barrel. Bruce’s version is a lot more gritty than Sting’s. The desperation, self-loathing, remorse, and resignation in Bruce’s voice cuts to the bone.
Listened to 3 versions now after discovering this song. By Sting, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash. All artists that I like. Ironically, although he wrote it, Stings version isn't as good as the other 2, but Johnny Cash's is the best of the 3 in my opinion.
I don't care how many notes per second anybody can play, nobody's guitar playing excites me and moves me like Bruce's. Looking at the musicians' faces here I don't think it's just me.
The silences before the chorus - which I don't believe are in Sting's original - are heartbreaking. They only go on for a measure or so, but it seems Bruce could hold them as long as he wanted. His version of this character makes me weep.
Amazing performance. The awe of the band members was special. Even more special to have an original E Streeter, David Sancious on keyboard to make it even more sweeter.
Phenomenal performance by an artist that just keeps doing it. Unbelievable solo; no one tells a story like only Bruce can with his guitar. You just keep them coming…..surprises! Such a gifted artist. No one else even comes close in my book! What a performance and you really get to it to tell the story like no one else can!🌟
I think he gets overlooked because when he is with the ESB, Nils and Stevie are the ones who really get to show their talent. Relieves him and frees him up to be all over the place on stage, in the crowd, goofing, dancing, etc... He does seem to really enjoy the times when he has a chance to show his skills.
True. He’s said that he knew that he was a good guitarist, but not great. He also said he wasn’t the best singer, so he knew his songwriting will be the thing that distinguishes him from most. I would say that what he didn’t say, and that his front man stage presence, passion, charm, and ability to bring a sense of communal experience with his audience is second to none!
I could hear this one over and over... Bruce is just great! What I also love very much is that there's David Sancious at the Piano. He has worked with Sting for years, but he is also one of the original members of the E Street Band! They actually got the name because of the street where David (beeing only 16 at the time) lived with his mother. They recorded the first two albums together. David and drummer Ernest Carter left the band in 1975 for the opportunity of a solo carreer - after recording Born to run☺.
+MartinBlanford this and "One Headlight" by the Wallflowers are two songs by other artists that may as well been written by him, they're completely in his wheelhouse
*LYRICS-LYRICS-LYRICS* *Early one morning With time to kill I borrowed Jebb's rifle And sat on the hill I saw a lone rider Crossing the plain I drew a bead on him To practise my aim My brother's rifle Went off in my hand A shot rang out Across the land The horse, he kept running The rider was dead I hung my head I hung my head I set off running To wake from the dream My brother's rifle Went into the stream I kept on running Into the salt lands That's where they found me My head in my hands The sheriff he asked me "Why had I run?" I love that when Bruce plays his guitar, you can hear it! :) Even before he breaks out here, (and after), you can hear what he's playing. Lot's of singers hold a guitar as a prop. Not the Boss!!!!
Does anyone else interpret the long build up at the end as the man waiting in the noose before they finally drop him? The buildup is him becoming more and more scared before the bottom finally falls out below his feet. Jesus, I can't listen to the last verse without my hair standing up. It's so fucking powerful.
That's interesting because I interpret the buildup as the man wanting it to be over, not fear but frustration at it taking so long. But yeah your right no matter how interpret, it is powerful.

Damn damn damn that is awesome. Bruce’s guitar 🔥🔥🔥
Sting's thoughtful , introspective lyrics + Bruce's brooding intense interpretation= music jackpot.
birdmantd Johnny Cash wrote this song, not Sting.
+Bill Gibbs Yup, Sting wrote it.. I found that hard to believe at first too..
Bill Gibbs Wrong. It WAS written by Sting. Check your facts...
I love the ironic repetition of the phrase "early one morning with time to kill."
From a 59 yr old Australian so so happy l got to live the same time as you Bruce
You could practically feel the lump in Springsteen throat and the plea in his guitar, awesome.
My Man Bruce just kills this song ! Masterful Solos Blows this Band Away!!! Long Live BRUCE!!!
Love this mans voice and the way he interprets a song. So much emotion. He really is the Boss!

Agreed. Always reminds me of Neil Young's guitar solos.
ezrabiggins90 just plays more emotionaly than anybody
ezrabiggins90 +1 still my favorite Bruce video. though there are other greats. This one has all the emotion and sexy I see and hear at his concerts.

Leave it to Dominic Millar (also on stage there) to do the really clever guitar stuff of the original...

*Early one morning
With time to kill
I borrowed Jebb's rifle
And sat on the hill
I saw a lone rider
Crossing the plain
I drew a bead on him
To practise my aim
My brother's rifle
Went off in my hand
A shot rang out
Across the land
The horse, he kept running
The rider was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head
I set off running
To wake from the dream
My brother's rifle
Went into the stream
I kept on running
Into the salt lands
That's where they found me
My head in my hands
The sheriff he asked me
"Why had I run?"
And then it came to me
Just what I had done
And all for no reason
Just one piece of lead
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung me head
I hung my head
Here in the court house
The whole town was there
I see the judge
High up in his chair
"Explain to the courtroom
What went through your mind.
And we'll ask the jury
What verdict they find."
I felt the power
Of death over life
I orphaned his children
I widowed his wife
I ask no forgiveness
I wish I was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head
*Early one morning
With time to kill
I see the gallows
Upon a hill
And out in the distance
A trick of the brain
I see a lone rider
Crossing the plain*
*And he'd come to fetch me
To see what they'd done
And we'd ride together
To Kingdom come
I ask for no mercy
For soon I'd be dead
I hung my head
I hung my head*
*I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head*
