Do we need to see you use the bandsaw and file? No. Do we like seeing it. Well I do. The video feels more complete to me. And I appreciate the extra work that it is on you
What a fun watch! Beautiful simple design. I loved the music. Your videos are really becoming another form of your art. Thanks again John. Now I'm wondering just how much beating it is going to take to get a waist into my attempt at one of these.
Went through the Denver airport three days ago, on our way home to Washington state (from New Orleans). Delays due to the weather forced my wife and I to find accommodations for the night. Standing in 25 degree breeze in a thin short sleeve shirt waiting for a hotel shuttle was no fun! Wished I had been at your shop near the forge..! Very nice candle holder btw. :)
Very nice work. I have to get busy making a bunch of candle holders. I think we are going to be in for an icey conditions this year. Has been mild for a couple of mild years.
Ohio , Have to pick my last tomatoes, Frost coming this weekend., Ribbon burner mortor work done except the last coat refection . I will be ready in November some time, Lots of improvement in my little shop.Today I have lighting and outlet. Hay like this candle stick
Lenblacksmith. Lol now we know your going to be candlestick making too. Talented feller your becoming! Lolololol Sorry couldnt help myself. 🙏blessed days sirSir Crawford out🧙♂️
@@danielcrawford7315 Ha thanks Daniel, I would love to make one but I don't have torches and find it hard to heat the tenon up, but I suppose now I have a nice little coke forge might be able to do it in that.
@@lenblacksmith8559 , congratulations on that. Its gonna be a good thing for you. I got a 1913 cast iron rivet forge last month at quadsquad gathering after Daniel Moss hammer classes. Its pretty sweet, just gota weld a crack at tuear(-5spelling) to weld on and it's good to go. Got really nice anvil too. 250lb vulcan w nice rebound. So I'm set to start now, after I weld the cracks
@@lenblacksmith8559 , yes sirSir avg 8 to 10$ a lb for a good condition old anvil w a name. New ones are high too. I got super luck. 1st cuz I had Daniel Moss there to look at it and advise me ( really meant alot respect for him. ) 2nd cuz it was a freaking awesome price. 350$ for 250lbs in really good shape w great rebound. Was a blessed day no doubt
You could also make the top tenon excessively long, and coil it up (like a courting candle holder (although I don't know whether courting candles actually existed back in the day, I have heard somewhere that they are a more modern creation)). But I like the candle holder as is. I don't think I have seen candles like that, but then again, candles for lighting are somewhat antiquated (at least some places).
That's awesome! Great piece! And great video. I captured an awesome still shot from the video, I'll send it to you when I'm done figiting with it for you :)
Hay John, loved the video. I was watching as you turned the tongs in your hand with ease. Is there a proper way to hold the tongs, or is it just the way that your tongs are made? Also, should I hold my tongs at the back of the rains so I don't have to grip so tightly?
If the tongs fit well, you should be able to hold them with a relaxed grip. Holding at the end does provide a tighter grip. But I feel like my hand is in a more natural position when I move up a little.
During the first 2/3rds or so I was thinking I was perhaps not too keen on the design, feeling there was too many flat surfaces that could do wih some embellishments(like some chiseled pattern on the base plate, or maybe a twisted mid section or the like) but as it began to come together I started to really like it, very clean.
That turned out great! I have a question though. Did you taper the hole in the base so the tenon would expand tighter? I thought I saw a bit of a taper.
Very nice! Question, though; I have some 1" bar similar to what you have there, and I twisted it in order to try to make a candlestick, but it came out with a bit of a bend. What's your method for straightening out such pieces? Thank you for these videos, they are wonderfully instructive!
You can gently squeeze the twist in the vice while holding corner to corner or use a wooden or rawhide mallet over a wood block. The goal is to not beat up the corners of the twist.
Beat me to the leaves for the candle cup, great minds? Great project, but you need more than one, what if you are already up and moving about and the wife needs light to get up too? At least one for every member of the household + family + visitors, and a couple for each community area in the house. A two to three finger loop, off one corner would make it a little easier to carry if the center pillar isn't tall enough for some hands to grip it. And remember, don't leave home or go to bed with candles burning. (Video specific safety outro).
Funny how that works the blacksmith who has probably made several dozen or more candle holders doesn't have one .. Lol Kind of like the cobbler's children don't have shoes and so on .. :}
I do, but not permanently wired with auto start. Power needs to be out quit a while in the house to be worth worrying about and I can usually find things to do in the shop that don't require power.
That thing is awesome. You weren't kidding when you said "heavy" haha. Love it. It'll outlast your grandkids, grandkids, grandkid
Oh please!! Since I don’t have a power hammer, I don’t think you can ever show too much power hammer! ❤️
Thats interesting. Many people with out a power hammer try to avoid anything having to do with them. Must be to tempting 😉
I'm a late starter, and really glad there's folks like you to offer how to' s, Thanks for what you're doing! You're a blessing.

I figure showing a bit of it helps the video. But 5 minutes of each gets to be a bit much. Glad you enjoyed it.
I love the simplicity of the design. And it is gorgeous!

Like the simplicity and the functionality. Once again thanks for the opportunity to view your work

These are called plumbers candles. I’m not sure what plumbers would have used them for though.
Holy cow, I just made a similar piece out of wrought iron. took about 3 tries to keep from splitting.
Beautiful candle holder. Well made👍
Thanks

I might try to make one of those. Maybe a little different though.
We each add our own style and thats what keeps the imagination working.
Yea I don't have a forge but I do have a cutting torch and some taps. Maybe that would work.

Muito BOM seus projetos obrigado por compartilhar conhecimento pois muitos não o fazem parabens pelo trabalho!!!!
Thank you
Lovely. Is there anything other than practicing to be done to get those perfectly mitred corners on the base plate to your candlestick?
Its mostly a matter of sneaking up on it while watching what happens with each blow.
Would a hold down keep it from bouncing as much
Perhaps, but it would have to be just the right length to hold it right where you need it over the hardy hole.
Nice 🐾🔥⚒
Edit: first twice in the same week! Woo-hoo !🏆

I find this to be true with most things I make
You should have left the part where you blew the candle out, John.
I would think a guy like You would have a generator just in case.
I do, but not permanently wired with auto start. Power needs to be out quit a while in the house to be worth worrying about and I can usually find things to do in the shop that don't require power.
