    I don't know about you, but I'm seeing the 'crop deaths' argument come up way too often recently, potentially fuelled by Joe Rogan frequently bringing up 'facts' about how vegans are killing more animals than non-vegans. So I think it's time to delve into this 'ultimate argument' against veganism and answer the hard question, are we responsible for killing more animals during crop production? If you are proposing that the citizens of industrialized nations reduce their beef consumption to the once per month that everyone eating pasture raised cattle would require, then yes, I am all for that solution. It's flat out exhausting to see so many of my fellow human beings so willingly and blatantly ignore the truth out of greed and self-affirmation. It's like nobody gives a shit, like nobody will make the slightest self-sacrifice for a better future, like people only care about being right, about wining the argument and feeling good all of the time; having the "freedom" to do whatever you want no matter the victim (horribly, ironically, eventually, themselves). It seems like there is a blanket of consumerist arrogance that has enveloped us all - "don't tell me what to do" , is the only principle anyone cares about. It's an up-mountain battle with a ton of bricks on your back, but you are unrelenting. The hope that you and this community gives me is hard to describe. I honestly think that vegan activists should do more research.
      The whole thing about it being more eco friendly is false. 2 percent of a cows diet is edible by humans. Most of the water being used is grey water (rain water) and the land being used is useless to crop farmers because of the rocky terrain and the slopes that are to steal to grow anything.
      You say that plants don’t feel pain which is technically true since they lack a functioning brain but the do in fact let out screeching noises when in distress, they let out a chemical as a distress call. Not to mention that they do develop bonds with other plants. They can communicate with plants that are close to them and even show a bond when the other plants are moved far away.
      There has also been no scientific proof that a vegan diet is healthier then a normal one. It has been seen that vegans are more likely to have a stroke but less likely to have certain heart diseases.
      I personally respect your lifestyle choices but I don’t see why you guys act like you are better then us.

      Ed strawmanned the argument at 0:45 because the clip was specifically about hunting. A wild boar, deer, etc. do not eat farmed grains so a hunter is not responsible for any crop deaths. So it is very possible that a hunter is responsible for fewer deaths than a vegan. Of course a lot of hunters (e.g. Rogan) use this as an excuse to justify gluttonous consumption from animal agriculture but that only reflects their poor character and lack of self discipline.

    • @TheOnlyTalia
      @TheOnlyTalia 3 года назад +37

      no, nugent and rogan are pitching the argument as hunting vs veganism, as if factory farming isn't responsible for the overwhelming majority of animal deaths. hunting is not sustainable at all if omnivores converted to that rather than factory farming. rogan's podcast is full of bad faith arguments.

      @@TheOnlyTalia Right, but they are not telling other people to adopt a hunting lifestyle -- as you point out it is not viable for the current meat consumption to be provided by hunting. Also, most people (e.g. myself) have no interest in hunting. I think Rogan, Nugent, etc. are more annoyed by the "preachiness" of vegans claiming they have some moral high ground. However, this is not true since, theoretically there could be a hunter who survives on precisely three deer per year thus is responsible for fewer deaths than an average vegan.

    Actually, being a fruitarian is the best way to limit death. The fruits of a plant are the only thing nature gives up willingly (without resistance (when ripe)) for consumption. Many seeds spread and propagate through the consumption and digestive breakdown of them. Every species on earth, both plant and animal, gives resistance to death. Only the fruits of a plant willingly give themselves up for consumption. That being said, I do agree a plant-based diet reduces the overall plant and animal deaths as opposed to any other diet aside from fruitarian. To improve the stats even more it is important to look at how we grow our food and put serious effort into much more sustainable practices. This can be said towards the farming of animals and their feed as well.
    No, I'm not a fruitarian, but I do view it as the ideal diet.

Fast food chains partnering with Vegan meat companies is just the start of a huge movement that is happening. Without being offensive, if you do the research you are a giving moron if you think meat, eggs and dairy are a good idea to eat 😂
      Try eating those things in there raw form and see how you get on. ✌🏻🌱

      @@anyadarlinggNo, I really don't agree with that. I would love to fight against animal cruelty and bad animal production practices, but vegans always chase me away with there moral grandstanding and attempts at guilt trips.
      I don't feel guilty about eating meat and I never will because I see the world as an ecosystem we are part of not above. The ecosystem is one place where diversity is actually our strength. Vegans in my opinion muddy the issue and cause people that are not vegan not to bother fighting against these issues because they simply can't be arsed being called murderers all the time by zealot's.

    • @anyadarlingg
      @anyadarlingg 6 месяцев назад

      @tannakaobi1 I understand that. Everyone in my life is non-vegan, and thinks eating meat is an ecosystem thing. I personally feel like if we had farms where animals died due to natural causes, that would be a bit different. One of my friends grew up on a farm like that.
      But i think businesses are too money hungry and throw ethics out the window.
      It would be refreshing to have a politician actually prioritize ethics, and the environment of the world we live in, over other things. I would at least like to see what impact it would make.

These animals are siting crammed, suffering from heat strokes, dehydrated, hungry. I once crammed with 5 friends in the back of a car for a 20 min ride and i was so sick and almost having panic attacks. • @luckyyuri

      @Novus Ordo A few years ago i’ve read a short sci-fi story on a blog and although i didn’t like the subject i nevertheless keep thinking about it lately. In it our world was a simulation made by future human civilization, somewhere in the year 3000 or 5000 i can’t remember. They had immense technological power, every individual was a small god able to do and experience a fantastic number of things, but this was also their biggest problem. You can’t just allow anyone access to immense technological power because they could become a threat to society. So their solution was creating a huge simulation in which people were borne and lived believing they live in the real world, doing whatever is in their nature, showing their "true face" as it were. Those who proved themselves within the simulation that they were caring, responsible, altruistic persons, eventually died within the simulation and they were pulled out in the real world in the body of their perfectly healthy teenage self. Those who didn’t respect life, didn’t cooperate with other people, who didn’t engage in social matters, were left to die in the simulation without granting them the knowledge of the real world and the option to take part. The sim world was chosen to recreate the 21Century because this was exactly the historical period where there was a lot of knowledge and access to information, so people could learn from history, experience past ideas and ways of life in the same time with future ideas and ways of life, develop a rich personality (which was valuable for the outside world), but in the same time wasn’t yet offering too much knowledge of simulation technology and other things. This is how that future society got all its members, this is how they were "schooled" and this is how they were selected without any risk of letting any savage, irresponsible or irreverent individuals in the real world. Once out they got to live till about 300 years in good health.
      I personally hate the idea of simulation, this notion is an abomination, but this story haunts me and i definitely like their motivation for creating a simulated world. If this were true, there’s at least one good thing: people like you won’t ever get out.

      It’s a nice story, but it quickly made me uncomfortable as I thought about it.
      My main problem with it is, what about the people who are born into a life in which they have virtually no agency? The children who die of hunger or abuse. The people who are trafficked into slavery and never get out, never getting a chance to exercise their own free will, let alone their morality. And those born with severe developmental problems, or debilitating mental disorders. Where would they fit in such a simulation?
      They don’t get the chance to develop, find or prove their character, so if they’re not the ones being tested, would they have to be some sort of AI? That’s what makes me really uncomfortable with this idea. All in all this whole thing is paradise reimagined for technocrats. A fun idea to explore sure, but it has many of the same problems of the original paradise, and some new ones too.

    • @luckyyuri
      @luckyyuri 3 года назад +1

      @@raniaa2592 Rania, it’s always nice to encounter thoughtful and caring people like you. I think your insight is spot on on every account.
      This particular description of a simulated world is indeed paradise reimagined by a technological generation. Sharing the story cannot bring much harm though. Just like the concept of paradise, it tethers the psyche to some wonderful thing to come if you work to overcome your bad nature, and work for the common good of all beings. The only problem i see with sharing the religious paradise/hell story is that people’s unconscious might get the idea that "good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell *anyway,* so why do any work to change this fleeting earthly life for the better"-this attitude contributes to maintaining hell right here on earth. As for the concept of paradise in itself, yes, it has a number of big problems.
      Yet, the simulation scenario depicts a world that’s different then the one that’s under heaven. As you’ve said, not all creatures within it must be conscious. And as much as i hate to say it, i’d be incredibly relieved if i’d find out that all those people with severe developmental problems or mental disorders, and all the farmed animals, were something akin unconscious NPC’s. But i don’t believe it-we don’t have any evidence to believe in such a simulation, we don’t have any way to know if all people within such a simulation would be conscious or not, *and it would be a grave mistake to think less of others based on a story.*
      The world i’d like to live in is one similar to that depicted by a british philosopher when he was asked how the year 3000 will look like (*). That’s the paradise i dream of. I agree with everything he’s saying there, although i think that he ignores one important thing, an immensely valuable aspect for any society-maintaining a rich eclectic mix of individual personalities. In a perfect peaceful society you can’t nurture sensible, mature, complex and subtle minds. Most poets, musicians and great people of all kinds emerged out of a dynamic tension between heaven and hell. And as far as i can imagine there’s no way for a future society to directly design a human being. They’d have to safely recreate the optimal conditions for human development to happen naturally, and in my opinion there aren’t any better conditions than the early 21Century.
      This changes nothing, even if we live in a simulation and this happens to be its purpose, you cannot take this knowledge to change how you live your life. Also, the simulation scenario doesn’t change anything for the trillion Darwinian beings that lived in the real actual history of this planet. The only people who would benefit if it’s true, is us.

    An Aussie here. 12 years ago I moved out to country Victoria. An area of poor pastureland (i.e. depleted soils and just whatever grasses that had self-sown) that had been substantially used for grazing (as well as gold fossicking during the gold rush era). So no specific crops or plant industry in the area at all. The move meant that our various sticks of furniture and knick knacks went into a storage facility on the outskirts of the town for about a year. The storage was weatherproof, but had roller door access. During that time in storage, there had been both a locust plague and a mouse plague. When I was getting the items out of storage at the end of that time, the smell from the mouse urine was very strong and there were considerable numbers of bodies of both locusts and mice. The locusts had found their way in but couldn't figure out how to get out again, and just starved to death. The mice had made themselves a nice warm home, but there was no nearby source of food or water for them either. They also would have died from starvation.
    Others in the area complained of losses from both plagues, but they had animal feed stored at their properties which the plague critters were eating into.
    Left to it's own, nature seems to be quite good at self-regulating. It's only when mankind plays with the environment that all the balances are lost. I seriously believe everybody should be more involved in a small is beautiful mindset with their food needs. Growing more of what they eat in their backyards and relying far less on the need for any huge mono-culture enterprise! Learn more about permaculture and companion planting. Lean about making environments conducive to predator bugs like mantises rather than using chemicals.

      why? the only people who are "fans" of earthling ed are other vegans. I have yet to see any vegan actually address this guys intellectual pitfalls and circular logic. In addition, he uses clickbait titles to drive media to his channel, which on the face devalues his entire argument, which supposedly comes from a morality sensibility. I don't think he has a morality argument, he has an ideology and is willing to achieve his ideas by any mean, by lying, which he does regularly, the clickbait titles alone are blatant lies. Why would anyone of any importance have him on, he is clearly a charlatan. I have never seen this dude on any other podcast either, only hardcore vegan zealots.

One thing that resonated with me is that he said X amount of land is used for vegetable crops and a larger amount is used for animal crops. But per capita, what is the actual answer? Considering that a huge majority of people eat meat as a primary food source. What would the decimation be if the majority of people ate vegetables? This is an interesting question. Can anybody help? @@Boomer289-ol2vvso your argument against veganism is that “ humans are smarter than animals “ by the same logic, I’m guessing you don’t mind eating or killing dogs and cats either obviously. Also , why should we stop the food chain and segregate only according to animals ? I’m sure the average rich person is stronger and smarter than poor uneducated kids , right ? Why don’t we exploit them under the pretence of the societal food chain ? In this argument I’m trying to say that we humans don’t follow the laws of nature. Murder and rape is common in animal society but we humans frown upon the same. Why ? Because we are capable of sentience and the concept of morality. Just because something is part of our prehistoric nature doesn’t make it right by our current society’s standards. Also.. lmao we have long since left the food chain, we literally aren’t even a part of it at this point.

    You don’t even have to eat wheat and soy to be vegan and most non-vegans eat plenty of wheat and they also eat soy indirectly through livestock. The worst part is that it’s so darn disingenuous. They aren’t appalled at rodent deaths at all. They aren’t marching the streets and demanding we find alternate harvesting options. They just eat more animals directly in response which really shows their true colors. You can be vegan without killing animals directly or indirectly but you can’t avoid killing animals by eating animals. I guess ignorance really is bliss. Ugh!

      Ah, the “perfect solution” logical fallacy. It’s a fallacy because there are no perfect solutions to any problem. Just because one can’t be a “perfect” vegan in an imperfect world is no excuse to not try to be the best vegan one can be. And that’s exactly how it’s stated by the Vegan Society:
      “Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

The phone I use, the Fairphone 3, is labelled as vegan, so it's certainly possible to do it without animal prodcuts. They also recycle a lot of materials, which leads to less mining and therefore less animal deaths, I assume?
      Either way, it's a stupid argument, the more I think about it.
      EDIT: After more research, the Fairphone is not "labelled as vegan", I just got that from a website that claimed it is. However, they still have plenty materials without a clear chain of production and won't call themselves vegan because of that.

    When you don't understand the numbers. The most ready source of processed soybeans for animal feed is the soybean meal that results from beans being processed to extract the oil. Soybean leaves and stems can also be grazed, ensiled or dried to make hay. Even if you were to grow the seeds for oil (vs forage soybeans) you still can use left over parts of the plant to feed livestock.

    • @chimp09
      @chimp09 Год назад

      So what?
      In the end we could feed way more humans by directly eating the soybeans. Nobody cares about the soy oil, except the industry to make even more money out of the process.
      The stems and leaves provide far fewer nutrients for the cows. It's the protein in the meal that makes them grow fast.
