Avid board gamer here. Totally agree with Dave. If I wanted to take a loan that was half our annual income to play a game... I would be a child. He is rolling a 1 on a wisdom check.
Rolling a 1 😂.
I am all for D&D, but wow. Lol
With his intelligence it’s gotta be better RNG to just roll to bluff.
This comment is a natural 20 - well gamed, Good Sir!
Well said! haha
So kind of him to build a man cave for the upcoming foreclosure buyer.
Not really, the next buyer is going to need to gut out the customizations
Lmao 😂
I play D&D weekly, actually running the games. Completely agree with Dave's thoughts here. The hobby isn't the issue, its the selfish and childish heart
Dave made the comment before he knew anything about income or a loan. You’re such a Dave fan you let him insult the hobby and still defended him lol
Your brother is a genius. That’s a perfect strategy for dumping the ball and chain.
🤣🤣🤣
So a friend of mine was in a gun store, buying some ammo. Dave walks in and my friend yells, "I promise it is a debit card Dave!" He said Dave started laughing...as Dave walked back to the back room with the manager. Looks like Dave is a regular there...LOL.
My husband worked 12 hours a day since 1987 when he came home, I went out and worked nights so someone was always there for our kids, we split shift so there was no daycare and no other people raised our kids. We never took out any loans except for ONE car and the house. Guess where we are today? There was no Ramsey plan of teamwork back then. It's all about husband and wife teamwork and if your not on the same page forget it!
I can't figure out why it needs to cost in excess of $20k to decorate a room, never mind if it's D&D decorations or something else. If hubbs wants a D&D man cave so badly, he needs to roll up his sleeves and start building.
It my be a finished basement?
And build it overtime
i doubt he has the capabilities to do that
One of the great things about D&D is that you only really need a copy of the rules, some pencils and paper, a set of dice, and your imagination.
👆👆👆"
True, but some people like to go all out..... nothing wrong with that if you can afford it, but if you can't keep it simple..... this guy is obviously not Will Wheaton, but he's trying to be
I mean, a few books too though right?
@XFizzlepop-Berrytwist. It is harder to find all the information without the books, but it is possible!
DnD has become so popular because it was designed to be played with pencils, paper, and dice on a craft table. I can’t imagine what kind of stupid it takes to be to want a 20k home equity loan on 50k/year joint salary to make some cringe den you can upload pics of to Reddit once for validation.
Hey! I’m 51 and play D&D and run FPU classes! 😆
I’ve played dungeons and dragons since I was a kid… still play occasionally as an adult. The average annual income of the players around my table is over $100k 😆.
Always talked about having a dnd man cave but tbh it’s a theatre of the mind. Invest in miniatures and table top landscapes to up your game but the dining room table has always been the spot.
Hah! Nerd! But rich nerd….
*Cries.*
XD
Seriously though, sounds like a great way to network. Damn.
I can appreciate wanting a "D&D man-cave" having played the game since 1976.
But you only really need a room, bookshelves a table and some lights.
The rest is all gaming materials and decorative items that can go in ONE AT A TIME.
All he needs is a finished (drywall, paint, flooring) room and then start loading it as you can afford to.
But... this is ...
His brother.
Not caller's business really.
We play it at our kitchen table.
A gaming room would be cool… not worth going into debt for.
@@fhuber7507
Welp his brother's wife is staying at his house, so it became his problem
@@youngroosevelt38 thank you...these comments themselves are 🙃
I have a video game man cave and tbh it is really nice to have a spot in the house that it is your own but I didn't go in debt to build it, it has been a 25+ year thing in the making collecting the things that I really like and not going too overboard with it
Not gonna lie Bro - that sounds pretty cool!
Sure, his "brother" wants a D&D mancave...okay. 😉👌🏽
Exactly. I guarantee you it was him that wants it.
it's a ridiculous example, but many of us are overspending on personal hobbies at the cost of a filled out life.
Dave, I'm sure a lot of us would really love to see a brief tour of your arsenal. Even if it's just a few of your favorites.
Probably won't.
He showed off his mansion, ten car garage and his car collection on the show a few years ago and people hammered him over it on youtube videos and wouldn't let go for months.
Yep, I have no problem with a spouse funding a hobby they love IF we can afford it. Taking out a $20k loan when you only make $50k…uhhh, that’s a nope 👎.
My husband and I play D&D on our old well loved kitchen table every single Saturday with no issues. But i do have to admit having a whole room dedicated to my geeky hobbies sounds like heaven lol
When I was a child, I thought like a child.
I was surprised that the wife needed to stay at the brother's house over this...oh my. The guys D&D Man Cave strategy is working 100% spot on.
Now there’s no one nagging them to end the session early. Lol.
possibly the dumbest idea to borrow money.
He probably justifies it by calling it a home improvement. In reality you'll be lucky to recoup 30-50% of improvements when you sell.
I will only say if he ever gets it done I would love to see it.
CORRECTION: Man-child cave...
👆👆👆.,
This guy had best mind his own business and stay out of his sister's marital problems. I am surprised Dave did not tell him this. They will both end up turning on him. NEVER get involved in someone else's marital problems unless there is abuse, etc. and they need help getting out of it.
Yea don't get involved. It's best to let them do their own thing.
obviously that's financial abuse. he also probably worried about those "big children" so he asked for advice.
Will Byers is in his late 20s already?
Lots of D&D enthusiasts are DIYers and have made elaborate sets from stuff you can get from craft stores, and stuff you can just download.
This just reeks of buy-in. Any idiot can do that.
I have $200k saved up and I just got a $50k bonus, and I'm terrified at spending $9k on a watch I really, really want and have loved for many years. Gosh. Some people borrow money for asinine things like a mancave? Absurd.
$9 for a watch seems asinine to me. Doesn't your cellphone show the time?
@@stephenshelton4267 $9k ;) And yes, that's exactly what's holding me back! The watch would serve as a piece of technological marvel for me, and it would be male jewelry for special occasions. It'd be a watch that I would keep for the rest of my life and wear occasionally.
It would grant me joy. But I don't need the function of a watch, it's inferior to even the cheapest quartz watch, and you can find similar-looking watches for 1/100th of the price, except those would be cheap metal and plastic.
Get the watch.
@@stephenshelton4267 By that logic, a cellphone is asinine.
@@jrwntctv8091 Cellphones actually do things, and even the glitziest cost 1/8th of a watch. I can hardly point my head in a direction where I don't see the time.
There’s nothing wrong with being a game fan or “nerd”
But a MAN never puts family in any strain for a freakin hobby
Save up a collection piece by piece overtime and get a man cave the right way
It’s just a hobby, don’t be dumb about it
The brother should stay out of it as no matter what the outcome of this situation he will be blamed for something. Even paying for marriage therapy is a minefield.
Q. What is the difference between a geek and a dork? A. Polyhedral dice.
Im not into Dungeons and Dragons but its no more childish than old guys spending money at the horse track or spending thousands to change the color of your 57 chevy , or the millions of adult men who spend hours on Xbox lol...Just saying...the hobby itself shouldn't matter its the idea hes borrowing money he cant afford to pay back thats all...D&D, games, guns, cars the item itself never maters different things bring different people joy...Its funny how we all prioritize things differently, maybe hes unhappy and that mancave will make his life better...or maybe not :) Only he would know for sure, you can be out of debt and completely depressed and hate life with BILLIONS in the bank...or be in massive debt and happy...who to say what's really right, financially of course its wrong BUT finances is only a small part of the picture in life...But he could be that guy who gets his 20k cool room and still wants more it never ends...those guys exist too...
It's not the D&D itself, it's the same sort of immaturity and irresponsibility if he wanted to borrow $20K to buy a Rolex or a boat or piano with an income of $50K.
@@megalodon1726 whatever. He made fun of his hobby way before he heard the cost. Stop blindly defending him.

nope - it is called living by principals which is not embedded in American culture.
@@clarifyingquestions Its not an American thing or non American thing its more like a 2022 thing...Life changes and how people live has changed...

Jeff!
@cutlerylover I'm pretty certain it's an American culture thing. Just like they teach in schools: "You can be whatever you want" and "You can do whatever you want." other cultures are prescriptive.
I fail to see the need to insult the man’s hobbies.
He is making fun of the “man” wanting to take 20k loan out of his home’s equity to play a game.
@@Whatorwellsaid21 You need to watch the video again.
Then you probably have the same level of immaturity that Dave is criticizing.
I love DnD, but just build a table that converts into a gaming board, doing something like this is for millionaires and twitch streamers.
I don’t agree with Dave on everything but man solely agree with him on this whole video. I appreciate his maturity not to pick on D&D, but any hobby and looking at them as toys when it comes to men
I have a LOT of years of playing D&D under my belt. I would maybe have a room to play in... but I would never ever ever ever finance to make it happen. My general rule is... would it add value to a home? I mean you can D&D up the walls ect... i can be painted over... but does the base structure add to the homes value? Make sure it is wired to be a entertainment space later. Speaking just to the guy directly as a RPG lover... this is not the time during hyper inflection to take out a equity loan. The only time to do that is renovate before selling so you get more $ on the sale end... and THAT is even super risky. We have never cared really about the space we have gamed in. Sometimes it was on a old ping pong table... sometimes it was on folding plastic tables... sometimes dining room tables... sometimes a kitchen table. At everyone one of those tables we had tears of laughter. Your friends don't need that space from you... they need your friendship and laughs. A better space does not make for better friends. The best saying I ever heard when it comes to friendship is... if you want a good friend... be a good friend. It is really that easy. If it isn't, you are willing to spend 20K in debt and risk your financial health and your relationship with your wife... to impress people you don't really like.
Rolled a NAT-20 on this idea…. Big fan of the man cave do it!
Why does he need that much money for this, all he needs is a table?
Thats boring
You're a snooze lol
Exactly, or he can just convert a room on his own (get some second hand decor and throw it on the walls with some nice shelves for the books and items)
@@littlesongbird1 That sounds a little better. You can probably do the entire thing in under like 2-3k which is reasonable.
Because proke people do broke things
Dungeons and Dragons is far more moral than a fire arm collection.
I don't think Dave's going after the brother because it's a Dungeons & Dragons man-cave per se. He's going after the brother because he's wanting to finance his hobbies and put him and his family in debt when they should be focusing on getting their lives straightened out.
Personally, I would love to build a man-cave basement for watching movies and sports games as well as have a billiards table. But right now, I'm in no position financially to pay for such an endeavor. Until that day, I'm just gonna have to be patient and be wise with my money.
he said that he was a boy before he understood the question.
Have to disagree, they absolutely all judged the hobby. Don't get me wrong, he shouldn't finance the room, but it doesn't matter whether its for DnD or sports or whatever else. Very rude.
Dave for sure judged the activity itself. For sure one of his more cringe moments.
@@SicklyNickable vErY RuDe. Ofc people would laugh. He's a married man who's risking his marriage to BORROW 20K for a game
@@addir9502 I agree its wrong for him to borrow any amount of money for a hobby, but if you go back and watch the video, Dave was laughing at the guy BEFORE he realized he wanted to BORROW the money, just because he feels like DnD is childish. I personally don't believe in judging people for how they like to spend their free time. DoInG tHiS doesn't make you sound right, it just makes you look like, well, a child.
There must be something underlying that is there someone is not seeing.
Someone with not a lot of finances wouldn't be doing that unless there was something seriously wrong and DnD Man-Cave is the coping/escapism method.
Maybe instead of wasting his time watching NFL, Nascar, NBA, or whatever he chooses to hang out with his friends to play this game on the weekend. At least he won't be simping out with wearing a jersey with another man's name on it.
This guy does not need $20k to buy/build a table and chairs for the game and mess of shelving. If he wants one of those special tables, he could shop around, (a lot), for a cheap pool table and some removable boards as a cover.
You don't need help in helping. She needs to be talking to Dave. Put her on the phone.
👆👆👆.,.,
Nothing wrong with dnd. If he likes it, than so what. Dave doesn't have to make fun of him for liking DND.
But 20k for it?
Maybe he wants to finish the basement. And it will just be DND theme.
There have to be more to this story.
Joe Manganiello (Sofia Vergara's husband for those who don't know) is dropping over $100K on a table for his DND mancave but they have the money to do it...
You’re right, nothing wrong with dnd or being a brony or an incel for that matter, kind of all fit into the same category
@@jkneeland89
I dont think those all fit in the same category… what are you talking about?
“When your ‘fun’ takes up too much of your life, it’s no longer fun when you’re a grownup.”
This is the only point that makes no sense. Assuming you don’t have kids, the things that bring you joy should absolutely have priority in your life.
Really? To the point you’re willing to borrow against your house and cause marital strife? Man child spotted
Don't knock peoples hobbies man, but don't borrow money for it.
20k ?! That's the shocking part...
Someone else mentioned that this might be an unfinished basement that would need to be finished.
@@stephenshelton4267 should not be much of a problem with the wife then.
This reminds me of Rudy FnB guy who went to a greater extreme with his hobby. 20K for D&D is a bit too much, this could be a lot cheaper and have the same experience.
I'm an avid D&D player but I don't like it enough to build a D&D themed man cave and I would never finance it with money I didn't have. Dave is on point about this, and it was nice of him to admit he has too many guns. The first step to getting help is admitting you have a problem.
I have a 49ers & Jags helmet and guitars in my man cave. I'd like to build a giant arcade so I can play sf2 all day.
👆👆👆"''
That’s an oxymoron 😂
In my experience, most everyone has some kind of hobby we want to blow far to much $ on.
For some it's games (He would fall under board games, I fall more under video games & anime), Dave mentioned his gun collection, for others it can be Fancy Cars, Sports (Football is very popular), Movie's, Jewelry, Designer Clothing, Makeup collection, & the list can go on.
They key is knowing the difference between a want & a need. This is a want & he needs to channel his parents & tell himself no theycan't afford it. If he wants something, he should do the poor man's version for new. Get a cheap table (Goodwill/Garage Sale), place it in a room, & call it a day. Upgrade every so often after hitting major finance goals as a treat for doing a good job but never go in debt over a want. Stopping ones self from going into debt over needs can be hard enough especially with today's insane gas prices.
As Dave intimated, some people just need to grow up.
Do you have a bigger gun collection then Demolition Ranch? You should do a collaboration. I would love to see you do some fun shooting vids 😃
No need to demean a person’s hobby. I don’t go around sneering at people who collect guns for fun, even if I don’t care for it. People have interests. Shocking lol
Dave emphasized that the hobby doesn’t matter. He made fun of the childish choice to take a 20k loan on it. You need to listen better.
@@Whatorwellsaid21 You apparently didn’t listen to the very beginning of the call. He made fun of both. I can help you with your listening comprehension skills. Seems like you need it.
@@Whatorwellsaid21 Except that he constantly made fun of DND and others that play it by association. He even said that "when she married this guy, she knew he was weird," implying that anyone into DND is weird.
Dave and many men have a hobby of making fun of DnD.
You can literally play on a card table and some folding chairs lol I have even played DnD on the carpet with friends when I was in my 20s and my back could handle it 😅
20k to create a non mainstream rec room is essentially 20k out the door, not coming back. If you have the cash to spare, that's awesome, enjoy your home, otherwise no bueno.
Plus, if Dave spends 20k on a rare gun, that cash isn't burnt. The gun collection is marketable and he could recover cash if he needed to sell (maybe even record a gain)
Thats a fair point, even if he overpaid on the gun, he can likely get at least half back.
I think she just found a new “hobby” too 😉
No need to slander the man's hobby.
Dave just wanted us to know that he has $400k of fire arms lol.
D&D is one of the best hobbies in the world. It is not for "little boys" and Dave was a bit rude about those who play D&D. That being said, that guy does not need a 20k D&D room.
Yea and you dont to need a 20k room for that
Dave has been more rude lately I’ve found.
He was using the term "little boy" to describe those who place wants over needs. Like you said, the guy doesn't need 20k for a room like that. But taking out a loan to spend that much on a room is pretty immature.
You and a lot of people in the comments must have failed reading comprehension class. He called the guy a child for wanting to take out a 20k home equity line for it.
Dave wasn't clowning on the guy for D&D, he was clowning on the guy for sacrificing family needs for a want.
If he can pay cash with wife on board then yes otherwise no
Even with cash it’s probably one of the dumbest and cringiest things to do
Why does he need a man cave? A man's home is his castle.

How do you even afford a house with a 50k income?
People I know with $50k income in Arizona bought their home before 2018.
Just be sure to get a pastor who's on board with D&D
It would only be justifiable if he already had a known business doing streaming that generated income .
Let's be real the caller wants to take a loan to build this 😂😂😂
I don't know what year y'all are living in, but nerd culture is actually socially accepted now
It’s all about needs and wants we are all guilty of wanting stuff we don’t need we need to learn all of us from the minimalist we don’t hear much from them because so many of us don’t want to live with just our needs not our wants Dave is doing good tonight
The same applies to a vehicle also.
Plot twist: he's the husband who wants the mancave
Bahaha! You're probably right, and the "sister" is really his wife.
Dave, him liking dungeons and dragons has nothing to do with his manhood. Disrespectful to call him a boy over that
He just received -10 to short-range wisdom.
Perhaps if he goes to the Pastor, he can have a spiritual awakening, build the man-cave, then start a D&D religion which can then be written off on taxes thus saving money.
What is the point of living if you can't have a dungeons and dragons man cave
Amen to his statement about changing happening through Christ

I personally couldn’t care less if he wants a HELOC to finance this, regardless of if I I get it or not, but this is clearly a marriage issue and she obviously shouldn’t sign. The brother needs to stay out of this other than to support his sister, she needs to say she’s refusing to sign and let the relationship chips fall where they will and go from there.
Ok, never mind, at $50k income, yeah, I have a problem with him spending $20k on… basically anything.
