  • Andy lays bare his bag, to give you an exclusive look at the kit he uses on a day to day basis to capture his amazing dog photography.
    We visit Andy at his home as he opens up his camera bag, to give us a rundown of the gear he uses to capture his amazing images. Before getting to the kit, Andy explains the importance of protecting yourself as well as your equipment, as he spends most of his time lying on the ground to capture the dogs at their level. Nothing ruins your shoot like being cold and wet, and it can really affect your photography.
    Even though Andy now uses top of the range cameras, he explains how he started with lower end cameras and doing so really helped him hone his skills rather than relying on the camera. He then explains the lenses he cannot live without, and the steps he takes to protect these essential pieces of kit. Protecting the images is the most important thing when on a shoot, and Andy shares the steps he takes to protect his memory cards before wrapping up with his choice of speedlites.
    Equipment: 2x Canon 1DX, Canon 70-200mm mkii, Canon 24-70mm mkii, Canon 16-35mm, Hoya UV Filter, 2x Canon 580EX II, Pelican Memory Card Case, Lowepro Flipside 500aw, Lowepro Top Loader Pro,

    Even though this is a 3yrs old video, I still find this very helpful. I have recently picked up dog shooting as a side hustle and your guide is really helpful for me to get started. Thank you.

    Andy is such a fantastic guy, I love how he says how lucky he is to have the cameras he does. There is so much showing off with kit at times in the photography world so its nice to see such a humble guy, so talented as well! I really love his ethos about how expensive kit doesn't make you a good photographer, your skill and passion does :)

    Hi just bought a CANON EOS 90D DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens and trying to work out the best settings to take a portrait picture of my dog. Any tips? I'm literally a beginner and chose this as an future proof kit for a hobby because of the dogs I have. Just working my way round

    Morning! Great tips thanks, hopefully I'll get nice shots of our lovely working cocker very soon. Quick question: I use a Canon 80D with a Tamron 150-600mm G2, what's your views on filters for such long lenses? A lot of people say it ruins an already imperfect picture at max range. Cheers!

    • @ThePhotographerAcademy
      @ThePhotographerAcademy  4 года назад +2

      We don't and have not encountered any of our trainers using filters on that length of lens

    Where do you keep the camera bag when taking pictures with one of the bodies? Is it within arms reach ? In the car? On your back?

    Thank you for an excellent basics compilation. That very last point to not keep upgrading unless it's with profits from selling photographs is such an important one right now in my opinion. Current culture seems all about 'insta-grat(ification)', suggesting that unless yo have the best of the best you are a bad photographer :)
    Thanks again. I think the only thing more difficult than dogs would be children and cats :D
