those color shots are just OUTSTANDING
Excellent film Max. Have to say, Sofia was very impressive. She is hard as nails and very very professional. Personally I really like the double exposure but understand it’s probably not what you planned. The black and white portraits are gorgeous and the stand out shots for me.
I just saw your crazy shoot and now this one. Even though I've been a subscriber for a while I didn't know about this series. Clearly you're both an excellent presenter and a great photographer too. Well done! Kudos to Sophia for being such a good sport in very light clothing in frigid conditions. Keep it coming.
Thank you for your kind comment. Really appreciate it.
A lot of respect for the brave model. Hope she was paid well for this shot...
Thanks for your comment. This was a test shoot, so neither the model nor I got paid for it. :)
WoW! Another great video Max! You and Sophia are certainly troopers braving the cold. I admire how your error with the double exposure resulted to a beautiful concept. Well done and looking forward to the next! Cheers!
My first reaction when I saw your double exposure was WOW very creative and I was surprise to hear you say that you missed your shot. Maybe this is not what you had visualize but I think it is still a very nice shot
I am in awe of the professional stamina of Sophia (as well as all her great ideas about wardrobe, make-up, posing, etc), the superb videography of Jules, and, above all, the beautiful photographs. As always, great work. I understand why the double exposure doesn’t work for you but, for my part, it stands on its own as an interesting image.
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment. This means a lot to everyone involved in this shoot. Cheers! :) Glad to hear that you still like the double exposure. :)
Your shots are stunning. I really enjoyed the story behind the images. Huge Kudo's to the model!!
Thanks so much for your kind comment. Makes me happy to hear that! :)
Well done! Whenever somebody says film is dead: Just look at these photos..they turned out beautiful..Danke!
So many great shots! Lovely model, beautiful!
After subjecting poor Sophia to all that snow and cold, you should've asked her out as a thank you for putting up with it so well!!! :D Taken her to a nice restaurant as "compensation" for freezing like she did. The way she conducted herself through the shoot is a testament to her professionalism as a model and good nature as a person. And, you did well, too.
This is hands down my favorite photography channel. Your content and production value is top notch. Great video! Looking forward to more.
Thanks soooo much for your kind words. Jules and I really appreciate the praise. Makes us happy to read this and we're glad you like our little videos. :)
Kudos to Sophia for her strength and bravery in that environment. Outstanding images.
Wonderful video as usual Max! Great shoot and thanks to your review of the EOS 30, I managed to find one and love it!
Lovely images. I even like that double exposure. Very creative and beautiful.
Beautiful images. Great video as always max
Amamzing photographs!
I don’t know what you’d visualised for the double exposure - but I really like the effect you did create. I think it’s really interesting......and I don’t normally like double exposures!
Great video Max! I love Germany! I was stationed in Mannheim for two years, I wishI could have stayed forever. I look forward to your videos!
Thanks so much for your comment, Alicia. Glad to hear that you enjoyed being here in Germany so much back then. :)
It's always a pleasure seeing your thought process on these images. Cheers.
Thanks, that's very kind of you. :)
Much respect to the model for taking on the cold, no hollywood/insta model would even dare attempt that.
Super schöne Fotos!! Tolles ausdrucksstarkes hübsches und toughes Model :)
Dankeschön! :)
A wonderful video, beautiful photos and a very professional and tough model. I appreciate that you show where and why it didn't work as intended either.
Hi Max. Been a subscriber to your channel from the beginning and have always enjoyed the content. This for me was by far your strongest image set. The photos are incredibly beautiful and the model/location is amazing. That 85mm f1.8 is just a stellar lens. Great work.
Wayne Lorimer Oh wow! This comment really means a lot to me. Thank you so much! 🙏🏻😅 I am really glad you like it so much.
Great stuff as usual guys! You had a love of really lovely shots with shallow depth of field. Kudos to the model for toughing out the shots - I think the results made it worth it.
Thanks so much for your kind words and feedback. Really appreciate it! :)
That's really brave for the model, just walking barefoot like it's nothing in the snow! Great contact and mood in all the images
Super video Max and Jules, one of my favourites in fact. You struck gold with Sophia, she did a fantastic job for you, and your photos of her are really lovely. I particularly like the colour photos on Portra 400. Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce your excellent videos. Great work.
Thank you for taking the time to write this comment and share your appreciation. That's very kind of you. Thanks! :)
Great video & awesome Images.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think this is your best video and work yet. Amazing portraits and talented model.
Eric Redard Thanks. This means a lot to me.
All exquisite...!!! Thanks... ✨
What a lovely and very professional model, this video is so well produced, a joy to watch thank you
Thanks for your kind comment. I really appreciate it. :)
Your photography here is quite lovely. I mean your own skill to get a feeling, a mood. It doesn't hurt of course to have a beautiful model but you've captured someth8ing quite lovely and respectful. Well done
It's such a great Content. The models, the music, the look and the story....i like your videos so much. Hope a new episode is in production :)
Great shoot!
I love the Canon EOS 7e/7n both deliver beautiful results with the Tamron SP 45mm F1.8 Di VC USD. I loved your results! Great work my friend!
Amazing shots , you motive me to go out and shoot. Side note I almost spit my food at some moments of the video when I saw the model barefoot in the snow I can only imagine how cold she was , but that's professional model I guess, she can endure a lot of stuff :D
Sophia is awesome! Excellent Model, lovely hairs and facial expression, Max.
I liked very much the development of his very professional video, with an explicit way of communicating about the camera and the use of the film rolls as well as his liking of the beautiful professional model, she has element style., emphasizing the help she gave her wearing her wardrobe with her poses very natural despite the weather conditions. Thank you so much for sharing what you do with the analog cameras. by the way excellent portrait shots and excellent Model. Kind Regards from México.
Thanks so much for your kind comment. We really appreciate it. :)
Beautiful shots of a beautiful model in a beautiful setting. So fantastisch!
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate it. :)
Ich mag einfach das Format. Tolles Video. Kompliment auch an das Model.
Vielen Dank! Das freut uns sehr. :)
Perfect.
Love this channel, the quality of the content and visual presentation is top notch and Max is the best photography blogger (vlogger??) on youtube.
Are Germans tougher than us? I could not bear being barefoot like that, glad to know she is doing fine. Love the quality of work in this channel!!!
Wow, those 85mm shots are stunning. I am mainly a black & white fan, but those colour tones were beautiful. Great choice of model too, such a natural beauty. Thank you for sharing this :)
Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life Thanks for your kind feedback. Really appreciate it and glad you like the color shots as well. :)
Nice Work and Hope She didn't suffer from Cold . Take care.
BRAVI! Well done! Sophia needs an applause for braving the weather & still maintaining her demure/professionalism (did I notice a tear on her right cheek around 11:30 mins? Added to the emotion of the portraits).
Great location, love the whole snowy woodland feel, playing with the tones. How was it balancing for light with the snow? Welcome back & nice start! keep clicking keep inspiring xx
i know im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Jedidiah Pablo Instablaster :)
@Esteban Nicolas thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Esteban Nicolas It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
@Jedidiah Pablo glad I could help :)
Wonderful portraits as always, Max! I especially like the black and white shots in the black dress. They really pop with the contrast to the snow. Was the single tear from the cold? Either way that shot was amazing! Lastly the image at 13:16 is my favorite from the entire set, truly wonderful capture.
Nick Exposed Thanks so much for your comment, Nick. I really appreciate that you took the time to watch the video. Glad you liked the black and white shots. Yes, the tear was from the cold and I instantly told her not to brush it away but took a few shots of it instead. My favorite one made it into the video. :)
Saw on Instagram that you’re currently sick in bed. Get well soon!
Beautiful set, beautiful model too! I actualy dig your double exposure, it's very interesting even if you did not get what you were hoping for... Cheers from Canada!
Thanks for your kind comment. That's nice! Glad you like it anyways. :)
And, I'm jealous that you're in Canada. I used to study at UBC in Vancouver back in the days... :)
Oh cool! I've never been to BC though! I'm on the other side of Canada.. I'm in Montreal, Quebec :) Let me know if you're ever in the area . Cheers!
Gaetan Cormier Wonderful. One of my former girlfriends was from Montreal. :)
well done!
da sieht man die leidensfähigkeit von guten Models.
very beautiful!
Thanks a lot, Nora! :)
Hi Max! Great video! I love these behind the scenes series you have. They have inspired some of my work! I was wondering if you do your own developing and scanning or if you send it out to a lab? The results are truely amazing every time. You realy are a great photographer and have a great gift at that. Don't ever stop!
Best whishes,
António Tomás.
nice shoot!
Was waiting for the video :)
Glad to hear that. I hope we didn't disappoint you. :)
I'm very much attracted to the pull in @ 8:23/14:27 - the cinch & dress. It seems to distill alot that pertains to this shoot.
I really like the look of the Minolta lens here combined with the Portra 400. For years, that was my main travel lens and it does such a fine job here. I always thought the TMax 100 had a more milky, ethereal quality to it--the 400 always struck me as rather harsh by comparison and I rarely shot with it. It looks good here, but I wonder if the 100 would have even added more, much like what the beautiful quality of the Portra does with the color. Perhaps there was not enough light to shoot with the 100 though. I mainly shot Ilford films through the years as I found them more flexible in exposure and processing and typically easier to print. I did love the look of the TMax 100 if you had enough light to get it to sing.
Thanks for your comment. And yes, I mostly agree. The T-Max 100 is wonderful and would have been my preference. But, unfortunately, I didn't have enough light to get solid shutter speeds at a reasonable aperture. I am also very fond of Ilford films and use them a lot. :)
Hi Max. Just wanted to understand why you chose t-Max for this portrait shoot as I know you love Ilford B7W film. Would the Ilford produce similar results or would it struggle and if so for what reason. Keep up the good work and would love to see you do a vid on film processing etc. Cheers Julian UK
Hi Julian. Thanks for your interesting comment. To be honest, I regretted not using Ilford Delta 400 instead as I was not completely satisfied with the results the T-Max 400 produced here. Yet, generally speaking, I use both Kodak and Ilford films by now. It really depends on the purpose and sometimes even my mood. Still particularly love HP5+ (especially 120) and FP4+ (120 and 35mm) as well as Delta 100 (for 35mm).
beautiful images max.
very informative video.
one thing i would want to suggest to make your double or multi exposure shots a little easier with less camera tinkering which could cause movement that results in miss aligning your frames, use your Canon EOS 30V instead. all you need to do before taking the first double exposure shot is to go to the function settings and select the multi exposure function and set how many exposure you want (maximum of 9 multiple exposures). then when you take the first exposure the camera wont advance the film and you can take the next exposure. the numbers of exposures you have set and taken will be displayed on the top LCD screen. no need to push any rewind button on the bottom of the camera or crank the film advance lever like on the older slrs (your dad's minolta). this will reduce the risk of the camera movements that causes miss aligning your framing composition. you could also use the 2 sec. delay timer on the Canon EOS 30V instead of using a remote or electronic release cable release to further lessen the possible camera shake.
looking forward to your next videos!
Thanks so much for your elaborate comment and suggestion. I was literally not aware of the fact that I could have used the 30V instead. I would have still needed an additional fitting lens but, of course, you are completely right. Thanks!
I love the black & white images. Kodak is not a film stock that I have used, I tend to prefer Fujifilm. Perhaps I will give it a go. Did you do much in post on the black & white or is that how the images look on the negs?
Thanks for your comment. The images were regularly scanned with some contrast adjustments but nothing special.
Hey Max, I'm a big fan I just want to know when you shoot your Porta 160 do you scan it and print it or do you just print directly off the negatives?
Hi! In this case I shot Portra 400, not 160. I rely on the service of my trusted lab www.meinfilmlab.de for this kind of portfolio work (s. video description). They scan directly off the negative with professional Noritsu and Fuji Frontier scanners.
Salute
I think photographers should match the clothes of their models - especially in the Winter. At least then, they would be sharing the experience!
Wayne Pilling I generally tend to agree and you can often see me adapting to my model’s style but not in this case. ;)
@@AnalogInsights I don't know Max, I think you'd look pretty cool in a white dress! 😂
DANG! Sophia is so cold her dress turns BLACK!
Can you please ask Kodak to bring back Kodachrome for my new Leica MP?
hi my friend! just a question, when you shoot portra 400 and shoot it at iso 320, does it get developed as 320 or 400 film? Also, when you rate it at 320 and NOT 400, in what way are the colors changed?
I love this shoot.
Thanks for your comment, Kevin. One small correction: As mentioned in the video, I rated the film at ISO 200, effectively over-exposing the film by one stop. The film gets developed with regular C41 development, so as if it were rated at ISO 400. Kodak Portra 400 (and some other films) can be easily over-exposed by up to three stops and still render great results. In the right light, the over-exposure shifts the film's colors a bit and creates a unique pastel look. Please also see the Canon 30V review or "Bathing Sun" (Story behind the shoot) video for similar examples where the film was rated at ISO 100. Hope this helps.
How many rolls of film did you use on this shoot? And where do you get your film developed and scanned?
Thanks for your comment and sorry about my late response. In this case, I shot seven rolls (4 black and white and 3 Portras although I didn't finish the Portra inside the Minolta) and had it scanned and developed at www.meinfilmlab.de. I always provide the scan & dev information in the video description as well. :)
Hope this helps.
Really like you channel. Make more videos bro
If, using medium format it's definitely an argument for multiple film backs
Not sure why she had to be barefoot in the snow while you're shooting portraits (for example during the first minute) - but obviously it worked, the results are great.
Have you sold your Minolta 58mm 1.2? I just wonder if you prefer the 35mm 1.8 cose is wider or cose it is easier to focus.
Joan Gili Suárez Thanks for your comment. No, I still have my 58mm f/1.2 lens but I wanted a wide angle to complement the 85mm lens. I might do a review of the 35mm lens as well. :)
I have a question. Where do you do find models? Do you find them on Instagram or something and ask them? How do you ask them? I’m sorry I am not experienced in shooting with models but I really want to know!
Banklock01 I mostly cooperate with agencies by now. Sometimes models find me or I find them via Instagram. If you’re starting out, you might want to check out so-called time for print (TfP) groups on Facebook in your city to find amateur models and get started. There are also dedicated websites for amateur models and photographers in many countries. Hope this helps.
Lol screwed up on screwing the cable release
Get your model some white, down-filled booties to wear in the snow! $25 will buy a lot of good will and eliminate a lot of shivering.
eric moss Please see Sophia’s and my responses to the other comment below.
Okay, you seriously owe that model. The images were stunning but you could have at least let her keep her shoes on as they were out of frame for most of the images.
Yes, we are good friends by now. :)
As mentioned in another response, we kept the model warm enough at all times and rushed her back to her apartment right after the shoot with the car heater at full warmth and the seat heating on. Within minutes she was in the bathtub and reported that she is good. She didn't get sick afterwards or anything like that.
Furthermore, we had discussed the topic of appropriate shoes prior to the shoot and, after quite some consideration, she decided for barefoot.
wow she's barefoot in the snow, thays some serious effort!!
12:12 For some reason!? you did not use the cable!? I know the reason! You're blinded by her amazing natural beauty! Normal! :-) I would also have been nervous in this case....hahaha...
Why the hell does she need to be barefoot in the snow? ! Thats just inappropriate, reckless and abusive. The feet and the head are primary locations for body heat loss. AT the very least you could have given her some cushioned ballet slippers ....They arent even head to toe shots
Please relax. We kept her warm enough at all times and rushed her back to her apartment right after the shoot with the car heater at full warmth and the seat heating on. Within minutes she was in the bathtub and reported that she is good. She didn't get sick afterwards or anything like that.
Furthermore, we had discussed the topic of appropriate shoes prior to the shoot and, after quite some consideration, she decided for barefoot.
Hey Jamie. I am flattered by your concern about my health, but i was not pressured to do any of those things. i decided, that not wearing shoes would fit the atmosphere pretty good. And the outcome rewards the, to be honest, moderate "suffering". best regards, Sophia
ah ok. Yeah hes a great photographer, regardless. Just Ive had a relative get a pnuemonia from similar weather exposure , and had to dunk him in ice water to bring his fever down.
It is very kind of you to be concerned, very sweet indeed! However, Sophia the model made a choice here, she was completely apprised of what the shoot entailed and decided to take on the job, and I can't imagine Max or Jules being abusive and negligent towards their models. As professionals, everyone in the shoot was fully aware of what was involved and it went ahead. In spite of the freezing weather, I would say everyone did very well, what beautiful images.
Film Nut What's the point of being barefoot ? There weren't even any full body shots. Frankly I still think it's reckless irregardless of a good photo . It served no purpose on any practical level
