This whale was a (check out this creative name) toothed whale, obviously based off of Moby Dick, which was a sperm whale. @Artur Janz: This was incredibly well done. Great job. Loved it. I will say though, that "rake" in this context doesn't mean that he used a rake. A rake is an old term for someone who constantly does bad stuff in his life.
Thanks, mate! Yeah, at the time that I've made the video, I didn't know it, since it took less than two weeks to make it, and I've learned a month later the meaning of rake xD But, well, I like to look this as pun :B
Artur Janz But a roustabout is a deckhand so it could make perfect sense that he was using a rake for his work aboard the ship while also still being a rake in life.
Well, I'm not sure where you looked up that definition, but it's not quite accurate. A roustabout is a general term for a blue-collar type worker that works in rough conditions, also called a roughneck. Sometimes it is used disparagingly for people that don't have much of a life and have a tendency to go from job to job learning no real skills. Given the context of this song, this is most likely true. That, and the artist even admitted it was a goof up. Still, great art and stylization. Well fitting and well done.
I see nothing about specifically about a ship or shipyard in that definition. However, look at number 4. That's what this song was saying about the character.
@6:50 Look at the difference between the captain's face on the left, and the orphan's face on the right. The captain is actually of this world, and fears death, whereas the boy on the right is no longer human; he's just a walking force of nature-- the living embodiment of revenge and death. The captain thrashes around spluttering salt water, and the orphan just sinks silently into the black depths with only one thought on his mind. There are all these great little scenes throughout this whole video, but this one is one of my favorites.
Revenge may be a dish served cold, and there may be two graves involved- but a young man robbed of a good father is certainly something to be avoided, now if you'll excuse me I think there's a possum to go look at at this late hour and I rather like nature watching. But yeah screw that guy.
the length and increasing speed of the ending instrumental almost makes it feel like he's enacting his revenge in an almost frantic yet incredibly long and painful method, ramping up higher and higher until the music flatlines and the captain is dead
Very threatening and dark atmosphere in your video, fits the song perfectly. Great artwork matches a great song. I'd love to see more! Keep it up, cheers.
@Tabun 7668 "A fin is a thin component or appendage attached to a larger body or structure. " So there is double meaning of fin - the end and fin - part of boat/fish ;)
I love recontextualizing the whole song by making it so the Captain is already dead. The orphan's already lost his mind and is just spinning a fiction about his childhood trauma as he slowly starves or gets digested.
this song reminds me of Moby Dick, like an allusion. The boy, like the famed Ahab, is out for revenge because the whale, his father, took his limb, his mother, and, like Ahab and the Whale, revenge consumes his life
It wasn't his father, his father died and his mom was a fresh widow. He took advantage of his mom and gave her consumption (TB) and then piled all of his debts on them causing the land lords (magistrate) to evict them. She then dies of consumption and he spends 15 years homeless before joining the church to sustain himself while he found a way to get revenge. Eventually, he joined a band of privateers (pirates) and likely told them what had happened to him so they chased after the fucker with the intent of giving the lad his revenge.
Drfate 786 damn those privateers seem like a hell of a good foster family, I wish they’d just chucked the guy in the sea and went on to have adventures and all

Daniel Fitzpatrick Yes but his story ends in the belly of a whale, he doesn't get to have any life afterwards so any guilt that may have been spared is forfeited.
+Ben van eyk I agree. But he could also have changed his path himself. Just because your mother asks something of you (when you know she lost her mind already) doesn't mean you have to live your life according to it. But he hardens his heart even to the point that he doesn't even think about anything else. He throws his own life away in order of his mom...
+HolandaChiquita it wasn't just his mother's order. He wanted to kill man who took everything they had, and his most beloved person, his mum. He might have decided to revenge life of his family on his own, but the fact that it was order from his mother make his goal almost sacred.

Like what kind of description did the "penitent whaler" give that would so unerringly describe the roustabout after 15 years? How do we know he has the right guy? How does he know he has the right guy? Like...what if the "captain" at the end is just some poor whaling captain whose entire crew and livelihood was swallowed by a whale, leaving him as the sole survivor, except there's this half-mad, deranged sailor claiming he was the man who wrong his mother 16 years ago? So miraculous to somehow have survived the whale attack, only to be tortured to death in the belly of a whale.
Or maybe the sailor was killed and he hallucinated surviving and killing the captain right before he died,as he was getting chewed up by the whale, just because that was his sole purpose in life?
Well being a song (and not a novel) and limited by meter and whatnot, it likely didn't (couldn't?) give all the details that may have been present in the protagonist's experience. Perhaps he questioned the Penitent Sailor further? Perhaps his passed mother gave him some hint? Regardless, Meloy's writing is so descriptive that this art is so easily conjured to mind. I think that is a moot point for the mariner. At this point he is so consumed by his desire for revenge It probably doesn't even matter if it is the right guy or not. He's seeing what he wants to see in his lust for revenge.
I heard this song for the first time an hour ago, then I googled the lyrics, and then I ran to RUclips hoping to find something exactly like this. Thank you. You've made my day. Really.
Man.. this song hits too close to home. My father was a sailor, much like in this song, he was a bastard that wronged my mother, dissapearing after all the shit he put her through. She's luckily still alive, but damaged, so my hatred for my own father is great. Ended up working offshore aswell, only because i have a love for the open seas. I hope i meet the bastard one day, just not in the belly of a whale.
ViciousEmperor doesn't hit close to home for me but i did have a fk'd up father myself... :/ unfortunately ended up going on longer then it should and some days i wonder if it's really stopped or not. Kinda drives you over the edge and with everything happening now (especially in Australia) makes things quiet hard So despite not being a sailor or having much related to this story exactly it does give flashbacks...
@@traceyjacobsen8544 I didn't see this before now. I feel you man.. the sins of our fathers stay with us for the rest of our lives. It's up to us not to carry their crap over to next generations. I hope both our accursed father's get what's coming to them one day, if not, that's also up to us..
I can’t believe I’m just now seeing this. I love how each frame fits with the music…it’s like a visual representation of the sound, rhythm, tempo, pitch, etc. Very impressive.
Usually I prefer songs that change, that have some kind of especial dynamic. This one basically has 1 verse structure and a bridge and somehow manages to hold my attention more than anything else I listen to.
Love the song and I love this animation better than the other one with 6M views honestly. Its a very dark story and the other animation is kinda cartoony. This dark comic style you did gave it a very ominous feel. Well done
Have you heard of the Watchmaker's Apprentice? It is a song by the Clockwork Quartet. Lovely, dark, steampunk song. These two songs sound quite similar. Not sure if you want to animate it, but you'll likely enjoy it regardless.

I like that in the beginning of the song u don’t realize that the singer is going to attack the man listening to him and it could be an innocent sea shanty or something. Of course in this he doesn’t look too nice and it gives it away a bit, but that’s a tiny nitpick in a comment section of positivity. Keep up the good work! Subscribed
"This song tickles my insanity".... perfect. I grin like a madman, literally, when I listen to this. You might enjoy The Watchworker's Apprentice by The Clockwork Quartet. It gets a similar grin from me.
Jacob Lucas If I could make a video I would have the general scene of the song play out interspersed with a vision of the Apprentice riding off in a carriage, smiling softly as he watches Mr. McArthur being dragged away by the police. After he is drug away, the Apprentice's gaze lingers a moment, then he turns away as he leans back into the cushioning. All we see is the hint of a smile from the shadows as he raps on the ceiling of the carriage with his cane and the driver snaps his whip to spur the horses on.
I absolutely love this song, and it would not be same without this superb video!! I don't think I could ever get sick of watching this. Mr Janz, you are my hero!!
This is probably one of the best music videos I've seen in a long time. Excellent artwork! Bonus points because I'm having kind of a shitty day and this song always puts me in a good mood.
I loved this animation. I heard the song recently and I wanted to hear it again, and you hit the spot nicely. I'm glad you left the ending as FIN, since it has a bit of "Lady or the Tiger" feel to it. Something just don't need explicit detail. Especially since if you think about it, the frenzy that the musicians left did NOT fill in that detail, since the mother's refrain was not recalled at that point. Don't let anyone tell you different!
Love this song. But a thought.... this is some bad parenting. The mother makes bad choices and then asks her child to throw his life away for revenge. Only a thought as i have relisten to this over the many years since i discovered it and it has sunk in
A comment from wowhead brought me here. I REALLY have no proper words to describe how much i enjoyed this masterpiece. My friend, whomever you are... Please keep this going!! It was really breathtaking!!!!
I have watched this video many times throughout the last few years. It is the best user-made music video I've ever seen and one of the best videos in RUclips.
+Artur Janz I wouldn't hesitate for a second to pay money for a print version. The art matches the grim darkness of the song perfectly. Truly a masterpiece.
Cause we all know; the second that music picks up, that 'kid' raised the first fist, and thus began a beating only one other person managed to deliver in the world; Kratos bludgeoning Zeus to death.
I like to believe the last words he heard were "Have fun being digested in a whale's stomach alone." Before he killed himself, because that would be a terrible punishment in all honestly.
I like to imagine the last words are him singing what his mother told him (matches up with the instrumental), as he does exactly what the song says. Breaks his fingers, cuts off his clothes, then, as you said, either leaves him to die or stabs him to death.
I'd say (as bena lena said) he said what his mother said to the letter I image him in a crazed state repeating the words over and over while beating him up then binding him, breaking his hands beyond belief, tearing his clothes off and probably buried him in the guts of the whale alive and left him there And then he just talked to himself till he died Or ate the whale inside out?
People are like "she told her son to murder someone brutally holy crap" She lost her mind in the previous verse because the man she loved abused and abandoned them, of course she told her kid to get revenge
Yo, the Decemberists deserve this to be their music video for this song. No shit amazing job. The song gives feels enough, let alone your spot on illustrations.
I have watched your video so many times over and over because the combination of the genius of The Decemberists and your artwork work so well together, I think.
Gazirra1 well fantasized most likely unless it was intended to be the wrong guy or left to our imagination Realistically he probably would of gotten the wrong guy... at 3 to remember the guy would be pretty impressive unless someone told him what happened to him and by who So then again he probably was lucky and got the right guy in the end i guess
elliyana Williams if you think about it realistically he likely did Because he had gone insane from revenge at this point and so he acted on his revenge even if the survivor wasn't the guy who left him and his mother in debt
Hell yes! This is great! It's hard not to imagine this story unfolding when you really listen to it, and your comics almost perfectly match up with my own visions. I always imagined a kerosene lantern in the whale, the interlude would have also included a target practicing and scaring the sailors montage, and the final instrumental includes a torture montage. Regardless, you captured the dark and twisted nature of the fellow perfectly, and I applaud you.

Man.. this song hits too close to home.
Kinda drives you over the edge and with everything happening now (especially in Australia) makes things quiet hard
So despite not being a sailor or having much related to this story exactly it does give flashbacks...
Couple of lyical mistakes, however this is absolutely fantastic!

How ironic.
Quite.
Lachlan McCormick, In his great froth and ecstasy serving his cause he fell upon the very sword he ran to parry.
`egdymc darnThat didn't rhyme at all >:(
Why do I always have such a strong feeling of grief when I watch this?
I just love the art in this and the transitions from frame to frame, it's great
A masterpiece! The smile of pure insanity in the end as he fulfills his revenge is chilling
The addition of the graphic novel makes the song just that much better. Also great job to the creator of the video.
Well done
Arnott Potter this is so flattering ❤️ I really like that version, but it’s great to read that you like my video. Thank you so much!
" so lean close, and i will whisper the last words you'll hear... "
" ... Hey! VSauce, Michael here "
Hello, everybody! If you liked the video above, take a look at my brand new animated comics :D

Have you heard of the Watchmaker's Apprentice? It is a song by the Clockwork Quartet. Lovely, dark, steampunk song. These two songs sound quite similar. Not sure if you want to animate it, but you'll likely enjoy it regardless.
Artur Janz , hi artur, anywhere i can reach you through email?
This reminded me of another song of theirs... The Doctor's Wife. I would love to see an animated version of that song in this style
Artur Janz U did an awesome job with this dude. The imagery and the illustrations are epic as hell. I love this song so much. Thanks for this.
@@thebullfight9394 I’m really sorry mate, somehow I didn’t receive a notification on this one. If you still want to message me, feel free to reach me via my Instagram arturjanz.art
Subscribed
Great animation, Artur. I've watched this several times. It really does the song justice.
its been 10 years and this is so nice!! Excellent job, very fitting with the vibes, I hope you've found success!
I see none of my favorite comments for this song. Oh well I guess I will be the reposter then.
This song tickles my insanity.
"This song tickles my insanity".... perfect. I grin like a madman, literally, when I listen to this.
You might enjoy The Watchworker's Apprentice by The Clockwork Quartet. It gets a similar grin from me.
ArisztidZ
Two of my favourite songs, this and the Watchworker's Apprentice.
Nice
And makes us lust for revenge until the very end when our thirst is quenched
I absolutely love this song, and it would not be same without this superb video!! I don't think I could ever get sick of watching this. Mr Janz, you are my hero!!
ohh, you're too kind, AZ! Thanks! You guys are my heroes!
First time i heard this song was this video, and this video really makes the songs words stronger.
Only a thought as i have relisten to this over the many years since i discovered it and it has sunk in
I really can't stop watching this, your artwork is fantastic and it fits together so well with the song like tetris pieces. Awesome job!
A comment from wowhead brought me here.
I REALLY have no proper words to describe how much i enjoyed this masterpiece. My friend, whomever you are... Please keep this going!! It was really breathtaking!!!!
I agree, this was amazing.
*Claps* That is all I can say. I'm at a loss of speech at how amazing this video is. ★★★★★
I like to think that boy survived and became Captain K'nuckles from Flapjack.
So absolutely wonderful!!! I'm blown away. Have you received any feedback from anyone from the decemberists? I'm sure they would be so happy!
Thanks! Well, one or two years ago I've sent a tweet to Collin, and he replied with a compliment xD
+Artur Janz this should be the official music video
I have watched this video many times throughout the last few years. It is the best user-made music video I've ever seen and one of the best videos in RUclips.
I'm so happy to read this. It's been almost 10 years since I made this video and this kind of comment always warm my heart
the end always gets me
I like how the separate panels can display the image of one environment. Dave Gibbons would be proud.
nice graphics mate well done .
Thus song and comic is one of my favorite things ever
Holy shit dude you're a God amongst meer mortals..
I like how girzzled and dirty they look. It’s primal like revenge itself.
Please someone tell me there is a printed version of the comic. I need it!
Good morning mister! Since it was a non-profit work, I never made a print version. But maybe someday, if Decemberists give me permission :3
+Artur Janz I believe they will if you ask them and show the drawings. :)
+Artur Janz I wouldn't hesitate for a second to pay money for a print version. The art matches the grim darkness of the song perfectly. Truly a masterpiece.
I love ballads for their perfect cruelty. Your work perfectly shows all his anger and desire of revenge.
Colin Meloy is a master of the craft of story-telling through song...only one as good I can think of is Bob Dylan
Was really hoping that the comic would have what the original music video lacked; the whaler getting his just deserts from the child scorned.
I'd say (as bena lena said) he said what his mother said to the letter
I image him in a crazed state repeating the words over and over while beating him up then binding him, breaking his hands beyond belief, tearing his clothes off and probably buried him in the guts of the whale alive and left him there
And then he just talked to himself till he died
Or ate the whale inside out?
People are like "she told her son to murder someone brutally holy crap"
She lost her mind in the previous verse because the man she loved abused and abandoned them, of course she told her kid to get revenge
honestly some the illustrations are creepier after reading Uzumaki
Uzumaki?
@Binomi89 thanks for the tip
Yo, the Decemberists deserve this to be their music video for this song. No shit amazing job. The song gives feels enough, let alone your spot on illustrations.
im killing the repeat button...
Ah thats why it's got 55 stab wounds...
This is so cool! You did such an amazing job on this!
GENIAL :D
I have watched your video so many times over and over because the combination of the genius of The Decemberists and your artwork work so well together, I think.
I know it's implied that he does, but does he actually get the right guy?
Gazirra1 well fantasized most likely unless it was intended to be the wrong guy or left to our imagination
Realistically he probably would of gotten the wrong guy... at 3 to remember the guy would be pretty impressive unless someone told him what happened to him and by who
So then again he probably was lucky and got the right guy in the end i guess
I love the effect at the end where the flame flickers slowly. Such a small piece but so powerful.
7:29 So lean in close and I will whisper the last words you'll hear; "OwO"
NO NO GOD NO
Fin >:( *YOU DID THAT ON PURPOSE DIDNT YOU!!*
Imagine if he killed the wrong person-
elliyana Williams if you think about it realistically he likely did
Because he had gone insane from revenge at this point and so he acted on his revenge even if the survivor wasn't the guy who left him and his mother in debt
this is practically my kind of art style and I love what you've done with it
Кто после ШЫМа???
whoever did this deserves a huge present
Кто здесь после нового трека Шыма, лайк :)
+Ренат Садыков У Шыма лучше получилось
оригинал - сказка
