Mara, an easier way to remove the front or any wheels is to raise the vehicle so the tyre is just off the ground, loosen and remove all the wheel nuts but the top one.... then move in front of the wheel and remove the last top nut then wobble the tyre off the axle, then you do not need extra help as the tyre is on the ground and easier to handle than lifting and lowering a heavy tyre... Eric, it is great to see you doing things slowly with Mara so she can see and learn as you go, which will help her when issues come up then she will have an idea of what and where things are.
Usually LH products have a notch in them to mark LH. In theory the heim joint is strong up to the minimum thread length of the diameter of heim joint. I also would suggest using a bolt to thread into the bung while welding. I use to set up the heim joint in the middle of useable thread length. Also if you have clearance you can weld a nut (threads removed) in the middle to help with adjustment or notch two flats that would fit a wrench.
