    I had a RZ67 Mk 2 with the electronic viewfinder so it was Aperture Priority auto exposure so it was virtually identical to my Nikon FE2. I used a 180mm lens on the RZ and a 85mm lens on the FE2. The main difference between the two cameras was WEIGHT!!! But the RZ was very well balanced. I mostly shot portraits and weddings using Fuji Portra 400 ISO colour negative film. The results ie. the sharpness were sensational. I used a tripod if possible but when shooting with a soft box or umbrella it was not necessary because the RZ like the FE2 had a flash sync speed I think of 1/250 sec. I have scanned the colour negatives and the results are superb. I had friends who used Kodak VPS in Hasselblads and the results were the same ie. both superb. Viewed on a computer monitor the scans and resulting images are as good as any digital camera today - I have a Nikon D7200 which is excellent and a Nikon D800 now but they are no better in terms of image quality, but auto focus in the digital cameras is great, ditto for the higher ISO capability and image stabilisation etc etc!

    Great camera. I am working with a Yashica MAT 124 at the moment to slow down the pace with all the digital stuff. I worked with a Minolta XD7 in the past. Great review and photos. Keep up the great work!

    This camera was featured in Frasier S10E06 as the Scheerblad-7X-K. It featured an ultra bright flash that blinded anybody in its wake :) I paused the episode and found this, which makes it cool to know what the photos would look like from the prop used. Cheers.

    Nice video! I, too, love my RZ67 Pro ll camera. I'm beginning to use it more often due to the size of the negative (I love getting enlarged prints of special subjects). I always use a tripod due to its weight, plus, it slows me down so I can concentrate more before clicking the shutter. It's a great camera. Thanks for posting this video on the RZ.

    Oh, Max. Amazing video. Thank you so much. I wanted this camera so much, when I started shooting film (about 4 years ago) but I was really expensive for me at the time. Then I decided to have my new dream camera - Pentax 67 :) There's something about Pentax I can't explain, but it doesn't let me sleep in the night :)) Thank you again, I love your videos

      Thank you for your comment. I am glad you liked this video.
      I certainly intend to take a closer look at the Pentax 67 at some point as well. I've been quite intrigued by it for some time and would love to hear about your experience with the camera. Do you own the second version or the original one? Does the wooden grip really make sense? Which lenses would you recommend?
      It would be great if you could share some of your thoughts.

    • @TheNo85307

      MAX+ONE Portrait Photography Unfortunately I've never bought Pentax 67. I'm not shooting that much in these days, because of the lack of time I have. It's a such a shame, because I fell in love with that camera and it's a definitely my dream one. I hope that one day I will just buy it and enjoy every single frame with it

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  8 лет назад

      Ah, I see. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Since I'm quite familiar with "purchasing dilemmas" like the one you are describing, I can only highly recommend just buying the camera sooner than later and enjoying it as long as possible. :)
      You can always sell it again in case you don't use it or don't happen to like it as much as expected.

      @kornelijesajler9063 8 лет назад +1

      I think for what you do, portrait, the Pentax 6x7 is much better (I also never had it). I own Mamiya RZ67 and for what I do, is better to me. The pros for Mamiya RZ is revolving back, having ability to change multiple backs, and it is cheaper. I think everything else in on Pentax side, as far as I know it has fastest 6x7 lens (105mm f2.4), and most of them are faster than Mamiya RZ67. This 2.8 exists: 75mm, 90mm, 150mm and 165mm. Which you would very much appreciate for portraits. Also widest 35mm and longest 1000mm lens. And Pentax is easier to shoot, it is more like usual SLR. If you watch Matt Day youtube channel you can see review of Pentax 67, he converted from Mamiya RZ67, because it suits him best. I still like my Mamiya, mostly because of pros I've mentioned. I really like modular cameras and I'm shooting on tripod so I have no need for Pentax.

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  8 лет назад

      Yes, I know Matt's channel very well and I am a huge fan of his. I will certainly take a closer look at the Pentax 67 (II) at some point. For now, the Mamiya with its interchangeable viewfinders and modular construction serves me well. As I have mentioned in one of my videos, it is very important for me to be able to switch to a waist-level viewfinder if the situation allows it. In my (limited) experience, this can make quite a difference if you don't work with professional models. Subjects usually feel much more at ease if you're not hiding behind a huge camera. But with respect to the available lens set as well as the overall handling and size of the camera, the Pentax 67 is definitely worth considering for a portrait shooter like me. Thanks!

    Hi, I was wondering if the RB67 supports 4x5 too? And also how would these two be like for landscapes? (Ignoring weight, I can handle carrying two Nikon F4s and a DSLR with several lenses already).
    Also which Polaroid back supports today's Impossible Polaroid film? I see that there are different Polaroid backs and I am not familiar with Polaroid (new to film here and in process of switching to it). And finally, are the digital backs for the RZ67 only?

    • @Ryan-lc4bl
      @Ryan-lc4bl 3 года назад

      I don't think so, the RB67 is, afterall, a medium format roll film camera, but there were some sheet film backs for it.
      4×5" instant film isn't made anymore, so they've become useless nowadays.
      The actual area of the frame is 76×76mm.
      The RB67/RZ67 are really good for landscape photography, probably as good as any camera gets, before you get into large format.
      It's quite heavy (2.4kg/5.5lbs), but managable if it's not coming off the tripod very often (carrying it in a backpack wouldn't be too cumbersome).
      4×5" cameras actually weight a lot less than either RB/RZ67 or almost any other MF SLR, as they're just made of a wooden frame with a cloth bellows, and a lens board.
      The downside is the cost of film (a lot higher with 4×5"), and availability of films (not many to choose from), so 120 roll film is much more versatile and cheaper.

    Thanks for the informative video. I thought about getting one for the superb IQ but the size and weight are just too much as I'm in the field a lot. I finally settled on a Bronica GS-1. Excellent lenses, relatively light and small for a 6x7. I tried the Pentax 6x7 but the shutter is way too loud. Too bad because it handles very nicely.

    Hi, Max. Great video as always, do you have any idea where to find the 4x5 film holder for this Mamiya. I just bought one and I´m also really interested in 4x5 film.

    • @milesian1
      @milesian1 4 года назад +1

      I think Max is mistaken about the format of Polaroid backs for this system. It does not cover 4x5 film, and a 4x5 back will not mount on this camera. That said, Polaroid backs are available for the RZ system, although Fujifilm no longer produces the peel apart film that goes with it.

    • @Ava-wu4qp
      @Ava-wu4qp 4 года назад

      @@milesian1 the 4x5 back IS the Polaroid back. The image does not completely cover the 4x5 film. while you can technically still find 4x5 Polaroid film to use- good luck. you'd be better off trying to rig something so that you can shoot Polaroid i-type film with the camera.

    • @milesian1
      @milesian1 4 года назад

      @@Ava-wu4qp I don't think so. I have owned an RB67 with Polaroid back, 4x5 Linhof and Speed Graphic cameras with Polaroid backs, and currently have an RZ67 with Polaroid back. There are Polaroid backs available for RB and RZ cameras, but they are not the same as 4x5 Polaroid backs, which are made to fit 4x5 size peel apart film.
      Anyone that has film like Fujifilm FP-100C or FP-3000B and wants to shoot it with the RZ should search for "RZ67 Polaroid back." Good luck finding the film if you don't have any in cold storage.

    I appreciated this video a lot. I recently acquired the same camera/lens/ae finder in great condition, and it is a blast. I'm also using an L-grip on it when I take it outside. BTW, I also have an M645 Pro TL that looks identical to yours. I'm finding that shooting film again is very rewarding. Thanks for this. -BRK

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  7 лет назад

      Bruce Kraft Thanks a lot for your comment. Glad to hear you have such a similar setup as I do and also enjoy it so much. :) I'll take a closer look at that L grip. Can you recommend using it? Any disadvantages?

    • @brucekraft744
      @brucekraft744 7 лет назад +2

      They make at least a couple of different L-grips. The one I have on my RZ67 uses the electronic remote release connector at the lower left front. I also have a C330 TLR with a completely mechanical release on the grip, and it also fits the RZ67 and activates the mechanical shutter at the lower right front. Disadvantage of either is a bit more weight & bulk, but I find that greatly outweighed by the improvement in handling when hand holding the camera. I recommend the Mamiya brand grips because they have pins on either side of the tripod screw that fit into two matching holes on the bottom of the camera body. This provides a very solid, stable mounting and very confident handling. Both grips have cold-shoe flash mounts which is handy for fill flash or a flash trigger. -BRK

      Bruce Kraft Perfect. Thanks for your advice. I'll take a closer look at the Mamiya grips then. :)

    Quick question, I have that exact combo on order from eBay except without the prism finder.
    How easy or hard is it to use a waist level finder with a tripod?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  7 лет назад +3

      Hey Tod, sorry about my late response. Using the camera with a waist level viewfinder on a tripod naturally limits you in terms of the height that you can shoot it from as you need to be able to look down into the viewfinder from above. For landscape images, this shouldn't be a problem, but for portraits I would highly recommend getting a prism finder as well. Otherwise you would need to step onto a chair or something in order to be high enough. :)

  • @seanfshannon
    @seanfshannon 6 лет назад +4

    Love the skin tones of the colour images. How were you exposing?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 лет назад +2

      That's the classic Kodak Portra look, slightly over-exposed. ;)
      I usually spot-meter for the shadows underneath the model's chin and then often rate Portra 400 at ISO 200 or even 100, all depending on the amount and quality of the available light.

    Hi! I was thinking about getting started in medium format. The RB67 may be a good option. Can I use that 110 2.8 with the RB? Very great video!

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks a lot for your comment and glad to hear that you're getting into medium format. You cannot use the 110 f/2.8 lens on the RB67. The RZ67 is compatible to older RB lenses, not the other way around. For the RB67, there is no equivalent 110mm lens, yet there are two 127mm lenses available that are apparently very good and should serve you well as standard lenses. You can learn more about the available RB67 lenses here:
      rb67.helluin.org/lenses/
      www.mamiyaleaf.com/legacy_RB67.asp
      You might want to consider taking a look at the Mamiya 645 series or a 6x6 medium format camera such as a Hasselblad, Rolleiflex or cheaper alternatives as well. I have some other videos in my channel about cameras that might be interesting to you.

      Thank you very much for the help! I saw that the RB was pretty cheap compared to other brand like Hasselblad, then i like the 6x7 format more than the 6x6 or 6x4.5. I really like the 110mm, so I think I may search for a RZ because the lens is much faster: Thanks!

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  8 лет назад +1

      Glad I could help you a bit with your decision. But please note that an aperture of 2.8 gives you an extremely shallow depth of field on medium format cameras. Depending on the distance to your subject, it is almost impossible to get perfect focus on the eyes if there's some movement involved. So a 3.5 aperture is usually perfectly fine.
      There are even many professional PhaseOne users who deliberately shoot with 3.5 or less to ensure that their shots are in focus. We are really talking millimeters here. :)

    • @mr.f4497
      @mr.f4497 8 лет назад

      Thank you! Does the RB have a light meter or should i buy the prism viewfinder?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  8 лет назад

      The RB is a fully mechanical camera with no light meter at all. So there is no built-in light meter or a prism finder featuring a light meter. As is typical for some cameras from that time, you either have to meter manually using a hand-held light meter or guess your exposure using the sunny 16 rule. So if you're looking for a camera of that size and with the 6x7 format, you should go for the RZ67. If smaller rangefinder cameras would also be an option, take a look at the Mamiya 7 or the Plaubel Makina 67. If an SLR construction would be an option, you should consider buying a Pentax 67II (again, the earlier models do not have a built-in light meter but there is one available for the prism of the earlier versions). Not an easy task to settle on your preferred 6x7 medium format camera, I know. :)

      Gary Bowen Thanks for your comment. As indicated in the video (and I believe also in some other comment), I feel like the camera slows down the session and often affects my subjects in a positive fashion. As always, qualitative informations presented right here. Plus, better audio quality with the microphone. Good video

    is the vibration from the mirror a problem/ drawback for this camera

    • @AnalogInsights

      No, not at all. In addition, at least my version (the Mamiya RZ67 Pro II) has a mirror lockup mode. You can take a look at the manual if you're interested in that: www.mamiyaleaf.com/assets/files/documentation/RZ67PROII_Instr.pdf

    Another commenter(/tor?) with a "purchasing dilemma" here, haha. I've actually been looking at a Bronica GS-1 because I know they are smaller and lighter than either the Pentax or the Mamiya, which would make them better for street photography. But there is so little information about them online, and the much-lauded RB67 tends to cost about the same. Plus I like the idea of bellows focusing--would you say that allows you to get closer to the subject?
    I think the real problem is that I just want to own EVERY camera.

      Haha, thanks for your comment, Eric. I'm afraid you're not the only person with a "gear acquisition syndrome" around here. I haven't tested the Bronica GS-1 and therefore can't provide you with a reasonable piece of advice. Nevertheless, I can certainly recommend the RB67 and bellows focusing as it does indeed naturally allow you to get very close to your subject. Of course, with actual models you have to bear in mind that it feels uncomfortable at some point, but for close ups of items in the street or nature, it's pretty nice.
      I hope this helps a little bit. :)

      Eric Houge I'm sure no one would notice you as much when you're shooting from the chest with a modular box camera vs a SLR type.

      There are many available on eBay at the time of me posting this, one in "mint" condition from "Konny Camera Japan" for $1099USD. I'm not affiliated, I'm just a frickin' nerd. Cheers.

    As an accessory to this camera I believe Mamiya sold you a mule or ox to carry it.
