  • A spatula with bottle opener handle is a classic blacksmithing project for beginning and intermediate smiths alike. Here is my take on this simple forging project.

    I'm so glad this channel hasn't changed for views. It has all kinds of forging, and very little if any knife making videos. I always know I'm going to learn something completely new or different. Even with hook of the week. It shows how different processes can be incorporated into the same end goal with a completely different result.

    Thanks for sharing with us John, I was given a spatula and fork from a club member years ago in Colorado, it was the first attempt he made. I am still very proud of that set and it brings back so many memories. It’s funny that this friends first name was John.

    As I work more at the anvil, which I’ve only been at it for a few weeks, I see that I have some of the same issues that you do with the fiddley bits. I thought it was just beginner frustrations but it is just things we have to learn to deal with. Thank you for your excellent instruction

    • @BlackBearForge

      Sometimes the difference between being happy with the outcome vs being unhappy is just due to a few minutes of fiddling and adjusting.

    Back to the scrap bucket we go! 😁 I used a slightly rusted 5/16" round fence post on a spatula. The slight pitting of the rust gave a nice textured finish once it was cleaned, blackened in the forge, and finished.

    Nice one. Never seen that combination before. Perfect for the cook that likes to have a beer (or two) while cooking or when the recepie calls for beer. Bottle openers always gets lost, while spatulas rarely ever goes missing. Got me thinking about other multi purpose/combination tools and items. How about an all-in-one fireplace shovel and broom? The broom on one end and the shovel on the other end of the handle. The perfect gift for someone you don´t like (or just for fun) 😁

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  4 года назад +1

      I often use the broom to sweep ashes into the shovel, so it might be an awkward combination.

    Don't forget to file a nice long bevel on the bottom edge of the spatchula so it slides under your food easier in the pans or on the grill! I is a reall bummer when you try turning food and it pushes up or rolls into a pile on you! Lol

    Great project! Is there something you could do to the blade part of the spatula,finish wise? Looked like you put the bees wax on it and it was still kinda rusty. May have been my phone. Other than that I loved it and will have to give it a go! Keep on ⚒️ing my friend!!

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  4 года назад +1

      That light surface rust seals in with the bees wax and just leaves a nice brown color. SOme people pay extra for that type of finish.
