- I knew JT quite well in the mid-70's. He did quite a few gigs for me during that time at a club I had in Liverpool - A splendid chap! (Yeah I know .. the group is probably called the Kenny Wheeler John Abercrombie Quintet)
Line-up: John Taylor - piano; Kenny Wheeler-Trumpet; John Abercrombie - Guitar; Palle Danielsso - Bass; Peter Erskine - Drums

Kenny Wheelers playing is so special, nobody will ever sound like him. Dearly missed!
Two things. First, you are completely right. His album with Keith, Gnu High, was as important musically as Kind of Blue, taking nothing away from Miles. Second, John Taylor and John Abercrombie are also sorely missed.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful concert...these guys are some of the greatest musicians on earth.
One of my favorite groups. I have been listening to these guys for over thirty years. What a great journey. ECM super stars!!

This tune is called "Everybody's song but my own" by K.Wheeler. Although he had to change its name to: "Everybody owns my song but me". John Taylor still plays it nowadays, and still great!!!

Abercrombie was obviously ok in his own moniter but not a good level for the audience yet no one fixed it.

john taylor himself was agree about that . and if you read the book of erskine just few time ago released, you can read erskine also - obviously great drummer and great person too - wrote something about that and their too much misunderstanding playing together . just to compare watch the gordon beck quintet with tony oxley on drums and wheeler too . Same approach but best results ......
@@isivip1 well based on the Bob Hardy video posted of that group with Oxley i'd have to disagree on that point. i love Oxley - esp his work with Cecil Taylor and the Feel Trio is some of the most incredible improvised music i've ever heard, but in that group he rumbles way too much - maybe the studio recording is better but live he tends to dominate (based on that video). Erskine is a better and tighter drummer for this highly melodic, clean, polished ECM sound.
Did Erskine also pan the Widow in the Window and Small Ensemble group with Wheeler (same group with Holland on bass instead of Palle Danielsson)? i tend to rank him second compared with DeJohnette for awesome ECM drumming. he even played in a trio with Palle and John Taylor (You Never Know - 1993) which sounds beautiful, though of course it's safe and non-experimental.
@@scottr.looney1774 Its your point Scott . Amyway i "send " you to my previous reply of 2 years ago . He is not the drummer for ECM sound , his best work on that label its a masterpiece 2 cd set wheeler 's "large Ensemble " ( since his experience in a big band he is very good there ) but cant be compared with sublime jack 's playing in a wheeler small band - The greatest Erskine i listened it was on a large ensembles , wheater report and above all in 2 inner city recordings with george cables and Joe farrell , both 5tet or 6tet : there he his "HIM" at all , very original and distinctive , in one world : great . But so different than ecm sound . If you know those recordings Iwould like to know your opinion
@@scottr.looney1774 Another story is concerning Tony Oxley . Please listen him on a "regular " drum set before his avant garde free life . He is one of the greates drummer in the world of the late 60's early 70's . Not me only saying , just bill evans . His works during those times - even if of course very different - can be compared with the genious of tony Williams those times - It's true ( both Kenny wheeler and Tony coe told me that in person ) he plays often too much volume ... anyway I realize NOW , many years later , How lucky I been listened and talk in person with these great musicians , all so great despite our own choices on them . Always a pleasure talk with you Scott .
