    Great video, I am catching on by making mistake first. This will help others bypass that step. I focus so much now on the base lines because as you say "the angle of the tails are not important, as long as they are strait". And once the base line has been violated, it is game over. Just for fun, I recommend that people try free handing dove tails without guide lines, it is quite liberating.

    Great advice. I'm new to woodwork and have just started a channel where I have just finished my first bow tie inlay project all by hand. Its going to take a while but I'll get better with time.

    The thing that spooks me about dovetails is that you are cutting probably 20 different faces and you only need to get one wrong and the whole joint looks cr*p. Lot of pressure!!! Also, you guys make the sawing look so easy - I find it so difficult to get an absolutely true line.

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  3 года назад

      Hey mate, there are a lot of things you need to get right. but like most other things it takes time and lot of practice. My early dovetails were rubbish, some had gaps and others split... I just kept practicing. Hopefully this series will help you cut better dovetails

    great first part, Sean. Just one question on how you manage the pins part. Do you cut them straight from the saw (as it could seems in this video) or leave a space and pair it with the chisels? Really looking forward to the next parts!!
    Cheers from Italy, Alberto

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  3 года назад

      Thanks Alberto! I cut the pins straight from the saw. Sometimes they may need a little pairing, but I am to get it from the saw first time. See you in the next video!

    thanks Sean the biggest mistake i use to make is not cutting tails square and undercutting only for a gap to appear during clean up. have you any experience in fitting rail hinges or some call them stay hinges to boxes by hand i cant find a video on whole of you tube about them . i am sure it is something in you repertoire . looking forward to 2&3

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  3 года назад

      Hi David, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yes cutting square is very important. Rail hinge mortises are normally done with a router, you can set a stop of the router table fence and do it that way. And for a stayed rail hinge you can remove the waste material in the middle with a drill, then clean it up with a chisel. Hope that helps! Sean

    Why the chamfer? IK don`t think anybody else does that.

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  Год назад

      Hey Randy, Yes I know many fine woodworkers who use this method. It's to help locate the joint as well as giving space for the glue to squeeze into. Bare in mind, the chamfer doesn't go all the way to the edge, so it's not visible from the outside of the joint. Hope that helps.
