When I first heard this, I was like. This is a catchy song let me bookmark this and listen to it again when I get home, then when I got home and listened again, I understood the lyrics.

However, assuming that this is the late 1800's, 30 dollars is about 240 or more by our standards...so if the poor thing is doing it every night, she'd be quite wealthy.

She "goes from ship to ship"... She provided service to multiple crews of what I assume to be large ships. That's probably only a couple of bucks per person.

I love the Decemberists! It's probably cause they write songs set in Victorian times and that's my favorite time period for video games and such (like Fallen London)

That was awesome...I know there are some dark songs out there, but the world is missing out on one of the darkest song, but also one with the most satisfying ending, look it up, Sveti Bes by Marchelo. Sucks that it is in Serbian, I can't translate it into English without ruining the literary work of art that are it's lyrics, maybe someone can...
I introduced my partner to The Decemberists by playing this and Mariner's Revenge and now she's convinced this guy has some vendetta against sailors. XD

As incredibly morbid as this entire song is, I have a strong feeling that this is exactly a skit that Robot Chicken would have done. Love the song and the comic, but this is definitely comparable to shock comedy. Also, nothing shocks me after watching the end of Requiem for a Dream.

So today while I was eating breakfast I asked, "I wonder if there exists a song that can make massive, filthy gangbangs and desperate prostitution to feed one's family, catchy and fun to sing along to." To which my grandmother said, "I doubt it.". So naturally, when I stumbled upon this song I played it for her and well...I think it stirred up some memories she didn't want to revisit. I suppose all those diverse aunts and uncles make a lot more sense now.

wtf. I heard this song years ago on the audio system at a job. I was too busy working to make out the lyrics, but I remembered the tune. Finally, today, I grab my violin and pluck it out for Google to identify. To my surprise, it finds the song. To my horror, it's basically about sexual assault. Okay, prostitution, but wow. I had no idea. And they were playing this over the speakers on my old job. Still like the tune.
