Let's see..Kenny Kirkland playing two independent keyboard parts in a difficult time signature. Vinnie Colaiuta (perhaps the best live snare sound in history) and holding down a difficult signature seamlessly. Perfect harmonies. A horn section that's tasteful, in tune and dynamic. Sting playing a bass part in a very difficult time signature while singing a completely counterpucntual part without missing a beat. Yep....it's a mess alright.
This band was, in my opinion, one of the best bands Sting has toured with as a soloist. Dominic Miller, Kenny Kirkland and Vinnie Colaiuta... all HUGE names, and they all toured with him. Was even more impressive live.
I want to start saying that I respect everyone's opinion... Now, I think that both Springsteen and Cash are great covers but i think Sting's version is way way better! First he wrote this amazing song, and then it's in 9/8, i mean, NINE/EIGHT!! The other two versions lose much style in 4/4...
That extra eight note is crucial for the pace and feel of the melody. As Vinnie said. Sting wanted it this way, but no one should notice. Anyway, if you play/sing this in 4/4 you remove the breathing space between the sentences. Consequently, both Springsteen and Cash played it at a slower tempo. Works OK just very different. I love Springsteens version, but nothing beats the unsentimental original by Sting.
ZiggyStardust97 there all different so it’s hard to pick just one. There all played different and to me all mean something different. Timing lyrics mood feeling. It’s the song that is great not just the artist
To everyone who thinks the Cash version is better and thinks that Sting sucks: Sting wrote the song first. If he didn't where would Johhny's version be? I like both, but I like Sting's better because of how seamlessly they play it in 9/8, This song must be a doozy on drums.
Есть огромное количество людей, которые даже близко не поймут, что здесь и о чем. Но те, кто в теме, не дадут этому видео кануть в лету. Это редкий шедевр. Уже где-то рядом с Моцартом.
Indeed you are not a musician, and in this case it shows. You may not like Sting's music but to denigrate his ability when you yourlsef are not a musician shows complete ignorance of the worst kind. A good number of Sting's songs are written in unusual time signatures, many of which are not easily detected. This is one mark of the man's musical genius (also see Rush for simlar ability). 3 songs on the Mercury falling album are not in 4/4, this is one with another 2 in 7/4.
@2LongGone Well colour me stupid. When I saw the Cash version, I naturally assumed that it was an older tune given how the dark lyrics were true to Johnny Cash's form. Thanks for enlightening me to that. Feeling pretty dumb now for not having a look at the origins of the song. Sting's treatment of the many cover's he's done has always amazed me. many pple like cash's better, bruce has his fans too... but Sting's one has more "space" for thinking n feeling, Sting is the only one who created the "space" for this song, and he knows how not to just over "expressing" his song.
@DynexGamers You're right. I think Sting's original version is too light to broach such a tragic topic whereas Johnny Cash knew how to create emotion and to give the song such intensity!
@socrates1818 I think he did write it. When I bought the album, he was listed as the composer for the song. Also, for what its worth, it says he wrote here at Wikipedia.
All of the RUclips videos of this song that show the lyrics get one word wrong ...rifle into the stream. Sting does not say stream, he says sheen. What does sheen mean in this song? A sheen is "an iridescent appearance on the surface of the water." It means water. Could be a stream, or a pond, or a lake or even a well. People think that Johnny Cash misread the lyrics or changed it. I don't think so. Cash did change salt lands to south lands
The eternal Kenny Kirkland on keyboards here - Sting stuck with Kenny from Dream Of The Blue Turtles in 1985 right until he passed into legend...check him out on Wikipedia - he has played with more legends than we've all had hot lunches!?
having known Cash's version for years, its really strange hearing the original! just...nothing suits the song...apart from the backing vocals in the chorus. ...its like sting wrote it, but couldnt/didnt know how to finish it and just made do...
Yeah, I always felt the original was FAR too upbeat-sounding for the actual content of the lyrics. The 9/8 works for it well, but Sting's musical style does not suit songs like this at all. Cash makes me want to cry. Springsteen makes me want to cry. Sting makes me insanely confused about whether I should be smiling or slitting my wrists.
@AngelofDeath199 Thats funny cause johnny cash liked stiungs song SO MUCH that he paid tribute to it by COVERING it.. Honestly, How dense can you possibly be *rolls eyes*

I don't think so. What you call a "goofy style" it' s a masterwork! a piece in 4/8 + 5/8 ... Hear it better and find the counterpointed voices of guitar and bass... and so on... Very good piece!
I have no idea how Sting can write something like this. I just know Cash did not touch this song until Sting lost patience and recorded it himself. Sting made the song, made it famous and then Cash realised he should probably make a version.
@KMatteKudasaiC I don't agree that Sting sucks either, but he didn't go, "Oh I like this a lot, I'll do a cover of this." He instead went to Rick Rubin, his producer, and said, "Give me something to do or I am going to die." When this was recorded, Cash was very sick and, respectfully, on his way out, as well as this being very recently after June Carter Cash had died. American IV was basically his way of preoccupying himself during the trying last months of his life.
@laconic94 The song is actually transcribed in 4/8 followed by 5/8. However, as you've already mentioned, the accents do fall on 3 and 8. So for me, its easier to break the song down in to four separate sections of 2/8, 3/8, 2/8 and 2/8.
Springsteen's version at Sting's Kennedy Honors tribute is 100 times better. Bruce acted the song out with so much emotion, even Sting must agree with me. Bruce is a storyteller and these lyrics lend themselves perfectly to be a heart-wrenching performance. The crowd went wild.
I know I'm over a decade late. But I agree with everything you said.
Sure it's a mess....but a beautiful one at that!
I much prefer Cash's version.
Sounds like 9/8 to me.

Vinnie Colaiuta is such a great drummer...
This band was, in my opinion, one of the best bands Sting has toured with as a soloist. Dominic Miller, Kenny Kirkland and Vinnie Colaiuta... all HUGE names, and they all toured with him. Was even more impressive live.

First he wrote this amazing song, and then it's in 9/8, i mean, NINE/EIGHT!!
The other two versions lose much style in 4/4...
agreed
Agreed! I love Cash's version, but the balls of Sting to play anything live in 9/8! That's astounding!
Sting makes me proud to be a Geordie. Love 9/8 - especially when it's so smooth and effortless.
I forgot all about this song/groove. Vinnie is so original in odd times.
Awesome! So difficult in 9/8, great drummer
I think it actually is 5/8 + 2/4. The rythm in the song is supposedly based on an Bulgarian aksak rhythm (a folk rythm) called Grancharsko horo.
@@hcpiano it's 9/8
shot rang out across the land.. vinnie hits the snare.. nice!
To everyone who thinks the Cash version is better and thinks that Sting sucks: Sting wrote the song first. If he didn't where would Johhny's version be? I like both, but I like Sting's better because of how seamlessly they play it in 9/8, This song must be a doozy on drums.

Well colour me stupid.
I naturally assumed this was just one such amazing treatment.
Thanks for the correction.
My mum thought he wrote Hurt too...
Sting created and sung it but i actually believed the johnny cash version like it really happened were as sting just sings i dont feel it.
Sting =awesome. Cash = awesome. Music isn't a sport.
jason metherel Springsteen = awesome
Drummers are always ruining math
This is a so much happier version than the one with Cash.
Such a beautiful, sad song. Performed like a Motown classic. Bizarre.
One and only Vinnie Colaiuta.
Sad to watch Kenny Kirkland(RIP) last tour before his tragic death. He was such a great player.
many pple like cash's better, bruce has his fans too... but Sting's one has more "space" for thinking n feeling, Sting is the only one who created the "space" for this song, and he knows how not to just over "expressing" his song.
That, people, is what a great band should sound like live. Vinnie, Dominic, Kenny and Sting. I loved that lineup.
Oh vinnie.
that beard... oh my gosh!
but anyway, Mr. Miller did a great job!
Incroyable ce Vinnie !
Que du bonheur.

Nice! I was there. My first concert. Mike and the Mechanics was the opening act.

Bruce does Sting’s song better than him…kinda like Hendrix singing Watchtower….
9/8 is indeed an odd signature. Try counting out the Dead's "The Eleven" :-)
@AngelofDeath199 Thats funny cause johnny cash liked stiungs song SO MUCH that he paid tribute to it by COVERING it.. Honestly, How dense can you possibly be *rolls eyes*
What a live performance. Phenomenal band. Horn section perfect. Guitar sound is superb. The drums! The best live version I've heard. Thank you.
6 people like the cash version better because they can't count

I'm no drummer, but I love Vinnie on this... he seems to play all round the beat and you can't find the 1.
To me, the one is easy; it’s the 8 beats behind it that I can’t keep up with.
It's in 9/8, so there's an extra 1/8 note.
@@averyellis you ain't alone brother
@bashissel Mercury Falling was a 1996 tour. I went to a show also. In 1991 Sting had just release Soul Cages, and toured briefly on that album.
Seen this played last night in Cork live. Damn, such a talented group of musicians. Was great fun watching people trying to nod their heads to this!!
Forget about trying to clap either.

Early one morning
With time to kill
I borrowed Jebb's rifle
And sat on the hill
I saw a lone rider
Crossing the plain
I drew a bead on him
To practice my aim
My brother's rifle
Went off in my hand
A shot rang out
Across the land
The horse, he kept running
The rider was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head
I set off running
To wake from the dream
My brother's rifle
Went into the stream
I kept on running
Into the salt lands
That's where they found me
My head in my hands
The sheriff he asked me
"Why had I run?"
And then it came to me
Just what I had done
And all for no reason
Just one piece of lead
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head
Here in the courthouse
The whole town was there
I see the judge
High up in his chair
"Explain to the courtroom
What went through your mind.
And we'll ask the jury
What verdict they find."
I felt the power
Of death over life
I orphaned his children
I widowed his wife
I ask no forgiveness
I wish I was dead
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head
I hung my head
Early one morning
With time to kill
I see the gallows
Upon a hill
And out in the distance
A trick of the brain
I see a lone rider
Crossing the plain*
And he'd come to fetch me
To see what they'd done
And we'd ride together
To Kingdom come
I ask for no mercy
For soon I'd be dead

I hung my head
I hung my head

Thank the lord for Johnny Cash.
im sorry but i just find johnny cashes version so much more emotional and meaningful
I think it's so cool when he hits the body of the bass along with the music accent!!
Definitivamente johnny cash...
I don't think so. What you call a "goofy style" it' s a masterwork! a piece in 4/8 + 5/8 ... Hear it better and find the counterpointed voices of guitar and bass... and so on...
Very good piece!
Vinnie invented the grooviest 9/8th beat right there. Iconic!
even thio this is stings song. i think this veriosn fucking sucks and lacks emotion so johnny cash now has made this his song. truth
Anyone think that the real Paul McCartney is sending these lyrics to him from beyond the grave? (that is if he is dead!?)
This is like some sick joke. How the hell did Sting write this, and how does Johnny Cash make every song he covers a classic of his own?
I have no idea how Sting can write something like this. I just know Cash did not touch this song until Sting lost patience and recorded it himself. Sting made the song, made it famous and then Cash realised he should probably make a version.
He did it again. Impossible combination of bassline and vocals.
He’s so chill about it too. Like the dude looks so comfortable up there doin his thing. Reminds me that human beings were meant to create. ☺️
Well... It's Johnny Cash's Song now... Sorry.

la parte del final con lo s harmonicos me ha dejado KO! (diferente al disco).
Gorgeous guitar line. More tastefully done here than on CD. Go Dominic.
Version? The original isn't a "version". Cash has the version.
