@@frednow Agreed. In a sense, despite a long and glorious career as a composer and a player, he's the unsung hero of all the great bands he played with. I will never forget seeing the 'Live in Copenhagen' concert from 1969 on National Geographic some 12-14 years ago. They took it down, it is somewhere on you tube, but edited, mixed up and in quite a mess. Anyway, Holland great composer, great musician!
I've seen this group four times and they delivered. I miss John Abercrombie he was always my to go to guitarist...he had it all may he rest in peace 🙏 🙏 ☮️ !!!!!
I studied this video so deeply while in Jazz college.... Every note and moment still in my soul. Got to see Abercrombie live. Love you all -George, Toronto
I can listen and watch this tune over and over, and every time I hear something new. John's non-linear playing is amazing, and I love Dave's driving bass line and Jack's incredible drumming- he supports the tune with both strength and subtlety. I was so fortunate to hear John live several times in addition to following his music for several decades. Miss him...
Really laid back and totally into the groove. He finds ways to accent the 1, the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 or whatever number, including anything in between those numbers, and always makes it sound right. It's as if he defines the rhythm and the meter, and can do anything to it, without ever losing track of where he is. Most of the time I don't really understand what he does, but amazingly still find it very listenable and totally enjoyable.
Yeah, he's strangely underrated or something. Can't really place how he doesn't seem to have had the accolades as other guitar innovators, but he's definitely one of the greats in guitar history.
@@ahambrahmasmi108Let's not fall into the trap of calling artists underrated just because you were not aware of them. John has always been a big deal among jazz guitarists and fans since his debut album in '75.
@@michaelvaladez6570 HD is one way to put it yeah) on top of the whole thing, my buddy and I who were transcending were asked by the organ player with the group to get his wife high on the green. It was really quite the wonderful experience!😁♥️

I keep coming back to this video again and again. Must have heard it fifty times, at least. Still can't figure out exactly how or what Jack is doing to make it all happen.
Edit: John Abercrombie, what a genius! Three years down the line, I feel blessed. Having discovered this giant late in my life, actually a few years efter he passed in 2017. Here with my long time favourite drummer Mr. DeJohnette and bassist Dave Holland, whom I didn't get at first. It took a long time to recognize that his playing was not at all trivial, much like that of Charlie Haden, but different of course. Today I got lost, again, in John's masterpiece album Timeless. It happens a lot these days... lost in space and time, each time reluctant to snap out of it and accept the real world as it is. IMHO, this album is about as good as it gets. The interplay of Abercrombie and organist Jan Hammer, is just out of this world, and then Jack DeJohnette on the drums... I love Jack, to me there is no one who can, or could, touch him. Not even Tony Williams or Elvin Jones. I feel sorry for contemporary jazz musicians, because there's just so much great music of the past 60-70 years that I simply can't find the urge to check out the new crowd. There's the odd exception to that rule of course, but generally speaking I don't.
The records these guys did in the 70s were very precious to me- soul food. Actually, all the DeJohnette records from the 70s were stunning; some of my faves!
Am very amazed by John's 🎶 he is amazing am in to rock and metal but I was always interested in learning about jazz heard johns work on the radio one night not long ago and was stunned! By his ability great master of jazz!!
Fantastic! As I was here listening to John play I could hear influences of John McLaughlin or the other way around. It's pretty obvious but I am surprised that I never made this connection before. Love them both!!!
Abercrombie is out of this world. He truly isn't pigeon holed by any particular style or form or other guitarist. If he is following any particular guitarist he is probably playing in a cellar on Pluto. He is truly from another world. I just wish I could have seen him live.
Listen to "Timeless" from 1973. The title song & the album are must-hears for newer & older ears. New Directions also had a great couple of ECM releases w/ Abercrombie, DeJohnette, Eddie Gomez or Dave Holland (bass) & Lester Bowie, of The Art Ensemble of Chicago, on trumpet. Saw them once live in Eugene. Outstanding show.
They were really a jazz supergroup. I think Abercrombie was overshadowed by being a contemporary of John McLaughlin - undeservedly. He did fantastic work under his own brand and tons of collaborations. Fine composer. He is on so many of my favorite recordings.
I agree entirely. First time I heard him, I thought “This is nifty, but it’s really just vest-pocket Mahavishnu.” This impression wasn’t helped by having Jan Hammer on the album. It took a while before I realized how wrong I was.
These guys create quantum warps in space/time when they play. I'm not sure what dimension I was in, but I happily settled in for the ride. Better than drugs.
One of the great trios for me & Mr. Abercrombie was so underrated. Very original player. JD's drum kit always looks like it's just been thrown together if you know what I mean. Like he wanted to made it harder to play as some sort of challenge.
@markmarktarmann I saw Jack DeJohnette with Herbie Hancock. Amazing show... while Herbie's technique is incredible I found myself transfixed with DeJohnette and his drumming for almost the entire show!
Abercrombie has a pretty varied sound on the guitar. I agree there are some similarities to Sco here, but his approach to melody is pretty different, and he isn't as dedicated to the gritty rock tones that Sco has favored for a long time.

John Abercrombie.....greatest, most lyrical player, amazing composer, will live forever in my world. Love you John!
All true, but let it not go unsaid that Dave Holland wrote this great tune.
@@frednowKind of Ornetteish.
@@deanronson6331yeah, I can hear that. But to me it sounds more like another tune of Holland’s, Conference of the Birds

Apart from some wicked good solos with Miles Davis on Cellar Door sessions, DeJohnette's long, inventive solos with Gateway are my faves.
I saw them in the 70's, at one point Jack DeJohnette came out from his kit and played killer piano, surprised me.
