- I get asked this ALL the time so it's time we covered how to do studio dog photography in a small space. AKA in-home studio photography with dogs, AKA teeny tiny space and making it work!
Welcome! Today we shoot two dogs, Alfredo (Alf) and Pippi (Piper), in my living room set up as a dog photography studio with a bright seamless paper background; that gives us a floor area of about 2.2m x 2.1m. Hi Jess. Thanks for the video and stream. Really is a credit to you. I like to take dog portraits for fun "ametuer" here. When my confidence is high I sometimes ask if I can try and take some portraits of the home owners dog where I have been working (Plasterer). So these would be taken in the same situations as in this video. So this was great for me. I use the one light and a reflector mostly. Might try two after this.

Hi Jess, Can’t thank you enough for your wonderful content! I’m in the middle of your OAOCPC course and loving it!
I will be doing a puppy shoot in a few weeks at the breeders home, with a small set up as such as you’re in home studio. The pups will be around 4-5 weeks old. The plan was a white backdrop, with a small wicker basket to place the pups in. However, you warned of using a white backdrop in such a small space. What challenges would I be facing. I have plenty of time to rethink this. The breeder is 2 hours from me, so going back to reshoot really won’t be an option if things don’t go well! Want to get this right for her!
You could do white but shot as light grey without any issues in a small space 😊

Great video thank you. I doubt anyone will see this but my dogs in basically the same setup have a yellow cast under the chin in much the same way as the picture in the thumbnail for this video.
How would you go about correcting this in lightroom?

Hi there, amazing video. I’m a little unsure what the black background was for at 10:48, why was it needed if the yellow background was still visible for the final images? Please advise and thanks so much!! Love your channel.
To ensure full control of the light, and the only light the camera sees are the ones you've added 😎

@@ThatPhotographySpot please do!!! My biggest struggle at the moment is getting my lights setup properly. I feel so silly for not being able to grasp it as easily as everyone seems to.
Also, do you go through a lot of paper backdrops? I try and be as careful with the backdrops and reuse as much as i can as they are quite expensive at this stage. Any tips for making it last as long as possible?
@@pbg1068 It's not easy - so don't think you're silly! Once you "get it" and understand it, it becomes second nature. Light placement really varies based on style, modifiers you have and space available, so just experiment. You can always set up a stuffed animal and have a notepad to hand. Then, as you shoot, note down where the lights were for each shot. Afterwards you can study the light and really understand what happens when they move ☺️
@@pbg1068 Hard floor underneath, well taped and don't allow dogs to be scatty on top of the paper. Other than that unfortunately it is what it is. You can always purchase floor props, so either a faux wood floor, large boxes or have the dogs on a large, solid table with a covering that is the (exact) same colour as the backdrop (space issue here though), that way, you only use the paper as the literal background, no dogs access it with their little feets!

These were quite wide because of the teeny space, the lens was a 24-70 2.8 but closer to 35/50mm I would imagine!
Would be more helpful if you could do it with more basic/affordable equipment like umbrellas and speedlight

Im struggling to find paper backdrops where I live. I found a large yellow microfibre backdrop (1.8 x 2.7m), would this yield similar results? Sorry if you’ve explained this many times!

Hey Jess! Loving your videos! Thank you. Would two 300w continuous lights be ok? Or better off with one Godox AD600Pro or two AD300Pro's? I'm basically scared to use flash and scare dogs and cats. I did watch your video on desensitising, which was awesome!

product photography is a different niche entirely. There are different setups for every niche, experiment and have some fun with it to find out what works for you 😊

I just have a quick question about continuous lighting - is it any good? I have a couple of different paper backgrounds, decent light stands, umbrellas, but when I went to purchase lights I let them talk me into continuous led lights because I hadn’t ever tried shooting with flashes, strobes.
Are continuous lights rubbish or do I have a chance of pulling off some okay shots as I practice and save money for strobes?
Continuous is ok, but you’ll just need to experiment for settings as you will be mixing ambient light sources ☺️

Great tutorial thanks for sharing, I did a shoot recently with my dog in a room with white walls and laminate flooring how do you avoid the colour of the flooring bouncing back in the dog?
It's next to impossible to avoid but you can use a colour cast removal technique to retouch it afterwards, like this one: ruclips.net/video/0oueHlK6fKs/видео.html

Hey Malcolm, probably not a full stop, but I’d give a little extra to help with lifting shadows in post - maybe half stop?
Thank you for your video Jess. I really enjoy your style. I also have an small home studio, but my backdrop consists in a foldable black and white backdrop. I like the style of Rhiannon Buckle and Ralph Hargarten, and I am trying to get that subtle "ball of light" behind the dogs, that gives a nice separation. I am not sure about the technique they use, illuminating the backdrop with a strobe or photoshoping it. Do you think is good idea to have a grey background and replace it later, in post, or is better to have different paper backdrops and try to get the effect with a strobe? In other hand, what brand of (durable) paper would you recommend?

Hey Elipe, throwing light on the backgrouns in such a small space and getting even lighting is tricky. The ideal setup is either a light directly behind the dog on a low power (space problem here) or above (again, space). Therefore, you'd probably be best achieving it in post production, using either radial filters in LR/Camera Raw or spot colour gradients in Photoshop. Hope that helps with that Q!

Forgot to add Elipe - no paper is durable sadly, nature of the beast! It is, however, hygienic and relatively easy to manage. Other plus for me is no ironing required! 😉

Hey Chicca, this is such a tricky one because it’s been a while since I was last purchasing and I don’t want to recommend something I haven’t tried. However, there’s one good place to start and that’s with speedlights, I reckon you could get 2, the stands and modifiers for £200 if you’re smart about it. Check out this blog post from years ago - I recently updated the links: www.thatdogspot.co.uk/how-to-dog-photography-with-a-speedlight/ - you can always look on eBay for cheap softboxes for speed lights and as soon as you’re able, do try to upgrade 😊

Hi this video was just so great. One question, should I get a paper backdrop or material backdrop? Because the material ones on Amazon seem much, much cheaper than paper especially if you want to buy a few different colours.
Cheaper isn't always better, especially when it comes to backdrops. You can try both and see what you think though!

How do you photograph cats?
Pretty much the same, but with toys and movement instead of noises (mostly). Cats are easier if they're popped higher up (usually) - if gives you an extra millisecond before they bail out!
I am looking at getting a strobe and cant find any reviews on the strobes that you use. I did find a youtube video (photomart) where they say they are £390 but following the links they are £660. Do you still recommended these? and how to you trigger the strobes and flashes together? as I already have a couple of yongnuo flashes.
No, I would definitely now recommend the Godox range of strobes - they're great kit and awesome value for money!

hello are the flashes compatible sony ?
Well apparently not Dominique, but they would be if paired with a PocketWizard. However, I was all prepared to buy these other things for my new Sony, then I actually tried it and they worked fine with my Sony A7RIII paired with the Nikon trigger. I have a friend who has the same lights but a Canon trigger and she has had no joy. I only use my lights on manual, not TTL, so for me I don't mine that TTL won't work - the manual works fine for me!
