- Diamondback Firearms, maker of affordable and often strange guns has surprised us all once again with the new SDR revolver in .357 Magnum.

The video is from the Shot Show 2024 featuring Cody St John of Diamondback firearms.
They are introducing a new addition to their product lineup called the SDR, a stainless steel lightweight 357 Magnum revolver.
They invested in better equipment like trigger pull gauges and polishing machines to ensure the quality of the revolver.
The SDR is the lightest six-shot 357 Magnum revolver available, weighing 21.2 ounces.
It is compatible with aftermarket grips, including old J-frame grips.
Nice looking revolver looking similar to the Kimber K6s seems like they have taken over the role of lightest 6shot. I love the looks and the lines.
Been a fan of diamondback for years they make quality stuff at a working man’s price. Also have excellent customer service for any questions you may have. I’ll definitely be getting one of these.
I'd love to see 3 inch version. Hope they'll sell it in Europe too.

I will 100% agree with the benefits of removing the cylinder for cleaning. Even without an ultrasonic cleaner, its just easier all around.
All the single-action guys understood that benefit a very long time ago.
You may not know how much recoil is happening in a self-defense situation, but all the training required to make that situation less problematic will reveal how much recoil is happening with magnums.
I love the idea of being able to remove the cylinder for cleaning👍 its sounds a bit lite weight for full power loads. I've carried a Ruger Sp101 for years because the weight of the revolver helps with the recoil of full power loads, but it looks interesting. 6 shots definitely a plus👍
I'd consider buying one if I could also buy spare parts. I.E. every internal part, the initial fear for the old timers will be parts availability years into the future..paperweight fear if you will. This aside, the revolver looks like it fits a neat niche of small 6 shot revolver similarly sized to kimbers K6
Like with old Colt D frames which lost timing between fewer rounds than others, and especially the SF VI end of the lineage made only in 1999.

Great price! I really hope you plan to bring this to California. Seems like revolvers have an easier time getting on the roster.
.357 mag , 2 in barrel , 22 oz, yeah that get a lot of range use. (maybe with .38 spl).

Looks really nice, although I never understand such short barrels with 357
It blows 9mm out of the water from a 5" barrel. If you're only going to shoot it a couple times in a self-defense act that will never actually happen, then why not?
Concealed carry
Such small .357s are really .38s that happen to chamber Magnums for special circumstances.
Let me help you out:
Buffalo Bore 125gr Hornady XTP shot from a 2-inch Taurus 605: 1,479 fps/607 ft-lb.
Longer barrel, it only gets better from there.
That same load in a GP100 with 6-inch barrel: 1,707 fps / 809 ft-lb.
That same load in a Marlin 1894 lever-action rifle with 18.5-inch barrel: 2,298 fps / 1,466 ft-lb.

Looks promising…But it’s gonna be tough to overtake my S&W 66-2 & Ruger Security Six snubs.
Understandable, as I share your favor for those two classics. But this SDR appears much better for concealed carry (weight, frame size, sights), whereas the heavier S&W and Ruger are doubtless easier on the shooter using stouter loads, especially for extended range sessions. Biggest question for me will be quality of execution of the SDR, which remains to be seen.

@@d.mangham5204 Agreed. If the shooter intends to use magnums, in my opinion, having about a 30oz medium-framed piece is much more controllable. .38+p is easier to deal with in such a low-weight revolver.
Alternately, there's .327 Federal Magnum which has much less recoil but still stomps on 9mm in the performance department, with only a 1.87" barrel. You still get 6-shots (Ruger LCR, Taurus 327).

Heres the problem I have, I am a fan of Diamondback and their customer service is top notch but the issue I have is they cant even get their existing product to run reliably. I had to send my DB380 back 4 different times, they replaced it on the second trip and the replacement went back twice. I wanted to do a review on the new Gen 4 DB380 but I had to send it back before I could film it. In the end they decided to give me a refund which I'm greatful for. My point is DB should really focus on making their existing product reliable and fixing their reputation. My opinion in a nutshell? Aside from the reliability issues the DB380 is what the Glock 42 should have been. As for their new revolver, I hope they got the bugs worked out but I wont be trying one until I know its 100% reliable.
Valid. Yet it seems they spent a heap of money on manufacturing equipment to start this venture. Hope they turn a new leaf with this.
If they make interchangeable cylinders to accept moonclips for 9mm, this will wipe competitors
In my opinion: No. Taurus is a cheaper option that can be smithed down. It's too expensive for what it is & the ergonomics appears top heavy like Kimber, Ruger & Taurus.
It's a block gun of a revolver. Rock Island has a cheaper life time warranty Colt D frame look a like that can be refined.
No revolver is as accurate as a good pistol because the cylinder slam, gap & forcing cone activity changes ballistics in ways not possible in a pistol.
6 or more shot cylinders make hard extraction compared to 5. It's not a good thing being they don't come out of holsters as fast as 5 & are more prone to snagging.
Semi-auto cartridges in a revolver: many think it's dumb. Reasons? Moon clips are flimsy, sharp, and a pain to reload/unload. If a revolver has built-in extractor tabs in the cylinder mechanism (Korth), then it's not a problem. Otherwise it's a cartridge being used in a place it wasn't designed to be used. It's like a rimmed cartridge trying to function in a semi-auto (not a single TRULY reliable example has ever been made, outside .22LR).
The exception is single-action revolvers which head-space the cartridge at the mouth, not the rim. Those are always extracted one-at-a-time no matter what is being fired. Ruger makes several "convertible" models for .357mag/9mm, 45 Colt/45acp.

With 9mm ammo being plentiful and less expensive, I wish there were more 9mm options for revolvers

Definitely seems influenced by the other company's revolver but with a smaller trigger guard and removable cylinder and crane to potentially avoid legal liability?
Hopefully the barrel dimensions are like the Korth if they want to get get the best out of a 9mm/380 acp version in the future?
The removable cylinder and crane could make for easier cleaning but my concern is that if you have it holstered tightly that if the button is pushed just enough during the draw stroke that the cylinder might not be seated properly thus taking your revolver out of the engagement.
I think the cylinder can only be removed when it’s swung out 🤔

@@TheRhinestoneHurricane Has to clear the barrel and frame somehow. Taurus has had a push-button cylinder swap feature on some models for some time now. Korth also.
Otherwise, single-action revolvers were designed this way from the very beginning, but aren't a desirable conceal-carry option for the most part.
In my opinion: It's not the lightest 357 anything on the market & they're not fun to shoot either until you have at least a 3" barrel.
Tell me about the crane spool. Is it bent like the Ruger & Smith& Wesson junk? Or is it straight & true to its bolt like a Colt D frame?
Guys need to make one low in the hand like a box wood grip J frame, with a 4" old police like pencil barrel & rear adjustable combat sight. That would be the most versatile everything revolver & stop it with top heavy grip on a block of a gun.

Looks alot like the EAA Windicator
The Windicator has years of history behind it and a lower msrp.
Ruger LCR or Super GP100 cylinder scalloping. Hints of Kimber K6S. Design features like Korth Mongoose. Taurus has a push button cylinder swap on some models.
Taurus makes small and light 6-shot. Rossi has a 6-shot small-ish magnum. Rock Island Armory has a Czech imported small 6-shot. Colt's King Cobra is smaller than a Smith & Wesson K-frame, but is a bit heavier. And if you are interested in less recoil but 9mm-surpassing power, look into Ruger's LCR in .327 Federal Magnum.
Need to nail down what speed loader will work worth it. The guy said J frame not that is not Possible.
At the very least Zeta6 K-clip loaders will work I am sure, likely HKS-DS (A) speedloaders will work, speedloaders for K6s too, though Model 10s might not or be iffy.
@@DanTheWolfman Dan Wolfman, again you are correct, the old Bronx cops packed Detective Specials as seconds to the S&W Model 10 because the HKS speed loaders for both worked in either, the cylinder dimensions were close enough. I kept a Colt D frame, have a couple of K frame Smiths, and just got the Kimber K6XS and the holsters for the small guns and all the HKS speed loaders between all 3 guns work fine without any jiggling or forcing.
6 shot J frame? In 38/357? I don't think so.... Maybe a 6 shot K or L frame speedloader. I would figure a K frame speedloader.
Perhaps a Colt D frame speed loader.

Colt King Cobra frame size is bit smaller than S&W K-frame, but bigger than J-frame or Ruger LCR size.
Personally, I'd favor the 6-shot LCR in .327 Magnum.

Good question, but DiamondBack is the name of the manufacturer not the model so they are good. Diamondback also makes decent ar15s as well

I did a thorough on this SDR, turned out to be right about taking J-frame Grips, wonder if they will put the 3 finger Hardwood Hogue combat grips in with this. Please get me one to T&E @DiamondbackFirearms I got the buzz going for you! I will run Gabe White Dark Pin Bill Drill Runs All A-zone with .357 Golden Saber (may need the overmolded to cover the backstrap not sure until I try a few times) I am also showcasing how the regular Sidekick still looks great with awesome Rosewood Birdshead Grips from @PremiumYunGrips Wednesday. YES YES we want 9mm Cylinders w TK Custom Moon Clips Add on Package very badly (so will LE Officers/Depts so they can authorise use same dept issued ammo for Backup/Offduty FYI), and a 3" version coming with a 3 finger Hardwood Combat Grip for looks and Overmolded Rubber for shooting .357!
Dan, would an auxiliary cylinder require finesse fitting by a master pistolsmith specific to the gun or would these just be drop 'em ins ?

Super light and .357 Magnum don't really go together, imo... 🤷🏻♂️ And realistically this is only 1 or 2 ounces lighter than a Kimber K6s.
I don't consider anything in compact revolver frames truly "magnum" revolvers, at least not in the .357 caliber. Sure, they'll fire magnums..... until the thing eventually gets knocked to bits from the stress. These guns are the reason why munitions companies have backed down the power of the .357 magnum to "moderate" levels. Originally this beast of a cartridge was meant to hit 1525 fps from a 8-3/8" barrel with 158gr projectiles. Hardly anything these days achieves that, outside smaller boutique brands.
Run a steady diet of 125gr Buffalo Bore through your LCR, J-frame, SDR, K6S, Taurus 605, King Cobra, and a few others in the small or small/medium size revolvers and watch stuff start going bad... if you don't break your hand first.

@@exothermal.sprocket But what about the Ruger SP101? 🤔 It might be one of the only small framed revolvers that can handle a steady diet of full-power Magnums, I'm thinking... It doesn't have a side plate like the others. I've fired some hot Underwood Ammo self-defense hollow points through mine before (a 3" model), and it seems to hold up just fine... Obviously with heavier recoil though. I've never fired anything super heavy through it though - like black bear loads (as it's just a carry gun). But I'm getting away from firing so many Magnums through my revolvers these days - as they can wear them out more quickly... .38 Special primarily, for target practice.
@@carlosmorris4510 It is the exception, but in the following way:
It weighs about the same as a full sized polymer .40 or .45 caliber semi-auto, it's larger framed than a LCR or J-frame or Taurus 605 or Colt Cobra. It's got a lot of metal for a 5-shot and 3-point lockup. It's not really a pocket pistol, even if people have made exceptions to that. Yes it will deal with full house magnums just as well as GP100. It's going to beat up your hand doing so.
Probably only way I'd buy an SP101 is in a 3-inch .327 Mag configuration and use it as a primary conceal. Otherwise, 5-shot is too few for the bulk and size, it's too heavy to be handy and too small to be as controllable as stuff slightly bigger (which weigh about as much with higher ammo capacity). It's the 'tweener that I can't place in the market of other options. Nothing wrong with it at all, it's just a bit fringe by comparison.
@@exothermal.sprocket Yeah it is admittedly a bit fringe... A 'little big gun', lol. Low capacity and heavy for it's size (although it doesn't seem heavy to me). It doesn't seem to beat up my hand though (maybe that's just me); it's mass seems to absorb the blast when firing very well. It's a little odd, perhaps; some people like it and others don't... 😀 It's unique.

Hey @DiamondbackFirearms Regarding Speedloaders At the very least my friends at Zeta6 K-clip loaders (& K-Pack 2's put together also easy throw in pocket or leather belt pouch) will work fairly well I believe & they are at Shot hook up with them, also likely HKS-DS (A) speedloaders for Detective Special will work ( a tiny bit of sanding may help them even better), speedloaders for K6s too, Model 10s will likely work well enough too though others I mentioned evern better. Please get back to me when you can I sent emails that should have been forwarded. Having the lightest 6-shot .357 that is thin enough for pocket carry with usable sights and trigger is HUGE! But, just fyi I do believe you will get really nice add on sales later if you offer 9mm Cylinders w TK Custom Moon Clips package say $99 if you can manage that. A 2" 9mm Snub with hot 124 like Punch/Vcrown or 124 +p HST will get the same velocity as a 3.2" Auto w way less recoil than .357 basically splitting .38/.357. From a 3" barrel it will get about 4.25" auto velocity splitting G19/G17 so 1165ish standard/1200-1225ish 124+p. 9mm revolvers don't suck. Punch in 2" and 124+p HST in 3" definitely won't suck. I wish you all the success, and if you can plan on the next evolution to bring 9mm cylinders and 3" to Shot 2025 that will guarantee your success with this. Just say we are open to future possibilities. Again, give me a little practice (might need the overmolden grip or at least some goon tape covering the tang) and I will run Gabe White Standards Dark Pin Passes with either 125 gr Golden Saber or Critical Defense.
Speed strips are universal and work in everything all the time. Like loading loose cartridges out of a pocket or pouch. Experimenting with a doggie treat belt pouch as an ammo carrier. Discreet and roomy. Sneaky Pete, ya listening ?
@richardkluesek4301 Two Zeta 6 Kpack 2's inserted together way faster. The Kclip may fit this and they are small and easy to throw a couple in the pockets.
