Benefit Concert for the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock NY ~ 1981 1. Arrival (Marilyn Crispell, p; Howard Johnson, sax) 2. Left Jab (Ed Blackwell, d; Baikida Carroll, t; Julius Hemphill, sax; Marilyn Crispell, p) 3. We Are (Karl Berger, balaphon; Nana Vasconcelos, talking drum; Collin Walcott, tabla; Aiyb Dieng, talking drum; Ed Blackwell, d) 4.Broadway Blues (Jack DeJohnette, d; Pat Metheny, g; Miroslav Vitous, b; Dewey Redman, sax) 5.The Song is You (Anthony Braxton, vocal) 6.Impressions (Anthony Braxton, sax; Chick Corea, p; Jack DeJohnette, d; Miroslav Vitous, b) 7.Stella By Starlight (Chick Corea, p; Lee Konitz, sax) 8.All Blues (Jack DeJohnette, d; Pat Metheny, g; Miroslav Vitous, b; Chick Corea, p; Lee Konitz, sax; Anthony Braxton, sax) Broadway Blues is a song written by Ornette Coleman for his New York Is Now! album released in released in 1968 on Blue Note featuring John Coltrane's former bandmates, drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Jimmy Garrison, and by tenor sax player Dewey Redman.
Exceptional rhythm section in this concert, Jack DeJohnette (some of his best playing) and Miroslav Vitous. DeJohnette is the standout in this whole show, some of the best playing of his career here. Impressions has one of Braxton's best solos on Impressions, wild in places yet controlled. Metheny has an excellent solo on Broadway Blues as well as a great bowed solo by bassist Miroslav Vitous. Chick Corea has a unique and unexpected introduction to Stella by Starlight, duo with Lee Konitz. His playing a little too busy for Konitz but there is some very interesting and creative interplay. Konitz has an intimacy and soulfulness here. and Konitz changes to a much less warm nasally tone for All Blues. Dejohnette explosive on this and Corea very percussive. Vitous takes another one of his fine bowed solos.
Marylin Crispell anyone? Tons of commentaries and no one mentions the only woman on stage, namely who's definitely one of the most amazing piano players of the 20th. That's a shame
For those curious about personnel, this is from David Meeker's fantastic resource "Jazz on the Screen: A Jazz & Blues Filmography" (p.255, copyright 2009): 1. "Arrival". Howard Johnson, baritone sax; Marilyn Crispell, piano. 2. "Left jab". Baikida Carrol, trumpet; Julius Hemphill, tenor sax; Marilyn Crispell, piano; Attilio Zanchi, acoustic double bass; Ed Blackwell, drums. 3. "We are". Karl Berger, balaphon; Collin Walcott, tabla; Ed Blackwell, tap drums; Aiyb Dieng, Nana Vasconceles, talking drums. 4. "Solo". Nana Vasconceles, berimbau. 5. "Broadway blues". Dewey Redman, tenor sax; Pat Metheny, guitar; Miroslav Vitous, acoustic double bass; Jack DeJohnette, drums. 6. "The song is you" by Oscar Hammerstein II, Jerome Kern. Anthony Braxton, vocal. 7. "Impressions" by John Coltrane. Anthony Braxton, alto sax; Chick Corea, piano; Miroslav Vitous, acoustic double bass; Jack DeJohnette, drums. 8. "Stella by starlight" by Ned Washington, Victor Young. Lee Konitz, alto sax; Chick Corea, piano. 9. "All blues" by Miles Davis. Lee Konitz, Anthony Braxton, alto sax; Chick Corea, piano; Pat Metheny, guitar; Miroslav Vitous, acoustic double bass; Jack DeJohette, drums. Recorded at the Woodstock Jazz Festival, New York, on 19th September 1981.
I know im asking randomly but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost the login password. I would love any tips you can give me.
@Reece Pedro thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
anthony braxton's solo on impressions was fucking cosmic... sounds like he transcended to a higher plane at some points in that. truly a performance that honors coltrane's legacy
From 23:42 to 34:32 This has to be a one of those greatest few moments in the history of jazz, where the improvisation and interpretion approaches and gets near the spiritual level of John Coltranes musical dimentions, but while at the same time accomplishing to manifest its own personality and the soul onto, and within, the structural base level of the foundations of jazz music. And also arguably the best 10 minutes and 50 seconds I've almost ever in my life spent on concentrating on any kind of waveform-based art performance
I 100% agree. Braxton's compositions are good but i feel his style is shown at its peak in band situations like this. His playing is just so visceral and confident to an extent Ive never heard before. Also, the entire rest of the lineup playing with him including chick and dejohnette makes the experience even better.
Wow! Didn't even recognize him at first! Blessed to have had a chance to see him multiple times. Had tickets for the show last year that was put on hold because of the covid. Hoping that I'm able to get to see him at least one more time.
I just stumbled on this. It was one of the best concerts i've been to, & that's saying a lot (I've been to 3662)! Was my 38th show (15th jazz) Was on a soccer field in the actual town of Woodstock, NY on 9/19/81. Poured for 4 hours after it was supposed to start @ noon. Ended at like midnight. Spent a couple of hours in a dugout after sitting under the soundboard for awhile until it got too wet. Stood a couple of feet from Chick Corea while he was interviewed. Even remember getting a burrito in town.
That's who I thought it was. I loved the people in the audience being confused about the snare hits in the head of that first tune. It was beats 1 and 4 each time but the first measure is in 4/4 and the second measure in 5/4. I loved the snare sound. I think DeJohnette used the same kit?
Also for those of you who don't know Chick and Braxton with Dave Holland and Berry Altschal had a seminal energy liberation unit called " Circle" about 1970. Made at least one side.
What a line up, sublime & so raw!! Vitous is one of the very few bass players who knew how to bow the instrument & make it talk. Almost like a cellist in places.
! ! WOW ! ! Also take care in listening to the cadenza ( . . towards the end of the tune . . ) in Lee Konitz` playing: a seldom heard symbiosis between a musician and his instrument!
This is Jack's best sound, IMO, along with the 602 setup with Miles. The Sound Creations were far more complex sounding. The Sonor Phonics always kill, as well. Jack stopped playing this 4-piece kind of setup almost a decade earlier, so it's fascinating to hear his 1981 conception on a standard kit.
J.DeJohnette, C.Corea, P.Metheny, A.Braxton, L.Konitz, M.Vitous & others -full concert - (on Woodstock Jazz Festival - 1981) Other musicians : Dewey Redman, Nana Vasconcelos, Baikida Carroll, Collin Walcott, Aiyb Dieng, Ed Blackwell, Howard Johnson and Marilyn Crispell. Thank you for this precious document
The Guess the Song between Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz with Chick Corea and Hal Galper looking on! Priceless. Historically interesting too. Lee liked to sing and he loved The Song Is You.
That's what happens when you create the right atmosphere for the musicians to express themselves in complete freedom : creativity, genius and fire !! I love Anthony Braxton's scat on "The song is you", smooth and boppish :). Thanks for posting such a treasure, Francesco.
+MARCILIO FERNANDES ... Nana was a miracle, I mourn his lost. But we are lucky to have so many of these creative musicians alive: Konitz, Braxton, Metheny, Vitous, deJohnette, Corea, ... never dreamt of seen all of them together, this must be heaven.
What do you people though of the man playing at 10:50? He's the brazilian great percussionist Naná Vascoselos, and that instrument its called Berimbau, a very traditional instrument here in Brazil that is most used in a sort of musical, dacing and fighting art called Capoeira. It's very curious and if some one wanna know more about it, just ask me :) Naná rules!

indeed! braxton developing on trane ... that nice and amazing

Don't forget the great Marilyn Crispell on piano.

Well isn't that Nana Vasconcelos on the Berimbau? 10:50
Wouldn't forget him, either.
Anthony Braxton OMG soooo awesome!!!!

Greatest drummer of all time.

jeez bro, write a book.
You keep an actual count of the EXACT number of shows you've been to?
That's the great New Orleans drummer, Mr. Edward Blackwell, in the colorful cap back there. Not too many videos of this influential drummer. Thanks!
That's who I thought it was. I loved the people in the audience being confused about the snare hits in the head of that first tune. It was beats 1 and 4 each time but the first measure is in 4/4 and the second measure in 5/4. I loved the snare sound. I think DeJohnette used the same kit?
I'm sure they were Jack's drums and Blackwell used them as the opening band.
Also for those of you who don't know Chick and Braxton with Dave Holland and Berry Altschal had a seminal energy liberation unit called " Circle" about 1970. Made at least one side.
Jazz album of the year, just great. Not for the uninitiated.
CIrcle was an incredible band. The LP ARC and the fantastic Live 2fer with Braxton.
@@WilliamBrownNYC Love Chick the most in this style!

Circle was incredible. Live in Paris double LP will blow you away. Really liked the trio LP A.R.C. as well.
