  • I've always been a big fan of puzzles games, and over the last several months, have grown to enjoy the spine-chilling feel of horror games (within limits...lol), and from what I've heard - Little Nightmares is a perfect blend of both! Never played them, but wanted to for a very long time - and with 3 of these puppies out now, I think it's time for me to finally check them out.
I really hope you have an awesome time, and if you do, it would be amazing if you'd consider subscribing.
    Thanks,
    Benjamight

I love how the larger story context creates this deeply chilling, tragic, mind-blowing moment out of STANDING NEXT TO A SAUSAGE ON THE FLOOR. Like, without prior knowledge, it just looks like the most dramatic sausage ever discovered. :)

RIGHT!! Oh my, I freaked out when that happened... was a mind-blowing twist, that didn't arrive until 3 DLCs later!

So now that you've finished Little Nightmares and its DLCs so let's talk a bit about Nowhere itself. Now I'll preface this by what I'm about to say is largely confirmed or heavily implied stuff but also some widely believed theories and a few of my own too but could be false and with each new installment in this franchise some of these things could very well be disproven or recontextualized so take it all with a grain of salt but most of this is what is believed to be going on given all the stuff in the franchise so far(including some dev interviews). So here's the most likely accurate info on Nowhere.
So as I mentioned before Nowhere is the place where all Little Nightmares works take place. What I also didn't say is this nightmarish world of Nowhere is very much alive. It's true form is kinda an endless mass of gelatinous flesh, gore and eyeballs. You remember that globe at 35:55, that could very well be a somewhat accurate representation of what Nowhere's true form may look like tho Nowhere being in the shape of a planet is not at all confirmed and very well could be an endless expanse or some other twisted warped reality plane of existence we just can't comprehend. The eye imagery you see everywhere? That's in a way Nowhere's signature on it's creations. It also symbolizes that Nowhere always is watching and it knows everything that goes on in it's world from Six sneaking by those chefs to the Lady brushing her hair to a rat scurrying in a pipe. As far as we know nothing is hidden from Nowhere's gaze.
The locations you visit in Nowhere are largely created by the very fabric of Nowhere itself. There aren't really builders or architects in this world per say. For instance no one really built the Maw, "the Maw exists because hunger exists" the game narrative designer said. In other words Nowhere itself built the Maw(tho the monsters run it). Why?
Well in the world of Little Nightmares there are two worlds. The Waking World and Nowhere. The Waking World is basically this universe's version of Earth where its normal everyday society. A lot about Nowhere is very much a mystery but it feeds off of the suffering of children. Most if not all the children in Nowhere did not originate from Nowhere but came from the Waking World lured there by the Nowhere seemingly fulfilling their desires and needs and offering a way to escape the abuse and trauma done to them by adults in the Waking World but it's not till they cross over to Nowhere that they realize that the Nowhere manipulated them and by that point they are stuck in Nowhere for the rest of their existence.
Nowhere targets abused kids because they are the easiest to manipulate. Nowhere is a reflection of the waking world of the trauma children have experienced at the hands of adults. And the abuse that the children fled to Nowhere to get away from is then used to torment them in Nowhere. Why does the Maw exist? Because there are children out there who have been abused through hunger and starvation and were prob promised by Nowhere that they would get to be a part of an endless feast but little did they know they would be the feast. So Six and the Runaway Kid were likely once from the Waking World before coming here to escape an abusive situation(whatever those situations are who knows) only to end up someplace far worse. Eventually once you stay in Nowhere long enough you forget who you once were and this nightmare world specifically designed to make these kids suffer as much as possible is all you know.
Nearly all the enemies in Nowhere are also adults most likely because the children were abused by adults in the Waking World so it just adds to their suffering. It's also possible some of these adults were abusers who somehow came from the Waking World to continue tormenting kids but who knows. Now this is not to say that all the Residents of Nowhere(monsters or any one in Nowhere that isn't a kid) are on the same page as Nowhere especially some of the more advanced ones. The Residents have their own "societies" that aren't directing connected to Nowhere but still fulfil Nowhere's need for suffering. Now while making children and everyone suffer is def on their priorities they do sometimes have other priorities. Nowhere feeds off the suffering of everyone in Nowhere from largely the children that happen to cross over but also the monsters that inhabit this world. Everyone suffers under Nowhere's gaze but those with more power often suffer less in Nowhere.
And that brings us to The Lady. There is still much mystery surrounding her character. This is my read on her character given the first game and DLC. She at some point took over the Maw and once a year the Maw rises out of the sea to welcome about the Feeders to eat but what they don't realize is they never leave the Maw and instead are either cut up and fed to the other guests or their lifeforce absorbed into the Lady.
The Lady Statues prob is where she stores some of her power. The Flotsam are prob an older less refined version of the power storing. But as Six and the Runaway Kid go around and break all the statues or open all the bottles she gets weaker and that giant vase/urn you found with the half face book prob was her most powerful power store. All this power possibly was just an effort to make her continue to look beautiful unlike what we see in the mirror and is prob why she almost always wears a mask to hide her ugly face. In an effort to prolong her life it seems to still be destroying her body. With all those power stores gone the Lady would be much weaker and is prob one of the reasons why Six was able to defeat.
Many people have wondered why the mirror Six used used was able to hurt the Lady especially given we see her look in a mirror in The Residence with a very different reaction. Some have speculated it's a special mirror and it def could be but i also like the theory that Nowhere is responsible. If you remember when the boss battle started all the lights went out till a light from the ceiling came down in various parts of the room. The mirror could not work without the light so why did the lights keep coming back on despite the Lady clearly wanting them off. This could totally be just a "it's a boss battle mechanic thing" tho I like to believe Nowhere was shining that light down on Six. We've seen Eyes shine light at us before and we know Eyes symbolizes the presence of Nowhere and maybe its a mixture of the special mirror and Nowhere's light that was able to wound the Lady? Why would Nowhere want the Lady dead? Maybe she'd outlived her usefulness, maybe her constantly trying to live forever Nowhere didn't like, maybe it saw plans it could do with Six who knows and a large part of this Lady section is speculative.
There are still so many things I left out and didn't mention(and even a number of things I may have been misleading on lol) cause I don't want to spoil any of the games or the comics or the audio drama since you seemed interested in all of it. But I'd thought I'd give you a brief synopsis on Nowhere and the Lady. Even being fully caught up on the franchise I still have so many lingering questions on Little Nightmares and Nowhere as you prob will too and remember a decent mount of this stuff about Nowhere is confirmed or heavily implied but nothing is set in stone and be aware some stuff may change down the line
I just feel so bad for the kids who got tricked into coming here. I hope you find all this Nowhere lore interesting and see for when you do Little Nightmares 2 cause theres so many mysteries still to unravel.

If you place close attention to the mirror and the lady herself, you will see that the mirror reflects what she thinks she is or what she is on the inside, but see her on the right of the mirror? She looks normal, she hates what the mirror shows and that is why she breaks them all.
I loved your face when you realized that HE IS the one lol
That post credit of the tv is a nod to the 2nd game, the thin man

Oh, so it's the mirror showing her that... I thought that's what she actually looked like, but was hiding it somehow. I guess if it's showing 'inner beauty' or something along those lines, that would make sense too, since obviously, anyone going around sucking the soul out of people or turning children into Nomes would have to be pretty ugly inside...lol.

Loving this so far Ben! And 19:25 , If you think this game is great, I actually personally think the second game is the best so far lol It ties in to the first game so well, and is much creepier :D But the DLC in this game is wild too, such a fun concept. Can't wait to see more of this game!

4 whole months of waiting. That's torture lol. But spooktober def fits the theme espeically given Little Nightmares 2 is considered way scarier than the first(I def agree with this)

I am extremely impressed with you getting the Half face book secret puzzle. You are the only youtuber I've ever seen get that achievement on their first playthrough so awesome job and has some lore implications so good on finding it too. You also did a fantastic job finding the Flotsum this DLC you found 4 out of 5 of them. Good catch with the Maw model. You are right that is a Maw model. I never thought of how we use the flashlights on the monsters when the eye light rays were used on us previously. Cool analysis.
I totally agree that the puzzles in this DLC are really good. I love how how open the puzzle area is and how all the parts are connected in some way. Other than completely not realizing that you could simply jump up to get the key you did really good solving these puzzles and it was awesome seeing you enjoy and be so proud of yourself with each puzzle you solved.
So about the two twists. First off. Shockingly we learn all the Nomes were once children that the Lady turned into Nomes. Other than the shadows of the Nomes in the Hideaway and the general childlike nature of the Nomes I think it's an impossible to see reveal coming yet it works so well with the lore and recontextualizes a lot which are the best kind of reveals/twists. What also makes it so good is it's not just a twist but world building too giving us a backstory on the Nomes Children who misbehave usually are just eaten but it seems a few end up being unfortunate enough to be turned into Nomes and then forced to be little servants around the Maw also still hunted and hated by the residents of the Maw. Sometimes we forget that these are kids likely no older than 10 we play as and encounter and to live in a world like this especially after being turned into a Nome must be so traumatic.
Especially sad for The Runaway Kid which brings me to the second even better twist imo. The Nome Six ate was The Runaway Kid. I think this is one of the best twists in video game history. It's so perfect on so many levels. First off it just makes perfect sense as a narrative progression from the Nome twist. So we turned The Runaway Kid into a Nome, what's the most tragic and fitting way to end his story? Let him be the one Six eats. I doubt anyone thinks about it as they play through the DLC but in hindsight given how the main game goes it is obvious that The Runaway Kid will very likely not successfully "run away" so how to conclude their story in a way that also ties into the main game? Have him be the Nome. I am an ABSOLUTE sucker for coming full circle type storytelling and this is one of the best examples by ending the DLC journey at one of the biggest moments of the first game. I also think it's so much more powerful that we don't see Six eat the Nome. We know what happens but the Runaway Kid ends his journey having no idea what fate awaits him any second. We just slowly zoom away as the fantastic "Room with a View" music plays. I love the achievement that we get when we complete it "We will Meet Again" its such an ironic and haunting phrase cause it gives the impression it's a happy meeting but it isn't and then "The Final Chapter is Written" because there's no saving the Runaway Kid his fate is sealed. One thing I also love about the twist is the dramatic irony. The Runaway Kid is completely clueless as to the significance of that sausage but we the audience are all to well aware of what it means and no matter how much we try and warn him or wish for him to run from the sausage we can't do nothing because he is oblivious to what awaits him.
Another thing I love about these DLCs and the twist is tbh the Runaway Kid, we barely know anything about him as a person. We honestly know way more about Six as a person because of her hunger story and how she interacts with the Nome and others. We can see she has some complexity to her. The Runaway Kid meanwhile, we know he has a kind heart with how he treats the Nomes but that's about it but we as the player project ourselves onto the character we play as in a way. And that projection helps makes the tragedy of the runaway Kid even better because it's our character, we are supposed to keep him alive but we fail. It's similar how when Six ate the Nome we had a separation between the player and their character meanwhile when the Runaway Kid finds the sausage there is once again a separation between player and character because of the extra knowledge we hold and ironically its the same event that does both things which is awesome. The Nome being eaten is already sad but learning its the human child character you have played as for the past three DLCs its all the more tragic.
Also there's a theory that Six suspected that the sausage was made of child meat(which it could have been) so chose to eat the Nome instead because they were a different species not realizing they actually were the same species. Doesn't make it right and is only a theory but its a nice added tragic twist if so.
It's sad that the Runaway Kid we don't know his name but tbh not knowing his name I think makes his story even stronger. He has no name because he does not actually matter to the wider narrative of this game(Six's story). He is a nobody. There's a reason the Runaway Kid's story is a DLC and not part of the main game. Without him Six would still go through her journey as normal. He is but a stepping stone to her goals. He lived as a nobody without a name and died one too. And no one will ever even remember him.
Also that television scene in the credits was a small tease for Little Nightmares II. That was a figure you saw. I won't say anything more.
So glad you enjoyed the whole game and it's DLCs. Love how already into the world and lore of this series you are and can't wait for you to check out more. I do have a question. Currently what is your read on Six's character. This super young child in this nightmarish world. Is she just bloodhungry, is she evil, is she a savior, is she good, what's her backstory, whats with her hunger, who is she, etc. She is a super interesting character to me and all I'll say is this is not the last youll see of her in this franchise whether that means other games or other media (comics/audio drama) who knows but I'm curious on your current read of her with just the first game and DLCs in mind.

VERY well written Palintir - and you are so right... the first twist, followed by the second twist just shortly after that, was CCRRRAAAZZZYYYY!! You know, I don't want movie trailers for movies I already know I want to see, because I have this really bad habit of ruining the movie for myself when I do. I can't help but remember what I saw, so in a movie when it looks like someone "might" die, in the back of my mind, I'm already thing "Well, I KNOW they don't die (or they come back), because I haven't seen them in that spot I saw in the trailer yet"... so I've avoided them for years now. A lot of times too, trailers can give away so much of the story, that I don't need to see much and I'm already guessing some of the plot points.
So I say that to say I LOOOOOOVE it when I can play a game (or movie) can catch me with something I don't see coming. Little Nightmares DLC #3 did that, not just once - but TWICE... and within like 60 seconds from one another... and I was ecstatic! That's why I really freaked out at that second twist, because I was like "NO WAY!! They got me AGAIN!!" So fantastic, I loved it.
I was pretty proud of solving that face-book achievement puzzle too - I remember pointing out that face when I first arrived there, and after that bookshelves puzzle later, I knew there had to be something to that - so glad I went back for it.
What are my thoughts on Six... man, I'll have to give that some thought - because what I thought of her during the game, and what I think of her since learning about all the lore from the comment section, has changed a lot. I'll do some thinking on that and either make a follow up post, or include it maybe at the start of my Little Nightmares II playthrough.

@BenjamightGaming I totally get your movie trailer mindset. I too rarely watch movie/show trailer nowadays. I like going into movies as blind as possible especially when it's something I'm interested. And you are so right sometimes the trailers or marketing for a movie gives away way too much. Funnily enough that's an issue I have with Little Nightmares II, before I got around to playing I tried my best to stay away from all stuff relating to the game so I could go in blind but I was exposed to some of it's marketing so was aware of something that happened in the game but because I saw it in the marketing I didn't think it was a big deal knowing it but after playing the game I realized they spoiled a huge plot point of the game in their marketing and still a unbelievable and fantastic experience but I wish I had gone in truly blind and still don't get why they would spoil something that big from their own game like that in their marketing especially with how good this plot point is. Luckily there were so many other twists and turns I had no idea about so still plenty of suprises I had while playing.
I hope you are not spoiled like I was when you get around to Little Nightmares II, Mapocolops luckily wasnt and his reaction to that plot point was terrific. For an imo perfect game it's too revealing marketing is the only issue I have with it.
And yeah your reaction to both twists were great. I loved how as you were mid thought on "what if I'm one of the Nomes Six comes across" you see the sausage and instantly which Nome you were. It's a good thing that sausage came when it did cause you were on the right track and I think given a few more seconds you prob would have geussed the twist but it revealed itself before you could lol
Totally get taking your time on the Six question. It's def a complicated one lol. Just given everything I know about her character across the franchise I think it's very interesting hearing someones thoughts on her character when all you have is just the first game to go off of and no other games or media in the franchise. As I went through everything in the franchise I know my thoughts on her def changed and evolved.

Oh man, one of the big advantages to playing a game so long behind the launch window, is all the marketing is done...lol. I'm glad I didn't see whatever was spoiled for you. When I finally reach whatever point that was in the playthrough, feel free to point it out to me.

Man , can't wait for Little Nightmares 2 . That scene after the credits was just a little teaser >:) . And yes it's way creepier .
The Lady starts to look like The Granny . A lot of theories around that .
The reveal at the end really hurts . After all that effort The Runaway Kid didn't accomplished his goal of escaping .
