Vivid is the best! It’s not just lights, there’s talks, performances and food. It’s amazing to be there. Some events during the Vivid festival are paid ones but there’s a large amount of things that are free. The drone show isn’t every night but it’s a massive highlight if you can go the night they are on. It’s packed because of the festival by the way. The light features change each year. Vivid is a festival of lights in Sydney in the start of winter to encourage people to see Sydney in winter too.they use artists and light shows as a free family festival
I believe the original idea was to add some cheer to the chilly winter nights (as chilly as Sydney gets anyway). Displays are on every night throughout the festival
You’re almost there , the original idea is to actually keep the city alive in winter, as it gets colder foot traffic dies down considerably, it’s to get people back in the city after dark 😊
Happy Arvo Ryan! 🤗👍 Yes, it is amazing! Last year I saw most of it live and watched it again from a few videos to find things I may have missed! The live show is really far more stunning than any video can capture! It is free, the only cost is food stalls and souvenirs, it highlights mostly the CBD & Harbour! 😃 My favourite is the moving stories on the iconic buildings, kids love the interactive games and street performers! A lot of the vivid festival is free- you can just go to the harbour and watch. We went last year to celebrate my 60th birthday and had a dinner cruise that sailed right into the middle of the harbour, went under the bridge and past the opera house. it was awesome!

Vivid is a great thing for Sydney to put on during the winter when it used to be quiet for tourists.. it’s a little cold at night, but a light sweater will fix that
Housing prices are too expensive and it rains too much for me however I'd love to visit during Vivid but hotel prices would be through the roof. An absolutely beautiful city with a lot going on but I prefer living in one of Australia's less populated cities. 😊
@@heatherfruin2371 housing prices are too expensive across the world anywhere you are especially in Australia. Yes it rains like all cities globally, but It doesn’t rain as much as the other capital cities in Australia, actually far less than the north of Australia and less down south in Melbourne. Weather here is mostly perfect temperatures - yes it can be very hot in summer and a little on the chilly side in winter but not as hot as northern Australia and not as cold as inland or southern Australia.

The ‘Vivid Sydney’ festival is held over 3 weeks in late Autumn (May) to early Winter (June) to encourage locals and tourists to mingle in the Sydney CBD. Otherwise the city would be relatively quiet. More affordable accommodation is needed to make the CBD vibrant year round. Cost of Living is high in the more attractive parts of the CBD. Vivid gives people a reason to come in the cool months. Btw- In October - November (Spring) the ‘Sculpture By The Sea’ festival happens with installations spaced out along the coastal walk starting at Bondi Beach. Other places and states have the same festival, I think.
Oh I went that year and it was absolutely amazing. Can't believe they didn't show any of the giant frogs; those were another highlight for me lol. Vivid is definitely a must do, and every year it seems to get bigger and better. Whilst most of it is free, I think the harbour cruises get pretty pricey. There's another big light and drone show you might be interested in. It's on my bucket list. At Uluru they have a massive drone show where they retell a traditional Aboriginal story in the sky over Uluru. It's called Wintjiri Wiru Drone Show and the Ayers Rock Resort has a few videos on it. There's also a huge light installation called 'Field of Lights'.
One of the many free events in Sydney! People think Sydney is very expensive, and definitely accommodation can be, but there are many of free things in Sydney.
I've been a few times and it never disappoints. A lot of it is free to view but some stuff you have to pay for. A great experience if you're ever in Australia at that time. The view from the ferry along the harbour is EPIC 🎉
It’s definitely worth making sure you’re in Sydney when vivid is on! Those were highlights, but there is stuff everywhere! So much to see. It is in the middle of winter and at night-so coldest ever Sydney weather but totally worth it. But probably more like spring in Indiana 😜
I’ve been going every year for the last 10 years. Most of the light displays are free, but there are also some paid displays, including underground in tunnels. In addition to the lights there are also other events.
Usually in June each year there is a huge chorus made up of people from all over the world. There is no audition. You sign up and learn the music at home and then on this one weekend everyone goes to Sydney and there are rehearsals for two days. Then on the final night they sing in a concert in the Sydney Opera House. So, that's something else you could try doing if you want to time your holiday to see vivid and sing in the opera house. It is Chorus Oz.
It’s put on by the government Ry, it’s art, tourist attraction, it’s just fun. Many cities do it, the displays are scattered throughout the city, Sydney does it best, so far
Ryan, please don't feel bad that Australia does these things. Back in 1982, while living in Atlanta, we took our children to Stone Mountain and saw a brilliant laser light show set to music. The Confederate men on horses carved into the mountain were outlined by laser light beams, and then to our amazement, the lasers depicted them riding off into the night sky. It was brilliant. We also took our kids to the Epcot Centre around this time and saw the most incredible futuristic exhibits known at that time, including instant live projection via fibre optics, lights that you could interupt that played musical tones, vegetables growing in the air with no soil, and many more things. That was over forty years ago. I can't even begin to imagine what they have now. America has and does lead the world in fantastic creations, which for us Kiwis were and are mind-blowing. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards from Rae in New Zealand 🇳🇿 ❤
Haven't seen the drone show yet, might have to go back for that. I'd seen photos of the Opera House, it didn't seem possible that the colours could be so vibrant. Then I went to see it, and it really is like that... well, vivid.
That was definitely last year's. 😁 It's free, but you need to organise food and breaks because you'll go into the wee hours trekking through to see it all. It's also very crowded. So buy those glowing balloons so you can stand out and not lose your mates.
@@Bellas1717 Now in my late 70's, and with many years of Bridge crossing in my life, I've almost never heard it called the Coathanger (let alone all in capitals). Mostly on shows such as this.
@@doubledee9675 I believe the capitals are just put in by the OP for emphasis, no one would actually write it like that. As with so many aspects of life, our experience very much depends on the circle in which we move. In my experience, it’s more likely to come from people from older people from outside Sydney than from homegrowns.
YES! Come on down, Ry. I won’t see you, unless you make lots of reaction vids on the ground, I’m in Qld country. But do come, it’s worth a week in Sydney during Vivid, then a tour around as much as you can see.
If you live in another county you might have to pay for a plane and a hotel but if you are just floating around the area at the time then it its free - unless you want to eat, drink or buy souvenirs then you will pay. It can be cold at least to our standards, it is the entry point to winter at this end of the globe - I've even heard Canadian's complain about the cold in our winter and it doesn't even snow well not directly in Sydney but you can get some good skiing with a couple of hours drive (I was actually in snow falling from the sky in Yellowstone in shorts and T-Shirt - no where near as cold as I've been in Sydney in winter - though most of the time that "cold" winter is about 2 or 3 weeks at the back end of June and early July).
I agree sometimes Sydney Harbour can be very cold, I think it’s the wind factor as the Harbour is wide and can be exposed to strong winds coming in through the Heads in winter. 🥶 Having said that last years Vivid had great weather, I had to take off my jacket as it was too warm walking around the sheltered areas .
It's on right now started last Friday, it's goes on every night through out the city for 3weeks, something you pay for but majority are free it's winter it's freezing.i loved last year more than previous years I think .
Hi Ryan , this is stunning , beyond belief . Similar Aussie computer nerds , like the Aussie police ones that suckered all the drug dealers, put their minds to this, coupled with massive , special projectors , then there are the drones , also mapped for precision and you can see the outcome . NO other city does it better .
Ryan, you haven't mentioned how well our Aussies are doing in the Olympic Games. Proves for our population, yes we love our sport and our wonderful sport stars who represent our wonderful country 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Vivid is free (and amazing). Thst cost is probably flights and accommodation (I'm confident accommodation is far more expensive during vivid than non eventful times of the year)
I was working at a bar on the harbour for vivid last year,, vivid is cool but the month straight of crowds of thousands coming through our venue was rough lmao,, I remember my feet bleeding one night after work because of how much running I’d done That does mean though that being there late at night we got to see the practice runs of the drone shows at 2am, free stroopwaffel from a van outside, and got to see the projection mapping before they did it on the opera house
Ryan Sydney is a beautiful city. Vivid Sydney gets extremely crowded. There are a few exhibitions you pay to see but other than that it is all free and yes very very spectacular. Some laser shows are just jaw dropping. There are lots of harbor cruises running all the time if you don't feel like walking around. We have done both and personally I enjoyed walking around the most but you do have to fight the crowds.
It's a festival of light innnovative and free on every day and night, They now use drones & utilise the old underground tunnels, it keeps the economy moving and encourages people out of their warm homes :D
It'd be a good date night. Imagine having dinner with your partner in some outdoor dining area and watching the drone show while you eat. That'd be real nice.
I went there one year as I was in Sydney, I was underwhelmed, but later I found I was basically just around the corner from the main lights like at the opera house. Like I was somewhere along the water and all I had to do was walk a few minutes further to see it. Like where I was I think there was some lights but nothing that would be considered vivid I didn’t really know what it was, just that there were lights in the city.
My favourite part was Paramount+ promo drone show that had a full scale USS Enterprise flying across Sydney Harbour. Jaw dropping stuff. BTW it's all FREE!
Im pretty sure every states does this they do it here in Adelaide sa as well Sydney probably the biggest due to the world land marks but equally as good in my state as well Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

Pretty sure it's "Tourism NSW" (the state Sydney's in) that put it on, done as a way of bringing in tourists in the cooler weather, attracting tourists from overseas but also interstate & from the country to come to the city as well. Various councils also fund displays though, not sure who else funds it & businesses in the areas around it say it's like NYE in terms of buisness it brings in, except for 21 nights, instead of NYE's 1. It's timed to be outside the main tourist season, but also to be before it really gets into the winter cold & most importantly, when the nights are long, so it gets dark early, so as to let kids, the elderly etc really enjoy it. Lots of people, but it's not so crowded that you can't move, still easy to see everything, even for little kids who are shorter than adults & it's got easy pram access everywhere too, to make it easier for families to enjoy & to then catch trains home with their kids sleeping in their prams on the way. If it ever gets too crowded to be enjoyable, presumably they will just extend the festival length, so as to bring the crowds back to good levels. They constantly expand areas included in the festival too, which spreads people out, or allows people to attend multiple nights & see different things & yes it's free, that trip with payment is for you Ryan, you're supposed to enter & potentially win the travel costs to attend the festival :)

Early winter is the best time for tourists in australia. You can go to Sydney and Melbourne in cooler weather and go up to Brissy and Cairns for beaches . Darwin is awesome from may til august.
The light shows are free to watch of course, but there are also 'Vivid talks' that cost like 30 bucks, for example Jenji Kohan was at Town Hall, during the peak of her show Orange Is The New Black (she also created the show Weeds that I was also a fan of) and other writers/artists have events linked to the VIVID festival.
Ive travelled the world in the Navy for the past 36 years, sailed into hundreds of ports.....nothing is as stunning as Sydney, period.

There are usually good deals on Groupon for the cruises. I have been on two, both were $39 per person which included dinner and drinks.
Wow! Thx for your service of sharing this. Never heard of "VIVID". Def. a must-see, if one happens to be there. 🤣
One of the many free events in Sydney! People think Sydney is very expensive, and definitely accommodation can be, but there are many of free things in Sydney.
It’s not expensive for USA/European/UK tourists given the exchange rate is so dramatically in their favour.
We are bloody amazing. 🤗🇦🇺
Really hope you get to come over and experience Sydney during Vivid.
It reallly is a wonderful sight.
Its lovely to take a harbour cruise with 360 views
My wife did the traffic / pedestrian control for a lot of that walk around video ENJOY ❤❤❤❤❤
I love the lights. Go out for dinner while watching the lights is amazing.
I think my favourite was when it was simply lit up in pure pink after we lost Olivia
Starts in May just before winter can see it up on the hill 20 miles away
Haven't seen the drone show yet, might have to go back for that. I'd seen photos of the Opera House, it didn't seem possible that the colours could be so vibrant. Then I went to see it, and it really is like that... well, vivid.
That was definitely last year's. 😁 It's free, but you need to organise food and breaks because you'll go into the wee hours trekking through to see it all. It's also very crowded. So buy those glowing balloons so you can stand out and not lose your mates.
Impressive show. I had some great times on the harbour sailing back when I lived there.
The Light Shows in Sydney are Spectacular much to see and do⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏🙏
Canberra does one of these, called Enlighten. The projections use all the large buildings, galleries, high courts etc around the central lake.
My friends from Melbourne comes to visit most years to see vivid sydney .. we go for a wonder and take photos !!
Vivid was started to get people to come to the city in Winter...
The Bridge is usually referred to as the COATHANGER
Not a lot of younger generations recognise the nickname, as per comments on other videos, so it’s good that you mention it for them.
@@Bellas1717 Perhaps
@@Bellas1717 You could be right about that. The OPer's comment is way off beam
No video can really capture this event. I have been three times and will see it again this year.
Those holograms on the water are possible because a fine mist of water is sprayed, and the light reflects off that. Very clever!
I think most cities in Australia have a light show now. Perth's is called Lightscape, it's held in beautiful Kings Park in the CBD. It's amazing. ☮️
Ooh I've just moved to Perth, I'll have to check this out!
White Night in Melbourne! ❤
I can confirm this. Last year it went all the way around the park and they even put the lights in the ponds :)
I haven't been yet but it wouldn't be on the same scale as Sydney's. I saw one in Adelaide a few years ago which blew me away. 😊
Enlighten in Canberra
He really, really likes it.
Hi Ryan , this is stunning , beyond belief . Similar Aussie computer nerds , like the Aussie police ones that suckered all the drug dealers, put their minds to this, coupled with massive , special projectors , then there are the drones , also mapped for precision and you can see the outcome .
NO other city does it better .
... LJ hooker, you're the beesssttt 🎶🎶
... I'll show myself out 🐻
Projectors are anchored to the ground to project patterns and architecture , plants for a set time. Iconic photo ops.
Ryan, you haven't mentioned how well our Aussies are doing in the Olympic Games.
Proves for our population, yes we love our sport and our wonderful sport stars who represent our wonderful country 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Vivid IS fabulous! Every year 🎉
My daughter and I went last year on a cruise on Sydney harbour to watch the vivid lights. It was AMAZING.
Vivid is free (and amazing). Thst cost is probably flights and accommodation (I'm confident accommodation is far more expensive during vivid than non eventful times of the year)
So glad you got to see this, it is very amazing and gets better every year. I hope you get to experience it in person one day.😁😁😁
I was working at a bar on the harbour for vivid last year,, vivid is cool but the month straight of crowds of thousands coming through our venue was rough lmao,, I remember my feet bleeding one night after work because of how much running I’d done
That does mean though that being there late at night we got to see the practice runs of the drone shows at 2am, free stroopwaffel from a van outside, and got to see the projection mapping before they did it on the opera house
Thanks for showing Aussies what some never see!🇦🇺
Ryan Sydney is a beautiful city.
That was totally amazing.
It's a festival of light innnovative and free on every day and night, They now use drones & utilise the old underground tunnels, it keeps the economy moving and encourages people out of their warm homes :D
I try to get up to Sydney every year for Vivid. Well worth a visit and you can't help but get your steps in!
It's always great Ryan, best place on earth.
Vivid is simply stunning! It's amazing. I'm hoping to get to it this year. I've not seen if for a couple of years.
Goosebumps!!😮
It'd be a good date night. Imagine having dinner with your partner in some outdoor dining area and watching the drone show while you eat. That'd be real nice.
They also have a light show in Melbourne and various regional/country towns
I went there one year as I was in Sydney, I was underwhelmed, but later I found I was basically just around the corner from the main lights like at the opera house.
Like I was somewhere along the water and all I had to do was walk a few minutes further to see it.
Like where I was I think there was some lights but nothing that would be considered vivid
I didn’t really know what it was, just that there were lights in the city.
My favourite part was Paramount+ promo drone show that had a full scale USS Enterprise flying across Sydney Harbour. Jaw dropping stuff. BTW it's all FREE!
Im pretty sure every states does this they do it here in Adelaide sa as well
Sydney probably the biggest due to the world land marks but equally as good in my state as well
Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
Vivid began as a concept smart light festival in 2009 for energy efficiency championed by lighting designer Mary-Anne Kyriakou. Carolyn Grant brought the idea of a smart light project to then Manager of Cultural events at Events NSW. While the project had merit it needed to be broader and the then project team of Smart light led by Mary Ann developed the concept further. It evolved into a broader festival and Vivid was born, headlined by Brian Eno. Eno, in collaboration with lighting designer Bruce Ramus, projected 'light painting' onto both sides of the Opera House. It is nothing like the pissy stuff done in Melbourne and Adelaide
They constantly expand areas included in the festival too, which spreads people out, or allows people to attend multiple nights & see different things
& yes it's free, that trip with payment is for you Ryan, you're supposed to enter & potentially win the travel costs to attend the festival :)

I love Vivid. I went a few years ago. If you like drones and light shows, you should check out the UK London new years fireworks. The last few years they have utilised drones and fireworks.
"YOU GOT THE FISH IN ON IT TOO??" 😂😂 It's different each year and about as cold as Sydney gets. 🥶🥶🥶
I was out on the water for new year and the fireworks were amazing.
