    Sean great series. Glad to see another hand tool channel getting established. I know you referred to the marking gauge lines as ugly for how you mark between your lines. May I suggest that's an opinion, there are some very seasoned master furniture makers who leave them as a sign it's been hand cut. Great tip on the masking tape instead of a small rebate, I'll definitely give it a try. wish you much success and growth on you tube.

      Hi Kevin! Thanks for watching, I'm glad the masking tape trick was helpful! I agree it is my opinion and I know other woodworkers keep the marking line on. However I feel a much better way of showing a joint is hand cut, is to make the pin small enough that a router bit couldn't fit into the gap and cut it, That's the only way you can really tell a joint is hand cut. You can use a router jig and then add the marking gauge line to make it look like it was hand done, but the pins will always be to big.

    I have benefited from some of your tips so I owe you one of mine. You can get these incredible fine toothed thin little saw blades that fit into an exacto knife handle from Zona Saw. They are fantastic for marking out the pins. They look and work like a knife but cut a fine kerf that’s not only easy to see but will reference and start your saw.

    Hi Sean, greetings from Ireland. I was interested to see that you mark the dovetails before the baseline. I always do the same (and for the same reason). Most tutorials (or books for that matter) advocate marking the baseline first. I like your style!

    Very nicely done Sean 😁. Lots of great tips in this video. I really need to try a "real" dovetail. I always seem to reach for the tablesaw and knock out a rubbish box joint 😧. I'm just three things missing... a sharp chisel, a sharp saw.... and the Sean skill to do it 😂🤣. Thanks for the video, have a safe and happy Christmas 🎅👍

    great and informative video learned different way for dovetailing. one question when marking the tail after using the marking knife are you drawing a line 90 degrees straight down on the tail board or is it at a angle and also which side of the board are you marking

    I was leary at first to see the word "perfect" in a heading written by someone so young. But you have learned well and definitely know what you are doing. And do I see a good deal of "Rob Cosman" watched videos from you? Good work though, and I am still far from your results but am working on it.

    What mind of dovetail saw was that you was using? I just ordered me a Lie Nielson dovetail saw and omg!! I absolutely love it!!! Every project I do has some kind of dovetails so I decided to treat myself. Its so nice. So nice in fact im going to get a carcass saw and tenon saw to have the whole set of them... I have a varitas carcass saw and its good... but man, that LN saw is like the Ferrari of saws lol.

      Hi Brian, I totally agree they're amazing. They feel brilliant in the hands, look amazing and perform beautifully. My dovetail saw is also a Lie Nielsen.

    Usually people, myself included, like the marking gauge line across the whole board and don't remove it, it shows they were hand cut.

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  3 года назад +1

      Hey mate, I do know that method. However you can put a marking gauge line over any joint even if it’s been cut by a router. I feel the best way to prove a joint is cut my hand it to make the pins small enough a router bit shank cannot fit in them.

      @@SeanEvelegh I just watched a Rob Cosman video about a new way he lays out his dovetails, he uses a marking knife that has a saw blade and marks out the pins prior to cutting out the waste so he's using the saw kerf to put the marking gauge in it, very impressive, you should watch it. What marking knife would you recommend?

  • @mikedeman5351
    @mikedeman5351 3 года назад

    Sean, silly question maybe but is there a wood species that you would recommend for a beginner practicing joinery. Is construction lumber or pallet wood (cleaned up) good enough?

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  3 года назад +1

      Hi Mike, I would recommend walnut or ash, because they are easy to work hard woods. On the other hand it’s good to practice with what you are likely to be using for your projects. If you never plan to use walnut, then don’t practice with it. If You often use pine and pallet wood, then it would be good to practice with that. Hope that’s helps.

      @@mikedeman5351 I agree. However, if you're just starting the better you can see your knife lines and pencil lines the more likely a good result. I recommend poplar or pine to start with(learning) and a good light. Without them it might add to your frustration. Good luck.
