I Still Call Australia Home was written on one of his long periods mostly in the US. As much as he was an international star, he missed Australia, and his hometown of Tenterfield. Probably his greatest song is Tenterfield Saddler, his personal journey, with a father who committed suicide after coming back from war, and his grandfather (the saddler) who became his de facto father, and eventually marrying the 'girl with the funny face' (Minelli). The song brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it, and likewise I Still Call Australia Home can also bring tears, even to those who are not Australian. That is the power of a great song writer. This song actually made a young man cry🥹 Moving back in 2 years thank god
Being an Aussie, I get the emotional reaction, but it blows me away, that all the reaction videos of people from overseas seem to have an emotional reaction to it as well!
Qantas have used this song for a number of years, every couple of years they make an epic ad that pulls at the heartstrings. This years was delayed due to COVID and hits harder as the shut down has isolated many people around the world who haven’t been able to travel home, or from people visiting loved ones overseas. We are a multicultural country with levels high immigration so we travel a lot despite how far away we are from a lot of the world. It’s cheesy to be emotional over an ad, but the song is amazing, the performers are perfect and while we love our country it occasionally takes something like this to remind us how awesome this place is to come home to.
This wonderful song was written by the amazing Peter Allen.... My daughter was in one of the first Qantas campaigns that used this iconic tune, for the Athens olympics when she was 10 years old.... She is now 28 and a doctor!! I just adore it.. So proud to be an Aussie xx
QANTAS is an acronym. Queensland and Northern Territory’s Air Service. There were quite a few prominent Aussies in there but others have already mentioned them. This song always grabs at the heartstrings of Aussies, particularly when travelling away from home. Great video mate…
One of our most beautiful unofficial anthems. And this is one of the most touching ad's of the series. Beautifully shot, angelic voices and just the right mix of celebrity and non celebrity Australians. One of my favorite parts is the opening scene, sand and spinnifex, panning up to The Rock. And nothing but the sound of the outback, stunning...... I'm so proud to call Australia home.
The opening shot is Uluṟu the spiritual heart of the country 🙏❤️ very often when you’re about to land from an overseas flight on qantas they put this audio on, you’ll have Aussies tearing up - Aussie have to go so far to get to the northern hemisphere that this song is like an unofficial national anthem. The song was originally sung and written by Peter Allen who Was married to Liza Minnelli at one stage - also QANTAS stands for Queensland and Northern Territory air service (Qld and NT being 2 states in Aus) cheers
The pink water was Hutt Lagoon in Western Australia. About halfway up the west coast. There’s at least three pink lakes in WA but that is definitely Hutt Lagoon. Peter Allen wrote the song. A musical about his life “The Boy from Oz” starred Hugh Jackman when it played on Broadway. Qantas, originally called Queensland and Northern Territory Air Service, is the oldest continuously operating airline in the world. It flies both domestically and internationally and has an incredible safety record.
@@Quinctili Lake Hillier isn’t easily accessible though. You can’t drive there, or even drive to somewhere nearby and hike. It’s on an island that is a nature reserve, your only choices are to fly over it or book a charter boat that only runs at certain times of the year. We drove right to the shore of Hutt Lagoon and it was only a short walk to the water’s edge.
@@miniveedub yes. No argument there. BUT, at no time did I write anything about driving or flying, or anything other than Lake Hillier being more spectacular in appearance. It is possible to Google both to check out, particularly if you're in America.
This song always brings me to tears. It's such a beautiful song. QANTAS (acronym for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service), who is our national airline and carrier, knows how to show Australia and our incusivity and diversity.
I've seen a few non-Australians react to that now and it constantly surprises how it affects them, just as it affects many Aussies in the same exact way lol
Mate, you can imagine how us Aussie feel when we get on a QANTAS plane on the way back to Aussie after an international visit. The song was written by Peter Allen who was married to Liza Minnelli. Mate, QANTAS is an international standard for safety. Grüße aus Australien.
I came home from o’seas a while ago and the plane banked over Sydney harbour and they played that bloody song❤and I burst into tears, I love Australia.
It gives us aussies chills too & we hear this song all the time. Qantas Airlines use it for their ads....Yes mate , that is an Aboriginal, the oldest living culture in the world....Of course Hugh Jackman is an Aussie. That was also Kylie Minogue (famous singer); Troye Sivan (also a singer). Famous Aboriginal footballer at Bondi Beach (Adam Goodes) & famous tennis player Ash Barty on the phone to her sister. That is a pink lake, made that colour by the salt concentration....You're not the 1st American to be moved by this....the other guy cried 🤷♂️
A lot of "reactor's" seem confused by the people singing - it fits in with the words: "no matter how far or how wide I roam" - Kylie Minogue (living in London) Troy Sivan (L.A.) & Hugh Jackman (N.Y.) The guy standing & whispering by the swimming pool is Adam Goodes (a champion player in the AFL) the 2 women in the water are the Campbell sisters, Bronte & Cate (both Olympic gold medalist swimmers. The young lady sitting saying I miss you, can't wait to see you" is Ash Barty ( tennis player & world's number 1.) The pink water is Lake Hume in Western Australia (an algae causes the colour, safe to swim in.) - the big rock at the start is Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Aus. - it stands 348m high BUT 2.5 km are still underground. Doesn't matter if it's the numerous Qantas ads over the years (using this song) or just hearing the song itself - I doubt ANY Aussie living/travelling anywhere in the world doesn't get a bit yet eyed when they hear it. The song - I still call Australia home - was written by Aussie Peter Allen who was married to Liza Minelli (even though he was gay) in the late "70's. QANTAS airline founded 1920 - stand for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services,
The two girls in the water are not both the Campbell sisters. One is Bronte but the other is a Paralympic swimmer. Have a look When the camera rises up you can see the outline of the girls legs. Excuse my ignorance not sure on her name.
As Australian I can assure you that they're aren't too many of us who can watch that without a year or two. It's not a new ad, it was first done years ago and reimagined now. Beautiful then, beautiful now.❤️
I am on the wrong side of 75. I am a native Australian (but not an an Australian Native). I am an American by Congress - but I still call Australia "Home". Thank you Mr. Peter Allen.
just stumbled on your channel and loved your genuine appreciation of this but especially the perfectly timed WAVING PHONE LIGHT - so appropriate haha - honourary Aussie now!
Uluru is so large, it takes approx 3 hours to walk around. Its also, in the ground "sideways" and goes approx 2km underground. A VERY sacred place to the First Nations. And there are 10 "pink" lakes in Oz.. It's the lakes' high salinity levels, combined with the presence of salt-loving algae and pink bacteria known as halobacteria that turn them bright pink.
Only parts of Ayers Rock AKA Uluru are sacred, thus they there is a small designated "men's business only" area whilst "women's business" area is much larger but again only certain parts. The Olga's AKA Kata Tjuta is much more sacred to the traditional land carers in the region, if you go visiting the two places, you do get that sense as well.
It was an ad for QANTAS… The safest airline in the world. QANTAS stands for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service. Just celebrated its 100th birthday. I love Peter Allen’s version of this song… chokes me up every time.
Yes, this was an ad made specifically for when Australia opened up after the pandemic. QANTAS is an acronym for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services which started in 1920. Its Australia’s international air service and has been for many years.
As other people have stated they play this on International flights back to Australia, just prior to landing, I think so it finishes just after landing. Gives every Australian a real feeling of being back home once more.
I’m crying as you’re doing your intro…You haven’t even pressed play yet! Feeling all the feels already! 🇦🇺💚💛 version is actually an advert for QANTAS. I know someone else has mentioned the original version by Peter Alan…amazing!
This is the Pink Lake just outside of Esperance Western Australia. It's actually called the pink lake because of an algae that causes the water to turn pink. It's the only place in the world with that particular algae, and yes, it really is that pink. I know. I've been there. It's stunning.
Hi Ryan. I enjoy your clips very much. Thanks for taking the time to post them. I can imagine how busy you are with the new baby. Yea, hell, I was away from Australia in India for 3 weeks and I still felt exactly the same way cruising in to land! I saw Sydney with new eyes - what an awesome gorgeous city!
I love that particular QANTAS commercial. Lots of famous Australians make an appearance in it but I particularly love seeing our indigenous people in it. Great work QANTAS!
This is a great song written by Peter Allen in 1980 (an Australian singer songwriter who lived in USA and died in 1992) and has been used by Qantas in its ads for some years. He also wrote another song which most Australians recognise called “The Tenterfield Saddler”. The lakes are pink from an algae that is believed to contain a beta carotene pigment. Qantas is Australia’s major airline and stands for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.
Hi Ryan! Great to see you reacting to this song/ad! QANTAS is actually an acronym - it stands for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service, named after its original route between the Australian state of Queensland, and the state (territory) of Northern Territory. It's actually the oldest commercial airline in the English-speaking world, and the second oldest around-the-world airline service. It's still the main airline in Australia, and famously recognisable by the red tail with the kangaroo (which you can see from the ground, even when the aircraft is really high up). :)
Yeah, I am Australian, been overseas since March and it did make me cry, simply can’t stop the tears flowing. Qantas has made several advertisements using the Australian Children’s Choir and it is always superb and emotive while showing the diversity of Australian landscapes and cultures.

“I Still Call Australia Home” is one of those songs EVERY Aussie knows. It was written by the legendary Peter Allen in 1979. Qantas has been using it for their advertising for at least a decade. Many people feel it would make a fantastic Aussie anthem instead of “Advance Australia Fair”.

It somewhat surprised me to hear the comments from the U.S. When it came to this song, the fact that this song is going back a long long way, the man who wrote it and sung it spent a good part of his life in the U.S., he was married for a time to Judy Garlands daughter Liza. His name was Peter Allen. This add has i think put all the meaning into the song by what it shows and the knowledge that it is a country so far removed from everyone else. I made the move here in 1990 so have lived here a while now, as someone involved in music for a good part of my life, music to me is an imotion, you feel it as well as hear it, if its good, really good, it moves you to tears, and believe me, it does just that for me, it says everything about this huge country and believe me, it is huge! I am a citizen of Australia and this song really should be the national athem of this great country bacause the words of the song tells the story of so many people like me that came here, and stayed here. The man who wrote it, did so from the heart, and i am sure had many of the pictures in his mind of this place as he put pen to paper, and after all these years it is bought back to life by the means of transport to this great land, For those who find a tug at the heart strings with this song should try listening to another song he wrote, about himself to a degree, its called Tenerfield Saddler, just listen to the words, tgey are just as moving.
I really cant see anything wrong with a man crying or being a bit teary if he feels emotional, it's not baby-ish. It's human. I hope you get to fly Qantas one day to Australia!
A few years ago I went on a cruise overseas, & yes I was so glad to be back on Australian soil! Ayres Rock as it was known it’s now known as Uluṟu, the Aboriginal name for it, second one was Kangaroos in the outback! Yes it was all shot around Australia 🇦🇺! The pink colour is from an algae that grows! Qantas is the letters of Queensland and Northern Territory Arial Service!

You always show such great respect and appreciation for our culture and Country. Many thanks. I'll keep tuning in. aj x
Qantas doesn’t have a ‘u’ after the ‘q’ because it is an acronym for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service. It’s our national airline with the best safety record in the world. No Qantas plane has ever crashed. It was founded on the 16th November 1920. The late Peter Allen wrote the song and now the song is synonymous with Qantas.
If it touched you, imagine how us Aussies feel. That lake is pink because of a strange type of algae. Qantas is one of the safest airlines in the world.
It’s been a few years since I’ve flown into Australia on a Qantas jet, but last time I did, they played this over the IFE system just before landing, and I swear there wasn’t an Aussie on that plane (self included) who wasn’t reaching for a tissue. It’s a very emotive song that tugs at every true Aussie’s heartstrings. I love it. Whether you’ve been away for a few years or just a few weeks, it’s a great way to come home.

Chills by the first “still call Australia home” and tears by the last one. Cannot listen to this song without becoming incredibly homesick. 5 years away and counting, hope to go home soon! Qantas is like American Airlines for Australia. Pronounced “kwan-tis” 😊
I remember coming back from backpacking and there were a whole bunch of other backpackers and waiting to get on our Qantas plane in Bangkok and that came on the big screen and we were all arm in arm singing and so proud to be coming home after our travels. It’s a song that resonates with every Aussie ❤
This was the QANTAS ad played after international border restrictions were lifted post Covid. It hit a lot of people hard in the feels. The grandmother meeting her grand baby for the first time was what got me.
This song makes me SO PROUD to be an Australian. We are one of the oldest countrites on earth, as evidenced by our aboriginal heritage, but one of the youngest according to western history. The beauty of Australia is not only in the natural blessings that God bestoyed on us, but of the freedom that we have to be who we want to be. Our multi-culturism is beyond reproach. All that we ask is that new citizens endeavour to leave past hatreds at the gate as they become Australian citizens. I have been a teacher for many years and I think the most important thing that I have ever taught my students was to value the freedom, embrace the differences and treasure what it is to be an Australian. Thank you for sharing, what is to me, a song which holds the most special place in my heart. I am one of the many PROUD AUSTRALIANS.
Peter Allen wrote I STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME when he was living in the US. The song has been the theme song for QANTAS for ages now. QANTAS is an anagram for QUEENSLAND AND NORTHERN TERRITORY AIR SERVICE, it's Australia's largest and oldest airline carrier.

I've been away from Australia in the USA for 7 years with my mum and my little sister who is born here. I really miss being back home in Perth and i always have Australia on my mind because I'm proud to be from such a great country. This song actually made a young man cry🥹
Moving back in 2 years thank god
Greetings from home then mate
That's what all Aussies feel for our homeland.....so much love ❤❤❤🇦🇺🦘
Being an Aussie, I get the emotional reaction, but it blows me away, that all the reaction videos of people from overseas seem to have an emotional reaction to it as well!
weird weird, maybe bc they ain us but wanna be us?
How wonderful for her! My daughter is 15 and singing this at a formal Qantas event this week.
QANTAS is an acronym. Queensland and Northern Territory’s Air Service. There were quite a few prominent Aussies in there but others have already mentioned them. This song always grabs at the heartstrings of Aussies, particularly when travelling away from home. Great video mate…
Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Ltd (Q.A.N.T.A.S) formed at Winton, Queensland
It was an acronym but now it's just Qantas.
Still is an acronym
One of our most beautiful unofficial anthems. And this is one of the most touching ad's of the series. Beautifully shot, angelic voices and just the right mix of celebrity and non celebrity Australians. One of my favorite parts is the opening scene, sand and spinnifex, panning up to The Rock. And nothing but the sound of the outback, stunning......
I'm so proud to call Australia home.
Sure beats Waltzing Matilda!
@@kawaii.. agreed
It flies both domestically and internationally and has an incredible safety record.
there are 10 Pink Lakes in Oz..
@@BassMatt1972 of those, Lake Hillier is the most spectacular.

I'm an Aboriginal Australian , and that song makes me cry every time I hear it, I'm so happy I was born in this lucky Country .
Last time I saw this I cried, this time held it together just. It's honestly one of the most iconic Australian songs.
I tear up every time I hear this. There’s something about being Australian that you just can’t put words to, it’s in our DNA.
Surely you're talking about iWrocker. I watched that one just before this, moved me both times.
@@thegoodberrygaming9578 Yes, Ian ✌✌
It's pink because of microscopic algae. But it is safe to swim in. & looks cool 😎
Everytime I leave Australia I realise how blessed I am to be born and live in Australia it's beyond special ❤️
Obviously I'm not the only Aussie emotionally affected by this beautiful song & filled with a strong sense of pride to be an Australian ❤️🇦🇺❤️
Play this to any Aussie who is away from home. Instant tears Peter Allen wrote it. The unofficial anthem
A lot of "reactor's" seem confused by the people singing - it fits in with the words: "no matter how far or how wide I roam" - Kylie Minogue (living in London) Troy Sivan (L.A.) & Hugh Jackman (N.Y.)
The guy standing & whispering by the swimming pool is Adam Goodes (a champion player in the AFL) the 2 women in the water are the Campbell sisters, Bronte & Cate (both Olympic gold medalist swimmers. The young lady sitting saying I miss you, can't wait to see you" is Ash Barty ( tennis player & world's number 1.)
The pink water is Lake Hume in Western Australia (an algae causes the colour, safe to swim in.) - the big rock at the start is Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Aus.
And "yes" the beautiful lady at the start is indigenous to this amazing land we call home...
As Australian I can assure you that they're aren't too many of us who can watch that without a year or two. It's not a new ad, it was first done years ago and reimagined now. Beautiful then, beautiful now.❤️
This song always makes me so proud to be Aussie. I cry everytime.
I am on the wrong side of 75. I am a native Australian (but not an an Australian Native). I am an American by Congress - but I still call Australia "Home". Thank you Mr. Peter Allen.
This is always a touching song for Australians - so glad it touched you too
just stumbled on your channel and loved your genuine appreciation of this but especially the perfectly timed WAVING PHONE LIGHT - so appropriate haha - honourary Aussie now!
Hugh Jackman actually played Peter Allen (who wrote the music and lyrics of I Still Call Australia Home) on Broadway in "The Boy From Oz"
So much Australian pride in one beautiful song. This always brings tears to my eyes, thanks for the reaction I enjoy your videos
@@petercrispin2129 And it's all been made up in the last 20 years.
The pink lakes look their best in an aerial photo that includes the turquoise water of the ocean nearby.
QANTAS "Queensland and Northern Territory Air Services" been going for about 100 years one of the safest airlines in the world.
not one of the safest airlines..... _THE_ safest airline
Qantas started in 1920, the year my mother was born. Both going strong at 102!
Rainman says safest.
AERIAL services!
I live in a small Australian town about 3 hours north of Melbourne called Charlton. It is sheep and cropping country with a population of around 1100 that sadly is in flood at the moment.
If l was in a position to do so l would pay to bring you and your family to our beautiful country so you could experience it first hand.
Keep up the great work.
Still brings a tear to the eye. All Aussies love this, I think.
As an Australian I always cry when I hear this song. Also Qantas is our national airline and one of the top 2 airlines in the world.
5:30 QANTAS is the first letters of the original airlines name. Queensland And Northern Territory Aviation Service.
Ryan Thank You for playing this Video.❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👍
P.S. I Enjoy all your Videos 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍Keep Up the Good Work 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
When Australia makes a good commercial, it's hard to beat.
Yeah, I am Australian, been overseas since March and it did make me cry, simply can’t stop the tears flowing. Qantas has made several advertisements using the Australian Children’s Choir and it is always superb and emotive while showing the diversity of Australian landscapes and cultures.
A nice song, and enjoyable to listen too. My personal favourite one is by 'The Seekers', called 'We are Australian'. Now that song is brilliant. You should check it out. Honest.
Just told him the same thing, as well as Georgie girl.
@@rickyd.989 Well said Sir. One classic that's impossible to forget is 'Morningtown Ride'. Still sung to this day. I even used to sing it to my siblings to help them sleep when l was in my youth. An absolute classic . Thanks for replying. Gratefully appreciated. The Seekers rock.
@@robertmcqueen289 You are a man of taste. I don’t know if it’s just me but when I listen to Georgie girl, not only am I captivated by Judith’s voice throughout the song, but I quiver with delight at the extra melodic sound of, “a little bit.” For some reason that just blows me away.
I agree with Morningtown Ride, especially with the kids on Puffing Billy. “I’ll never find another you.” All of them in fact.
Cheers mate.
Love this, in Australia we all would like it to become our Anthem, it’s very emotional and makes for feeling homesick..
Im pretty sure more people in Australia know all the words to this than they do to the actual national anthem.....in our defence though, I Still Call Australia Home didnt exist when the referendum was held to change our national anthem away from God Save the Queen........
always brings a tear to the eye so proud to be Australian
If you like that watch great Southern land form ice house
it'll show you our vast landscapes
Yes that is pink lakes from salt water 💧
Cheers mate glad you enjoyed most Aussie's 👍 love it
Ryan,, the feeling you have when listening to this song, we call it ""goosebumps " mate. true blue .
The man who wrote it, did so from the heart, and i am sure had many of the pictures in his mind of this place as he put pen to paper, and after all these years it is bought back to life by the means of transport to this great land,
For those who find a tug at the heart strings with this song should try listening to another song he wrote, about himself to a degree, its called Tenerfield Saddler, just listen to the words, tgey are just as moving.
Tenterfield please!
Yes he wrote from the heart, I believe Tenterfield Saddler was about his grandfather.
That song always brings a tear to the eye
You should check out our unofficial national anthem “ I am, you are, we are Australian”. Stunningly beautiful song.
I was 25 when this was written. 44 years later, it still brings tears. I miss Peter.
I really cant see anything wrong with a man crying or being a bit teary if he feels emotional, it's not baby-ish. It's human.
I hope you get to fly Qantas one day to Australia!
This is why Aussies are so passionate about their country. We have many songs which hit your heart and soul.
Ryan, today i'll be opening my radio music show with this version of 'I Still Call Australia Home' (as I do every anniversary in tribute to Australia Day) and it was a lovely buzz watching you react to it. This song never fails to move us Aussie's. I love all your reaction videos Ryan. Yes I agree regarding children's choirs. They're the most touching. (in case you didnt recognise or know the female singer at the piano - it's Australia's beloved legend and 'sister', Kylie Minogue, who currently has a residency at 'The Venetian Resort Las Vegas'.
'No Qantas plane has ever crashed.' Not correct, I'm afraid. No QANTAS jet plane has ever crashed, however. The last fatality was in 1951.
It should be our national anthem it mentions all countries from around the world a heart felt song.
If it touched you, imagine how us Aussies feel. That lake is pink because of a strange type of algae.
Qantas is one of the safest airlines in the world.
THE safest, with Hawaiian Airlines who are nearly as old as Qantas.
I think you were an Aussie in a past life! Definitely an honorary one in this life! ❤️🐨
QANTAS = is abbreviation for "Queensland and Northern Territory Air Service", Australia's national and international airline

You've never head of Qantas?, ONLY the safest airline in the World 🇦🇺
Apparently they have slipped down to seventh place. I hope they get their act together because they had been the worlds safest airline from 2014 to 2017.
@@joandsarah77 Only because airlines like Air Canada pay bribes. Qantas and Hawaiian are jointly the safest.

I remember coming back from backpacking and there were a whole bunch of other backpackers and waiting to get on our Qantas plane in Bangkok and that came on the big screen and we were all arm in arm singing and so proud to be coming home after our travels. When we used to fly on QANTAS they played this when the flights landed back home, it makes all Aussies cry....
I have lived in 7 countries and absolutely love flying back home to Sydney hearing that song play as we land.
Aussie who moved to NZ in 2018. Everytime I hear this it makes me cry and homesick.
You are so sweet. It is about time you moved to Australia, you would be safe and warm and happy , xx
So beautiful. Makes me proud to be Australian. The song was used for Qantas airline, but it was a song in its own right. A real tear jerker for me.
Always sends a chill for me to! Great advertising for Qantas! Great advert for Australia! There are other versions! Same song but with different locations!
