@@artcorbeau Jokes aside, I think Azula wasn't bad at her role. She didn't look the part physically, but she acted like the jealous, manipulative, and power hungry tyrant's daughter she is.
Ozhai was a snack daddy. A true malevolent tyrant, who disposes the weak.
Huge missed opportunity to have a shot of the eclipse aligning in their planetarium, but both the Sage and Ozai overlook it in their arrogance. Would’ve been a cool wink to the audience.

Netflix cooked with the expanded zuko iroh ozai dynamic, can’t wait for season 2
I love the live action they made, i definitely will understand why some people might not like it cause they had to condense a 20+ episode season to 8 episodes so not all storylines will be told. But the pacing, story flow, cgi, choreography were all working for me. The weakness of the show is the acting from the kids can be stiff and wooden sometimes, but it’s good enough to just get by and i’m hopeful by season 2 and 3 their acting will get even better! i just want to see Toph live action.

@@christianlouthful if you’re nitpicking sure. But there were clearly moments in the live action where the CGI shined. There were some sloppy parts but it wasn’t enough to say it’s ruined and another shyamalan film adaptation. The whole show is literally mostly CGI since it requires it for bending, even good looking CGI heavy shows like Game of Thrones dont require as much CGI as Avatar The Last Airbender does so i’m amazed by the quality/quantity ratio alone.

I do agree that the acting is pretty bad, which can’t be blamed solely on their age. The kids from stranger things and IT did a great job and they were the same age or younger.
- They had almost the exact same time for the first season as the cartoon since the episodes were an hour long vs 25ish minutes
- the cgi is definitely better than the live action movie, but it’s still not the best.
- the storyline is all over the place to where I could barely follow what was going on. They crammed four different stories all with the episode in omashu and it was completely unnecessary.
Extremely disappointing and just makes me want to watch the cartoon again to help me forget this dumpster fire

It happened in the original but not like this - Bumi surrendered right away to prevent any fighting, the city was renamed New Ozai by Azula, and then Bumi patiently waited until the Eclipse to singlehandedly drive all of the Fire Nation out

Personally, i don’t like this portrayal of azula. She’s supposed to be calm, collected, calculating, sure of herself. She only ever lost her cool at the end of the series. In this adaption, she seems more prone to outbursts and can’t control herself.
Yeah you can definitely say that, but technically Azula wasn’t introduced until season 2, having her in season 1 I feel was a build up to the her we all want to see in season 2. I think she will do great in season 2.

@@Meestordandan I feel like they have a lot of minor fixes they need to make with a lot of the female characters, a lot of the male characters carried the essence of the original characters where as the females really could’ve been brand new characters.

This scene heavily parallels to the first episode! Sozin had his men distracted others into thinking that they’d targeted the earth kingdom, but it was the air nomads that was Sozin’s true target, and CLEARLY Ozai to a page from his grandfather 😮

Hot take but I really didn’t like a decent amount of the casting. I can’t take Azula’s actress seriously at all, Yue didn’t seem right, and Katara was also just not very fitting. Iroh I’m on the fence on but he is just such an iconic character. Everyone else is pretty good though
Katara’s actress has the physical appearance down pretty well but aside from that she just ain’t it, but that can probably be blamed on the scriptwriters and directors. Azula is horrible lol

Is it me, or Ozhai looks like Shang Tsung?
Honestly, i thought the show was mid.
I fully went into it and expected a much different adaptation, and honestly i wanted it. I didnt want it to be 1:1 to the OG show. But there was just as much i liked about it then what i didnt. Below are my reasons:
Firstly, i think the show shined its best when they did something completely new and original that the OG show didn’t have. Like the genocide. And when they did 1:1 recreation moments, I thought they did good as well. But the biggest issue to me is when they did 1:1 moments, but changed them drastically.
I disliked Kyoshi because they basically made her a jerk that had zero sympathy towards aang. She just bullied him for her scene. I disliked Bumi because they also turned him into a bitter jerk. And he became completely unlikable to me. I liked Zuko, and I liked what they did with his character and how it's different, but at times he was too jolly in the way he spoke which turned me off from seeing his character as one who has had serious trauma from the agni kai. Avatar Kuruk was bitter as well which really sucked, and they basically trashed him as an avatar.
And roku.... *sigh*... my favorite past avatar they just butcher. Terrible casting, because although he's got the looks he sounds nothing like Roku. And although differences in that are fine, obvisouly the actors arent going to sound exactly the way they do in the OG, roku has a whole demeanor to him. The actor sounds like hes in his early 30's, and talks nothing like the way Roku should. He acts like the fun uncle. I should know because i am a fun uncle lol. And they make him out to be a bit bitter as well, because at the end he tells Aang friendships arent good for the avatar. At this point in the story, the avatars should be lifting up Aang in support, not bringing him down.
I thought the way they combined some stories and not others actually fit pretty well, but the one thing I thought was too forced was Jet and freedom fighters. First of all, Pipsqueak was TERRIBLE casting. I actually laughed out loud in disbelief and had to pause the show when he walked on screen. Pip is a grown man, not a teen thats not threatening at all whatsoever, especially when they tried to make him so. Just terrible casting. And honestly made me feel like it would have been better off to not have them in it at all.
Production wise it was great, music was great, but some of the costumes were too cosplay-like. Jet and the freedom fighters are a great example. They look like great 1:1 comparisons, but they are too good. It literally looks like a cosplay/fan film costume that isn't realistic to the world. And although Jets actor was great, that hair just looks wayyyyyyyyyy too fake, even if it wasnt a wig. Speaking of, Yua's wig in the northern tribe was laughable. Its ridiculous that got passed to be on screen as realistic.
Another issue is that the language spoke just didnt always feel fitting. Media, short of it being a modern day flick or documentary, is supposed to take you out of the world and immerse you elsewhere. 90% of the show did that, but then people would say things that i would hear one of my friends say. Case in point is Katara telling Sokka "Im sure master paku is going to mop the floor with me". Like what? And then the cursing. I get its more mature, but its just not Avatar, especially since its technically based on the past.
Aang also seems much more useless in the show. He never waterbends (the spirit at the end doesnt count) which concerns me because he was supposed to at least start learning water bending. He spends every episode "ahh I failed the world, i have to bring balance and learn the elements" but does nothing to accomplish that. Instead, he either bullies himself with the same old i ran away speech, or someone bullies him and he never learns water bending. He never does it once! And next season he's supposed to be starting on earth. I know theres a two year time jump between seasons but is that really how its gonna be? Aang is only going to learn other bending off screen? You cant have him start water next season otherwise how do you expect him to also learn earth at the same time. I feel cheated on seeing that growth, and feels like, as the audience, I'm going to be left behind from seeing that. It also makes me worried for how they'll treat the other elements going forward. With that, aside from kyoshi i just felt the avatar, aang, wasn't really doing much at all. Aang didn't do much as the avatar he just went places. It felt more like Katara's show.
The finale fell flat as well for two reasons. One, water bending never really felt different. It always looked as if water bending was the same two to three moves over again, even for the masters. The show shined when combat showed something different, but it didn't do it much. It also felt slow. Sped up, water bending is a lot coolor to watch live action. Secondly, the fish spirit fell flat because it didn't really do anything. In the show, it wiped out nearly all the firebenders with several water moves and waves. The fish did a water slap once, and then did the wave thing at the end which totaled about 30 seconds of screen time. Every other shot was just a godzilla rip off. For the rest of its time on screen it just roared like godzilla and looked around. So it fell flat as a result.
I doubt anyone will read this all, but if you do I'd love to hear your thoughts. I had a good time watching, but it just ended up being.. mid.
I think when Roku was talking about friendship he was thinking about Fire Lord Sozin. They were best friends at one point. So all Roku knows is betrayal.

I've read everything! And I appreciate your hindsight on the show. I wanted to enjoy it, but the way they twisted the narration didn't click. Like you said, at the end Aang still (theoretically) doesn't know how to waterbend, because since the beginning he went from place to place, with no beat to have Katara try teaching him the basics, and even after their arrival at the North Tribe... Master Pakku turned his back and deemed him a failure. Great. (And I won't get started on how they butchered Pakku's character lmao)
No, to me the biggest flow of the show is... Where's the humor? Season 1 is the funniest at all, because humor and detours were PRECISELY what drove Aang away from a proper training at waterbending. Season 1 is about to have the spectator discover this universe, the habits and cultures of that world, and more importantly: the cowardice to face one's duty. Aang is 12, and just wants to have fun and discover the world. He's scared to face his responsibilities but he MUST. And Roku and everyone encourages him. In this show, just like you said, the opposite happens: every single past Avatar drives his down, and all his friends of the past as well. Like, seriously, BUMI being bitter at him??
And I'm not even talking how they butchered Aang's wisdom too. Aang is a curious boy, who always sees the bright side of things, he hopes, he tries to understand the other... So have him to talk back like he did to Uncle Iroh in the prison of Omashu, I was so disappointed. To have him be so self-deprecating and as a whole, to see ATLA tipping that hard into the "dramatic" side of the story... No. No no no. The animated series was about balance (how ironic) between humor (kids' show) and seriousness (there's still war context and all the sadness it implies, as well as characters' stories).
They tried to remake the exact combat scenes frame to frame, but at the same time forgot to bring the heart of the OG show, which was the humor, that humor that brought the protagonists together. ATLA, it's Aang and Sokka doing funsies and stupid gags while Katara tries to survey and mother them, because she thinks she must be responsible. It's about Sokka learning not to underestimate someone because they're a girl, so it can have a repercussion on the last part in North Tribe with Master Pakku. It's Aang who is a 12yo boy who wishes to have fun, and is reminded he needs to save the world, but everyone brings him down and is bitter at him.

Tbh...yes the visual of azula in this netflix doesn't look like azula (what i meant, don't need to find an exact copy from a cartoon azula but well...should have casted the person who has some of azula's visual like her wicked expression or something and her aura tbh) not gonna body shaming...but well yeah the netflix should have done better to cast someone. And tbh they should re cast Mei/Mai too 🙃 she doesn't even look like her...

With the showrunner gone, hopefully the writing for Azula’s going to improve. It was never her acting, it’s the way they wrote this character, same with Katara. Azula is not a screaming type leader. Would have been more on point had someone else been giving the speech while we saw Azula just sitting silently in a chair while smirking.

I think they packed way too much into this single season. Like we got lightning bending, Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, the fall of Omashu, and more past Avatars all in this one seasons. It's severely risks making season 2 feel empty as most of that season's huge reveals were front loaded into this first season.
I didn't hate the pacing by any means, but the animated version is clearly superior and it really made me appreciate how that series choose to develop and focus key parts in the early seasons and save other parts for later seasons when they can be given the focus they deserve. Plus, it make the tension, pacing, and escalating stakes much better. Ex: We didn't need to know about Azula in the first season, all that does is distract from the main conflict between Aang and Zuko and Aang and Zhao. But bringing her in later escalates the stakes and now she's not fighting for screentime with more characters.
I actually liked seeing azula being in season 1 but at the same time I can understand why this change bothered you
it only botheres me with the fall of omashu and that ty lee + mai are already there, it makes sense for azula to be shown to see what she is doing the entire time. Ty lee and mai should have been in episode 1 in season 2 with the circus and the fall of omashu where azula did meet them again the first time in years but well it is what it is now, tbh i didnt like that they didnt include the northern airtemple and put the storyline into the omashu episode with the freedom fighters, 3 storys in one episode is too much in my opinion at least in that episode, i havent felt anything for this episode except for the cabbages and secret tunnel parts lol (i liked that they took the secret tunnel storyline from season 2 though)

I hoped Azula gets her redemption arc later in seasons 2 or 3 (since the OG didn’t).
She is much of a victim as her brother Zuzu since their father sees them as tools of war.
All they have done is to win their father’s love and approval.

I’m gonna say it while the cgi is good the some of casting is bad and the dialogue off sometimes and if you’re a fan of the the og you gonna hate it bcs of many character arc has been axed. It’s a good attempt a 6.5/10
You're too generous , it's more like a 5/10 , but yeah none of the characters have soul or "character" ironically.. while the visuals look good , it's all to deter you away from the mediocre acting and writing underneath. Disappointing. But we expected as much from Netflix, amirite
Right, the acting is terrible. I can't feel any emotion. But the fir bending effects are cool, though. I hope the next season will adapt a fast-paced bending action and a more immersive world that doesn't like CGI-ish. Oh, btw, why azula here has some emotional issues far from the overconfident, cunning, and strong azula in the original?

Its been really well done, they dropped the ball on a few elements ( missing out half the good stuff, Butchered Bumi, Aang not learning waterbending WTF!!, ) but overall not bad i just wish the series was longer and all the elements of the OG were fleshed out more alot of elements ( spirit world ) were really rushed and needed more time to cook, they also underplayed Roku, and also really overdid the meeting of the other avatars when what it needed was more of aang actually learning waterbending and actually training to be the avatar, Aangs motivation through the series has come across as lazy and really under developed, the whole female empowerment they've got going with katara was a bit unnecessary too i feel they didn't let aang learn waterbending so it gave Katara more time to shine which was ok i guess but they did it soo much better in the OG.
