1977 at 17 I bought Gnu High after I asked a very knowledgeable jazz record store owner who on ECM was "really" playing chord changes. I was obsessed with everything Wheeler on and off since. The most significant post Shorter composer I think.
My colleague told me several years ago that Kenny was his uncle. He comes from a family from Cape Brenton Nova Scotia. Since that conversation I have been a huge fan of his uncle. ❤
A truly great musician and a wonderful human being; he will be much missed. I'm sure Kenny's music will continue to thrill and influence others for years to come.
Kenny was a great trumpet player and a marvellous composer-it is hard to accept that he is no longer with us. I remember many great musical moments seeing him in concert and listening to his albums, and his radio broadcasts on the BBC. Thank you for uploading this rare interview with a shy and modest jazz genius.
I was incredibly fortunate to see Kenny play on numerous occasions including at his 65th anniversary tour with Norma Winstone and also with the Mike Gibbs orchestra. The latter he played the most majestic solo's I have ever witnessed and strangely I heard on the radio a celebrity of the time also describe that particular concert as Kenny being mind blowing. Even here in the latter stages of his life he is utterly majestic.
AMONG THE GREAT TRUMPETERS LIKE DIZZY, BROWN, MILES, TERRY, HUBBERT , MAYNARD -KENNY WHEELER WAS ALSO GREAT ,HIS TONE HAD MYSTERY IN IT AND IT TOOK YOU PLACES RIP KENNY WHEELER . SIMPLY LOVED HIM.

Kenny Wheeler is the "idea of north" in jazz. Every tone he played was pure soul, moving our souls. We 'll miss him a lot.
dear god... this made me break down in tears...

One word: beautiful.
The silence is looking for him...desperate and empty of magic.
