I always explain to people that German chocolate cake was not named after the country, but was named after a man named German, and Baker’s chocolate wasn’t named after the occupation, but was named after a man named Baker. I love stories about words as much as I love John’s teaching videos.
I made this, never made a cake before, and it blew my mind 😂 I ate the whole cake I don’t feel bad because this was the best cake I ever had 😂😂😂 thank you from a first time baker
I really appreciate your tutorials, been following for a while but have finally subscribed! I now understand why you explain things so well because you were once a math & science teacher. The step by step guide, small hints and tips, clear voice … it’s all appreciated! Thank you ☺️
Oh my, double the frosting, absolutely in my book!! This has always been my favorite cake for my birthday, i just had one and I am treating myself to your recipe!! Thank you John!
German chocolate cake is my absolute favorite, despite the fact that I do not like coconut (go figure). Today is my birthday, my family lives in another city and my room mate is out of town, so it’s just me and my pups. So, I’m going to make this cake for myself. I used John’s recipe last year and by far, hands down, it is the best German chocolate cake I’ve ever had. Thank you John. My best to you and your beautiful little family!
this was one of the first cakes my mom taught me to make 40plus years ago, your recipe is perfect. The one thing I do is toast half of the coconut for a few minutes. it makes the frosting even more toffee like
My sister's birthday was yesterday, and she requested a German Chocolate cake. I tried this recipe, and it was so good! The consistency of the cake was perfect. My nephew said it was the best cake he had ever eaten (in all of his 7 years of experience lol). Needless to say, I binged on your videos, and I can't wait to make more of your recipes!
I grew up 5 miles from Mrs. Clay's house on Academy Drive in Dallas. I never knew it until the story of the origin of this cake came out on the internet. I do know it was our family favorite and the men in the family requested it for their birthday every year. Another coincidence is that I was born in 1957, the year this recipe was published in the Dallas Morning News. The recipe became so popular, The Baker's company started printing it on the label of their product.
John, I just made my first ever cake in my life and I made your German Choc. cake...it was amazing. I was stunned how doable cooking can be. Thank you. Your videos are excellent.
If I remember right it's called german chocolate cake not because it's from Germany but rather because there use to be a 'german chocolate' brand of chocolate that was once popular in the US and the recipe was started by that brand
Because of you I am becoming much more confident in my baking skills. Thank you for showing us there isn't anything we can't bake,we just need the right teacher. 😊
Kamala is always talking about how much she loves German Chocolate Cake... so, this is perfect for election day. Thanks for not dumbing it down, but giving great descriptions!
Thank you, John. I never trust a German chocolate recipe that doesn’t use Baker’s brand chocolate. There’s something very distinct about it in association with this particular cake.
I just made this. This was the 2nd recipe I’ve tried and this one blows it out of the water. The extra frosting was a great touch. My entire family was really enjoying it.
Glad to see no cake pan strips! I made your recipe twice, first no cake strips and the cake was perfect. The second time with the strips the cake was dense like a brownie.
When I was growing up in Northern Colorado, the local supermarket chain sold German chocolate danish pastries! They were our favorite weekend breakfast treat. I haven't seen them in years...John, it seems like the perfect thing for you to try your hand at to develop a recipe?
People used to rave about my grandmas German chocolate cake and begged for the recipe. She would giggle and say, I got it off the Baker’s Chocolate wrapper. 😂
Hi Shana, nice to meet you. sorry hope I’m not intruding, you have a wonderful profile I just wanted to say hello. Hope you are having a wonderful day?
Winter tip: use the hairdryer in warm/hot setting to keep the butter at the needed temperature. If it starts to harden apply a little heat and if it is too much just stop. Regulate as needed.
First time for me to watch one of your videos not only was it most informative but also very entertaining, thank you.👍 P.S. I first tasted German chocolate cake many years ago at college and instantly fell in love with it. Never have I baked one, so here goes.
This is my husbands favorite cake. Good old Betty Crocker cake mix and icing. 😂I haven't made a homemade cake in years, but I'm hooked John. 😋 I'm making this cake for sure soooooo move over Betty Crocker 😂I'm making John's cake and icing. ❤ You are the best ❤
This looks soooo fantastic! But I'm in the middle of making your English muffins and watching your bagel video. But this cake will be made as soon as I check to make sure i have the ingrediance. Always wanted to make this:)🥰🤩😘You're the best!
Funny story. We were in Germany for 4 years. I made German chocolate cake for our German friends... they loved it but never heard of German chocolate cake before. 😅😅😅
New camera?! This quality is incredible and I'm sad if it was my fault I ever missed out. Please keep doing what you're doing! I send most of your recipes to my sister who loves to bake and wants all the inspiration. Much love!
Made this in 2 9x13's. Didn't change a thing, but used normal semi sweet chocolate instead of german because i couldnt find any in the store. Turned out great! Used coffee instead of water like recommended
Watching a second time! Yum... would you do a video about your favorite flour especially if you use organic or sprouted wheat, if that's good for cakes and cookies? ❤❤❤
It doesn't help that places like Coldstone have an ice cream mix called Germanchökolätekäke, which isn't German either. It's just crazy English with umlauts. Thanks for this wonderful cake by Samuel German and Mrs. George Clay. That frosting looks superb, to say the least.
I haven’t the foggiest as to why but German Chocolate Cake was our (I’m a twin) birthday cake. Our favorite version of that cake is our 18th birthday. Picture the cake a 1 & a 6 & two house candles (mom thought that she had an 8) but we were legal to drink at 18 so we went to Baton Rouge & partied with our sister.
Hello and thank you for the recipe, it was deliecious! I made the cake this weekend, just with a different frosting/topping. I found the cake quite oily when I took it out of the pans, and after 24hours the delicious fluffiness started to sink and loose the air from the egg whites. Can you please let me know what I may have done wrong. I wondered if the butter was too much for the egg whites?
I always explain to people that German chocolate cake was not named after the country, but was named after a man named German, and Baker’s chocolate wasn’t named after the occupation, but was named after a man named Baker. I love stories about words as much as I love John’s teaching videos.
I am from germany an clicking on this video I wondered why I don‘t know about this cake.. now I know😁

My aunt made this and it was the best GCC I’ve ever had. I had to have the recipe and she said “Preppy Kitchen”. The caption is right, it is THE best!
I made this, never made a cake before, and it blew my mind 😂 I ate the whole cake I don’t feel bad because this was the best cake I ever had 😂😂😂 thank you from a first time baker
Love that you ate the whole cake 🎉
This is Hubby's favorite cake and it's his birthday week. Your timing is perfect!
My husband loves it too! His birthday was a few days ago, but he didn't have a cake.... I might just have to sneakily make this for him. 😊
Love your enthusiasm when making videos and your attention to detail!
right!! his videos are just so comforting !

Love it my friend wow many thanks always bless with your family really appreciate everything you do
This was the exact cake my mom used to make from scratch about once a year at most. She was a perfectionist and it took hours but it was so delicious.
Glad to see no cake pan strips! I made your recipe twice, first no cake strips and the cake was perfect. The second time with the strips the cake was dense like a brownie.

I could probably watch and listen to you bake all day. How do you stay so slim.
I will absolutely make it halving the sugar and the butter, looking forward.
This is my specialty. My kids LOVE IT💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I made it and it is amazing! I’m not a chocolate cake fan but this is different than chocolate. It’s lighter. Moist and fluffy. Thank you!
People used to rave about my grandmas German chocolate cake and begged for the recipe. She would giggle and say, I got it off the Baker’s Chocolate wrapper. 😂
My Mother always made this cake for our birthdays (6kids)... and you got it right - we're Texans! Thanks for the memories, Mom! RIP
German Chocolate Cake, IS MY FAVORITE!!! YUM!!!
Incredibly moist and decadent. Will be making again and again!
Looking at these mini cakes makes me feel creative! 🌟🎨
I just love watching your cooking video, you are a great teacher, and I bought your book, Awesome, keep up the good work🙋
This frosting's texture looks very similar to the Brazilian brigadeiro. Amazing! 😊
Thanks for showing all the little details of the recipe, John. I always learn something - love your videos!
This was such a helpful video. Making this for my mother-in-law’s birthday next week!

this looks soooo good!! i love chocolate and coconut combinations!!! very temping to make haha
By medium, I meant high. 😂 Love your recipes, John. I try a lot of them and they are ALWAYS fabulous! ❤
I used only 200 grams of sugar instead of 350 grams in the recipe, and the sweetness is just right.
Funny story. We were in Germany for 4 years. I made German chocolate cake for our German friends... they loved it but never heard of German chocolate cake before. 😅😅😅

Making this for my son’s birthday tomorrow 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Hi John! Love this recipe:) Question.. do you have a sesame seed bun recipe by chance? I'm wanting to make burgers for my boyfriends birthday. Thanks!
Hi John, I've always used your other recipie posted a few years ago (chef's kiss btw). How is this one different?
I was wondering same...will have to go re-watch it to find any differences 😅 was 5 years ago
My favorite cake and yours looks AHmazinG!
Watching a second time! Yum... would you do a video about your favorite flour especially if you use organic or sprouted wheat, if that's good for cakes and cookies? ❤❤❤
As a baker, I am often asked to bring desserts when invited to dinner. German’s Chocolate Cake was my father’s favorite.
Looks really yummy yummy
This is my dad’s favorite cake but he likes chocolate fudge frosting under the coconut frosting.
Hi John, do you have any suggestion for a substitute for buttermilk or how to make something simmiliar?😄
Milk with lemon Juice
Stir in 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of whole milk. Let it sit for a few minutes.
Toasting the coconut also improves the frosting greatly.
This looks amazing! I have not had a German chocolate cake in a very long time. I wish I had a slice right now.
It doesn't help that places like Coldstone have an ice cream mix called Germanchökolätekäke, which isn't German either. It's just crazy English with umlauts. Thanks for this wonderful cake by Samuel German and Mrs. George Clay. That frosting looks superb, to say the least.

Preppy Kitchen 2024 ❤. German Chocolete cake Recipe . Great Chocolete with his topping in Tes , moisture . From Lillian .
So delicious
Lol bringing it to a friends house with one giant slice taken out of it
Hello and thank you for the recipe, it was deliecious! I made the cake this weekend, just with a different frosting/topping. I wish the ingredients subtitles stayed on the screen long enough for me to read easily
