The Story behind the Shoot: Slaughterhouse Dance Floor

  • In this video, I talk about spontaneity and constraint (time/cold) during a portrait session. In this case, I wanted to portray a dancer on a snowy slaughterhouse dance floor. Since we had -10° Celsius and had to rush quite a bit, I only shot 6 rolls of medium format film. Take a look at how it turned out.

    Max, use a monopod with the Mamiya, it will take away the stress from your arms and steady the camera while at the same time you remain mobile. Beautiful an brave model, nice work as well!

    I love the way the pictures turned up. I'm more of a landscape and wild-life shooter, not knowing much about working with a model, so I appreciate a lot the journal/reportage style of your shooting videos. Plenty other photographers go on and on about how awesome their camera system is and how I ought to have it. So it makes it that much more enjoyable to put that to the side and hear more about "the process"; how it went during the shoot, what happened in particular, what worked/didn't work...

    Klasse Arbeit mal wieder! Bei den Temperaturen ist das wirklich außergewöhnlich gut :)
    Danke für die Info zur Einstellung des Belichtungsmessers Gerade bei Schnee und den Gegenlichtaufnahmen ist das mit einem dia film eine große Herausforderung! Sehr stark!!

      Wow, danke für deinen Kommentar. Weiß ich sehr zu schätzen! Ja, war etwas mutig, zeigt aber auch, wie gut man sich auf den Prismenfinder der RZ verlassen kann. :)

    Great vid! quick question, have you ever worked with male models? If so, what unique challenges come with working with male models?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your comment and please excuse my late response. I actually only worked with male models twice. On these occasions, I couldn't pinpoint any unique challenges. I simply have more/better ideas for women than for men.

    Thank you so much for show your art and the equipment you use having just starting using a Mamiya RZ67 pro II I wondered if I could pull it off with different locations. At first I thought you were using a digital back because how quickly you were moving.. Well done Sir... Well done!!!

    Big Max how are you? Let me ask you something, this was a challenging shoot all around, but what is usually challenging for me is if I'm shooting a snowy environment the snow is usually Overexposed as I try to expose for the subject. What I usually might do is underexpose the image because it's easier to bring up the blacks. What is your technique for making sure you have some detail left in the snow?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks so much for your comment and please excuse my incredibly late response. I've been busy lately and only now come around to responding to comments. Well, in this case I completely relied on the built-in light meter of the RZ prism finder which worked surprisingly well. But you are right, while I usually expose for the shadows by spot metering on the shadows underneath my subject's chin, I would get correct exposure when facing such a snowy environment in order to retain details. I usually try to avoid underexposure as it often changes the character of a film too much for my taste.

    For mine the colour shots work best. That Fuji Provia must be like gold with dwindling supplies.

    Max! Loving this series! Don’t stop! Basically binging on behind the scenes story.
    P.s.: got on to your insta account (you and franziska) :) do you have a Flickr account? It’s easier to see your photographs on the iPad ie fully appreciate them.

      Hey Hugo! Please excuse my incredibly late response. I've been quite busy lately and lack behind on answering comments. Thanks so much for your kind words!
      With respect to your question:
      No, unfortunately I don't have a Flickr account but you might want to take a look at my website (www.maxplusone.net). Due to my current lack of time, my website is also not really up to date and still misses all my photo sets from this spring and summer. Sorry about that. :)

    Some really beautiful shots. Shame about the truck. As a filmmaker, I feel your pain.
    Question about the shoot - did you use flash or reflectors? Or a tripod?

    • @AnalogInsights

      Thanks for your kind comment. :)
      No, I didn't use any flash, reflector or tripod. I always point it out in the video if I do. :)

    Hello Max,
    cool pictures! I have a question about the slide film. Is the prism finder of the RZ good enough for slide film? Have you used the exposure compensation? Spot or average metering? Because you have to nail the exposure on slide film. I asking this detailed questions because I a bought a prism finder for my RZ recently and Kodak Ektachrome is coming back... ;-)
    Kind Regards,
    Alex

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks a lot for your comment. Yes, the prism finder's light meter was spot on in this case. As mentioned in the video, I heavily relied on it for that particular shoot (only when shooting the slide film). Fortunately, the Mamiya prism finders (including this one) often feature not only spot and average metering but an intelligent additional function in between that takes both spot and average metering into consideration. I used this setting in this case since I had to handle all the light bouncing off the snow on the floor and the background. I am really glad about the result. Hope that helps!

    once again, great video and pictures! however, i would like to say this: once, i did an outdoor photo shoot with a model who was dressed with a dress but the temperature was around +10 degrees and i felt that we rushed a lot to take the pictures :S since then, i never did the same again as the weather conditions were too "strict". good job for doing this!

      photographicalexperiments Thanks for your comment and kind words. I know exactly what you mean. I usually would have postponed the shoot as well but since I had shot with Hannah before, I knew that she could deal with it. :)
