The Story behind the Shoot: A Lonely Night Out

- In this video, I tell you all about my latest analog photo set that I shot together with Munich Models. The idea was to show a beautiful young woman on a night out. She enters a classic bar, dressed to attract attention. Yet, as the evening progresses, she remains alone. Her melancholic eyes scan the room while she takes sip after sip from her drink. What's her story?

These really look like stills from a short film. Great camera, great model, great photographer, great location! :-)
Many thanks!
Having watched all your videos to date, this and "The Follower" are my personal favourites. I like it because The stories are great. The images created are great. The videography is great. 👏👏👏
Very nice to hear how you went about this. Also beautiful model and photographs. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This one was done beautifully , u should do more black and white . This look reminds me of billy wilders the lost weekend
Fantastic set of images! Really really well done. Glad to see you using Tri-X too. 😊
Beautifully and professionally created images. I have looked at this several times. I have learned new techniques. Thank you. RS. Canada
These photos relly communicate and are thought provoking, thanks!!!
Outstanding from start to finish.
Superb lighting and metering. Interesting as well
Beautiful photos and great story behind them. You definitely nailed it.
Everything about this project is stunning. The model, your photography and the story. Spectacular Max!
Too bad the audio volume was low, but it did not matter.
wow..stunning
Great work! I love metering on the hightlights and let the blacks going where they want to be. It´s so mysterious what´s in the blacks might be....
Absolutely stunning!
Wow! You captured the atmosphere perfectly
Great video. Thanks, Max!
I love this set of images! They convey the story you explained extremely well, and are all around fantastic images! I've been thoroughly inspired! :D
Perfect job as always...Keep going. Thank you!
Wow! Gorgeous photos on Tri-X! I never would'v e thought to use Tri-X for portraiture. Bravo!
Incredible photos. The way you shot this is just incredible. Bravo.
Beautiful stuff Max
Extraordinary amazing!!!! Congrats!!!
Beautiful photographs!
Great story, beautiful model and a gorgeous set of pictures. Some of them reminded me of the work of Dave Heath.
I could barely hear your commentary even when I turned up my volume way up. Usually the soft deep crooning quality of your voice is a highlight of the film but only when I can actually hear it. Awesome photos and story behind the shoot.
I really loved this Max. Stunning shots and great atmosphere! Bravo
Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. :)
Loved the walk-through on vision and process. Great choice of Tri-X with her outfit (black) and the loss of detail in the shadows. All well done!
Thanks a lot for your kind comment. I really appreciate it! :)
Max I love your videos, there is plenty of great information. great job!
Thanks for your kind comment. I really appreciate it. :)
Continuous light - nice, has a different look to flash
Love it!
Thanks so much for your feedback. Glad you like it. :)
Really appreciate your videos, keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for your kind words. I really appreciate it. :)
Long live film!!!
That was some sick metering. Probably the best B&W photos I've seen from any youtube channel. I would love to watch a video on how you did the metering and how you exposed to ride the edge of underexposure. (that's if you don't mind giving up some pro secrets, haha). those photos made my day.
Wonderful pictures, wonderful model, wonderful video. This is "story telling" photography at it's finest.
Best regards
Klaus
Thanks so much for your comment, Klaus. It means a lot to me. Really glad you like it! :)
another great video max beautiful location 👍👍👍👍
Thanks a lot! Always appreciate your feedback. :)
Tolles Video mal wieder und klasse Bilder. Mir gefallen die Kontraste und die dunklen Tiefen sehr gut! Toll umgesetzt :)
Really nice set and story!
Thanks a lot. :)
Wow, for me the far best shot and pictures so far!Not only the beautiful model, but especially the play with the light, the tonality of the bw colours, the setting of the scenery.Thats absolutely fantastic! We don't need a Lindbergh exposition visit, we need a vernissage of you Max very soon with your best pics of the last half year.👍
I have to agree. Absolutely NAILED the exposure Max! Plenty of contrast without clipping anything. Love it!
Excellent! You are going to be one of the greatest photographers from this century!
Thanks so much, Will! Well, I don't know about that. ;)
great job max! what is some good advice you would give to do a shoot in a setting like this? who do you approach? what do you say? this something you should expect to pay ? i would love to try a shooting like this!
Hi max, great job as always, do you will make videos shooting on digital some day?
Richtig gut Max!!
Danke, Tim! Freut mich sehr, dass du hier vorbeischaust. Weiß ich zu schätzen. :)
Klasse, richtig gut!
Dankeschön! Freut mich sehr.
Really inspiring video and enjoyed how you told the whole story! Have you always used the prism viewfinder with the Mamiya? Do you think it's a must?
Thanks for your kind comment, Atte! Really appreciate it. Yes, in my opinion you should have both viewfinders for the RZ, depending on which kind of situation you're facing and which kind of atmosphere you would like to create during a portrait session. I talk a bit more about this in my review of the camera which you can find here: ruclips.net/video/TfOVWchK62k/видео.html
Hi Max! I recently discovered your channel on my search for a medium format camera, and I am enjoying your content very much. I really like these series of images and I think the mood and tone is excellent. I would like to have seen a few shots where she wasn't holding the wine glass though, I felt like she was holding the glass too much. Would've been nice to see her staring off lost in thought and almost forgotten about the wine glass and the man she was trying to attract, maybe thinking about a past lover. :-)
A question about your metering, which I always find tricky indoors with window light. Could you explain exactly how you metered for this, what direction you were facing the bulb, where you were holding the light meter etc. Your exposure in all these shot really is really excellent and makes the image. I love the dark blacks!
Thanks Sean
Hi Sean! Thanks so much for your elaborate comment and, again, please excuse my late response.
I can completely see your point about some additional images where she is not holding the glass.
Regarding the metering: I used my Gossen Starlite 2 as a spot meter to get my exposure as intended. I occasionally double-checked it prior to taking the shot with my digital Leica T and the exact same settings. I also provided my lab with the digital test shots to ensure that they know the direction I am aiming for (dark blacks etc.). Because of all that, I didn't have to edit much for the final scans. Hope this helps.
I just can't get enough of your work it never ceases to amaze me by its quality, construct, thought and artistic interpretation. May I ask, do you and Jules sit down, write a story board, and break down all the lighting for each shot. Or do you have a rough idea of the look you and know what equipment you need for that look and discuss the shots as you go along? I do very little portrait work as I prefer landscapes (analogue) and wildlife (digital) but I could look at your work all day long. The way you work the light, and know exactly the look you want etc blows my mind. I think it's little wonder that good models want to work with you, I can honestly say no other portrait photographer on RUclips either analogue or digital has had the impact your work does. Daft question, do you call yourself a "portrait" or "lifestyle/life story" photographer?
Mark Harris Thank you for your wonderful comment. This is very kind of you.
Well, I usually have a clear vision in mind and write a concept for important shoots like this one. I don't write a storyboard but usually have one or two key shots in mind that I would like to get. Everything else is created on the fly.
In this particular case, Jules and I used the time that Isabel spent in hair & makeup to work the location and do some quick tests. I also wrote down which positions I wanted to cover in order to make the transitions between the locations during the actual shoot as smooth as possible. Besides that, I trust my visual instinct and spontaneous creativity during a shoot.
With regard to your other question, I find it very hard to put a label on my photography since I am also very fond of street photography (not covered here, in part for legal reasons) and increasingly landscape as well. So let's just say I'm currently trying out new things and move beyond portrait photography. :)
Thank you very much for your comprehensive answer, it was kind of you to take the time.
Technical question Max - At these rather slow speeds (1/30) did you use mirror lock up at all? Again, fantastic work.
Thanks for your good question. At first I also thought that I should use mirror lock up in this case but Jules encouraged me to shoot without it and he was right. You can easily go down to 1/15s or even 1/8s with the RZ67 when shooting from a tripod. Everything slower than that should better be done using mirror lock up and a cable release. Hope this helps.
That was just awesome! Very nice lighting, and such a great mood that you've captured! One question tho, did she ever leave the bar? ;)
Elias Thanks for your kind comment. Actually you hit the nail since the original set continued with her leaving the bar frustrated and going home. For this we shot one or two rolls outside with Isabel walking in the streets and ending with her entering an entrance door to one of the houses. The set was originally supposed to end with the closed door. But due to the afternoon light and overall brightness I decided to leave these shots out for the final set. Nevertheless you can find some of these shots on Isabel's and my Instagram if you're interested.
Good spot! Sorry for not mentioning it in the video.
MAX+ONE Portrait Photography ooh I see, those are some very nice shots! Keep on doing what you do! And you got one more follower ;)
Great photos! I really like seeing the process behind creating shoots like these.
My one suggestion is to check the volume for your microphone. Your voice seems really quiet to me.
Thanks for your comment and reminding me to look into the audio level issue of my microphone. I'll try recording with a different app next time and see whether this brings about improvements. :)
Great! Found you in Instagram =)
Great content as always! I really enjoy it. It is not the typical video of some folks walking around the street taking some random shots. There is an effort, a story and an ambient that you want to get. Hope your channel keeps growing!
Joan Gili Suárez Thanks a lot for your kind comment. Well, Jules and I occasionally also do videos in that direction but always try to combine it with relevant content or a camera review. ;)
MAX+ONE Portrait Photography yes yes ive seen all the videos. My favorites are going crazy and Minolta 1.2 shots
Oh, wow. Thanks! :)
Sehr schöne Bilder! Gar keine Frage. Weiter so!
Weiß also genau, was du meinst. ;)
You need to boost that volume a bit. Or call yourself the analog whisperer. Whichever...
Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately, the app which came with my microphone recorded in a rather low volume than other apps for the iPhone and it took me some time to figure that out. All my new videos feature louder audio. So please excuse my "whispering" in this older video. :)
No problem :) Just wanted you to know, so you can fix it and I can continue watching your nice videos :) Keep up the nice work
All good. Thanks for letting me know. :)
I like the shots ... very beautiful girl. But on 50% of photos she looks happy. On these shots I don't feel that she is lonely and sad. But again, nice shots in general.
Why are you whispering? I ran out of volume.
Great story behind the shoot, but one thing though.. it's not believable! how can such a fine pretty young woman be sad and alone in this world?! totally just kidding... and maybe that's the question and intrigue around this young lady you're trying to invoke?
I think you achieved the look and mood you set out for very well. Lovely shots, all of them.
I'm no expert, just an enthusiastic observer, and if I had to make a slightly less positive comment, I would say for the last 2 shots you showed towards the end, I felt maybe the background around the model could have been darker.. but, it's kind of tricky cause you don't want her to totally get lost in darkness with the wall in the background.. not sure?.. perhaps some creative lighting tricks may have been able to emphasize the model with the basic exposure you have on her and locally around her, but somehow drop more of the background away more into darkness? maybe some post vignetting edits to achieve this?.. I like all the shots, but just feel the last two weren't quite as deep in the darkness or contrast as the preceding ones and look different... the last two shots are still nice shots, but to me, just a bit less moody compared to all the prior images.
Well done, none the less.
