Bought one of these exact models brand new a few weeks ago. It's a blast. I live in an area with a lot of 25 mph - 35 mph roads, and it does very well. I feel like I'm driving something from a Mario Kart game when I ride. It scales the two-wheel experience down.
I bought my Ruck new in 2017. Have done no major mods to it but it is customized to my needs! I installed after market big rack on the back, kinda like the old Honda Trail 90. Purchased plastic saddlebags off of eBay and a friend installed them and wired the rear turn signals into the bags, along with using the stock signals, so folks can see that I am planning on turning. Mounted a water bottle carrier on the left side of the handle bars. Put rock guards on the front headlights, a Chase Harper red tubular tool bag on the small front rack, and a red Chase Harper under the seat storage bag, both easy installs. That under-seat bag is great as I have room to store a toolkit, my rain poncho, my cable and lock system, and more! Seat is red, bags are red, wrapped the Speedo with red tape, added red foam grip covers and lever covers, so the basic color scheme is red and white with some black trim. Needed more room to carry groceries so I found a folding plastic red and black crate that I zip tied to the oversized rear rack. It works great, up when I need it and only 1.5 inches thick when folded down. I also put a hook to carry a plastic bag on the white front battery cover. Though I have not altered any of the running gear, I have still made it my own style.
I love my 2017 purchased new Ruckus, classic red and white Honda scooter! I have kept some items stock and made minor cosmetic changes. Added a set of plastic bags. To do that, I purchased a larger aftermarket rear rack, spray painted it white, bags are white, had lights on bags converted to turn signals as I did not like the small turn signals on the back of the Ruckus. Under the seat option is a new wire french fry basket that fit perfectly! So I can carry lock and chain, first aid kit, etc. Bags are small but I carry 1 gallon gas can on one side, poncho and tire plug kit on the other side. Added a water bottle holder on the handle bars, and a barrel bag above the lights on that tiny rack, to carry my sunglasses, gloves, towel, etc. Also added a small black bag on handlebars on the side opposite the water bottle holder, for chapstick and a pair of fingerless gloves. I call it my "white bumblebee" Ruckus! HA HA I get 90 mpg on regular gas, full throttle in town at 35-37 mph. I will never buy an ev bicycle, scooter, or car! I have had had Honda 750s and an 1800 Goldwing, and this thing is more fun than all of them put together! BTW, I am 73 years old and living life large! LOL
I forgot to mention, with that larger rack, I found a folding plastic crate on eBay, fits perfect so it is flat when I just ride but if I need to carry groceries, gear, etc., I can pop that thing up and have a carrier...I used heavy duty zip ties to put it on the rack!
the ruckus model hasn’t changed because it’s designed with a classic style, and customization in mind all while maintaining an easy to use, minimalist base upon purchase. they have a perfect moped to give owners endless personalizing options. since it’s release, the ruckus has created a following of die hards most of which have a truly personal relationship with their bike, because it is “THEIR” bike that no one else has.
100%! Bikes that fit that to a T are the ones that become legendary models for Honda and gain a cult like following, similar to the Grom and so many others.
Yeah I bought mine brand new in 2009, I'm pretty sure it was 1500 but it mighta been 1800. Anyways, I went through 4 engines and countless modifications. I built a new exhaust for every new engine. I built all my mods from scratch or outta stuff I already had. I built my own 150cc engine mount that was short enough to retain good handling and put a second swing arm and shock on for a really stable ride. Hand turned delrin motor mount bushings and a ton of other stuff. I sold and bought it back 3 times then finally sold it for good in 2017. Now I want another one. Sorry for my rambling but yer comment hit home with me. 🤘y'all have a badass day🤘🍻🤘no limits🤘
@@forrestcrabbe You are as bad as I am. I have taken the 49cc to the absolute limit & am considering boring to 58cc but really do not need to because I have the Ruck averaging 45mph cruise speed now & am getting right at 100/106mpg. This is my town errand ride & don't need what some refer to as a "Real" motorcycle. Also have an HD Ultra Classic & a Spyder RTS. Have owned a Harley for right around 50 years. The Ruck is pure fun, I even use it grocery shopping strapping down a 14 gallon HTC plastic box on top of the rear carrier.
@@JFrenchRennier that's awesome. They are indeed pure fun. I wanted to hit the ton on mine and take it to Bonneville salt flats for a land speed record on a ruckus. I never got it near that fast, but, I've lookin into it and for the right amount of money you can get one that fast these days. My biggest problem is I'm 230 pounds. Still big fun tho. I actually sold my ruckus the last time to buy a 2016 sportster 48. I wish I still had that too hehehe. Y'all have a badass day 🤘
I also love that in my state, since it is less than 50 cc, I do not have to register it with the state, no insurance required, therefore no plate necessary. I do have to have the motorcycle portion on my regular drivers license and have had that for years.
the ruckus also has the unique feature of having electric start, but doesn't have a starter motor! it sends power to the stator of the charging system and that spins the engine over.
To me It look like Ruckus was made to be for under developed/developing countries but launched it in USA were it is hyped by tinkering enthusiasts. Now demand and profit is so much that they can’t sell this in developing countries at this price and this design. Add this 5-10 gallon tank and bike packing cargo room and this would be a hit for global travelers on budget. Honda launched a scooter model in Australia with large capacity tank and cargo space for delivery business. But it look like a larger clone of metropolitan and trail.
I really like scooters, but the 50cc market is never taking off here in the States. For one we are too big for 50cc, on average. Our roads are built for larger vehicles. And vehicles are getting bigger which leaves scooter riders even more disadvantaged in traffic. Yes, they are fun, but just not practical for daily use for the majority of people.
Its true that they are not for everyone. The reason why 50cc is around is because there are many states where you can have one without getting a motorcycle endorsement on your licenses, and some states where you don't need to have a licenses at all. These are mostly used for collage towns, as a toy, at the beach or a uptown neighborhood, or something they keep on the back of their RV
@@lukelarssen7072 A used car is best in most cases for safety, space and being inside. But with a scooter the insurance is often 1/2 to 1/4 the price and it gets 2 to 4 better gas mileage than a used car, this can be helpful to a small number of people depending on their transportation needs.
I own a 2022 Rukus as well as a Tundra 4x4 Limited, HD Ultra Classic & Can Am Spyder. The Rukus is the vehicle I use for around town errands. I am also 6' 225lbs & added under seat bag, above headlights tunnel bag & a real rear carrier with a 120lb weight limit. As to speed, I max at 51mph on level ground with good acceleration. The Rukus is an adult mini-bike & I have added performance parts & tuned them to perfection. That is the reason the Rukus is so much fun, you modify it to suit you & your style of riding.
I rode the hell out of mine for several years and sold it when I moved to a less practical place for this and my landlord at the time bought it and is still running it. I did modify the intake and exhaust to give it more breathing ability for hills and jetted the carb. Never went over 30 mph but whatever. And it took a lot of off-road riding too. Not my style but dirt road blasting along. Now I wish I’d kept it. Bobbed the rear fender and a small modification to a set of sportster saddlebags fit right on it.
I've owned the British version for 15 years (Honda Zoomer). Runs on the original battery, although I usually kick start it. As for storage - there's a helmet lock and with a few bungees I've transported groceries, old car batteries, cans of engine oil, bundles of 10' canes, and occasionally a pillion - the thing's a workhorse! I've got to say though it's no good on hills, does 35mph max., and you wouldn't want to ride it too far.
Heck yeah! Thanks for sharing your story on ownership, always cool to see and especially when they've owned them for so long like you have. She's definitely a little workhorse and hard to beat if you don't need to go above 35mph!
Great vid, thanks for your effort. You mention it in the vid, "Honda has been making carburetors a while". I totally agree Kevin, not just the carburetors tho. Honda has been around a really long tome, engineering great products throughout the years. The Ruckus is a fine example. Honda has engineered an awesome little machine that is simple, no nonsense, easy to maintain and ride. I so enjoy my stock Ruckus and have no desire to "mod" it. Of course to each his own, not mad at those that do but for me, I certainly didn't buy it to go 70 mph! I love it's 40 mph top speed and totally utilitarian look and feel. Honda knows a thing or two about designing and building scooters and motorcycles,.The Ruckus does exactly what it was designed to do, and does it well!
Thanks for the support! Oh yeah, it's pretty crazy to think about just how long they've been in the game and how far their technology has came over the decades. It's cool to see models like the Ruckus that hit different corners of the market, you have people that don't want to modify them and bought it because of what it is in stock form. Then you have the flipside which are guys that buy them solely to modify and won't blink twice about dropping $10,000 bucks into one lol. That's what it takes for these legendary models that will always be remembered, similar to the Grom now. It's rare to see models like these that hit close to home with people from all walks of life.
I wanted a matte black ruckus back when I was 14 so badly! I thought about it every day. Couldn’t afford one so ended up with an ‘82 Yamaha Razz. Scooters are so much more fun than they look!
When I lived in town, I loved to ride my Ruckus for any short trips. The only place I didn't ride it was out by Walmart, those people are crazy. Fuel injection would be the best thing, a side stand and a new instrument cluster wouldn't hurt. South Carolina no longer considers a Ruckus as a moped, so you have to have a tag, insurance and a license. That means you might as well move up to a bigger bike, but not bigger fun.
lol you hit the nail on the head with the "but not bigger fun"! Oh yeah, the Ruckus is a blast on those short trips that you can just monkey around on and do some exploring etc if you're out away from the crazy people. I forgot about the side stand too, that's one thing I've been griping about for years. Once you get the hand of a centerstand, it's easy but nobody can deny the fact that a side stand is just easier when you're hopping on and off. Ahh, I didn't know that on SC. More and more states seem to be going that route with 49cc units. Thanks for not only watching but for commenting too, I appreciate it bud ;)
@@HondaProKevin South Carolina classifies the Ruckus as a motorcycle because of it's HP not the cc. Of course, no one would know unless they consult the list SC has. Law enforcement is very familiar with the Ruckus. They've seen too many teenagers flying by at 45 mph. I've heard you can put a restrictor in the carb to limit power and still register it as a moped, but that is up to the dealer. We used to have a lot of 150 cc "mopeds". Seldom see a moped now.
Luvs me a Honda,,, ruckus & metropolitan, they are solid lil vehicles ,, I keep a river of clean, fresh oil flowing thru mine, every 300 / 350 miles & I routinely take 2 hour trips thru some very rural "county" with miles of no phone service, & I trust my Hondas, they've never failed me,, I've owned everything in between from tomos to Derbi,,, I've just learned, Honda is as solid a scooter as ANY. 50 / 49 cc ✌️, great job ✌️
Thanks for sharing bud! Nothing better than getting out and disappearing in the country for a few on 2 wheels to relax. That's smart, as good, fresh oil is cheap and it's not like these things drink a lot of it so it's not expensive to swap it out often. Stay safe out there and keep enjoying these lil Hondas ;)
Really cool! Currently riding an Ultra-Classic Harley, but I didn't always ride big, started small. These are ultra cool! There is enough "naked" space on it for one to think outside the box and create your own storage mechanism. For a scooter it is fairly athletic. If one wants something more powerful or more sporty, then purchase another bike and quit whining about how this doesn't do all of that. It is what it is. The scooter is perfect for what it is and what it does. Some more colors and a kick starter I think would be legitimate additions. Other than those, Honda just needs to keep making them just like they are.
You hit the nail on the head buddy! Plus, it's cool seeing a Harley rider that can appreciate these things when a lot of people just shrug them off because it's a "scooter".
@@HondaProKevin Funny thing is that I brought up that I was looking at the Ruck as a first motorcycle to someone that rides a big full dresser, his son rides street bikes and rides stunt, he was stoked as hell to hear I wanted one even hardcore bikers love the Ruck!
The wife has a 2020 we've had for a few years. We load it and my Z125 on the back of my fifth wheel and take it when we travel. That way we can cruise around without having to drive the big diesel rig every day. LOVE IT. I'd ride one too but at 180lbs, I can't keep up with her when we go up hills.
I have recently moved to The Philippines i am actually back in the states now but I was recently looking at the mopeds there and i was Blown away at how many different types of Hondas they have.
I bought a Honda ruckus years ago and then I chopped it all up, low kit, fat tire, no I’m a little older I should have left it alone I think the ruckus looks amazing just the way it is😎👍👍👍
lol too funny man! I think we've all done that with modifying things over the years, you look back and think man - what was I thinking? I should have left it alone! It's crazy how fast you can sink ungodly amounts of money into these things though...
I am 73, mine is bone stock engine and frame, but added large rack, bags and aftermarket cool cushion off my 1800 Goldwing. Love it. Everyone that sees it says, that looks like a lot of fun to ride! They're right!
Great overview! Bought one 3yrs ago and 3,000+ miles later it's still a blast! Great way to explore a city like LA. Best part is that I can park it pretty much anywhere, even sidewalks and bike racks as it's that small. What would I like to see... I can only hit 40mph downhill, 36mph on a straight, and I'm in the bike line climbing any hill. So how about putting a 125CC in this and maybe call it the Ruckus Type-R?!
Thanks bud, appreciate it! Heck yeah, that's awesome! I bet mobbing around LA is a blast on the Ruckus and there are a lot of custom builds out that way too. Yeah, we definitely need something a little peppier in the near future for the Ruckus. They have plenty of 125-160 engines they could throw in one and even bring back the Big Ruckus nameplate too. But... as a Type R owner, I have to say I like your idea better with naming it the Ruckus Type R lol!
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it. Makes the time spent creating it, worth it, when you get positive feedback like that so thanks a million bud!
Just got my 2007 out of my local Honda motorcycle shop. Had a Vacuum leak and got a new Clutch. Runs awesome now. Oh and the cost to fix the Vacuum leak and new Clutch? Don't ask. It was alot. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 After all my Ruckus has over 27,000 miles.
Honda tried to make a bigger version of the Ruckus called the Big Ruckus back in the day, but it basically threw away everything that makes a Ruckus special and put a tube frame around the 250 scooter they were selling at the time. They half assed the build then got upset that it didn’t sell, plus it was too big of a price jump for most Ruckus riders. If they built a 150cc Big Ruckus today that kept the styling and openness of the regular Ruckus it would probably sell like hot cakes. Chinese companies sell knock off Ruckus styled scooters with GY6 150cc engines and all the customization that people do to these as standard and they sell well.
I have a 2008 bought new. I have always resented that Honda didn't deem the North American market worthy of receiving the fuel-injected model. The microscopic ports in the carb want to plug up so an owner can count on rebuilding the carb each spring. Since the fuel is not gravity-fed, there is no petcock, so no easy way to run the carb dry. I added a petcock and never turn the bike off with any fuel in the carb. I also switched to a LiFEPo4 battery which has been an excellent investment and will turn over the engine a LONG time. Finally, I always cycle the electric fuel pump 3 times before attempting to start it to ensure that the bowl has a bit of gas after being run dry. Despite the engineering blunder of using a carb I love the bike.
Never had any problems like that with my 2017 Ruckus! One run of 9 months that I never started it, just kept it on a Battery Tender, and it kicked off on the second try! Maybe where you are buying gas has sorry gas?
lol yeah it's pretty wild that we're in 2022 and it still has a carb when 99% of the other models have went efi! Appreciate the kind words and support bud, thank you...
The Ruckus sold in other countries does have EFI. For what ever reason Honda doesn't sell it in the USA with it. Honda has given up on the USA market. Watch RUclips and do a search and you will see all the new models sold throughout the world by Honda that we never get to see here.
In 2005 and 2006 Honda sold the Big Ruckus. It's a 249cc version that's a blast to ride. Sadly, Honda's marketing of the Big Ruckus was nothing, so no surprise it didn't sell very well. Pity, because it offered a lot more power and speed than its little brother.
Note: The mileage varies but you get 114 mpg if you drive it at 25mph or less. Get to max speed of about 38mph your gas mileage drops to about 90mpg. Experience and measured when new. without know it was 114 mpg I calculated to exactly 114pmg. Also the speedo is off by about 2mph. GPS says I'm doing 35mph but speedo says 37mph.
I would love some of the other market variants here in the states. Super excited about the trajectory as they’ve brought back the super cub and hunter cub over the past few years.
100% man! I'm so glad to see the small bike market popping over here. I still remember back in 2013 when I bought our first Grom to come in and everybody locally thought I was dumb and how could I enjoy it compared to my CBR etc. Fast forward to now and most of those doubters have one for themselves or one of the other smaller minimoto models from Honda and people just "get it" now. These smaller bikes bring back the fun of riding for me to where it's not about getting the next bike because it's faster than this one etc. It's all about having fun again and that's what we move away from over the years it seems like.
I was selling the Big Ruckus back in the day when they were new and they were not a sales success, hence why they were quickly discontinued. It's weird how it all worked out, everyone thought they were too expensive for what it was back then and then a couple years after Honda drops them... BAM! Everybody and their mama wanted one lol and their values started to skyrocket. Heck I sold a used one a few years back for what you could buy a new one for, it's wild! I do think they need to bring back the Big Ruckus nameplate though and throw a larger engine in one more closely styled to the OG Ruckus. If they did it right, it'd sell like hotcakes!
I’d buy one! I test drove a used one several years ago but it was totally thrashed and they were asking the moon. So I passed. Next one might be the new 125 Scrambler or a TW 200. Funny how the smaller, quirky bikes are getting more expensive and also harder to find…
Ohhh yeah, they throw that new 160 engine in there and keep the chassis the same - it'd sell like hot cakes! Thank you... Your name change threw me off for a second lol. I think that'll help out quite a bit ;)

*Honda makes them 'de-tuned' deliberately* *The reason is that the wheel-base length is far too short for anything over 40-mph because the rider's reaction-times simply aren't fast enough to cope with avoiding 'pot-holes' etc. at speeds faster than forty, and the drum-brakes cannot pull an 'emergency stop' at all at speeds faster than 35-mph or so* ( Honda does NOT want dead riders...it's bad for business) *What the Honda's WILL do is last a lifetime with proper care, because the 'Mighty Fifty' engine is bulletproof and the rest of the machine is damn near indestructible*

@@gerrynightingale9045 not for vehicles that doesn’t go faster, such as bicycles, recumbent trikes, cargo bikes and low speed gasoline engines. Drum brakes are low maintenance and last forever on such vehicles. It is still used in 21st century my friend. Mechanical and hydronic brakes better has stopping powers but they heat quickly (particularly when they are under 180 mm diameter) and need regular maintenance. Think of how large diameter disc brakes you can put on 10-12 inch wheels such as on Ruckus. Honda engineers know that. Them whole idea of Honda Ruckus to supply as bare bone as possible, with least maintenance, parts still available globally and with wide, small diameter wheels, give relatively reliable and safe stop. This is all within Einstein’s physics, my friend.
As for changes I'd like to see is brakes go from drum to hydraulic. The drum brakes really need an improvement. Can't even skid with the brakes to stop quicker. Sometimes I'm afraid the brake wire will snap before I come to a stop. The rear brakes are not easy to change either. You have to remove the muffler pipe to remove the rear wheel.
Haha then it's calling your name! You don't have to be a motorcycle or moped guy to enjoy these, trust me. Like Ethan said, you'll have a blast just getting out on a beautiful day and tooling around. You find roads and places you never knew existed because you're just out exploring. It's hard to explain but once you get out there on two wheels, you'll be hooked ;)
That'd be nice and the funny part is they weren't too far off from that number when they first debuted here in the USA. If my memory is correct, their MSRP was $1,899 back in 2003. Heck, it can be difficult finding a used one that isn't a basket case sometimes for that money these days lol.
I had many scooters from the year Spree released. Had the black spree, White Elite 80, then 250 elite. I wound up modifying the spree for off-road. I then got into the Honda rebel 250 and have not had much since. I miss it.
@@HondaProKevin oh man yeah!! I imagine eventually they will make e scooters. Imagine an E Spree. The SpreE v I bet they would sell. I'd have to be honest though. I really like the gas engines.

No financing , no extras , just taxes, fees, set up charges, and possibly a cut for all 9 salesmen that tried to horn in on the deal. Well, I can't say "we" anymore as I don't work for a dealership anymore but I did for the last 15 years, up until the doors closed a few months ago. Every day I dealt with people that had run-ins with bad apples like you did and thankfully I was able to show them we're not all bad. We don't all play those gimmicks and games, some of us truly love what we do and helping out fellow enthusiasts that share the same passion as we do. lol the part where all 9 salesmen are getting a cut cracked me up and that's about right if they're charging you that much in fees and just overall BS! Hate to hear you had to deal with one of the bad apples out there but trust me, all dealers aren't bad and I'm glad to hear you picked one up too. These things are a blast to monkey around on! definitely one of the more informative vids I've seen so far on YT -- some of them are just "fluff" but you get into details about the machine almost right from the beginning. Would have liked to have seen a bit more on the performance, not drag strip stuff but practical -- how fast, how long to get to x-mph, etc. Things that might be useful in a real life situation.
@@paulmccarter908 dont get me wrong choice is good but the batteries on e scooters this size cant even hit 100 miles on a single charge without strapping a battery the size of my torso to said bike. Thanks for posting up your experience! Always love the feedback. How many miles were you able to squeeze out of her before those 2 rebuilds? Thanks for the support bud, really appreciate it...
Most states have a 35 mph or less speed limit for a moped. I weigh 200 and I have hit 45 mph downhill (the extra weight actually helps momentum). If you weigh 115, you can hit 45 on the straight and level. Two cases in Columbia, SC. Tickets for speeding, no license, no insurance, no tag, etc, about $750. Parents tried to sue Honda dealer, never heard what happened, but that dealer won't sell a Ruckus as a moped any more. SC now list the Ruckus as a motorcycle because of its HP, not its CC. It's a beast.

If your ruckus has been sitting for a while and your battery is completely flat it’s not gonna be very easy to kickstart it it has an electronic choke you need to put just enough power through that battery to operate the electric choke you could do that maybe by hooking up a small trickle charger for five or 10 minutes you’ve got to have that electronic choke especially if it’s been sitting for a while it’s a real bear to start
At the moment, they are nothing more than rumors. Honda has some new scooters in the works but an official Ruckus 150, I can't say I have anything that makes me feel we'll see it within the next couple of years. Would I like to see it though? Of course lol so fingers crossed ;)
Does the gas light accurately notify you when your low on gas? I keep hearing people run out of gas on the road with these things. When the light comes on how many miles does it have before it completely shuts down?
The gas light on my stock Ruckus comes on when I have 0.15 gallons of gas left in the tank. The tank is 1.15 gallons and I get 90 mpg so I can go another 9 miles before I run out. And I have never run out. Whenever I fill up, I check my odometer, note the mileage and add 80 to it....that is what I look for when I am ready to fill up again. Whoever is running out of gas is either stupid or ignorant. I have saddle bags on my Ruck, and in one I carry a filled 1 gallon gas can! I have run out with my bigger bikes but not this one!
Honda toyed around with a hybrid PCX scooter a couple years ago overseas but not here in the states. We're usually the last place they try out new products like that lol as they even have electric models over there that we're not close to seeing yet. It'll be interesting to see how the next couple years play out though as they are wanting to bring more to market in those segments so we'll see.
I might just pick up one of these. I blew out the tire on my 500 watt kick scooter and blew out 2 tires on my 49cc kick scooter. I had to push my 49cc kick scooter 3 miles back home. And I stopped by les schwab along the way to see if they are able to fill it with that solid wheel foam but they told me it will be cheaper to just order a solid tire. Alrighty then. I'll just keep on walking my scooter right home. They didn't give me a price but I wouldn't care if it had cost me $150 to solid my $45 tire but they recommended I order a tire.
I tried the foam in the tire thing, it didn't work out well at all. It's really important to have pneumatic tires on a 49cc and a lower watt electric, solid (and foam) tires are heavy and don't roll easy so they suck up a lot of power when there isn't much to spare. I think you'd be very disappointed like I was.
I would love to see Honda K.I.S.S.(keep it simple stupid). Just keep the bare minimum...carbs and street legal. If they can achieve what Harley used to be, “what ya see is what ya get”, then they’ll have a leg up and build an already growing following in the mini bike arena. Mayyyyybe add a kick start. I’ve seen so many people mod these for relatively cheap...and a pair of these is how I’m going to get my wife into motorcycles.
lol yeah buddy, snuck that kick starter mention a little later in the video for ya ;) Best of luck on getting your wife into motorcycles. I've had a lot of guys over the years try the exact same thing, snatching up a pair of smaller toys like this and it works. You have to get them to see the fun side of things and not be scared, then they're hooked!
I’m not knocking the ruckus for what you pay versus what you get it’s worth it if you live in a warm climate in a city or someplace where you just don’t have to drive far every day then by all means the ruckus is probably for you it’s cheap on gas and insurance and will run a good long time
The Ruckus (and any other 50cc scooter) would be great for riding on 25 mph residential streets. But I would never get out on a an actual road with one. You would get squashed like a bug.
@@heaththompson919 No way. I had a 2007 Metropolitan with the same engine. It wouldn't hit 40 mph, and the Met was faster than the Ruckus for some reason.
Here's my most recent video on the topic ruclips.net/video/5BeD7P9zloo/видео.html and I'm digging through patents weekly to keep an eye on what's coming down the pipeline ;)
I love gas scooters and the Ruckus is one of the best. I'm going to enjoy them while I can. I know the powers that be are trying to do away with fossil fuels and I'm about as excited over electric vehicles as I am about catching an STD
@@stephenloflin4772 Fair, but they only beat gas scoots on acceleration and not top speed. The range is also given for a specific speed (usually 20mph) which means drive it faster and the already short range of a fully charged battery is even less. Lack of maintenance also translates into parts of the scooter that cannot be serviced by the home mechanic. I prefer to be able to do ALL repairs on my bikes and keep them going no matter what. I see electric scooters (among other EVs) as the introduction of the disposable vehicle.
@@whitechrist2965 There is nothing stopping an electric scooter being made that is as fast or faster than a gas scooter. And range is an issue NOW, however battery tech is getting better every day. The technology is in its infancy. I understand how you feel, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. It's the future no matter how we feel about it.
@@stephenloflin4772 Yes, my point was it is the future-at least that appears to be the way it is working out-and I don't like it. I'll never embrace EVs no matter how well they perform because I despise the concept of batteries. EVs don't make power, the only consume it, and it has to come from somewhere else and be stored in the battery. If you are young enough perhaps you'll live long enough to see acceptable battery technology, but that is not likely in my lifetime. I'm going to get stuck in the problematic transition period where I will be disappointed in it all, plus having to deal with the fact that one of the few passions I have in my life (internal combustion engines) will no longer be a viable option. Picture something that means everything to you and then imagine you are forced to give it up and that's the way I feel about it.
I'm assuming these things are aimed at drunk drivers since some states in U.S don't require license for anything below 50cc, Upgrading it will kill it's target market.
@@miketran4289 I drove one of these while in college and living downtown city. One thing people forget is that these do not require insurance or a motorcycle endorsement. So literally anyone can buy one and drive it without a problem. The bigger engine would make it a motorcycle and kill part of the appeal. Thats where the trail 125 would be better.
@@Mike-dd8bd It depends on the state. Some of the larger states require both of those things. In states like that people normally go for the bigger engine
I want to ask, If it is a 49cc will it require licensing, plates and driver's license??? As far as know here in Fl. a 49cc requires no license or plates. Very nice video.
Sorry, in Florida there is no difference between 49cc and 499cc, both are considered motorcycles and require plates, insurance and a motorcycle license.
Thanks for the kind words Bob! It looks like Jim got you on FL's laws. It's wild how different one state is from the next and even between cities and counties at times.
Just get your license it's that much easier I used to think the same thing I will not lie to you I used to say oh I don't need the license I can get away with it no no no you eventually need it we should be paranoid every time you're writing if a cop pulls you over
But people love the ruckus for what it is.. aside from minor upgrades, I feel like any substantial redesign would be akin to killing the golden goose in hopes that a better one comes out of one of the eggs..
The Ruckus is way overpriced! DRUM brakes, no fuel injection, 10" wheels in 2021??? For only $700 more you can have a Zuma that is 125cc, 12" wheels, full hydraulic disc brakes and fuel injection.
The big differences between the Zuma and the Ruckus is the Zoomer requires a motorcycle license no matter where you are in the world pretty much except for India and China where is the Ruckus does not require a motorcycle license that is why Honda makes the Ruckus as a 50cc and not a 125CC there was talk of a super Ruckus that just use the same engine and transmission as the Grom or maybe the automatic transmission instead of manual transmission but same engine as the ground for the super Ruckus but they're not going to do it because that looks for a whole different demographic and crowd of people looking to get into motorcycling as well plus to make the Ruckus chassis stable enough they would have to bump up the tires to 12in to bring the stability back for handling the speeds of a 125cc engine
I say get you your gangster ass Ruckus and go mob around town having a blast and forget about how fast you're going because that's when ya have fun lol ;) There's a reason they are so popular and even among bigger guys. It all just depends on what you want it to do at the end of the day. However, if you're over 220lbs - I don't think you'll be seeing anything above 35mph unless you're going downhill etc. I'm a bit lighter so I can't comment on exactly what speeds you might be able to pull off but hopefully an owner can chime in that's around your size and help out bud.
Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! 100%! That's where the Ruckus really shines and those are the number one reasons people gave me over the years when buying one haha. It's so simple, extremely reliable and hard to damage so it's a win win package for a lot of people!
100%! It baffles me as to why we don't get more of Honda's model options here in the states that have larger engines. They've been playing around a little bit with the new ADV150 and PCX160 and that's a step in the right direction but we need more options. It's difficult for a lot of people to justify something like this when you're pegged out at 35-40 mph and with most roads in the states, you'll get ran over going that speed. But for those that live downtown and work downtown and for a few other instances, these things are a blast! Personally, I just couldn't justify one in my life as anything other than just a toy to play around with and use as a pitbike etc.
@@HondaProKevin exactly. 40 mph max speed is enough to get run over by soccer mom in her Chevy Tahoe. It's really not very safe. I just don't know who buys these 50 cc scoots when you can only use them in the neighborhood or maybe to carry on your RV or some other limited use. I'd take a SH350 or Forza 350 now. I can understand why they won't bring the Forza 750 here because not many in the US will spend $12k on a scooter but the mid-range scooters, it makes zero sense. Thanks for all your videos. When do the other 2022 announcements get released?
50cc is still fine for getting around a city but it's all about defensive driving. Also 49cc things are partly so popular because most states won't require a motorcycle license for em. Not only that, but in my state, Colorado, "low power scooters" only cost $6 to register and it's good for three years! Insurance is super cheap too. In contrast, the 250 I ride around has cost me ~$200 in registration fees alone over the two years I've had it.
In certain states you can drive a 50cc bike with nothing more then a normal drivers license. No registration or insurance needed. With a fairly small investment it can get up to 45-50 mph and works well for most non highway roads. Buy a used one and it maintains its value too.
@@txman951 I was gonna go with a 50CC scooter but I ended up getting a Honda forza 300 CC and I've taken it all over California at 65 miles an hour on the freeway no problem

Bought one of these exact models brand new a few weeks ago. It's a blast. I live in an area with a lot of 25 mph - 35 mph roads, and it does very well. I feel like I'm driving something from a Mario Kart game when I ride. It scales the two-wheel experience down.

@@hoodieboy1515 yeah I would bring it inside the workplace if possible or get a couple of big locks for it.
It's mean you are enjoying life 😉
I bought my Ruck new in 2017.
I have a 2012 Honda ruckus love it my wife drives it everywhere
Hey guys does it need a license for it to drive?
@@Edrick1321 Yes in Pennsylvania it does.
"Bike" is a bit of a stretch 😂

Got one back in 2010 just to go around since i live in small province area . It was a blast to ride in the far country and even the neighbors love it
the ruckus also has the unique feature of having electric start, but doesn't have a starter motor! it sends power to the stator of the charging system and that spins the engine over.
Honda used the stator starting system back in the 70’s on the TN360 mini truck also🤓
I have a Harley sport glide, Honda CRF 250 L and would love to get a Ruckus just for cruising around town !!! Lol
I really like scooters, but the 50cc market is never taking off here in the States. For one we are too big for 50cc, on average. Our roads are built for larger vehicles. And vehicles are getting bigger which leaves scooter riders even more disadvantaged in traffic. Yes, they are fun, but just not practical for daily use for the majority of people.
it's not that cheap compare to a used car
@@JFrenchRennier
Can you tell us what you did to get some more performance out of the motor and if you live in the mountains or at Sea level thank you
I rode the hell out of mine for several years and sold it when I moved to a less practical place for this and my landlord at the time bought it and is still running it.
I've got almost 8,500 miles on my modified 2020 ruckus and i absolutely love this thing
@@HondaProKevin My 70s era Trail 70 still runs great. :)

You don't have to drive to Walmart to run into crazy people
Luvs me a Honda,,, ruckus & metropolitan, they are solid lil vehicles ,, I keep a river of clean, fresh oil flowing thru mine, every 300 / 350 miles & I routinely take 2 hour trips thru some very rural "county" with miles of no phone service, & I trust my Hondas, they've never failed me,, I've owned everything in between from tomos to Derbi,,, I've just learned, Honda is as solid a scooter as ANY.
Stay safe out there and keep enjoying these lil Hondas ;)
man, you are wasting a LOT of oil!

They don't make them anymore but if you buy one used they literally made something called "Honda Big Ruckus" which is what you describe.
They don't make the engine bigger because any bigger or faster than 30mph would require a motorcycle license in most states I believe qt least in nc

Man, I am glad to hear it still is running good at that high mileage! Got 6100 miles on mine right now! But yours is 10 years older than mine! HA HA
As for gauges, it also has a engine over heat light located on the speedometer.
That's correct ;)
@@HondaProKevin That's GOOD
Hmmm, thanks for that info. Guess I never had mine overheat! HA HA
If the model works and is reliable then it doesn’t need change
I like how the seat unlocks to a open box
All these years. Yet still no fuel injection. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. 🤣. Great videos. Keep up the great work.
lol yeah it's pretty wild that we're in 2022 and it still has a carb when 99% of the other models have went efi!

If it has fuel injection and a big motor then it wouldn’t be a ruckus 🤷🏽♂️
The Ruckus sold in other countries does have EFI. For what ever reason Honda doesn't sell it in the USA with it. Honda has given up on the USA market. Watch RUclips and do a search and you will see all the new models sold throughout the world by Honda that we never get to see here.

The only improvement I can see is to improve the front suspension. It is a bit jarring on bumpy roads.
Definitely, it could stand to be improved a bit for sure!

Let’s start a ruckus! Thank you for making this video!
The Ruckus needs to be 250cc again. Then they’ll have a sales success!
Why? It was a flop when it came out, that is why they discontinued it after 2 years!
A 160 ruckus would be the ticket!! Great video as always buddy!
Ohhh yeah, they throw that new 160 engine in there and keep the chassis the same - it'd sell like hot cakes!
Thank you... Your name change threw me off for a second lol. I think that'll help out quite a bit ;)
@@HondaProKevin yeah, used to be pretty much automotive driven, but hate to start an entirely new channel. Almost 1k subs and most of them love bikes I'm sure!
The most reliable thing with a useless speed limit you can buy
The Ruckus is designed for urban environments where the speed limit is usually 30 - 40 mph, usually cities or suburbs.
*Honda makes them 'de-tuned' deliberately*
*The reason is that the wheel-base length is far too short for anything over 40-mph because the rider's reaction-times simply aren't fast enough to cope with avoiding 'pot-holes' etc. at speeds faster than forty, and the drum-brakes cannot pull an 'emergency stop' at all at speeds faster than 35-mph or so*
( Honda does NOT want dead riders...it's bad for business)
*What the Honda's WILL do is last a lifetime with proper care, because the 'Mighty Fifty' engine is bulletproof and the rest of the machine is damn near indestructible*
@@gerrynightingale9045 Drum brake has nothing wrong. Drum brakes were used in heavy duty motorcycles till 80s. In new era corporations controlled by Wall Street vultures it is against their profits. Even bicycle industry followed this nonsense, however they are still used by some cargo bicycle and recumbent manufacturers.

*Drum brakes fade quickly under hard use...that's why they were 'phased-out'*
@@gerrynightingale9045 not for vehicles that doesn’t go faster, such as bicycles, recumbent trikes, cargo bikes and low speed gasoline engines.
I just bought a 24 ruckus...tan, green, brown. I WISH I had the grey option though. I love that.
I would like to try an electric version of this bike size.
Same here!!!
Definitely can't argue with those points bud!

So I bought a great used one from a private party for way less than half. Never go to a dealer for anything
HOLY CRAP! That's what I hate about dealers like that, they give us all a bad wrap and then you have people saying to never go to a dealer for anything.
Trust me, we're not all bad.

Honda took this Ruckus design and turned it into a 110cc "ZOOMER" for the Thai market.
They won't do that in the US, that would require a motorcycle license and if I am getting a motorcycle license I might as well get a kawasaki h2.

The Thai ZOOMER has a proper locking compartment under the seat, it is huge. Single beam headlight. Do a Goog Search.

Would be really cool if they made a moped that could compete with the electric bike market, maybe a hybrid?

I find the performance of some of these electric motors to be intriguing. That and the lack of maintenance.

They've been playing around a little bit with the new ADV150 and PCX160 and that's a step in the right direction but we need more options. It's difficult for a lot of people to justify something like this when you're pegged out at 35-40 mph and with most roads in the states, you'll get ran over going that speed.
Pretty much this bike is cooler than the Zoomer-X here in SE Asia.
