- There are two styles of dovetailers. Those who think of them as utilitarian joints and those who take 'em to the next level and add a cosmetic touch. This video is for those who want to bring a level of precision to their hand cut dovetails and thus all joinery.

Watching this video for the second time as I attempt my first hand cut dovetails. I've only recently found your channel but I've enjoyed all of your videos so far. Many thanks for the effort you put in to educate us lesser woodworkers. Keep up the good work!
Thanks and good luck.
"If your off the line, STOP SAWING!"
Great quote!
Maybe I'll work on a T-Shirt with that.
Loved it!
I think one thing some people can’t comprehend is a 1 in dovetail will not fit in a 1 inch cut out. There as you know is interference... makes a difference what side of the line or on the line you are cutting. good video. Thanks
I can tell. You're definitely engineering biased. :)
Very informative video. Love your teaching skills.
Thanks
Your channel is a school.
Thanks so much
Thanks
WTE... I really like your stuff and plan to keep watching, but your dovetail gauge and triple strike are clearly Paul Sellers' design and teaching. Please simply acknowledge him! Keep up the good work.
john ross Hahahaha, dude.... even Sellers admits to learning this stuff. I got it from books written decades before he was born. Sellers is a good teacher but he hasn’t brought anything new to the craft (neither have I).
Beautiful joint, brother. Nicely done and very well explained, except setting up the smaller pins got missed.
Thomas Russell it was a exact repeat of same thing. Listen to lesson and extrapolate. Can’t spoon feed everything. :)
Great video! Thank you for this info!
Thanks
You're a heck of a good teacher. I am obsessed with the process of making dovetails. My profession (retired now) required precision. Tight fitting dovetails require precision at each step. Otherwise frustration sets in trying to make the dovetails fit in the end. I appreciate the details of this video. My most recent discovery is that preparing the pieces of wood as exact as possible makes the next step in the process less tedious. Thanks.
Thanks
Liked with praise
Thanks
Works of art!
Thanks
Your non-affiliate Amazon link leads to nothing on Amazon. I was interested in the marking gauge you are using.
pins first: "german way of dovetailing" 😂
wishlist link doesn't seem to work for me. Interested in info on the depth marker you are using. I appreciate the videos and in-depth. Thanks!

Lunch hour coffee time and I'm the first? cheers...rr Normandy, Fra
Coffee for lunch? So French.
@@wortheffort coffee AFTER lunch, lunch time takes three hrs in France
How did you make your marking gauge?
Diane Ernest look for the video.
where caan i buy your dovetail marking jig
It's on my website. wortheffort.com
Can you do a giveaway? I really love that tenon saw 😊
remynisce33 they’re less than $100. Buy one yourself.
Chipped out below the baseline on one side. It can happen to anybody.
I'm really interested in your comments about being able to see what you are doing and how you worked around a lamp to help. I'm finding being able to see what I'm doing in the tight space between pins problematic and have taken to using magnifying glasses. An age problem perhaps. It's good to see I'm not alone in needing assistance.
Hi there, i sure love your videos, great learning experience for a noob like me, i just pause the video because you said something that nobody says, that you can do both the pins or the tails first, guys like Frank goes pins first head on and lighting fast and great tecnique, and Rob Cosman e Paul Sellers are going tails with great results too, but not once somebody said that depends on the wood size and easy way to work it, i'm going to see rest of the video and hope to learn more good tips. thanks. Sorry for the bad English but i'm from Portugal.
Thanks
Thumbs up before watching, now let's enjoy :)
This was so well explained. You’re a great teacher.
helpful, but super boring. 😅😅😅
How did you layout the in-between tiny dovetails? using the dividers? thank you.
AndroidGameplays4Every1 it was in video, with the dividers and dt gauge.
your amazon list link is broken. was wondering which brand the marking guage was?
SHansard veritas
I've watched a handful of dovetail videos and it's always ppl joining 2 boards... what about the other 2 and then putting everything together. Nobody finishes the box. Good video though. I started watching you for the turning advice but i like the hand tool stuff a lot too.
Videos already 45 minutes....
Great video. When you're cutting the pins, do you obliterate the line, cut the waste side, or cut to the not-waste side? I'm working on a cabinet and my dovetails are coming out way too tight. It takes a lot of time to fix them and since it is hard to tell where it is too tight and thus some guesswork is needed, the overall fit gets degraded.
It’s burnished where tight.
@@wortheffort I guess I am blind, I can't see it. Your videos are great, btw.
No, coffee after my American Hamburger and fries(French wifes' in Paris half the week so I eat what I want.) rr
learned allot from your channel. Thanks!
I'm more of a barbarian but I think maybe I should change my ways haha
If barbarian works and you can get paid for it, refine don't redesign.
Thanks for sharing that
thank you
Your videos are really useful and so well presented. You are a great teacher. I hope you don’t mind, and it is probably just me being overly detailed... your voice is great but your audio is way off, making a little hard to listen to at times with shrill resonance and not compensating for whatever mic you are using. Just do a little eq and compression and drop the camera back a few feet or use a little wider angle lens. It will diminish the obviousness of the soft and missed focus shots too. Not a huge thing. Would take your game way up though...
No mic, just what’s on phone camera.
Modern tools are better than antique ones? Blasphemy! I'd never thought I'd hear that from you :)
For the most part, but these new marking guages......
This is a GREAT video. Thanks for making it.
Thanks
Still waiting for that dovetail cleanup video...cause I could really use it. 😊
THere are links in description to my Dovetail Demystified video. The end of that has repairs tips.
where do you get a router like that?

I wish I've seen this video before my first attempt of cutting dovetails. Thanks
Thanks
ohh so that's why my saw wanders to the right as I saw

That could almost be a t-shirt. ;)
Gotta shorten it up somehow.
@@wortheffort Cut the cut for fine cut.
Most experts advice you to do tails first. I am no expert and I find pins-first easier to lay out and cut.
Snowwalker six in one half dozen in other.
@@wortheffort That was not meant to be a criticism of tail first. I really enjoy your videos and I learn a lot. For me pins first is a bit easier. I haven't tried try cutting dovetails with longer boards yet. I might change my mind. Our methods constantly evolve.
You had me glue to the screen . Loved the tutorial. I've tried a few in the past but never came out good enough to show in a video.Thank you for that wonderful lesson
Thanks, try one.
