Lyrics:
I alight like a whisper
I alight with the lights out
And it won’t take me long just to find you
And it won’t take me long just to find you
I’m allied to the winter
But don’t you get clever
Don’t you get clever
I’m allied to the landslide
Gonna leave you all severed
Gonna leave you all severed
I alone am the answer
I alone will make wrongs right
But in order to root out the cancer
It’s got to kept from the sunlight
I was born to a jackal
I was born in a whiteout
Gonna smother you all till I choke you
Gonna smother you all till you kick out

I'm actually happy 13 Reasons Why brought their audience here. The Decemberists are a great band. Been listening to them since high school.
I hate to be a music norm but goshdangit mariners revenge is so my favorite
Blz agora segura aqui...
I was brought here from The Apology Line Podcast from Wondery, and then I had to listen to the rest of this album as well. I also started listening to the Decemberists in high school (I was 16 then, I’m 31 now) when a boyfriend made me a wonderful mix tape that changed my life forever that included The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, Elliot Smith, and The Shins.
its funny how everyone mentions 13 reasons why cuz i heard it on treadstone the tv show, based on jason bourne
@@mjmellan I heard it in 13 RW. And I was just into it. So I searched it😁
Am I the only one who instantly liked this song upon hearing it?!
THE RedneckPrincessOfTacticoolness Yes. In fact I think that most people listen to a song, then wait a day or more before making their decision on whether they liked what they saw/heard.
No. The first time I heard it was in concert, and I liked it. Actually, I liked about everything they played.
I did until I watched the video and understood its meaning.
I feel kinda stupid, I just discovered this song and don't totally get the political meaning of it? I guess if I heard it when it first came out it would make more sense? can someone fill me in?
This is an eighties band called Chemlab
This sounds like old music from the future.
Lol bro tell me how you just made sense... But like idk why 🤣
Future Retro. Its a thing
Reminds me of Joy Division.
future retro i like that
Doesn't nothing too?😅
Not many songs that pull me in right off the first note but this one did. Incredible
I didn't know I needed this in my life.
Ditto. Came on Sirius XM Spectrum while I was driving today.
There is so much that you don't know. Enjoy the ride!
I'm learning quickly. Lol
This shit just woke me up hearing it for the first time on a radio alarm... Best alarm ever.
And now I know what I don't need in my life.
I don't think I've ever heard a decemberists song I didn't love. They are legendary.
I have.
“The Mariner’s Revenge Song.”
@@viniciusgmachado1204 how did you not love that song??!?
@@gorgonzola9373 I just don’t.
It sounds _nothing_ like the rest of The Decemberists’ discography.
@@viniciusgmachado1204 That's a classic bro!
And now for something completely different.
Are you referring to the sudden change in style of The Decemberists, or the Monty Python vibe from the video, or both? Also I accidentally clicked your name while trying to respond and I really like the song you have posted on your page.
Brogan R yeah kinda both, but the more I think about it the more likely it seems that that’s what the director was going for.
And thanks! I’ve got a cover of the rake’s song that I think turned out okay on there too if you wanna check out more
I got more of a yellow submarine vibe.
But yet, somehow, The Decemberists! :D
TheNumberScott Since you brought it up, can we all affirm that we have progressed and matured as a society to admit without equivocation that Michael Palin has never received the recognition he deserves as one of the greatest comedians who ever told a joke? I mean, like in American baseball, why do we focus on one player (John Cleese) for hero worship when what the person does can't be accomplished without a brilliant teammate? So brilliant and yet capable of hiding in plain sight just to the left or right of a hammy, cheesy, media darling and attention whore who upon closer inspection isn't anywhere as handsome as the genius Michael Palin.
Mind you, I'm not suggesting that we give the man his due, just admit to ourselves that we owe him something, apologies the least, perhaps a Night at the Met, an HBO Special, or an award at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Just brainstorming here.
I mean, when you hear the words "Dead Parrot", who comes to mind instantly? That sketch alone should be worthy of endless admiration. Certainly a LOT funnier than a hack reciting a list of cheeses in a "Cheese Shop", don't you think?
Every time I hear this song it somehow gets better. I dig that 80s vibe!
Heavy 80s vibes
LOL You clearly didn't grow up during the '80s. This is a very '60s aesthetic. Look at Beatles songs of the mid- to late '60s. This has zero to do with the '80s.
@@waywardmind Sure, bud. Synth has nothing to do with the 80s LOL
Just heard this for the first time yesterday and almost got a speeding ticket. That bassline effin' drives.
REMs Orange crush will get you a speeding ticket as well! 🚗
They add these 80's keyboard sounds, but the song still sounds like classic The Decemberists. That's why they are a fucking great band!
This song is a perfect example of why the Decemberists are my favorite band. They are more than just a folk band! Love this song!!!
Matthew Burrell I don't get folk when I hear them I get Billy Idol in a calmer state.
@Matthew Burrell I just found The Decemberists this year, and it’s only January!
And I just found this song for my very first time, and you’re right! It’s a great one!
@@biggbatt Depends on the song and the album. This song I can hear that. Most of their stuff, not so much.
so unexpected yet still so Decemberists. I love it so much.
David Byrne
Andrea Pisani +
Just curious, but what part of this song feels "so Decemberists" to you? Like, it's not a bad song - it's fine - but I honestly can't think of one single quality it possesses that resembles their earlier work.
Andrea Pisani huh, that's strange,I thought this was quite a bit different than their usual, they're more folkish/ acoustic than 80's Atari/the Fixx sound, but ok,everyone has their own opinion
DrMrGrunge, you're absolutely right,I thought the same, nothing like the Decemberists,360 different, this is total 80's pop and Atari mixed,I didn't even know it was them when I heard it on 103.1 WRNR
The amount of people commenting in surprise of the overt political overtones is killing me.
You are shocked that an indie band from Portland is anti Trump? You must not get out much.
Not to mention, they must not listen to the Decemberists much... 16 Military Wives....Calvary Captain....
Wow! Yeah, these guys aren’t surprising In that way. I would love to see a centrist or conservative band come out of there. I find it lame that so many artists fall in line with the same old trope. Artist doesn’t have to equal left leaning, but it seems to mostly be the case these days.
A centrist or conservative band would immediately get shut down by the media and get labeled as all kinds of negative stuff, such as being bigoted, racist, etc.
TubeChaser yep! You got that right. However I believe Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal is that way, and that hasn’t shut them down. I think a lot of musicians and artists imagine that the left is where they belong. Like it is still the rebel cause... haven’t come to realize the tyranny that is throughout the system!
FranLesPaul what would right wing art be like in your mind? I am neither left or right. I consider myself a centrist, or you could say I believe there are things of worth on both sides. I believe in maximum freedom and maximum protection of rights, but a small government presence in day to day living. But anyway, what in your mind would right wing art be?
one of the best songs ever written
Just one of those songs that sticks to ya
I am a relatively recent fan of the Decemberists, so I am not wedded to their traditional sound. However, as a big fan of New Wave in the 80s when I was in college, I am excited by this! I saw The Bodeans and the Violent Femmes on a double bill at Milwaukee’s Summerfest in 1986, and this track sounds like a blend of the two.
Had never heard of this band, but when I came across this track I thought it _was_ from the 80s. (The production gave it away, but otherwise…)
If you haven't already, check out The Faint.
You'd like Discover America 😍
Kathy Astrom I thought the same thing the first time this song played on NPR
i had thought this until i saw your comment. I am still confused about how this is a political song.
Stop being so delicate this song is freaking amazing - so glad they took their psychodelia to another level
Heard this on the radio yesterday for the first time. had to find it... great song.... it took me a while to figure out why it has the 80s sound. Its the synthesizer!!
Hell, I’m 65 and love this song.
heard this song on the radio yesterday. blown away. I love it. guitar and techno is a beautiful marriage
I need to know what radio station that was. The only stations that seem to appear popular anymore are rap and pop.
Anything is a beautiful marriage when the Decemberists do it.
Hell, I am 64 y.o., heard a lot of genres of music in my life, and I love this song.
“Bryce dude it’s me, where the hell are you?”
Andrew Garfield zach literally threw bryce’s phone into the sea and called him anyway
Şahan Yıldız Zach’s a fucking idiot.
@@jeffhardyso wow massive plot hole.
Captain america :) haha
@@jeffhardyso well actually "NO"
The Decemberists are evolving. Is it 'The Crane Wife '? No. Are the changes and new sounds exciting and awesome? Yes. Case closed. I am on board for the journey, Colin and friends!
Bands cant win, if they stay the same sound, they are a one trick pony, if they evolve and take in new influences they are a sell out. I love this song!
By "new sounds" you mean "sounds badly ripped off from 80s pop"?
I wish there was a " love " button John ! Lol
Who wants a band to keep churning out the same stuff and never evolve or experiment??!
This band is my favorite, and this song is a chilling warning of the violence we faced under Trump as LGBT Americans are still not valued as humans. Neither are immigrants, or most other minority groups, be they religious like Jewish or Muslim, even if you were raised Christian against your will, or a skin color like Black, Asian, or if you're disabled, or poor. Or any mix of what I've already mentioned, or native from one of the reservations. We don't even report on Crimes against non citizens on TV in this country, and before anyone get on my case for bringing up politics, or accuses me of "virtue" signaling... our lives aren't political. You're the ones pushing that claim, so kindly stfu if you think my life is political, because it's not.
The Decemberists doing psychedelic synth pop? Sure! Why not? They've done prog, metal, bluegrass, country, folk, Americana, blues... let's add to the lexicon for the most eclectic band in America. Can't wait to see you guys again this year at Traveller's Rest!
I didn't know they did so many different styles. I only know their REM-like folk rock.
Check our The Crane Wife (2006; a mix of English style folk and prog rock), The Hazards of Love (2009; an epic 59 minute Prog Rock story w/ hints of metal and even country), and Picaresque (2005; VERY English and my first exposure to them; I could have sworn they WERE English when I first heard them).
says theyre the most eclectic band in America... Have you even heard of Modest Mouse?
Oh yes. I favor Colin and the gang, especially for their lyrics.
Kurt Depner wins for best comment on this video so far!
This is the song we don't deserve, but need.
Cuando escuche esta cancion del primer capitulo de la 3 temporada de 13 reason why. Dije nooo que epico.
For some reason I feel like I’ve been hearing this song on the radio for 10 years. I was shocked when I found out it’s from 2018
Same here man
I'm annoyed that I'm just now hearing this. I used to be big into Decemberists and I guess I took a break then I missed out
I love this song so much... I have listened to this and the Crane Wife album non-stop all week. It helps sooth the stomach bug that I've been dealing with.
Heard this on the radio the other night, absolutely amazing. Had to come find it!
Reminds me of 80's New Wave...LOVE The Decemberists!
So freaking refreshing and so freaking needed! Can't stop listening!
Animation is Incredible
Love you decemberists
Now THIS is a bass line
a tribute to Joy Division yes

You do know that's not bass right?
@@yamal2068 Yes it is. You have no idea what you're talking about.
@@SteveSmith-ze5mw i respect this comment so much
Holy shit this is a bop.
This is really refreshing and it still sounding like The Decemberists! Love it!
this song is just so amazing
Loving this tune & yea it’s on my list of favorites👀
I’m 14 and I used to like the kinda radio pop music that’s on tiktok and stuff, but my dad just introduced me to this and I’m literally ✨obsessed✨
Josie, you have a very smart dad! Now go give him a hug! 👍🤗❤️
Nice to see the young getting into better music.
Chills keep creeping down my spine whenever I hear that song.
This is absolutely amazing!
Decemberists still putting out great music. These folks are among the best in rock n roll. I love this new song.... looking towards the album release...
13 reasons why!
Such a lovely song.
Awesome! I can hardly wait to hear the rest!
Damn near everything they do blows me away the first time I hear it but this tops them all.
Remember guys: They had to change some. You know, to belong to us.
was waiting for this. wasn't gonna do it, but was waiting for it.
Welp, time for another hairdressers appointment...
But what we really need to know is if they're still endorsing Axe Shampoo!
smoke up.. "Bob"
They've always been changing. It gets annoying when people whine every time a new album is released.
what a nice song =)
Freaking amazing in everyway!!💝
They are getting more good than ever
This IS GOOD!!!! NEVER heared of them before this evening.
Can’t stop listening to this 🥰
This song is a perfect example of why the Decemberists are one of my favorite bands. :D
Right on wicked tune..love it!
Man, I didn't know there was a new album in the works. I'm glad to know, but waiting for it is going to be so damn difficult now.
march 16, tour on sale too. check their site!
The song is espectacular 🤩 I love you.
Amazing. Can't wait for the rest!
I truly respect and admire you guys....much love and respect this is a great band God bless
This popped up in my recommended and its surprisingly really good. i was expecting something with soft electric guitar, but i got funky synth
Who's here because they like good music?
The Communists have got the music.
Obviously. But I would never have been introduced to this song if not for the unrelated platform where I first heard it.

Excellent. They sound refreshed.
love the sound!
When I first heard it, I thought "well alright, it is different, but I still like it". That was 30-something plays ago. I am in love with this song now. Been watching these guys change over the last decade, and I can't get enough of them.
This song and video really screams "Cage the Elephant-Come a Little Closer" for some reason, definitely adding this to my playlist👍
I love it! Just bought tickets to see you all in Durham, NC in April. I CANNOT WAIT!!!
Rob Andrews I'm gonna see them in Charlotte that same month. My favorite band for years and it'll be my first show of theirs. Hope your show will be spectacular!
Love it. A January treat.
We know you threw your arms around us
In the hopes we wouldn't change
But we had to change some
A different sound but different is not worse. Can't wait to hear the rest!
Andy Bellairs exactly what I was thinking
Ooo...this is good. This is real good.

Good to have you back guys! Digging your new sound!
I'm here after the algorithm brought me to mariner's revenge song
That song is great.
The exact same thing happened to me.
High key literally the exact same thing
Same
Isn't everyone?
Great synth sounds - looking forward to the new record!
Best song i've heard from them, diggin it
not too blown away by this, but I really like this sound on them. hope the album goes even further.
Album is a mix of this new style and their older styles.
after a couple of dozen listens I'm starting to love it.
shame the new single went back to their all too familiar territory.
First time I heard this I had the knee jerk reaction everyone's having of "aahhh it's different and weird I'm not sure I like it" but decided to listen to it on repeat to try and warm up to it.... Turns out that was not needed, on my second listen I was jamming out I'm so heckin excited for the rest of the album
Great song and a great album.
I love this song so much 😍🔥❤️
This band is so unique. I love them for that.
I've always loved The Decemberists, I hope this grows on me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It absolutely does, I first listened to it RIGHT when it dropped, was nonplussed. I've since listened about thirty more times and it grew quickly. After five.
Exactly what I'm looking for in one of my favorite bands of all time rn.
really love this!!
Definetly not here after the first episode of 13rw =)))
Lie 😁
I'm so happy that I'm here because of 13 reasons why, because I didn't know this before and now I'm hearing all time long..
Now if you would've said Titans, I would have respected you, but not now.
s3 ep1 for mee lol

@@ladymcquaid Agreed. I think there’s a good story in there, but the endless repetitive ads and the host ruined this version of its telling for me.
