Heard this on the radio yesterday for the first time. had to find it... great song.... it took me a while to figure out why it has the 80s sound. Its the synthesizer!!
@TheDecemberists I just found you guys this year, and it’s only January! And I just found this song for my very first time, too! It’s a great one! Hi, guys, my name’s Vinny. I just had my 19th birthday last year. Considering that I was born in early December, you could all say I’m basically “allied to the winter.” But “don’t you get clever,” or I’m “gonna leave you all severed!” You guys are an AWESOME band.
@Matthew Burrell I just found The Decemberists this year, and it’s only January! And I just found this song for my very first time, and you’re right! It’s a great one!
I love this song so much... I have listened to this and the Crane Wife album non-stop all week. It helps sooth the stomach bug that I've been dealing with.
I was brought here from The Apology Line Podcast from Wondery, and then I had to listen to the rest of this album as well. I also started listening to the Decemberists in high school (I was 16 then, I’m 31 now) when a boyfriend made me a wonderful mix tape that changed my life forever that included The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, Elliot Smith, and The Shins.
LOL You clearly didn't grow up during the '80s. This is a very '60s aesthetic. Look at Beatles songs of the mid- to late '60s. This has zero to do with the '80s.
Decemberists still putting out great music. These folks are among the best in rock n roll. I love this new song.... looking towards the album release...
When I first heard it, I thought "well alright, it is different, but I still like it". That was 30-something plays ago. I am in love with this song now. Been watching these guys change over the last decade, and I can't get enough of them.
I am a relatively recent fan of the Decemberists, so I am not wedded to their traditional sound. However, as a big fan of New Wave in the 80s when I was in college, I am excited by this! I saw The Bodeans and the Violent Femmes on a double bill at Milwaukee’s Summerfest in 1986, and this track sounds like a blend of the two.
Just curious, but what part of this song feels "so Decemberists" to you? Like, it's not a bad song - it's fine - but I honestly can't think of one single quality it possesses that resembles their earlier work.
Andrea Pisani huh, that's strange,I thought this was quite a bit different than their usual, they're more folkish/ acoustic than 80's Atari/the Fixx sound, but ok,everyone has their own opinion
DrMrGrunge, you're absolutely right,I thought the same, nothing like the Decemberists,360 different, this is total 80's pop and Atari mixed,I didn't even know it was them when I heard it on 103.1 WRNR
The Decemberists are evolving. Is it 'The Crane Wife '? No. Are the changes and new sounds exciting and awesome? Yes. Case closed. I am on board for the journey, Colin and friends!
Bands cant win, if they stay the same sound, they are a one trick pony, if they evolve and take in new influences they are a sell out. I love this song!
This band is my favorite, and this song is a chilling warning of the violence we faced under Trump as LGBT Americans are still not valued as humans. Neither are immigrants, or most other minority groups, be they religious like Jewish or Muslim, even if you were raised Christian against your will, or a skin color like Black, Asian, or if you're disabled, or poor. Or any mix of what I've already mentioned, or native from one of the reservations. We don't even report on Crimes against non citizens on TV in this country, and before anyone get on my case for bringing up politics, or accuses me of "virtue" signaling... our lives aren't political. You're the ones pushing that claim, so kindly stfu if you think my life is political, because it's not.
The amount of people commenting in surprise of the overt political overtones is killing me. You are shocked that an indie band from Portland is anti Trump? You must not get out much.
Wow! Yeah, these guys aren’t surprising In that way. I would love to see a centrist or conservative band come out of there. I find it lame that so many artists fall in line with the same old trope. Artist doesn’t have to equal left leaning, but it seems to mostly be the case these days.
A centrist or conservative band would immediately get shut down by the media and get labeled as all kinds of negative stuff, such as being bigoted, racist, etc.
TubeChaser yep! You got that right. However I believe Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal is that way, and that hasn’t shut them down. I think a lot of musicians and artists imagine that the left is where they belong. Like it is still the rebel cause... haven’t come to realize the tyranny that is throughout the system!
FranLesPaul what would right wing art be like in your mind? I am neither left or right. I consider myself a centrist, or you could say I believe there are things of worth on both sides. I believe in maximum freedom and maximum protection of rights, but a small government presence in day to day living. But anyway, what in your mind would right wing art be?
A lot of people will hate on this journey into synthesizers and keyboards but I love it. What a pleasant surprise. I wish their tour brought them to South Florida. I would settle for Florida.
THE RedneckPrincessOfTacticoolness Yes. In fact I think that most people listen to a song, then wait a day or more before making their decision on whether they liked what they saw/heard.
I feel kinda stupid, I just discovered this song and don't totally get the political meaning of it? I guess if I heard it when it first came out it would make more sense? can someone fill me in?
The Decemberists doing psychedelic synth pop? Sure! Why not? They've done prog, metal, bluegrass, country, folk, Americana, blues... let's add to the lexicon for the most eclectic band in America. Can't wait to see you guys again this year at Traveller's Rest!
Check our The Crane Wife (2006; a mix of English style folk and prog rock), The Hazards of Love (2009; an epic 59 minute Prog Rock story w/ hints of metal and even country), and Picaresque (2005; VERY English and my first exposure to them; I could have sworn they WERE English when I first heard them).
I genuinely hope i come to love this one. Two listens in I haven't gotten there. It's just not working for me yet. But I did drive that exact car they are in when i was in my 20s. Rovers are beautiful cars and the V8 a lovely drive.
I'm a huge fan of the Decemberists so this isn't hate, This is just a funny observation. Anyway, last year The Shins released a new album with a Montreal kind of sound and Monty Python-esk visuals in their videos. Now the Decemberists have released a new track with a Montreal kind of sound and a video with Monty Python-esk visuals. It's like Colin Meloy heard Heartworms, slammed his fists on the table and said "Dammit! We need that....just more Decemberists!" I am btw totally gonna buy this album as soon as it's available :3
Are you referring to the sudden change in style of The Decemberists, or the Monty Python vibe from the video, or both? Also I accidentally clicked your name while trying to respond and I really like the song you have posted on your page.
Brogan R yeah kinda both, but the more I think about it the more likely it seems that that’s what the director was going for. And thanks! I’ve got a cover of the rake’s song that I think turned out okay on there too if you wanna check out more
TheNumberScott Since you brought it up, can we all affirm that we have progressed and matured as a society to admit without equivocation that Michael Palin has never received the recognition he deserves as one of the greatest comedians who ever told a joke? I mean, like in American baseball, why do we focus on one player (John Cleese) for hero worship when what the person does can't be accomplished without a brilliant teammate? So brilliant and yet capable of hiding in plain sight just to the left or right of a hammy, cheesy, media darling and attention whore who upon closer inspection isn't anywhere as handsome as the genius Michael Palin. Mind you, I'm not suggesting that we give the man his due, just admit to ourselves that we owe him something, apologies the least, perhaps a Night at the Met, an HBO Special, or an award at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Just brainstorming here. I mean, when you hear the words "Dead Parrot", who comes to mind instantly? That sketch alone should be worthy of endless admiration. Certainly a LOT funnier than a hack reciting a list of cheeses in a "Cheese Shop", don't you think?
We know you threw your arms around us In the hopes we wouldn't change But we had to change some A different sound but different is not worse. Can't wait to hear the rest!
Love the New Order / Peter Hook influence in the first part of the track. I think it's great that a band is willing to not just to wear their influences on their sleeve but to openly celebrate them. Aint no pigeonhole for this lot:-)
First time I heard this I had the knee jerk reaction everyone's having of "aahhh it's different and weird I'm not sure I like it" but decided to listen to it on repeat to try and warm up to it.... Turns out that was not needed, on my second listen I was jamming out I'm so heckin excited for the rest of the album
I like the way this song sounds it's a throwback 80s style reminds you of New Order groups like Real Life and Talk Talk very 80s to be such a new song the song is definitely a winner in my book
I feel great listening to you! Awesome song, really like it. I was missing you. And this your music is an oasis, between all the crap of music that is playing now, your music is absolutely a breath, and salvation, real music for the soul. Thanks!!
It absolutely does, I first listened to it RIGHT when it dropped, was nonplussed. I've since listened about thirty more times and it grew quickly. After five.
Holy shit, I love it! Cannot stop listening to this and the new Eels track! It's looking like 2018 is going to be a very good year for new music. 2017 was a bit meh, to be honest.

They add these 80's keyboard sounds, but the song still sounds like classic The Decemberists. That's why they are a fucking great band!
