Story behind the Shoot: Bedroom Portraits (4x5" with Linhof Technika)

- In this video, I show my current long-time project entitled "Bedroom Portraits" which I am shooting on 4x5 inch film with my recently purchased Linhof Technika. I take you behind the scenes during one of the shoots, show how the resulting four sheets of Ilford HP5+ are developed in Kodak D-76 and finally share some of the other portraits from the series so far. Please let me know in the comment section whether you would like to see more large format videos in the future.

By accident, I discovered your channel while looking for Pancro 400 reviews. What a refreshing way of doing this kind of videos! Granted, I just saw two of them, but nevertheless ... very relaxed, not the typical American pumped up way of doing things. Suits the subject matter better ... analog photography is a slow thing anyway. Definitely will check out more!

Thanks for the lovely comment. Well, actually Jules and I spend quite some time hanging out with a cup of coffee (usually instead of tea) discussing film photography. In this case we did just that and did the finishing touches on the previous video before starting to film this one.

Max, the image at 7:10 quite beautiful everything just right! Keep on keeping on what you're doing it's all Good. 4×5 ok but be sure not to leave out 35mm! Nice product placement with the M3. Your last video Jules shot was interesting Daring! Two 4x5 sheets great location beautiful shot. You guys are so inspiring!

Sure, I won’t forget about 35mm. I’m currently on a little trip to Dresden and only brought two 35mm cameras (the Leica M3 and Minolta XD7) and I recently shot an entire portrait session on 35mm. So I’m currently drawn to the extremes (large format and 35mm) after focusing on medium format for quite some time.

I love large format, and my first assistants job involved working with Sinar 5x4 and 10x8.

Nicely done as always! I was just looking at a Linhof Technika III which looks very similar to the camera you were using! I don't really feel confident to really evaluate the operating condition of the one I was looking at but it had three lenses. One appeared to be the same as you're using in the video. If not the one I was looking at, I hope to have the opportunity to try a nice working copy out someday!
Yep more of this stuff and more doing portraits with LF. Love that soft look you are getting. Focal length here? quite wide angle I guess?

Analog Insights I also shoot film I should have bronica gs-1 6x7 absolutely love the look of film. Your story behind the birch tree shoot really like that one that's probably my favorite one of your videos keep producing them and I'll keep watching them.

Great Video per usual. I'm in increasing danger of trying 4x5 after watching this. I've used 6x6, 6x4.5, 6x9 for my large format so far. hmmm
Great vid.
I would add a shutter release cord thingy, would mean that you have less chance of moving the lens out of focus when you make the exposure. Great idea by the way, good luck with the series. In the studio I worked in, 1979-1985, we had deep tank processing and would keep using the developer, I think we used Ifords ID11 at the time if we couldn't get hold of D76, we mixed it up from powder. then we used Ilfofix. Tri-X pan was the film of choice in 120 format and occasionally Pan F which was phenomenal in 120
No problem with a sturdy tripod and the Technika that has a very effective focus lock lever

Oh dear, please get a shutter release, or 2. You spent money on a Linhoff. Spend 1/1000th of that on a couple of releases. Now that I'm done freaking out, good video boss!

great video, and nice portraits!, love the HP-5+ look, the contrast between light and shadow wow! one thing would you reccomend this for beginners, even with light-meters!, as AM realy liking this look.

kb5ql Haha 😆 I actually own a pretty nice cable release but usually prefer using the Linhof without it. But you’re right. That’s not necessarily a good habit. ;)

yes very nice to see that the Linhof Technika is still being used.but remember ; develop a film is-- the time - the temperatur and the "movement" from your filmdevelopertank ! for black/white it works the way you work but for color neg./positiv film you better buy a developermachine for equal results.used by ebay -- Jobo Colorprocessor CPA --Jobo CPP2.--and and ....do not throw chemicals in the sink.......wish you all the best
Congratulations for 5000 followers and good luck for "new" channel. Large format photography is definitely interesting for me. So it would be nice to see more videos about large format photography. But I'm not so sure if I like this kind of portraits. For me they are much too close. The models are really beautiful but I find it difficult to reduce them to such a close and unforgiving head shot. I did a lot of pictures in an equal location in the past be I prefer a wider picture with more surroundings. It gives the picture more atmosphere.
Alexander Kirsch Thanks for your comment and support. I should probably have mentioned in the video that the shots with the Linhof are only the very last shots I take. That’s also why the M3 and RZ67 are sitting on the floor or windowsill in the background. For all of these models exists a beautiful set of analog photographs with quite a variety of images. I obviously don’t invite people over to take only four photographs. 😂

Prajem krásny deň ,dlho som uvažoval na reagovanie na vaše videa práca s velkoformátovou kamerou Linhof .Sám vlastním kamreru Linhof Vl a obj. 3,5/135mm. Naposledy som pracoval z uvedenou kamerou pred 18 rokmi. Vaše videá ma nakopli používať a pracovať s klasickým filmom. Na videu kde ste propagovali Linhof pri fotení antického chrámu ste mohli použiť dvíhanie objektívu na vyrovnanie zvislíc ,pri portrétoch ste mohli kompozíciu vycentrovať posunom objektívu do strán resp. hore a dole .Páčila sa mi aj pripomienka o správnom uvoľnení kábla. I napriek tomu vám želám veľa dobrých nápadov a ďalších videí k propagácii práce s klasickou kamerou. Ako sa u nás hovorí Dobré svetlo.

Get a Speed Graphic for the ability to choose between film plane and leaf shutters, and for sheer reliability.

I'm always happy to see anything you produce Max. Thanks for this one, and that's the best looking Technika III I've seen too. It appears to be a late model III. Have you upgraded the ground glass? My original glass is so dark, and nowhere near as good as the later versions. I'm mostly using a model V now. .. I have to admit that I bought this Technika off eBay and got really lucky from what Jules and I understand (as it was really cheap as well). The ground glass is perfectly fine, but I don't know whether the previous owner upgraded it or not. Glad to hear that you own a model V by now. Pretty nice!

Thank you also, for the brief developing demonstration. I have seen tanks like you are using but have no experience with them. I mostly use a drum for processing prints.

did you image stabilize yoir head movements at the start?
Hey Azriel! Good spot. Unfortunately, our Lumix decided to apply its image stabilization rules to my head movements during the introduction. Jules noticed that and changed the settings afterwards but I decided to stick with this introduction and don't record another one. I hope it's not too annoying. :)

In this case, I digitalized the images at professional lab/photo studio that happens to have a proper Heidelberg scanner. Digitizing these negatives like that is incredibly expensive but really worth it in my opinion.
Great concept and video. I seemed to have noticed a bit of film reticulation with a couple of the images. Did you have all your chemicals at the same temperature for all of your image development instances?
No, there were definitely slight differences in temperature and also the available light and hence shutter speeds in the first place. :) But I don't mind these differences.
That's one way to get women into your bedroom :) kidding aside great project love the black and white photos. More large format projects please!

curlyAllan Thanks for your comment. In this case, I had the negatives scanned on a beautiful Heidelberg Topaz 2 at a neighborhood photo lab and edited the TIF files to my liking.
oh I was looking for the linhof brand videos to understand how they can sell. Was not expecting masochism though :-X (The procedure is overly complicated)
Great video, like all you make. I found that this portraits look softer than if you use Mamiya 6x7 Do you agree? It seems old style to me which is not bad at all.
My father was a "gallery" fotographer and his early works look very similar tho this shots. in his twenty final years as a professional he Used two Mamiyas 6x7. So I can tell. the difference. Congratulations for your good work
Hi Max, eine interessante Episode mit schönen Frauen, klasse Kamera, sehr gut komponiert. Ich habe trotzdem das Gefühl, dass die eingesetze Brennweite des Objektivs das Gesicht des Models - ich rede nur Zarah, weil sie auch live vor der Kamera zu sehen ist - nicht korrekt und damit weniger vorteilhaft dargestellt ist. Ihr Gesicht wirkt auf dem Video viel schlanker als auf den Bildern. Ich glaube der Abstand zum Gesicht war zu kurz bzw. dem dem Framing wäre eine längere Brennweite besser gewesen..

so I would like to know why you do not use a stronger tripod, a cable release and why you wouldn't try have all the head sizes the same ( same framing ) Like the idea, good luck with it
great video. I'm no large format expert, don't know if you can change lenses on that camera but maybe you should try a longer lens, being that close with a normal lens, the face seems seems slightly distorted to me (maybe that's what you're looking for).

Thanks for your comment and please excuse my late response. In my case, it is the T mode. Newer lenses/setups have a dedicated feature that lets you simply open up the lens for composing and focusing without using the T mode.
What app do you use for development times?

keep large format for epic landscapes in my opinion, the time lost connecting with the person ultimately negates the epic negatives large format can give you. great vid though, thanks for sharing.
Are you worried processing with all those chemicals in your kitchen (where presumably you cook)? Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'd move all the other stuff, used for cooking. Just wondering, not criticizing.
